Fix It Wednesday - Caryl Fanfiction Rec

Dear fellow caryler, I'm over the moon to have Melissa and Carol back! I can't even describe how much I missed them both. My hope for caryl canon is reborn! But..can you imagine if we didn't have to go through any of this? No S11 finale with Daryl leaving, no France, no shipbaiting with French nuns? What if S11A had happened according to the plans outlined in s9 and s10 with caryl getting together by the end of the Reapers/Leah arc? Hum..what if?

I'm talking about Off The Map, written by our dear @my-mt-heart, who decided to reimagine and fix the most polemic caryl story line ever to this date nervous laugh, while 1) giving Carol her deserved spotlight as a main character and 2) juggling all the others story lines we were given by TPTB on those 8 episodes. It's an ambitious story posted on 9Lives, and deserves every little bit of your love.

Summary: Imagine Maggie has no history with the Reapers at all, and it’s actually Carol’s idea to venture out into the D.C. area while Alexandria faces possible extinction. With tensions still running high between her and Daryl, they do their best to lead the mission together, but their search for more food quickly turns into the fight of their lives after a chance encounter on the road forcibly separates them. Now that Carol has a target on her back and Daryl is trapped in a dark past, what lengths will they go to in order to keep each other safe? I’m currently watching Doctor Who (2005) for the first time. Just finished season 4.

And I just read your post from last October (?), where you state that you dislike the character River Song. And even though this might sound a bit mean, I was so happy to read that I’m not alone in my strange aversion against this character from the very moment she appeared in the Library episode. Similar to you I just don’t like the fact, that one of the companions is getting this kind of super special treatment, especially when it is interwoven with a romance and even marriage.

Now I’m a bit apprehensive to start with season 5, because I know River Song will be a huge part of the plot... Is it possible to skip her episodes or would I get problems to follow the overarching story line, when doing so?

Something else I noticed and wanted to ask about is the fact that River Song only appeared in the TV series up to and including season 9 (according to the tardis wiki). I know there are many other kinds of media she appears in after 2015. But I’m curious if they indeed dropped the character in the TV show in some way after a couple of seasons?

So far I enjoyed Doctor Who immensely. It is a fun watch, a great opportunity to get lost in strange worlds and, on a more personal level, a nice way to relax after a busy workday. So I just don’t want to ruin this experience for myself, because I have to follow a character/ or a character construct I really don’t like.

And please don’t worry about giving away future plot points. At this point it is better for my enjoyment of the story to know what will happen, at least in regards to River Song.

SoooOOOoooooeeew hello first of all hello hi! welcome to Doctor Who! (I say, if you've seen s1-4/specials you're firmly In It!)

I want to disclaim to begin with, I know a lot of people do like River Song, and would rec seeing her narrative to understand her whole... Deal. I'm personally not a fan of that narrative, but I'll give you a rundown of it below and if you decide you wanna give it a looksee, or a partial watch, there are suggestions for some episodes including her below as well

to allay your fears that she's overpowering/unavoidable, she's kind of shockingly not, considering what M*ffat seemed to want from her. you can pretty much excise her episodes from the plot and miss almost nothing (and I let you know what you do miss below)

the seasons she's in the most are s5+6. she's only in two episodes in s7 and one more in s9 (with none in s8), which ironically does make it feel even odder to me that she's presented the way she is in s4. I know in the audio dramas she does meet other Doctors but in main canon on the show she meets 10 once, 11 a few times, and 12 once. compared to characters like the Master, Jack, even Rose and Clara according to M*ffat's own canon (these are episodes you will see, so you'll know what I mean at that point) she just doesn't compute for me as this "Most Important" thing that M*ffat tries to pull, in which her "specialness" feels incredibly linked to amatornormative monogamy (and generally M*ffat's penchant for introducing women as mysteries first, and characters second). Also in s5+6 especially she's presented as this uncomfortably "femme fatale" type character with dialogue that makes me want to claw my face off

