It's only February but my most anticipated fantasy HW car of the year (so far) is already here - behold the tiny majesty of the Kei Swap. I'm a huge fan of kei cars in general, which means I love it by default, and the superbly '90s Memphis-inspired livery is another point in its favour. Usually I avoid the art cars series because of their coloured wheels but the metallic teal on black three-spoke wheels look awesome.

Like a number of unlicensed cars over the years, it's not really a fantasy vehicle at all, but contrary to what I expected it isn't a modified Mighty K. From what I can see, Mighty K is actually a relatively stock 10th generation (2014 to present) Daihatsu Hijet S500P truck, whereas I think Kei Swap is a customised 8th generation Daihatsu Atrai (the Hijet van version) S120C panel van…except it has a Honda K-series engine (the thing that powers the Civic type R) crammed in the back; at a guess, for simplicity's sake it'd be the RWD S120 not the 4WD S130C, as I imagine it would be hard enough to fit a 2-litre DOHC+VTEC inline 4 into a chassis built to take a 660cc I3 without fitting a 4WD drivetrain in too.

Of course, it's all theoretical since there's no actual engine or drivetrain in a Hot Wheels. However, if you inspect the back window, while it's frosted, noting the chequered stripe and the Shoshinsha mark (a.k.a. Wakaba mark, the V-shaped design commonly seen in yellow and green in Japan resembling a young, unfolding leaf, which tells people the driver is inexperienced or nervous - also often found on drift vehicles as a joke given how they weave around the road) clearly there is something in there.

Once we disassemble the thing, we can find the load is a full set of those awesome wheels (modelled closely on the classic but now discontinued Advan SA3R), a BMX and a ghetto blaster inside, resing on a chequered floor. Also note the spilled drink cup on the passenger seat floor. I really love when cars have details like this, they really give these castings life. The sunroof would vive a good view of these things normally but being an Art Car, on this edition there's a letter on the top. Given it's scratched I'm tempted to try and remove the white of the letter entirely.

Sadly the 3-sides only printing rules left the van without front detail but I wasn't about to leave it like that. The angry lights resemble partly-obscured Honda Acty or Suzuki Carry lights of roughly the era, but the asymmetric grille slots are definitely a Daihatsu thing to my eye. The windscreen has a frosted shade-band element, which I can never resist giving some contrasting colour to.

It also has an intercooler and a tow-hitch above its ground-scraping splitter, and the widebody boasts Testarossa-like strakes along the sides. Kei van customs are a relative rarity in my experience of Japanese vehicles, but they are out there - most common in the crowded custom JDM van scene is the Hiace or NV350 for the less moneyed vanster, and the people-carriers with luxury features, the Vellfires and StepWgns ("You're not my real Wgn!") and Autech ElGrands for the really fancy. Hoping HW steps up to some of these before too long, and keeps the kei goodness coming too. This is one casting I know I'll get more of as they emerge.
