if you happen to be a Secrets of a Summer Night fan (which I am told is relatively rare, sadly) then I'd strongly recommend Phoebe by S.M LaViolette/Minerva Spencer for the following reasons:
She's from an impoverished aristocratic family.
He's a uber wealthy second gen rich guy whose family made their money from iron so he's good at Business Stuff and not accepted by the ton
She says some horrifically classist shit about him that he overhears while he's leasing her estate her family can't afford
He coerces her into marriage by tacitly threatening to marry one of her sisters and obviously she'd NEVER foist this HUGE GINORMOUS OBSCENELY WEALTHY UGLY-HOT MAN on her poor innocent sisters
he's basically her family's sugar daddy
He's caressed her ankles at least twice already

fellas, is it normal to feed the object of your vengeance her favorite meal and also champagne and the finest of red wines before having sex with her twice more in the same night (after the first incredibly quick time)? is it normal to take the object of your revenge out on the town and rent a barge and start physically shaking and fighting back the urge to vomit when she says things that remind you of your revenge plot that's going to break her heart?

Reading the latest S.M. LaViolette and this man…this man legitimately couldn’t figure out what a normal thing to get a woman for her birthday might be and instead…brought her a trussed up former client who had abused her, like he was a cat dropping a dead mouse at the foot of its mistress’s bed, at which point the following exchange occurred:

REVIEW
The Music of Love
by Minerva Spencer writing as S.M. LaViolette
The Academy of Love #1
Twisted tale with two unusual characters finding that together they might have a better life than apart. This book had a LOT going on in it with an albino male lead that has managed to thrive, make quite a bit of money, and live well in a rather solitary existence. He “knows” that his affliction will keep him apart. He has made a life for himself without expecting more. Portia Stefano is on her way to be Eustace “Stacy” Harrington’s music instructor hoping he will hire her instead of the man he thinks will be arriving. She has secrets of her own but is a brilliant musician and pianist.
This is a steamy story with two passionate characters coming together early on and then often. There are unscrupulous characters, twists and turns, misunderstandings, fights followed by silences, making up after the fights, some very unscrupulous characters including blackmailers and murderers. This is not the most believable historical romance I have ever read but it was a fun way to spend the day. I was happy that the baddies were unveiled and dealt with and that there was a happily ever after for Stacy and Portia.
Did I enjoy this book? It was okay
Would I read more in this series? I think so
Thank you to Booksprout and the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 3-4 Stars
  BLURB
Finding out that her husband was a bigamist didn’t devastate Portia Stefani; she held her head high when she forced him out of her life. But losing her beloved music school as a result of the traitorous bastard's gambling debts almost destroyed her. The only way she’ll be able to make ends meet is to accept a lucrative tutoring position in remote Cornwall. What Portia hasn't anticipated is the life-altering impact that her mesmerizing new employer has on her. Stacy Harrington learned the hard way to keep people at a distance. Playing the piano is the only thing that makes his solitary life enjoyable these days, and he’ll be damned if he allows his albinism to keep him from everything he loves. Bringing a private music tutor into his home is disruptive, but it’s the only solution. Unfortunately, nothing could have prepared him for the overwhelming attraction he feels toward his fiery new employee. It’s not long before a shared passion for music develops into something infinitely deeper. But when ghosts from the past—along with some very dark secrets—emerge to threaten everything they’ve built, can Stacy and Portia continue to make beautiful music together? Or will their happily ever after end on a painful, discordant note?

   AUTHOR BIO
Who is S.M. LaViolette? S.M. (that’s short for Shantal Marie) writes super spicy historical romance and historical erotic romance. S.M. likes to write about heroes and heroines who don't fit the mold--that means heroes who aren't always dukes and heroines who aren't always virgins. People have described S.M.'s style as dark, angsty, and dryly witty. S.M. also writes historical romance under the pen name Minerva Spencer, and historical mystery under S.M. Goodwin. S.M. has been a criminal prosecutor, college history teacher, B&B operator, dock worker, ice cream manufacturer, reader for the blind, motel maid, and bounty hunter. Okay, so the part about being a bounty hunter is a lie. S.M. does, however, know how to hypnotize a Dungeness crab, sew her own Regency Era clothing, knit a frog hat, juggle, rebuild a 1959 American Rambler, and gain control of Asia (and hold on to it) in the game of RISK.