I do have a watchlist that's for when I next go into this era that does skip the River Song episodes (that being said, I actually quite like her last episode. I have a theory that Peter Capaldi is such a grounding presence that over-the-top narrative and terrible dialogue is made emotionally resonant to me)

SO, first things first, I'll give you a rundown of her arc, and then a watchlist of how I intend to enjoy s5-7 moving forwards that you can totally follow

River Song canon (in brief): River Song is the child of Amy Pond (fifth/sixth season companion) and her husband Rory (also companion in those two seasons). Because she is conceived in the Tardis, she has some regeneration energy innate to her (I wasn't a fan of that personally). Before she is born a space cult that's obsessed with the Doctor for truly overblown reasons that are never fully delved into, but can be summed up as "Gallifrey is un-destroyed and the Doctor has the ability to bring it back into the Universe by using a passcode that's his name, and so this cult has formed in order to stop the Doctor discovering this fact and uttering his name," kidnaps Amy, replaces her with a flesh double who has Amy's memories, erases her knowing she's pregnant and then have her wake up in her real body at the moment of giving birth (if this all feels violating af, yes it is and it's never addressed)

then the Doctor and Rory go to rescue her, but in the moment they succeed, they discover that the baby Amy is holding is also a flesh double and the evil cult took her daughter/River from her and... *sigh please know I am only saying this because it's how they describe it on the show* "raise her to be the perfect psychopath" whose only wish is to kill the Doctor (all this training or whatever happens offscreen), but then the Doctor almost dies while saving her life and she gives up her regenerations to save him and the obsession turns into love, and so in summary her following the Doctor around is still centred around being groomed to be obsessed with the ground the Doctor walks on (okay can you tell I really really don't like this)

there is no examination of River's trauma in all of this, and only one moment related to Amy being angry she couldn't raise her child. There's also this creepy overtone of "The Doctor can't see you ageing because then he'll get bored of you" considering she was raised to have her whole selfhood revolve around him throughout her entire childhood

the final thing about River Song is that she was held in a top-security prison for awhile because she did end up killing the Doctor due to being "programmed" to, but the Doctor knows ahead of time that this will happen and so manages to change things so he doesn't die

SO that is River Song's arc in s5+6. now let's completely avoid it -- it's surprisingly easy:

ep 1. The Eleventh Hour (introduction episode)

ep 2. The Beast Below

[then come episodes Time Of Angels + Flesh & Stone. a double episode in which Amy meets the Angels and also River Song. the important thing here is that the main "mystery" are cracks in space and time that erase you from having ever existed. the other important thing here is that at the end of the episode Amy is about to get married and kisses the Doctor/tries to sleep with him the night before her wedding, and the Doctor Very Much Does Not Want This, which leads into the next story-]

ep 5. The Vampires Of Venice

ep 6. Amy's Choice

[NOW WE ARRIVE AT THE FIRST SNAG -- if you want the rest of this season's mystery, you should simply watch the rest of the season. This will include River Song in the final two episodes being involved in that mystery, but if you'd rather jump to where I personally think things get interesting again, or gauge if you're up for it, here's the short rundown of salient points:

Rory is swallowed by the cracks in time and Amy forgets his existence (but the Doctor doesn't)

Rory is brought back as an auton/living plastic out of Amy's subconscious memory of him and accidentally shoots Amy due to programming while they're in Roman-era Britain

Amy is then put into a stasis chamber for 2000 years until she can be brought back out and revived using modern technology, and auton-Rory guards that stasis chamber for 2000 years

the cracks in time came from the Tardis exploding, which is making the universe implode, but they fix that

the Doctor closes the cracks in space/time and everything is reset, including Amy's parents returning from non-existence, and Amy and Rory get married -- to be clear, we never see Amy's parents again, nor are they mentioned in the future, so this catharsis is kind of irrelevant

There is a very famous episode in this called "Vincent and the Doctor." it's about Vincent van Gogh. the only thing you need to know going in is that during this point in the timeline Amy doesn't know that Rory used to exist, otherwise it's a solid standalone episode]

