The Wraith releases a curious chitter from his throat as he admires the blade extended to him, recognizing the gesture as equally significant in its nature. He would drop Azaroth's crude vertebrae to the ground in order to extend spindly fingers to trace the hilt of her offering. He does not want to take it from her, though his touch is gentle as it lingers, appreciating the texture and channeling the memories attached to it, his own deep gaze falling upon beautifully sunken, pale features. His admiration is hidden by the metallic mask that covered his muddy face. For beneath it, disfigured features no one could possibly love.

Suddenly, Philip turns and deposits his bell upon a nearby compressed cube of metal; it wasn't something he would dare set upon the ground in an unceremonious fashion. As he returns to face her, the very same spindly fingers extend with extreme caution to Rin's beautifully broken expression. He allows her all the time she might need to pull away and deny his gentle advance before the single tear is wiped away from the corner of her mouth.

Killers and their s/o's pets

some general headcanons for how killers (Hillbilly/Wraith/Spirit/Huntress) would interact with an S/O's pet and how they would feel about various animals.

Max Thompson Jr / The Hillbilly

Max is not great with a lot of animals. Not all of them, but a lot of common domestic animals. A dog or pretty much any farm animal is going to be pretty tough to get him to do anything more than tolerate. He won't hurt them or anything, but he's going to try his best to avoid acknowledging that they're there at all.

Max is fully aware that the way he views these animals isn't fair- they're animals, after all, its not like they've wronged him on purpose. But his negative associations towards them is strong.

Other animals, however, Max is fine with. He might even be okay with small dogs like pugs or shih tzus, as they barely even resemble the police dogs that lead to his dislike of dogs as a whole.

Max likes cats. Partially because the cartoons that provided him small solace from his otherwise horrid life, but he also just enjoys watching the way they move and climb. Is completely unbothered by cats bringing in dead mice or snakes. Might even pet them for doing a 'good job'.

That said, Max also gets... jealous easily. He has a lot of insecurities around the idea of people like his parents valuing animals like pigs more than him.

Just know that if you're giving your pet affection in front of Max, Max is going to want affection to. Just some reassurance that you value him, too.

Max also finds insects to be interesting. He doesn't really like flies, he's seen enough of them and heard enough of their buzzing for a lifetime, but if his S/O keeps things like beetles or butterflies, Max will find that pretty neat. And, another big plus for Max, there's not really much of a way to show affection to or receive affection from an insect, so there's not much for him to get jealous over.

Fish fall into a similar category to insects, especially since Max hasn't really seen that many fish in-person before: not alive ones, anyway.

Philip Ojomo / The Wraith

Philip is good with most animals! He used to leave food in his garage for stray cats, so he has a fondness of cats in particular.

Animals also just like Philip. An old junker dog at Autohaven would bark and growl at every other employee as they came in, but not Philip. After he entered the realm and became 'The Wraith', the crows also seemed to have an affinity towards him, though those aren't exactly 'real' animals.

Still! Philip is fond of most animals and most animals are fond of him. Animals he's not familiar with he's more than happy to learn about.

Leave him alone with an animal and when you come back he will probably be cooing over it and talking to it. Stops being so affectionate when he realizes he's no longer alone.

Not that Philip's trying to hide his fondness of the pet, he'll still pet it and talk fondly of it in front of people, but its more reserved than when he's alone.

Rin Yamaoka / The Spirit

Rin's pretty average with her feelings on and interactions with animals. Likes your standard stuff, is a bit more hesitant with more unusual pets, like snakes or spiders.

Would really like a dog if thats what her S/O's pet is, if her financial situation in life allowed it she would have liked to have one herself, but she's a bit more hesitant now, worried a dog might run off with one of her floating limbs.

Other than that, Rin also gets a bit worried about being affectionate with anything, animals especially. At least with affection towards her S/O, they both know to be cautious of the glass imbedded in Rin's skin, but a lot of animals might not always know better.

Because of this, Rin's more reserved with giving pets or physical affection towards animals, but will give them a lot of silly, affectionate nicknames.