Author Interview: Minerva Spencer
Author Interview: Minerva Spencer
This week I have the pleasure of visiting with a writer of many talents and many noms de plume.  S.M. Goodwin is one of the pen names used by S.M. LaViolette, a Canadian transplant who lives in the mountains of New Mexico. She began writing in 2013 after closing her 8-room bed and breakfast (a subject she will never write about …). Among many other things, she’s been a criminal prosecutor,…

NOVA AUTORA DA @leabharbooksbr !!! . . #MinervaSpencer #LeabharBooks #Amazon https://www.leabharbooks.com/ https://www.instagram.com/p/B6_DHQWDUxf/?igshid=1jofautvav90n

Hi, do you happen to have any fave recs for a heroine in disguise trope? It can be e.g. a heroine that wants to seem mousy/inconspicuous at first sight (Cat in Married by Morning) or perhaps a heroine with secret indentity (Chase in Never Judge a Lady By Her Cover)....? I know it's more common in historicals but it can be modern rom com too. Thank you in advance!
Hi! Sorry for the delay. Here are the ones I could think of off the top of my head:
The Wolf and the Wildflower by Stacy Reid: The heroine's been disguised as a man her entire life because her mother didn't want to go through childbirth again so she lied and said she was a boy to her husband. She's now a psychologist and is invited to help this WOLFY DUKE who's been in the wilds of Alaska for years and needs help getting reacclimated to society. I can confirm he susses her out as a woman within moments of meeting her and by susses her out he SNIFFS her out.
The Courtesan Duchess by Joanna Shupe: Exactly what it says on the tin; the hero and heroine are married but have been estranged for years. Her situation is getting pretty desperate so she disguises herself as a courtesan and goes to him in Italy where he's been fucking around for like 8 years and tries to seduce him into getting her pregnant.
The Good Girl's Guide to Rakes by Eva Leigh: The heroine asks the hero to take her to all his demimonde haunts so she disguises herself with a wig and makeup as "Salome".
Her Husband’s Harlot by Grace Callaway: Another heroine who disguises herself as a prostitute to find her husband except he doesn't recognizes her and she ends up getting devirginized in a brothel........ and then goes back for a repeat experience.
Her Wanton Wager by Grace Callaway: This heroine really tries to slap on a mustache to go meet this underworld gambling hell owner so she can persuade him to let go of her brother's debts, except obviously the hero recognizes she's a woman in 10 seconds after ripping her mustache off.
Duke of Pleasure by Elizabeth Hoyt: She's THE GHOST OF ST. GILES, also, she does disguise herself as a boy because it's easier to be a boy on the streets; the hero is soooo confused and sooooo turned on by it.
The Bride Goes Rogue by Joanna Shupe: She attends a costume ball/mildly an orgy as Madame de Pompadour and hooks up with the hero who is conveniently dressed as Louis XV. Neither of them recognize each other as their betrothed until the hero called it off quite recently.
Hyacinth by Minerva Spencer/S.M. LaViolette: Another heroine disguised as a man; in this case, she's quite the card shark and wants to get into the good gambling places so she can earn back her family's fortune. The hero figures out it's a disguise but kind of plays along and teases her, culminating in him asking her to jerk off with him in a voyeur room 💀
His Valet by S.M. LaViolette: So our modern understanding of this MC is that they would be nonbinary but Jo does refer to herself using she/her pronouns. This disguise here is twofold: she dresses in masculine clothing and works as the hero's valet, and because she really wants to be with the hero, she disguises herself as a woman and pretends to be a prostitute so she can sleep with him. It's WILD but LaViolette handles it with a lot of care.
One Kiss to Desire by Grace Callaway: The heroine purposely makes herself look uglier/older so she can get the job as the hero's housekeeper.
Rules of Engagement by Christina Dodd: Another heroine who disguises herself to look uglier/older; the hero actually specifies it as a qualification for the governess he's looking to hire for the child he BOUGHT to make himself look more respectable; apparently the good-looking servants keep throwing themselves at him because he's soooo hot so he needs a complete uggo to serve his purposes.

