Eurovision 2024: #24
24. DENMARK Saba - "Sand" 30th place
youtube
Decade Ranking: 87/153 [Above Fyr og Flamme, below Luke Black]
SAND! SAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!
Tumblr media
You know the drill. We've arrived at the stage of "mostly enjoyable", and there's no better opener to that than "Sand". It's so delightfully average. Nothing but the recognisable sound of a "Scandinavian Eurovision song", something we all know and like to hear.
And its comes with a multipurpose hook too. Allow me to demonstrate:
FRANCE!!! FRAAAAAAAAAANCE!!!!
Tumblr media
SCREAMING AT A MICROPHONE STAAAAAND
FRANCE!!! FRAAAAAAAAANCE!!!
Tumblr media
I GUESS THAT ALL THE JURIES VOTE FOR FRANCE 😶
Of course "Sand" sounds like it comes out of a can (SPAM!!! SPAAAM!! BARELY MEAT THAT COMES OUT OF A CAN!), because it was one of those scandiblandi pop nothings that were bounced around internal selections for several years. (I hope you like those because I'm expecting 2025 to be infested with them) Remember how "Colours" was peddled first to Michela and then to Destiny to no avail, so that frumpy bat Bernarda was forced to sing it herself in the following Dora? ("NOW ALL I SEE IS COLOURS, YOU TOOK ME FROM BLACK AND WHITE" :is blind: ).
Likewise, the songwriters of "Sand" first tried to sell it to Emma Muscat when she tried to pivot away from "Out of Sight" before she chose "I am what I am" (MAN!!! MAAAAAN!!! I WILL TAKE ONE CUZ THAT'S HOW I AM!). Yep, an Emma Muscat hand-me-down, that's the level of Denmark at Eurovision right now. HOORAY for everyone who is not a Dane!!
So in that sense, it was the perfect match for DMGP, which was the usual depressing affair. So bad people were gravitating towards Basim cheerfully singing about a man dying from cirrhosis, an entry that demonstrated a near Israeli level of unselfawareness and moral corruption. But he lost (ANTS!!! AAAAAANTS! HIS HOPE HAS BEEN CRUSHED LIKE SOME ANTS! :victory dance: ) to Saba, and all was perfectly average in the world.
At Eurovision, I always assumed Saba would be in contention for a spot in the finale simply because of how catchy the hook and melody were. Unfortunately, Servephobia is a Scandinavian illness and both Melanie Webhe and Saba are patients.
Not that Saba didn't attempt to serve.... but um... judge for yourself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
work those armpit fetishists, girl! IMBUE them with the power of irate sexfaces! Like idk, it's "serving" in the same sense of "the headcanon slaying" you and I would do in our bedroom acting out these songs like the useless homos- Zorra stans that we all are. It looks great in your imagination but in reality, . Kind of how this year's Belgian entrant thought he nailed the performance each time yet never rose above a level of:
Tumblr media
Also the staging, um... Look I know the song is called "Sand" and that she sings it's slipping through her hands, but everyone knows it's a metaphor? "Oh we've broken up? I guess that sucks " Like the zoomer thing where life sucks I guess but it's not a big deal cuz we'll all die (eventually.)
So why make it so... (g)lit(t)eral?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Literally shooting cgi sand from her armpit in the last shot <3 told you this was aimed at fetishits <3 (PITS!!! PIIIITS!!! the hottest gay thing that ain't bara tids!).
What really killed Saba's chances at Eurovision was the staging. Sure the faces and subpar vocals were already... not helping. (they were entertaining me though, I'll give her that). Still. Denmark have proven once again that they have no ability whatsoever to discriminate good ideas from bad ones. They added so much shit to the NF's performance that made it look worse ♥ and fixed NONE of the issues ♥ The song's uptempo, and restricting Saba's movement to a space smaller than most countries' postal stamps may not have been the most prudent choice here (maybe i should add small platforms to the list of Massive Staging Faux Pas alongside sunglasses, unnecessary headset mics, selfie backdrops and turntables?)
Oh and one of those faux pas was ofc also present like why is this a shot?
Tumblr media
YOU CAN SO CLEARLY SEE it isn't her. 😂 😍
Before rehearsals I was on the fence whether Denmark could qualify or not but as soon as I saw the tiktok that showed the backdrop clone and the effects I knew she was gonna be out. Oh well. Time to hop on the MALTA QUALIFIES train I gues.
All in all, "Sand" pretty much what you would expect from Denmark. An average, not unpleasant (and memeable) song that was somehow the only acceptable option in an horrible NF. They tried VERY hard to elevate into goodness, and completely failed. ♥ I love "Sand"'s journey ironically and kind unironically enjoy it for its incompetence, which makes it a good opener for this year's Green tier.
Btw: with Georgia, ☘Ireland☘ and ❤Latvia❤ all reaching the finals this year (EGGS! EEEEEEEGGS!!! DONS'S CLUTCH QUAL IS BETTER THAAAAN SEX!), Denmark now have the longest NQ streak out of all the active ESC countries. Cannae wait to see what creative new way they'll figure out to accedentally get level with Montenegro's as well. ♥

I realised today what a big role the movie “Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge” played in my life however cringe it might be.
It dictated how I wanted to have friends, my taste in guys, what my college life should look like, what type of girl I wanted to become, my love for symmetry, etc etc
This film played a pivotal role in my life no kidding. I am proud to say I knew Saba before the Hrithik situation and I loved her before Hrithik loved her.

