Season 1, Episode 18: MMMPop!

Favorite quote/moment: Every time Darryl goes full "embarrass my kid in front of their friend" mode is great.

General thoughts:

They do sports intro recaps a lot, I'm starting to realize. I guess it makes sense. And it's very dad.

This is a fun episode. We get to meet the Hotties. Yeet and Killa are really cool NPCs, and it's great to see Grant get to interact with someone of his age.

The stuff with the toilet is hilarious. Clever use of detect magic. The Dimidome sword and the teleportation orbs come in clutch later! I'm glad they took the time to get them.

Poor Grant. Darryl has great "embarrass my kid" energy. It's so delightfully cringe.

Will is great as the second announcer. It's a reminder that I'm so envious of all their improv skills.

Next up - the chimera moment. Oof.

The phone call between Neil, Miles, and Britta after Zantosa escapes has to be one of the funniest scenes in the show thus far. Neil's absolute incredulousness with Miles' indignance. Top tier dynamic honestly.

Pulling this out of my watching Quantum Leap (2022) Episode 1x18 Post:

I fucking love it when actresses know how to hold the guns their characters are using. I mean, the actress who plays Addison was military for like seven years, so she would know. But, like, they almost NEVER train actresses how to hold their weapons.

Her stance is perfect. Her arm is bent, her firing hand is properly supported, the gun is in her line of sight, the way she follows him with her firearm up? *chef's kiss.*

They need to train women how to hold guns like this on screen because whether the audience knows how to hold a firearm or not, this just aesthetically looks better because of how confident a stance it comes off as naturally.

Just realised a parallel that leaves Much to Unpack:

I feel like this is an underrated parallel that I wished to talk about. I just find it interesting that s1ep18, Land Before Swine, is something that hits harder given what we know of the Science Project Incident in A Tale of Two Stans. In both incidents, Stan’s careless mistake costed his loved ones something that they cherished (his negligence caused Waddles to be taken by a dinosaur and Ford lost a potential scholarship to a good college). I also find it interesting how he raises his arms defensively the same way in both confrontations.

I think this ep is important in the sense that stan goes thru a mini arc where he realises that he’s once again on the brink of losing his relationship with a loved one because he didn’t immediately take accountability or come clean. Listen, I know im a stan stan who understands that maybe him being defensive/doubling down on the lie stems from years of being accused of stuff or worried about the other person’s reaction/punishment or a combination of both. But I also acknowledge that bro lowkey dismissed ford’s reasonable frustration just cuz the turn of events was suddenly convenient for Stan cuz ford not getting into west coast tech meant that their original childhood dream was back on (Tho Ofc him getting kicked out was def a disproportionate response to said offense). In a similar way, he temporarily forgets abt Mabel’s missing pig that she cares a lot about to remark about what a great money making opportunity the sap covered dinos are. He still inadvertently hurt them through that even if he never meant to. So that’s why it’s so important for him to maybe somehow recognise the similarities. Which leads to him immediately stepping up to help mabel get her pig back in the same way he wished he could’ve immediately came clean to ford about the project before the science fair.

And I’m joking when I say that, but like I do find it super interesting how Zenix does have these very moral extremes, often all at once.

Shooting Garroth on a patrol he refused to let Aphmau join because he was worried she’d get hurt. Kidnapping Burt (which he was originally planning on doing, apparently) but telling the other SKs to leave Kiva be.

It’s clear that he has An Agenda, his cruelty is to fit that, only only really that. Right now, his Agenda is killing Garroth, and he Shot him, and now his job is to make sure that sticks. How? By taking out the only available healer in the area. Even with injuring Brendan, you can kind of try and imply that it was some long-set plan, injuring him as a practice (the injuries are EXACTLY the same, apparently), and to use up the very finite resource of Citrus Herb…

Because I do read this as being about Zenix, though obviously it can be ambiguous without more details. Just because he did have Burt when Aph sees him, Vylad doesn’t talk, and Zenix is kind of known for sweet-turned-mean… which all characterise the ‘masked man’ as Kiva describes him. The only inaccurate descriptor is ‘mask’ because it’s a helmet, not a mask, and so it COULD be about Vylad, but I doubt it. I just think it’s Jesson inaccuracy, and also from the recollection of a child.. so…

Small addition, after finishing the episode; he is also fleeing the Nether with a lasso I think it’s pretty obvious it’s him. Even if Jess does bait us with him and Vylad a lot and switch them in certain situations