S6

ep 3. The Curse Of The Black Spot (to note, I always think this episode makes more sense directly after Amy's Choice as a "they're not married yet, but they're solving their relationship issues now," because s5 never has them adequately deal with their relationship issues, but s6 is solid on that front, but that's just me)

ep 4. The Doctor's Wife

ep 9. Night Terrors (to note, this episode takes place right after they discover that River is their daughter who was stolen from them. notice how this just... never comes up)

ep 10. The Girl Who Waited

ep 11. The God Complex (to note, this is the perfect final episode for the Ponds, but I will rec two more that come next season)

Season six can genuinely just be watched as these five episodes and it's quite an enjoyable season. The only thing that hints properly at a connective tissue related to River Song is that Amy in the first two both is-and-isn't-pregnant (because Amy is a flesh-double in the first two episodes) according to the Tardis scanner, and she sometimes sees a mysterious woman with an eye-patch. this is her briefly slightly waking up while captured

neither of these are relevant to the episodes they appear in

QUICK NOTE: in the first episode of this season the Doctor discovers a strange woman who has been turned into a Dalek, called Oswin. He never sees the face of this woman, but we do, and it's someone who returns again in another lifetime, under the name of "Clara Oswald" -- I do not recommend this first episode, it is Very Very bad)

4. The Power Of Three (to note, this could form a good coda for the Pond narrative and it's a fun episode, but it's not necessary to end their story if you're happy with The God Complex finishing things)

[you can watch episode 5 "The Angels Take Manhatten" if you want (I mean, you can watch anything you want). it's the official canon departure of the Ponds. it's not great, but it's not the worst episode. River Song is there, but it's not so egregious in terms of writing. if you don't want to watch it: they go back in time, there are angels, they send Rory and Amy back in time and the Doctor can't follow them there because of squiggly wuiggly logic, and so they are left to "live to death" -- Amy writes the Doctor a goodbye note in which she says she and Rory have had a very happy life together]

we have now gone past the River Song narrative for the most part, although she turns up in a genuinely not bad cameo in the s7 finale that interacts a little bit with the library episode -- do note that at this point she and the Doctor are *sigh* married I guess. I have mixed feelings about the s7 finale episodes, but it's not because of her character, and I think the latter half of s7 is worth watching for you to form your own opinion of all of it

She appears again in the Christmas special of s9, which I quite enjoyed. I think also Alex Kingston has way better chemistry with Capaldi, and I sometimes think the show knew this too, because they literally at one point had her describing Eleven/Matt Smith as looking like a 14 yr old, which is... such an odd way to describe the seeming "love of your life" or whatever

so that's it for River Song. Hope this all made sense, let me know if you have any other questions

Is it just me, or is there something kinda off about s9? There have been some really great episodes (ep1, ep3, ep5), but I get the feeling there's been some behind-the-scenes drama that’s caused everything to feel way more haphazard. Like, why has the cast been changing so much between episodes? Even Mrs McCarthy has been absent. Is it a Covid issue? Scheduling problems? It's as though everything (editing, cinematography, casting, even the writing on some episodes) has been done in a hurry.

This is an interesting comment because I see where you coming from and I *kind* of agree a little but at the same time I don't.

There've been a few episodes that I haven't been crazy about, but I'm actually for the most part preferring S9 to S8 (and to a S4 and S6 which are the 2 weakest imo).

(Specifically I feel like the jury's still out for me on 9x05, since there were things I adored, things that were meh, and a few things that I'm going to have to wait until 9x10 to decide about. )

As to why things seem different and/or why so much of the cast seems to change around there a couple different issues/explanations as to why things are a little odd this time around.

Series 9 was supposed to film in 2020 but then COVID happened. And notably lockdown was at its peak right around the time, they were probably going to start pre-production (casting, approving script drafts, coordinating people's schedules and filming locations). It's very likely that at least a few planned episodes were scrapped and/or significantly rewritten for any number of reasons connected to COVID, including but not limited to 1) not being able to film in certain locations at certain times due to COVID and/or other restrictions. 2) having to significantly rework planned material to better comply with safety guidelines (ex: smaller casts, fewer extras, smaller crew, maintaining physical distancing when possible).

