PLC (programmable logic controller) is a digital electronic device used in industrial automation. PLC is used in manufacturing control systems where cost of maintaining and developing automation systems is high, assembly lines, safety control and where you require automation in factories. Initially different software with different controllers were used, But nowadays TIA portal totally integrated automation is for the whole package where we can find plc, scada , him, drives. Similar AB plc there are Pico plc - Pico soft, Micro 800 CCW(connected component workbench), Micrologix/ SLC -RSlogic 500, PLC - RSlogic , compact logic/ control logic/ Flex logic - RSlogic 5000 . Another advanced software is Studio 5000. Hardware parts of PLC includes Power supply, Bus system, CPU, Input module , Output module, Rack and Rail, communication port, Display unit. CPU: It is a microcontroller based circuit. It consists of ALU, memory, internal timer and counter , flags, and process image memory. CPU performs the function like scanning, i/o bus traffic control, self diagnostics and communication. The brain of the whole PLC is CPU module .Manufacturers offer different modules of plc as per need of the system. Input module: it acts as a link between input devices and CPU. There is a digital input module and analog input module. Example of input devices:- Relay contact, motor starter contact, thumbwheel switches, Photoelectric sensor. Examples of digital inputs are pushbutton ,limit switches, proximity sensors, selector switches etc. When input condition is true it passes 24 vdc or 230/110v ac supply to the controller and when it is false or off ,it will pass 0 v supply. Analog inputs continuously provide the field condition to the controller for e.g. temp is 37.8 f. Output module: it is the link between output devices and CPU.Input devices connected with plc can be digital as well as analog. Example of output devices :- Alarms, Lights, Horns , Valve, Fans ,Solenoid. Bus system - There is control ,address, data bus system. Address of input file ,output file and other files like timer/counter/control register is given by the address bus system. Data bus system all data to plc modules from different modules connect to it. Control bus system mainly synchronised all data at one speed for uploading and downloading. Rack(rail) It is the platform on which all modules are mounted. Again the rack is of 4 ,7,10,13 slots . Uploading and downloading of PLC Downloading means you have developed a program and then it is given to the controller. Uploading means you are taking data or a program from the plc controller to your system . Protocols uses in PLC Protocols are the set of instructions used for communication purposes when placed in a network RS232, DH485, Ethernet, profibus, MPI, Profinet, Control net, Device net, USB there are some examples. Applications of PLC in different sectors 1) PLC in coal mining :- In coal mines there are many hazardous gases, gas poisonings. Mine are mostly recognized hazardous areas where accidents take place due to roof fall, gas and dust explosion. By using the PLC system, underground miners' lives can be saved. The safety system is driven by plc and with its features like alarm system, gas monitoring system it takes real time decisions to overcome the problems. 2) Food industry:- It is used in food processing, packaging ,and labelling systems. Hygiene is most impotent in the food system for this plc is used. Dairy products, Beverages, ready to use products, edible oil industry plc are used. 3) Water treatment:- The process like sedimentation, chlorination, oxidation, grit removal are done with the help of plc. 4) Wind turbine monitoring system:- To reduce the maintained cost and improve turbine performance. 5) Building management system :- Internal and external light control, fire detection, alarm system, security system, water level monitoring, protection of devices after power failure,car parking. Được ra đời từ rất sớm, tuy nhiên đến thời điểm hiện tại dòng sản phẩm Logo của Siemens vẫn còn được cải tiến và sản xuất. S7-200 Siemens
Siemens xếp S7-200 vào dòng PLC cỡ nhỏ (Micro PLCs). Tuy nhiên nó cung cấp khả năng đủ cho nhiều loại ứng dụng điều khiển khác nhau. PLC S7-200 hỗ trợ đầy dủ các lệnh như logic, bộ đếm, bộ định thời, các phép tính toán học phức tạp và các hàm truyền thông.
PLC S7-200 hỗ trợ nhiều loại module như Digital Input, Digital Output, Analog Input, Analog Output, AS-i (CP243-2), module điều khiển vị trí (EM253), modem (EM241), thernet (CP243-1), Ethernet IT (CP243-1 IT), PROFIBUS-DP (EM277).
Phần mềm lập trình cho PLC S7-200 là Step7-Micro/Win, phiên bản mới nhất là V4.0, các bản cập nhật là SP9 có thể cài trên Window7. Ngoài ra Siemens còn cung cấp thêm gói AddOn cung cấp thư viện mở rộng như các hàm truyền thông với Modbus,..
Cáp lập trình cho S7-200 sử dụng Micro/Win là cáp PC/PPI USB sử dụng cổng USB, hoặc PC/PPI RS232 sử dụng cổng COM bình thường. Sử dụng cáp này, ta có thể download/upload chương trình, xem online giá trị các biến, trạng thái chương trình đang chạy dưới S7-200. Ngôn ngữ lập trình cho PLC S7-200 là LAD/STL/FBD, thông thường nhất là sử dụng LAD.