Anna / The Huntress

If you have a pet, you need to establish that with Anna well before introducing her to it.

Its not that the idea of a pet is entirely foreign to Anna; She's seen hunting dogs, and vaguely can recall wishing for one of her own as a young girl.

But that time has long passed, and her default view of anything other than herself and children is 'prey'. Establishing that this particular animal is not prey before introducing Anna to it is best to prevent any misconceptions from taking root in the back of her mind.

Naturally very curious about animals. Observing animals to learn their behaviors and weak points is engrained into her- of course, she won't hurt your pet on purpose once its established to her that it is your pet, but the way she watches it will still feel like a predator stalking its prey.

If you have a dog, she will want to try to use it as a hunting dog. Might be disappointed if its not a kind of dog that can easily be trained to do that, or is just too small for it.

She'll be a bit lost on how to interact with a cat initially, but comes to understand their behavior rather quickly. They're hunters, too, but prefer to hunt alone unlike dogs. She finds it respectable. Will be extremely delighted by a cat bringing back dead mice or snakes; She understands it as the cat bringing back food it hunted for its family. It might not be much of a meal for humans, but she can appreciate the sentiment of it.

Not going to be very affectionate to any animal at first because she isn't sure how to be. Anna will pretty quickly pick up on how her S/O shows affection to their pet and mimic that, though her petting of animals tends to have a bit more force behind it then needed.

Generally likes pets that are predator rather than prey- ironic, considering her rabbit mask. She likes an animal that can help hunt or defend itself.

An unfamiliar form of anxiety begins to creep up Philip’s spine; scraping each vertebrae with doubt and an instinctive hesitation to remove his disguise; to expose himself for the monster he often times felt he resembled. Cold skin against cold metal . . . He could only imagine it. He wanted to feel Rin’s touch against his own, to feel her chilly embrace. If he were to love her with what his own heart was capable of, he had to be authentic with her. Perhaps some might have called him a fool in another time, for growing so fond of someone who’d yet to even see his face. So what was he so scared of? Could what lay beneath the cool steel truly be enough to scare someone such as Rin away? The Fog had made monsters of them all . . .

A soft chitter emanates from the Wraith’s lungs like a purr against her undead palm, and he almost finds himself hoping she can feel the vibration. It was almost like the Wraith’s version of a resigned sigh. Unblinking beneath the metallic facade, Philip merely stares, captivated by her beauty and willing to do anything she asked of him, already, if it meant proving himself worthy of her company. Her compassion. And maybe even her love.

Her words linger poignantly around his swirling consciousness before spindly digits raise to remove the mask in a torturously slow motion, revealing textured skin coated in dried mud. Short locks seemingly sculpted by clay; yet another layer preventing all of him from being seen. But truth be told, the Wraith hadn’t seen his own features unadorned by the mucky earth in quite some time . . . What he had to show was yet another mask of sorts that caked dark ebony skin, disfigured and discolored from flame.

Lids remain closed before milky eyes cast themselves towards the dainty hand upon his chest, daring his sight to interlock with hers without the metallic barrier as the mask was allowed to topple carelessly to the ground. He felt exposed. But there was no one else he would rather reveal himself to than Rin. Calloused, slender digits raise to splay across her own, holding her cold flesh to the beating of his heart.

Rin softly caresses the cool metal that covers the other's face, her lips forming a loving smile. She looks beyond the facade into his glowing, yet mellow gaze. Covering his face hides him from the world, from danger... Even from those he may grow to care for. Not that she could blame him; the world before the entity took them into the fog was even more cruel to Philip than it was to her.

"Your face is part of who you are." Her hand falls softly from his mask and presses lightly against his chest, "I want to know all of you... And will love what I see, regardless."

Let's start with Rin and Leon.

When she first sees Leon, all Rin knows is he's a cop. A police uniform is recognizable regardless of origin. She doesn't know it was his first day that he got pulled into the Fog, or that hell had risen upon the city he was supposed to protect and serve. She knows nothing, except his job.

It infuriates her, because it reminds her how there was no one to protect and serve her and her mother when her father struck them down on the night she was taken by the Fog.