The cast has always been very talented and very popular, so it's unsurprising that scheduling them has been difficult. John Light and Nancy in particular do a LOT of live theatre, which is always especially tricky to schedule around. Additionally, a bunch of the cast signed on to some unexpected new projects during the 2020 hiatus. I know Emer did a lot of writing and has 2 other shows that she's working on--one of which she helped create and has a good chunk of creative control with. I believe Nancy Carroll also filmed a new show as well and so that's another challenge in her schedule.

As to why this series has had less Mrs. M in particular, Sorcha Cusack is in her seventies. Like, She's amazing and an international treasure but like...she is getting up there. I've always gotten the impression that the cast and crew who make Fr. Brown genuinely care about each other, and so I can see them reducing Mrs. M's role this season (maybe at her request so she can take a well deserved break or if COVID cases are spiking and they want to keep her safe since she is more vulnerable than the others.

Nine seasons is a reasonably long run by any standards--and even more so for a UK show. (According to the wiki, it's the 2nd longest daytime show not counting soap operas...which is crazy to think about). I would not be surprised if Series 10 (assuming we get it) is the last as I am sure that Mark Williams (and to a lesser extent Sorcha Cusack) will eventually want to be able to work on other projects...and well, you can't have Fr. Brown without Father Brown.

I feel like this season in particular is kind of laying the groundwork for the end (which is sad ofc but in a tender bittersweet way) and so it makes more sense for them to try to revisit as many characters and stories as possible (Kalon callback of all things?) and plant seeds for future journeys for certain characters (Felicia/Flambeau and/or Flamdemption; more characterization/hints of promotion for Goodfellow... which is overdue imo) and well... just a general sense of life moving on in general (like we are *finally* going to see 1954 apparently...things are changing) and unfortunately, that can also mean characters moving on and being less present.

And ironically, that's kind of what I've really loved about S9. I mean in a perfect world, every episode would have Fr. B, Mrs. M, Lady F, Sid, Bunty, Mallory, Valentine, Sullivan, Goodfellow, and Flambeau--and all of them would have a ton of really great lines and moments...but that's unfortunately just not the realistic.

So the best compromise imo is to try and split them up and make the most of the characters who are in each given episode. I feel like Mrs. M had a really good showcase this year in 9x02, Sid's writing has been great for the episodes that he appears in, Mallory and Goodfellow have much more to *do* besides just try (and fail) to solve the case.

Honestly, I'd rather have the characters we have be used really effectively when they are used...than just have them be there and not do much. And for the most part, I think that they have, and if S10 (or even S9) does end up being the last season, I think we're still ending in a pretty good place. Others can and have done much worse with their final seasons.

immortal s9´s story

We actually have a great arc in series 9 (and 10 in the end), and I personally think it´s one of the best arcs in New Who, simple, important and human like the first Classic Who lines. It´s an old tremendously beautiful fairy tale about immortality.

In "Last Christmas" we got not just an implicit marriage proposal scene and Jenna Coleman who (God save the Queen) had decided to stay but also two very significant lines. 

This "I´m dying too" thing becomes a reckless manifesto for the Doctor and Clara for the next season. However, the Doctor doesn´t do dying, he has to live: because he is a Doctor and this is a show. But what about Clara's place in such kind of life? 

Almost every story in series 9 right up to the epic final divides into two episodes (except "Sleep no More" which originally was going to be a two-parter pair too according to Mark Gattis´s interview). Two episodes about death and life, anxiety and insight, desperation and hope, finite and infinite.

"The Magician´s Apprentice" hits us with the Doctor's decision to die for some vague stupid dalek reasons (lets put the Doctor's doubts about his own goodness aside). When Missy tells Clara about it we can see a good example of quite brave behaviour: she doesn't panic, prepares herself to whatever comes next and takes Missy's leadership rushing into the rescue mission. She is in charge while the Doctor seems to be too sad, ashamed, exousted and in a mood to sacriface himself to do something reasonable about this absurd situation.