I’m a WHORE for bodyguard romances but I haven’t read them in a veeeeeerrrrrry long time.
Any recs???
Absolutelyyyy
Princess by Gaelen Foley. A newer all-time favorite of mine, the ultimate bodyguard book imo. He was raised by her parents after the age of 13, she's a princess, he feels unworthy as hell but is also an ELITE killer.... She wants to be with him so badly and puts her entire back into trying to seduce him. He gravitates between going "GET OFF ME" *shakes leg she's currently clinging to* and "you're a bad girl huh" because he's so trying to resist but is also desperately in love with/horny for her. Alternates between perfect angst and perfect hilarity. He fucks her while probably bleeding internally. *chef's kiss*
Dearest Rogue by Elizabeth Hoyt. No bodyguard romance rec list can go without this one! He's a retired captain of the guard, she's a duke's sister who's recently lost her vision. He's suuuuper into her but is all "I'm OLD, and she's a DUKE'S SISTER". But then some motherfucker tries to kidnap her (future hero of another book, naturally) and they have to go on the run. There's only one bed (and one of the best dry humping scenes I've ever read) ensues.
The Duke Identity by Grace Callaway. This one is a lot of fun because she's an underworld princess, and he's actually working for the feds, but he's undercover as her bodyguard and she's actually a nightmare woman who one day decides she must have him and doggedly pursues him like her life depends on it. Also, he wears glasses.
A Fated Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen. A fantasy romance based on viking culture; the heroine is coerced into marrying this gross old man because of a prophecy, but he really has zero interest in her sexually. And then he's all "POWERFUL STRONG MEGARAKE SON OF MINE, YOU SHALL GUARD HER WITH YOUR LIFE". Not realizing that she met the son first and they had a Moment. Has a scene where he fingerbangs her in the furs~ with like, seventy people including his dad sleeping nearby.
The Professional by Kresley Cole. A Russian mafia book; the heroine turns out to be the secret daughter of a mob boss, and the hero is sent in to collect her/protect her. Verrry kinky, very hot, very fun.
Joss and The Countess by S.M. LaViolette. Joss is technically Alicia's footman, but she's actually employed him to be her bodyguard while she (a widow 12 years his senior) bops around town trying to find a lover now that her husband is dead. Joss.... is a former gigolo.... and knows EXACTLY what she needs. Which is a dom. A dom who will toss her about the bedroom.
Heart of Iron by Bec McMaster. Paranormal historical, a fluttery debutante type girl gets involved with some undercover mission stuff. The hero, a virgin werewolf, is assigned as her bodyguard. The problem: he can't have sex with her, because werewolfitude is passed through bodily fluids!!!!
Moonglow by Kristen Callihan. Another paranormal historical werewolf book, the hero is the heroine's unofficial bodyguard because someone is trying to kill her. She's a witch, he's a Scottish werewolf rake, he's also recently had problems getting it up... But those problems sure don't seem to be an issue around HER...
Temptation of the Highlander by Elisa Braden. The heroine fled England because someone was stalking her, and the hero is a massive Scot who's been enlisted to protect her. You know how it goes.
Knockout by Sarah MacLean. Blueblood Imogen keeps getting into trouble because she blows things up. Detective Tommy gets hired by her family to protect her; the family does not know that Tommy and Imogen have been circling each other for mONTHS.
Waiting for a Scot Like You by Eva Leigh. A widow on her way to an orgy (because she can finally have fun now that her husband is dead) enlists a Scottish veteran as her bodyguard. He's very grumpy, and also very dominant.
The Lyonesse Series (ongoing) by Sierra Simone. BUT OF COURSE. Tristan is hired as the bodyguard for Mark, who he begins a sexual relationship with... only to find out that Mark is engaged to Isolde (they have an agreement, it's not really cheating). And when Mark sends a heartbroken Tristan over to collect Isolde for the wedding... shit goes down.
(He goes down.)
Lord of Danger by Anne Stuart. Anne Stuart usually has primary and secondary romances in her historicals. The primary romance doesn't have a bodyguard thing (though it's delicious) but the secondary one does. And it's GREAT, because the hero is a knight sworn to celibacy, and the heroine is a beautiful flirt who drives him INSANE.