For a few trials, she lets this anger drive her to single out Leon and ensure he didn't make it out of the exit gates or hatch. He doesn't catch on at first, but by the third trial, he realizes that yes, she really is targeting him. For some reason. Just another confusing part of the Entity's realm, or something else?

Eventually he finds out how college kid Rin Yamaoka became the terrifying Spirit. He still doesn't fully get why she's taking it out on him, but it's a start.

There's a set of clothes in this realm that are meant for him and only him. Allegedly, he wears something similar in the future in his world, but the details aren't made clear. He decides to wear those for a Spirit trial to see if she still targets him. It's the first time he's been out of the uniform since RPD, aside from when it and/or him are getting cleaned. First time in a trial.

Rin notices the change just after slicing him with her shattered katana. Her rage subsides, replaced with guilt in a heartbeat. It really is just another man under the uniform. He isn't who she should be angry with. He watches her, standing still, fully aware she could strike him down at any moment. She averts her gaze and slowly walks off somewhere else, sparing him for now.

He continues to remain outside of his uniform in matches against her. She continues to avoid hurting him as much as she can. They don't interact outside of trials just yet.

One day (or is it night? The sky never changes around the Campfire) she's wandering around the outskirts of the Campfire and the woods, looking for something. She's holding her severed left arm in her right hand. Ah, her elbow is missing. One of the other Killers stole it while she was asleep, which in turn meant the rest of her arm couldn't float where it was supposed to, or at all.

Her ancestor, Kazan Yamaoka, dubbed the Oni by both the Entity and people who were alive when he was outside the Fog, is hunting down the perpetrator. No one does anything to his family without retribution. She's embarrassed by the whole ordeal and just wants her elbow back. In her search, she comes close to where the Survivors are kept between trials. Chances are none of them have it or have seen it. She should ask to be sure, but why would they help someone who serves the Entity and sacrifices parts of their souls to him every time she kills them?

Much to her surprise, Leon gets up from his seat at the Campfire and approaches her. He offers to help her find whatever it is she's looking for. She is silent, but doesn't turn him down. She also doesn't say what it is she's looking for, though he's not stupid and figures it out very quickly.

Turns out that asshole Legion (Frank) took it and tossed it into the nearby lake. They find this out after Kazan beats the truth out of him (and rips his tongue out afterwards, though not in front of Carmina/the Artist). It'd be easier for Rin to swim down and find it since she's technically dead and wouldn't need to breathe. Leon dives in before she can make this point and retrieves it himself.

Instead of thanking him right away, she asks him why he helped her. Why wouldn't he? She just gives him a look, then takes her elbow from him and puts it back where it belongs, along with the rest of her arm. She mumbles her thanks before heading back to the Killers' side of the Campfire.

It's still some time before they have a proper conversation.

If you ask either how it started, neither could tell you for sure. It just happens after one of the trials where Rin ended up letting everyone escape and suffered for it at the "hands" of the Entity. She is sitting by that lake her elbow was once tossed into, in severe pain. Sitting with the Killers isn't an option. Many revel in the pain of others. The Survivors would love to watch her suffer as well. Leon approaches her with one of his med kits and offers to help her again. She gives a small shrug and nod, then moves to sit on a stump to make it easier for him.

As he gently tends to her wounds, he properly introduces himself to her. She already knew his name from hearing other survivors call out to him during trials, but that didn't matter. He asks for hers, since he doesn't want to call her just Spirit. She gives it with some reluctance. And then they just start chatting. Small talk full of awkward silences that somehow shifted to an actual conversation. It distracts her from the sting of the antiseptic. This almost seems normal, like two people hanging out by a lake and not trapped in a hell dimension. Talking with Leon is easier than having a conversation with literally anyone else Rin has ever known, even her own family. She doesn't know why. She's grateful, though. And he's grateful for the chance to make an unlikely friend in this never-ending nightmare.