"The Witch's Familiar" reverses sides. Clara's inside a dalek, she's probably dying or dead already, the Doctor is furious and in charge now. He puts away his own feelings because he has a rescue mission now. Why did it go too far? Why didn't Clara manage to figure out how to open the dalek's shell? It was very simple, she just had to think the word "open", but obviously she was too exausted. So, despite the triumphant "same old same old, the Doctor and Clara Oswald in the TARDIS" both of them have this "my closest person is dying for real" experience now and that's the moment when the dilemma stands.

"Under the Lake" and "Before the Flood" story dedicates to the Doctor's possible death. Now Clara's response is way different: she's freaking out and willing to tell the Doctor everything just to make him come back to her. She can't stand the thought of being without him cause he's essential to her. Jenna's performance is just stunning and heartbreaking: her eyes and face are pure overpowering panic. As we know he comes back ("if you love me in any way" detected) despite his "survivor's guilt". There's also the first dangeorous sign: he changes history to save Clara, her name makes him confront the Fisher king. Nobody wants to admit the others are kind of... a collateral damage for him now? Of course, not. Bad choices, you still have to choose... however, he becomes way serious when it comes closer to Clara's life. Important detail: he was trapped in a pod.

"The Girl who died" and "The Woman who lived" is an experimental story about tidal waves and "what if I accidentaly make one little human immortal". Now we have iconic "I keep thinking what if something happens to you" and " immortality is everybody else dying". Also the Doctor all of a sudden is very provident and gives Ashildr the second immortality charge for whoever she wants. In the second episode Ashildr asks the Doctor very directly: "Why haven't you made Clara immortal?" His answer is "look how you turned out", and we can see that her life now is a battlefield and it's empty. Not to mention she is a tidal wave and nobody knows the consequences of the Doctor's "angry and emotinal" decision until we stand on the last edge of reality. How can the Doctor do this to Clara? Is it selfish? Is it what she wants? Or what he wants? Ashildr daren't give her second charge as well.

"Zygon" episodes are a reflection of the "Lake/Flood" story and dedicate to Clara's possible death while she's trapped in a pod. The Doctor's reaction is way different too now: he's broken and devastated, and then his hope phase goes like hell (don't forget about 127 missed calls in the first place). We have now iconic "the longest month of my life" and "I'll be the judge of time". The final is open and scary, no hugging, no missing you stuff, just awkward silence because they both feel relief and constant agony at the same time. How long do they have?

The Doctor tells Clara he's sick of losing people. Clara tells him to stop brooding, stop asking impossible questions and start winning. He can't safe everybody but it's ok as long as he can save somebody and be kind. 

And here's the problem: Clara's not just people, she's his friend, companion, his impossible girl, exactly what he needs, probably an amazing teacher, his carer, his "o Clara my Clara", his egomaniac needy game-player, his control freak, his accomplice and a salvage of a lifetime. 

And to sort it out they have four more episodes. But it's a story for another day.

Abstract

The complete automation of the garment manufacturing process is still present at certain times due to the nature of textile materials. Textile materials are flat, and this lack of stiffness affects the transfer of textile materials from one workstation to another in automated processes. With regard to the construction and the principle of operation, the grips are limited to certain types of materials and several processes they can perform. In the capture processes, the optimum handle has to be handled with different sizes and shapes of fabric, different properties and with one or more layers of material. Therefore, many researches are focused on designing handlebars for handling textile materials as well as the ability to capture them.

Introduction

Handling of textile materials and work pieces

In textile and clothing manufacturing processes, we encounter problems in transporting materials and/or work pieces, their positioning, folding and stacking one at another. Problems occur due to the characteristic properties of the material. Since the textile material is not a solid material, it changes its shape due to any effect on it, such as when moving from one working place to another. Different transport devices solve material moving on a flat surface. An example are automated machine that moves the work piece directly on a flat surface or automate that guides the movement of the material through the guides.

