The other half was having fangasms about a week back, swearing they'd saw a Saab Drakken fly over them, which sounded barking and more likely must have been some sort of modern stealth jet.

By the looks of things though, they were right. There was one pratting around UK skies over the last fortnight right enough.

Saab Drakens are probably the most famous planes you've never heard of, unless you go into those arts and crafts shops with a section for Airfix model kits, where Drakens have been a staple for decades (a popular choice for their very retro shape).

They were the first supersonic planes (accidentally) to go into regular service, terrified the life out of NATO and the Warsaw Pact alike because even long after it was 'obsolete' it could still beat its more modern counterparts in dogfights due to its weird 'pary' or 'cobra' manouevre, which was like a half pancake flip and jump in mid air, meaning any pursuing jet or projectile would zoom harmlessly under them with no way for them to change their course in time, before dropping down exactly back at the point it had began to hit - almost like something from an old cartoon. It was dirt cheap to maintain and easier to repair than most World War 2 aircraft had been. Little wonder it only ceased being used by the Swedes in 1999 and only finally bowed out of military use altogether when the Austrians sold theirs off to museums in 2005.