A few weeks ago Saba and No ID released a new song called "How to Impress God", and it's presumably another taste of the pair's upcoming collaborative LP. On "How to Impress God", Saba depicts a scenario where he encounters God, who remains thoroughly unimpressed by a list of his accomplishments over a mellow, kick drum heavy instrumental courtesy of No ID. Like Saba's strongest work, "How to Impress God" has a solid, if slightly corny conceit, a great beat, rapping that's extremely tight and fluid, and an execution far stronger than the sum of its parts.
No ID continues to rise to the occasion here as the platonic ideal of a beat maker with a beat that's melodic and propulsive but leaves plenty of space for Saba's bars while still sounding superbly textured. Each artist compliments one other's styles extremely well without overshadowing the other person. There's no word on any concrete details regarding this upcoming collaborative Saba x No ID LP, nor any regarding the upcoming Pivot Gang LP, but all the songs that Saba's shared from each so far find him in top form, and firing on all cylinders with remarkable precision.

The Significance of Kwanzaa: Understanding Its Roots and Relevance
As the festive season approaches, it’s important to acknowledge and respect the diverse celebrations that bring joy and meaning to various communities. One such celebration is Kwanzaa, a week-long festival that holds deep cultural significance. In this blog post, we’ll explore the origins, principles, and importance of Kwanzaa, providing insights into why it's a pivotal part of the year for many.
What is Kwanzaa? Kwanzaa, celebrated from December 26th to January 1st, is a cultural festival that honors African heritage in African-American culture. Unlike religious holidays, Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration, embracing the rich traditions and values of African communities. The Origins of Kwanzaa Kwanzaa was established in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana Studies. In the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Karenga sought to create a unique African American celebration, one that would provide a sense of unity and connection to African heritage. The name 'Kwanzaa' derives from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning “first fruits,” reflecting its roots in ancient African first-fruits celebrations. The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa At the heart of Kwanzaa are the Nguzo Saba, or the seven principles. Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of these principles: 1. Umoja (Unity): Striving for unity in family, community, nation, and race. 2. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Defining ourselves, naming ourselves, and speaking for ourselves. 3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): Building and maintaining our community together and solving our problems collectively. 4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): Building and maintaining our own stores, shops, and businesses. 5. Nia (Purpose): Making our collective vocation the building and developing of our community. 6. Kuumba (Creativity): Using creativity and imagination to make our communities more beautiful and beneficial. 7. Imani (Faith): Believing in our people, our leaders, our teachers, and the righteousness of our struggle. Celebrating Kwanzaa Kwanzaa celebrations often include singing, drumming, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large traditional meal. On the last day, gifts are exchanged, and the values of Nguzo Saba are reaffirmed. Why Kwanzaa Matters Kwanzaa is more than just a celebration; it’s a reflection of a struggle and a testament to resilience. It provides an opportunity for African Americans to connect with their African roots and celebrate their heritage. In a broader sense, Kwanzaa reinforces the importance of cultural diversity, reminding us all to acknowledge and respect the richness of various cultural traditions. Conclusion As we embrace the spirit of the holiday season, understanding and respecting celebrations like Kwanzaa is crucial in fostering a world of inclusivity and cultural appreciation. Whether you celebrate Kwanzaa or are learning about it for the first time, let’s take this opportunity to honor the diversity that strengthens and enriches our communities.

There's always a hot debate about the old heads who can't stand the younger generation's music. Namely, older people always claim there's a lack of talent and skill in the young music.
I was young once, so I understand there were some rather juvenile trends in music (Soulja Boy/snap music was probably the most egregious example, but can I interest you in some 3Oh!3?)
So in some ways, this is just cyclical right? The young generation will eventually grow up and hate whatever music comes after.
However, we are at a pivotal moment here. People are actually claiming legitimacy when they talk about Yeat, Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi, Ken Carson etc. being the best rappers in our current generation. Carti has a song called "Jumpoutthehouse" where he repeats "Jump out the house!" for over a minute straight. At some point we need to be ready for a conversation.
And the conversation is this: It's okay to trash the younger generation's music if it's actually trash. People need to have a little adversity to contextualize what they're listening to. Like, The Beatles can't be on the same level as a band who sang Skippity boo-bop. That band needs to be correctly identified as being trash compared to The Beatles.
And no, it's not a simple case of there not being any new good music. JID, Saba, Earl, Joey and Cordae are prime example of rappers in the "new school" that aren't chasing bullshit mumble trap trends.
The thing that we have to keep in mind is that people are going to always get defensive. "You're a hater" "you're just an old head" Yeah and you're claiming Whole Lotta Red, an album that has very little redeeming qualities and does nothing to push hip-hop forward is some sort of genre defining (and defying) classic. Like, excuse me, but there will be some much needed gatekeeping here, thank you very much.