The current industrial manipulators should be capable of manipulating loose materials. It is known that a small force also affects deformation and handling of textile material. During handling, the textile material can be folded, buckled or wrinkled. In addition, a large variety of fabrics, types, shapes and characteristics increase the severity of introducing flexible automation in the clothing industry [1]. The characteristics and properties of fabrics that have to be considered for successful performance of textile materials handling, and therefore the efficiency of the grippers are: thickness, low rigidity, bandwidth, elasticity, capability of retaining the charge, low mass, adhesion force. The effective gripper should be able to handle different sizes and shapes of fabrics, with varying properties and with one or more layers of fabric. With the ability to handle it, it is also necessary to ensure the safe transport of fabrics from one job to another [2,3]. The analysis of grippers in the textile industry has shown that, according to the principle of capture, they can be divided into five groups: mechanical, pneumatic, adhesion (adhesion), electrostatic and magnetic [4]. Several different principles for capturing and separating the parts can be applied in the same clamps, to increase the reliability of the textile hold. Mechanical grippers are most popular in the textile industry due to their simple construction and reliability [5-7]. Beside mechanical grippers, pneumatic grippers can be used in textile and clothing industry.

Experiment

Fibre manufacturing/preparation

The aim of this paper was to investigate the picking of nonwovens by vacuum grippers at input pressures of 4 to 6bar. For the experiment, we used 10 different samples of nonwoven textile materials cut into dimensions of 10 x 10cm. Before we begin with the experimental part of the capture of the samples, we have to determine some basic characteristics of the nonwovens material that affect the ability to capture such as the thickness and the sample mass (Table 1).

After determining the properties of the material, we started by picking samples using vacuum grippers. The equipment we used for the measurement consists of a digital pressure gauge, air preparation unit, compressor, pressure regulator, pressure sensor, ejector and vacuum gripper (Figure 1a). We used 3 types of vacuum gripper: small circle (G1), large circle (G2) and flat (G3) (Figure 1b) [8].

The sample was placed on a flat surface and a vacuum gripper in the middle of the sample. By using a digital pressure gauge, we changed the inlet pressure entering into the ejector from 4 to 6bar. We observed whether at a given input pressure the sample was raised to a height of 15cm (Figure 2).

Results and Discussion

From Table 1 can be seen that we had a wide range of nonwoven material. The sample thickness is 0.21-4.384mm and the mass of 34.14-331.22g/m2.

Table 2 shows the results of picking nonwovens materials by of 3 tips of vacuum grippers (small circle G1, large circle G2 and flat G3) at pressures of 4 to 6bars. Mark A indicates that sample was not been accepted, label B that sample was accept and held and the mark C that griper was during measurement of the sticks to the surface.

As can be seen from (Table 2), with gripper 1 (H1) could not catch a single sample. At the inlet pressure of5 and 6bar, the S5 and S10 the gripper is sticks to the surface. Both samples have a mass less than 41g/m2 and thickness less than 0.24mm. With gripper 2 (H2) the situation is almost identical. No sample has caught with this gripper The only difference is at sample S10 where the gripper does not stick to the substrate. This can be assign to the larger surface of the rubber part of the gripper. By gripper 3 (H3) we have completely different results. With this gripper, we managed to capture four samples (S5, S8, S9, S10). Samples S5, S9 and S10 were captured with all three inlet pressures, while sample S8 was not caught at a minimum pressure of 4bar. Sample S2 is interesting. It has the highest mass of all tested samples (331.22g/m2) and the largest thickness (4.383mm), but could not be lift with any gripper. This tells us that to determine what characteristics should have nonwovens to catch it with a vacuum gripper, we need to find another characteristic beside mass and thickness.

Conclusion

In textile and clothing manufacturing processes, a great deal of time goes to handling and manipulating materials and work pieces. Problems occur due to the characteristic properties of the material. Therefore, production time is much longer than in other industries where harder materials are used. The simplest way to reduce the making time is the automatic handling of materials applying vacuum gripper. Considering the results of experiments conducted with vacuum grippers, further tests should carried out with including other characteristics of the material.