Kazan doesn't approve of Rin befriending their prey. It'll just make it harder to do her duty and he doesn't want her to suffer more than she already does. Ada tries to convince Leon it's too risky to trust a Killer and that Rin will probably betray him. Rin understands the risk she's taking, but she admits she's tired of feeling alone. As an outcast amongst the Killers, she has no one. Leon is the first person to reach out to her without ulterior motives. She's going to keep him in her life, even if it hurts. And Leon doesn't really know what to make of Ada since they came into the Fog together, so he simply ignores her concerns. After all, she would know about betraying his trust, now wouldn't she? Doesn't help that she seems older (her bio makes it sound like she didn't enter the Fog until sometime around/during RE4, even though her default outfit is the one she has in RE2R) and more used to manipulating him/having him listen to her without really questioning it. Don't act like you know him, Ada, when as far as he knows you only just met before he was taken by the Entity. Stay outta his life. He'll befriend whoever he wants. (You're not his real dad. or mom.)

At some point in their budding friendship, Leon asks why Rin never removed the glass shards from her body. They've started opening up about more personal things, so he knows why she has them from the woman herself. At first, she teases him about him being tired of getting his clothes torn up every time she puts him on her shoulder in a trial. Trying to make light of it. All she gets in return is a small, sad smile. There are a couple reasons, she admits. She's not sure the Entity will let her since she doesn't serve it well. These shards have been a part of her for so long. She's almost afraid to lose them because she'd kind of be losing a part of herself. She's already lost so much...

Babe, that's the trauma talking.

Leon asks as politely as possible if he can try to remove at least the big shards from her. If the Entity doesn't stop him or doesn't make them reappear, then it should be all right to remove the rest. Only if she's okay with it, though. He'd never pressure her to do anything she doesn't want. It's worth a shot. He fetches one of his med kits once again. As gently as he can, he starts taking the glass out of her left shoulder. The big one he'll save for last, since it'll probably be the most painful.

She flinches, winces, hisses with every shard, but manages to hold still enough to not cause any issues with the extractions. When he wonders how bad it hurts, she simply replies that it's nothing she can't handle and she's felt worse. Not the most reassuring thing, but better than the alternative. The glass is surprisingly clean. Not much blood at all. Except that really big one, which is messy and super fucking painful to the point Rin has to bite her tongue to try to stop from screaming and still fails. Startles poor Leon, who is then full of apologies. Rin senses her ancestor's approach and quickly shouts for her greats-grandfather to go away, she's fine! just before the Oni can do any harm to Leon for "causing" her pain. The Oni stops dead in his tracks. Leon holds his ground, though he would rather be crouching behind something. Rin, holding her shoulder, calmly explains that her friend is helping her with something and to leave it at that. After a moment, Kazan huffs then walks back towards the Killers' side of the Campfire. Crisis averted. Good. No one really knows what happens if they're killed outside of a trial, if the Entity would even allow that.

Once all the big pieces of glass are out of Rin's shoulder, Leon patches her up, cleaning the bloodless wounds and bandaging them, being extra careful in the area where the largest was. He empties out the entire kit. The shards of glass take the place of medical supplies within, to be discarded later. They both hope this works, because they'd hate for her to have suffered for temporary relief.

When the shards haven't magically reappeared in her body after a few days, they decide to have a go at taking out the rest. Leon is also trying to find some more suitable attire for his friend, because he doesn't think Rin deserves to have to go around almost fully naked for however long they're stuck in the Entity's realm. Why is she even stuck in torn sarashi, anyway? She doesn't know. She wasn't even wearing that when she died--she was still in her work clothes. The Entity is weird...

Rin is able to obtain a full outfit and, after Leon has removed what they believe is the final glass shard from her body, finally gets to wear proper clothes again. And shoes. She's kind of missed shoes. Walking around everywhere barefoot sucks so much. (Have you seen the floor/ground of most levels?) It's strange to not have glass sticking out of her, but in a good way. Her chronic pain has lessened, too. Overall, she's happier, which in turn makes Leon happier.

The joy is short-lived, however. When next she wakes up, all of Leon's hard work has been undone. Not only that, it's like she just fell through the window again, freshly painful. She can't help crying because of it. The Entity let them go through the motions with hope only to take it all away. Even her new clothes are gone. Many of the other Killers find it to be unusually cruel. The rest are indifferent, think it was obvious the Entity would do this, or find her suffering amusing. Those that do the latter are careful to keep it to themselves to avoid being the victim of the Oni's wrath.

