High school me

This was me when I was in high school.

When I was in highschool, I was so aggressive and cynical. I cannot tolerate bullies in my eyes. In China, people value a lot about one’s family background so the teachers tried their best to ignore my behaviors because of my parents’ close relationship with school presidents. (I believe Americans also do but I think Chinese are snobbish in a far more obvious way because the society generally encourages these behaviors). Actually I once naively thought they are tolerant to me was because I was smart. I was so arrogant. It is funny to recall that.

Despite of that, I had a beautiful time with many sincere friends and many understandable teachers. I started to understand what others say that the teenage friendships are the most innocent ones recently. I am not saying my current relationships are vulgar. They are just more complicated. I, we were too naive to calculate everything even if we wanted.

I loved studying, helping others, engaging different interests groups, and of course, dating. I think during high school, I really knew nothing about anything. I was so bald. And that experience provides me a foundation of explorating my life and establishing my clear views of the world in college time.

I tried a lot of things. I skied on the ice and swam in the river(illegally though), climbed a lot of mountains, read a lot of books, travelled to several continents, played 3 or more instruments, ate every kind of food in this world, learned languages…

Though I seek stimulus, I never drink, smoke or play video games. To explain this, My friend, Laura once spoke with me, saying she thought “something like reading or traveling can be beneficial because they are trying to add something to your life and finally we will internally realize their values. But something such as video games, although it could be entertaining, but we are sensitive enough to find that it is negative because all it can do to our lives is consuming them.” I am not judging those who love these activities. I believe they are as entertaining as reading or travelling if not more. We just choose different ways to appericiate life.

I am a psychology and human resources person. I believe the surface of the information can only display a very limited part of the person. I know people more through how they describe themselves than what they say. What I have talked about myself may be less important than in what ways I choose to talk about myself. I think this works for everyone. Simple datas or the looks cannot deliever true messages about who they are. But the descriptions about my highschool life above can reveal more about myself than simple questionnaries. I believe this is what modern selfie trully means, to deliever a more humane, personal, lively and true image to more people, in order to get a bigger chance to generate close relationships.

My friend went to Jordan last year and volunteered at a Syrian refugee camp; She showed me pictures and videos of her experience and despite all the horrible experiences these Syrian children had (losing their homes and even parents, siblings, friends etc) I was pleasantly surprised and just taken aback by how every child was full of smiles and laughs... Smiles and laughs in spite of every terrible thing they have been through, things I can even imagine happening to myself or my loved ones. That's why I chose this picture, because life is too short and too good for me to not be smiling and laughing all the time. If the children of the worst humanitarian crisis of our lifetime can do it, so can I :)