Đến thời điểm hiện tại dòng PLC S7-200 đã ngừng sản xuất, tuy nhiên với lịch sử hào hùng của mình thì S7-200 vẫn là cái tên đáng chú ý trong họ PLC.
Các dòng PLC S7-200 Siemens được biết đến như: CPU 221, CPU 222, CPU 224, CPU224XP và CPU226. Ngoài ra, còn có dòng S7-200 SMART: CPU CR40, CPU CR60, CPU SR20, CPU SR30, CPU SR40, CPU SR60, CPU ST20, CPU ST30, CPU ST40, CPU ST60.
S7-1200 Siemens
PLC S7-1200 là dòng PLC thay thế S7-200, thuộc dòng PLC nhỏ, được dùng cho máy móc, dây chuyền nhỏ hoặc các hệ thống nhỏ, được trang bị các chức năng đầy đủ như truyền thông, analog, HSC, PWM/PTO,…Tính năng đầy đủ, lập trình đơn giản và giá thành rẻ nên S7-1200 có mức độ phổ biến cao, được sử dụng rất nhiều trong công nghiệp.
Về tính năng nó tương đương với S7-200, tuy nhiên nó là một cách tiếp cận hoàn toàn khác. S7-1200 không có cổng PPI như S7-200 mà sử dụng cổng Ethernet cho các chức năng download/upload/monitor. Module Ethernet onboard trong S7-1200 tương dương với module Ethernet hoặc Ethernet IT của S7-200 tùy loại sản phẩm. Cách làm việc với cổng Ethernet của S7-200 hoàn toàn tương đương với các module Ethernet này.
Phần mềm lập trình cho PLC S7-1200 là TIA, đây là gói phần mềm mới của Siemens hỗ trợ lập trình cho các PLC (S7-1200. S7-300, S7-400), HMI. Tuy nhiên chỉ một số loại sản phẩm được hỗ trợ với phần mềm này. S7-1200 chỉ hỗ trợ ngôn ngữ lập trình LAD, không hỗ trợ STL.
Các dòng PLC S7-1200 Siemens được biết đến như:
Standard CPUs: CPU 1211C, CPU 1212C, CPU 1214C, CPU 1215C, CPU 1217C.

S7-300 Siemens
PLC S7-300 là dòng PLC cỡ trung, với khả năng tính toán nhanh hơn, quản lý số lượng I/O nhiều hơn nên phù hợp với các ứng dụng vừa và lớn, thường dùng cho dây chuyền, hệ thống vừa và lớn. Giá thành cao hơn nên PLC S7-300 chỉ phù hợp với các ứng dụng lớn có chi phí cao hơn.
PLC S7-300 là một dòng hoàn toàn khác với S7-200. Nó và S7-400 được sử dụng chủ yếu cho các hệ thống SCADA hiện nay. S7-300 hỗ trợ các cấu trúc mạng chuẩn của Siemens gồm Ethernet, Profibus-DP, AS-i, Serial/Modbus, … cho phép người dùng xây dựng các cấu trúc mạng đáp ứng các hệ thống lớn theo nhu cầu đặc biệt là hệ thống phân tán.
Về mặt điều khiển nó cũng hỗ trợ tất cả các lệnh để xử lý các công việc điều khiển như S7-200, tuy nhiên nó xử lý nhanh hơn dòng S7-200.
Phần mềm dùng để cấu hình và lập trình cho S7-300 là Step7 Manager, phiên bản mới nhất là V5.5. Cáp lập trình cho S7-300 thông thường là cáp PCAdapter USB sử dụng giao thức MPI với cổng USB. Ngôn ngữ lập trình cho S7-300 có thể là LAD/STL/FBD/SCL/GRAPH.

S7-400 Siemens
PLC S7-400 được xem là trùm cuối của sự mạnh mẽ, với cấu trúc Hot-Standby cho khả năng dự phòng nóng CPU chạy song song, khả năng quản lý số lượng I/O rất lớn, tốc độ tính toán xử lý lệnh cao nên PLC S7-400 phù hợp với các hệ thống DCS điều khiển nhà máy, dây chuyền lớn. Tuy nhiên giá thành của dòng S7-400 cũng rất cao nên việc sử dụng dòng PLC này cũng ít hơn các dòng thấp hơn.
PLC S7-400 là một sự mở rộng của PLC S7-300 với bộ nhớ lớn hơn, số lượng I/O lớn hơn, bộ xử lý mạnh mẽ hơn, … cho phép vận hành với các hệ thống lớn hơn nhiều so với S7-300. S7-400 được thiết kế để làm việc với một số hệ chuẩn do Siemens thiết kế như PCS7, CEMAT, … mà S7-300 không có được (chẳng hạn các khối tạo message).
Phần mềm dùng để lập trình cho S7-400 vẫn là Step7 Manager, các kiểu kết nối và ngôn ngữ lập trình đều giống như S7-300