Can you recommend a book with a good doggy style scene?
It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas: I was surprised I'd forgotten this one! I think what made this hot was that Lillian is so out of it after one orgasm (and one he deliberately withholds) that Westcliff is "arranging" her on her stomach before they do it doggy-style.
Duke of Depravity by Scarlett Scott: The transformation of Crispin from pathetic -> not is complete with this scene; he's very "tell me you're mine", gets a little spanky, a little bite-y, and when Jacinda finally agrees, he goes for it.
Wicked Again by Kathleen Ayers: They're hot. They're older (she's 49, he's 40). A little thing like an ankle injury isn't gonna stop Haddon from going "we're MORE than a dalliance bby!" as he bends Marissa over.
When A Girl Loves An Earl by Elisa Braden: James is muddy and doesn't want to *soil* Viola but Viola can't be stopped, which ends with her on all fours on a couch and Jamie uttering the winning line, "Take yer filthy Scot inside ye now, Viola."
The Chief by Monica McCarty: An emotional doggy-style scene; for background, Tor thought Christina was a prostitute his buddies had sent him (and she was there to get compromised) so he nearly took her from behind. Now when they're married and she asked for it, he's all "are you sure?!?!?" and the funny thing is even after they go at it doggy style he flips her over because he wants to see her face when they orgasm.
I would like to note that I nearly added McCarty's The Saint to this list but when I checked, Magnus only said to Helen "I hope you like it from behind" because he thought she was someone else, but he stopped when he realized it was her and never following through in the entirety of the book so now I'm sad :(
A Rogue's Rules for Seduction by Eva Leigh: The tail-end of Dom and Willa's fuck cabin sex marathon; a standout more so because of everything that comes before it and when he does just before it (he eats her ass; a rarity in HR), but it's very hot.
His Countess by S.M. LaViolette: More of a historical erotic romance; you know that when they do it doggy-style after he a) eats her ass, and b) asks if she's been doing her kegels (30 minutes a day! for his pleasure and hers!).
A Daring Pursuit by Kate Bateman: Post-bear chase! It's adrenaline-fueled and a little rough in a very good way.
Also, if you'd like a list of specifically bending-her-over-the-desk moments, here it is.

would you be willing to rec books that have voyeurism in them?
Sure! This list includes voyeurism that involves the hero and/or the heroine but not necessarily both, and they may be watching other people while getting off on it.
Historical:
The Recruit by Monica McCarty: Mary watches Kenneth have sex with another woman in the stables after wandering in thinking a horse was in distress. Kenneth notices her and puts on a bit of a show.
Her Wanton Wager by Grace Callaway: Percy watches couples getting off through a peephole in Hunt's club, and when Hunt catches her she's sadly contemplating that she'll never be a good girl, but Hunt is like "HELL YEAH YOU AREN'T" and goes to town on her. Truly an affirming scene.
The Duke Who Knew Too Much by Grace Callaway: Ft. some unwitting as well as witting(?) voyeurism; the unwitting bit is when Emma accidentally happens upon some light CNC between the hero Alaric and his mistress at the time; the more purposeful voyeurism is when Alaric kidnaps Emma and takes her to a sex club to observe BDSM scenes to make her understand what he was doing with his mistress and then they make out.
The Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe: We love a good peephole scene; this one takes place during a police raid and Clay and Florence are in a tunnel and happen upon a couple having sex through a partition. Flo makes Clay turn around and they both masturbate to it.
The Bride Goes Rogue by Joanna Shupe: Katherine watches Preston masturbate in the French Ball scene, and later on, he watches her masturbate in front of him in a carriage.
His Countess by S.M. LaViolette: Gideon brings two prostitutes to his new estate and the widow of the last earl, Alys, watches them go at it (with snacks) for multiple nights and he is very aware of this and puts on a show.
You'll find voyeurism in most of the books in LaViolette's Victorian Decadence series, but this is the one that stood out to me.
Contemporary:
Praise by Sara Cate: There's a great scene during the opening of the kink club where Charlie and Emerson are in a dark room watching a couple having sex through the window and he fingers her while they watch.
Eyes on Me by Sara Cate: This book is allll about voyeurism; from what I remember, Garrett hasn't had sex in a decade but he has done plenty of watching. The heroine, his stepsister Mia, is a cam girl on not!OnlyFans and he's a regular viewer. Later on, there's plenty of great exhibitionism scenes as well set in the club.
Give Me More by Sara Cate: Hunter's original fantasy is to watch Drake with his wife Isabel, and this does happen a few times initially (in a kink club, and during a "there was only one bed" hotel room sitch).
When Heroes Fall by Giana Darling: There's this really hot scene where Elena watches Dante jerk off through a crack in his bedroom door, and he calls her name out when he orgasms.
The Professional by Kresley Cole: When Sevastyan first breaks into Natalie's home to kidnap her, he watches her masturbate in the bathtub before he drags her out of there lol. Later on when they're in Paris, he routinely watches her masturbate on security cameras and storms home while she's calmly giving a show.
Only For A Night by Naima Simone: Another sex club voyeurism scene; Rion gets Harper off in the voyeurism room in his aphrodisiac club while they watch another couple through the glass.
Neon Gods by Katee Robert: One of the earlier sex scenes involves Hades and Persephone in a shadowy corner of his in-house kink club and getting off while they watch another couple perform a scene.
A Worthy Opponent by Katee Robert also has some voyeurism stuff from what I remember since it's based around the kink club Hades and Meg run.