Once he learns of this, Leon comes to Rin's side without hesitation. Yes, he's surrounded by Killers and it's dangerous as hell, but his friend needs him, so who cares? He's there for her. She doesn't think they should try again, because there's no point if the Entity is going to pull such bullshit on them. He offers her his jacket. She tries to refuse. It'll just get torn up by the glass, and there's no guarantee the Entity will let her keep it, anyway. He won't take it back from her. Stubborn ass...With a sigh, she reluctantly puts it on, wincing when that huge shard tears through it at the shoulder. He thinks it looks better on her. She thinks he's crazy.

The Entity lets her have this one thing.

Mostly when I play Rin, I play friendly. Unless the survivors are assholes and/or I have a challenge that requires death. And even when I kill, I almost always spare anyone playing Leon.

So that got me thinking of these three potentially becoming friends, despite one being a Killer and their very different backgrounds.

I hope to write it out properly, but for now, it'll have to be an outline of sorts, which will be done in reblogs of this post.

Author's Note: Rin is an absolute sweetheart when she ain't trying to kill you.

Anyone that had associated with or even had been close to Rin, whether it was becoming studies partners through studies at the Takamatsu or happening to be on the same shift as she had been at the restaurant, they would know that she was living quite the stressful life. Yet, despite that it was only adding more onto her stress levels, she was appreciative to have anyone there, especially if it was (Y/N). She would always be so appreciative of all the things that they would do for her, even if it was small things such as buying her lunch during the breaks at work or giving her the answers during an important exam even if she just so happened to know them already. Yet, what she absolutely adored the most out of them, out of (Y/N), was that she was able to still be a person that felt negative emotions and had negative outbursts. If she happened to be having quite the bad day, seemingly never-ending tears streaking down her face, how she could scream and yell out profanities to the world. Despite all that (Y/N) would still be there. They would still be there to finally wipe the tears away, to reassure Rin that her feelings and actions were completely valid, and that eventually the storm would pass, and things would get better. She absolutely adored (Y/N) for that. Rin absolutely loved them for that. 

It happens to be the more likely chance that encountering Rin for the first time, more known as “The Spirit'' in this particular point, would be during a trial in the Entity’s realm. With this being said, no matter what the relationship might have been or what it might be, (Y/N) needs to understand that they’re going to end up getting hurt by Rin. Being blinded by the rage of having to relive those moments of what her father had done to her and her mother, (Y/N) is bound to most likely get hooked. With being hooked there’s that possibility of being able to momentarily subdue that rage, enough for Rin to realize what she’s done and create some distance for them to be unhooked by another survivor and possibly make it out of the Trial alive. Yet, there have been times where the worst of it has come upon (Y/N), having been Mori’d by Rin. Other survivors have stated to (Y/N) that after having been Mori’d by Rin, she had spent a moment clutching to (Y/N)’s lifeless body all while the only noise that could be heard was the guilty wailing of The Spirit. If there happens to be some downtime and you cross paths at the campfire, Rin will begin to apologize profusely for her actions, and while they both know that she genuinely means it, (Y/N) and Rin both know that there’s simply no way around it.

While practically any relationships, especially ones between the Killers and Survivors, are supposedly supposed to remain low-key or even as if they don’t exist, it’s quite the opposite between (Y/N) and Rin. It doesn’t matter whether the Trial had just started, and they happen to see each other from across the landscape, or if Rin happens to be chasing another survivor to bring them down, (Y/N) will always proceed to call out to her and wave, which makes Rin’s day just a bit better than before. Yet, the one person that she’s afraid for them to find out about her relationship with (Y/N) is The Oni. Yet, little does Rin know that he already knows about them and has already threatened to tear (Y/N) apart if they happen to hurt Rin in any way, shape, or form.

He could remove himself from anyone else's observation and flourish in his isolation. But he would not hide from Rin. That was one person he would never hide from.
