Chuck Hansen x Jaeger Pilot!Reader

A/N: I’m proud of this. Please don’t let it flop. Chuck Hansen and Pacific Rim fans rise! - Nemo

Warning(s): Character death. Kaiju’s. Angst

Summary: You were recruited as a Ranger to fight Kaiju’s - giant monsters from the sea. At your last stand, you join Chuck Hansen - a man you’ve had feelings for for years - to pilot Striker Eureka.

In the depths of the pacific ocean lies a portal. We call the portal the Breach. 

From that portal comes creatures from another world. We call them Kaijus. 

Millions were killed before the world banned together to make metal monsters of our own to fight back. We called them Jaegers. 

Due to the mental connection between the Jaeger and human, two had to pilot the Jaegers to share the mental load, meaning the two opened their thoughts and memories with each other. We call that drifting. 

In 2020 when I was Seventeen, a Jaeger by the name of Gipsy Danger was manned solo by a pilot called Raleigh Becket in Alaska after his other pilot - and brother Yancy - was killed. Raleigh has - so far - never stepped foot in a Jaeger again.

My sister - (s/n) (l/n) - and I pilot a Jaeger called Azurite Victory. Victory is unique, built especially for pilots like me and my sister. The only problem we had with her was exactly that; pilots like me and my sister, not for us. Out of all the Mark-4 Jaegers, she was a ‘special order’, built with speakers, and unique weapons. Her old pilots were Kye and Kade Sallow - twins from Australia - and they’d been killed during one of their first Kaiju attacks.

Even though the Victory was built for them, they weren’t built for the Victory. 

When my sister and I arrived at the Australian Shatterdome in 2021, the Azurite Victory had been rebuilt, and was sitting around waiting for it’s next set of pilots. Sharing a look, my sister and I knew that she was ours. She was our Jaeger, even if we hadn’t been given her yet. 

After a series of tests, the Victory was deemed ours. We were deployed for the first time a week later. Luckily, we survived. Mostly thanks to another Jaeger; Striker Eureka. 

Once we were docked, we met with the pilots; father and son duo Hercules and Chuck Hansen. 

Hercules - or Herc as he said to be called - was definitely the nicer of the two, he even gave us both pats on our shoulders for the job well done. Chuck wasn't so friendly. He didn't do so much more than send me a scowl before walking off with his dog in tow. 

Over time Chuck grew more friendly, but he was hardly nice yet. At least he didn't frown at us when we walked past. 

Then the Jaegers were said to be unnecessary - the governments had built walls around the coasts of the pacific to protect the people from the kaiju. Victory and her pilots were moved to Hong Kong, kept in the Shatterdome there until the Breach was sealed. Not a month passed before a kaiju attacked Sydney bay, crashing through the wall like it was butter. The only reason so many survived was because Striker and Hansen's stayed that little longer than us. 

It became pretty clear that we were still needed. But there was only four working jaegers; Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, Striker Eureka, and Azurite Victory. 

Gipsy Danger was being rebuilt, and after a talk with Pentecost I found out he was bringing Raleigh Becket back. How, I had no idea, but whatever the Marshall did, it worked. He had soon picked his drifting partner - Mako Mori. 

Raleigh and Mako had capability, that much was seen through the sparring they did, but when it came to drifting for the first time, all hell broke loose. Even with everyone evacuating or trying to turn Gipsy off, it didn't work fast. Not until Herc, Tendo and Chuck were able to power down the drifting. 

Apparently, Chuck wasn't very happy about what happened. Mostly about the almost dying part. He showed his displeasure in one of the worst ways possible. 

I don’t know why I did it, but I went to him after he thrashed Raleigh, and Raleigh thrashed him. I, in all my stupidity, went to help clean him up. When I went back to my dorm, (s/n) said it sounded like I was telling him off more than patching him up, all the while looking at me like I’d done something she was proud of. 

Considering she was in my head a lot, she knew what I really thought about Chuck. Sure, it was annoying, self-absorbed, and seemed to hate everyone, I still liked him. In the way that meant my heart and stomach turned uncomfortably heavy whenever he went out against a kaiju. 

What if he got hurt? 

What if the kaiju was too strong? 

What if the Victory couldn't get to Striker in time? 

What if he didn’t come back this time?

(s/n) said I was whipped. She was right.

Soon after the Gipsy almost destroyed the Shatterdome, a Kaiju attacked Hong Kong. Alpha and Typhoon were deployed to meet the kaiju and attack, while Striker was to stay back and make sure they didn’t get through. (s/n) and I were in the Shatterdome, waiting in Azurite Victory in case Alpha or Typhoon needed help. 

Raleigh and Mako weren’t supposed to be joining us. They’d only drifited once, and that didn’t end well. Pentecost didn’t want to risk it again, so they stayed with him in the control room with Tendo. 

Even with one Kaiju, it became pretty clear Victory was needed. We were sent out right away, placed in the water in front of Striker, and went straight to work to try and help the others. Despite Victory's light weight, and slim build, we didn’t make it in time. 

Crimson Typhoon and his three pilots were ripped apart between metal and kaiju flesh. 

While we were trying to help Alpha, another Kaiju emerged, jumping on their back. They obviously saw Alpha as more of a threat, aiming their forces at the Russian Jaeger until they couldn’t handle it anymore.

Cherno Alpha and it’s pilots were killed, crushed by the kaiju’s defenses and the water.

“(y/n),” (s/n) started, looking ahead to focus on the kaijus, “There’s two of them, and one of us.” 

“I know, I know. You know I know that.” I said, flexing the clawed fingers of Victory’s left hand. She was getting antsy, and making me like that too from our connection.

“One is leaving! Otachi, towards the city! We can’t go after them both.” she said, then addressed Pentecost. “We need Gipsy Danger. We can’t risk Striker getting destroyed too.” 

“That’s a negative Ranger, you know it’s risky.”

“Deploy Gipsy Danger! Now!” I shouted, grunting after as we moved to fend off Leatherback from going to the city too. 

“Striker engaging Otachi. Victory is free to pursue Leatherback.” Herc said over comms, disobeying Pentacost’s orders to stay where they were without hesitation. 

“Victory engaging Leatherback.” My sister and I said. Even when we weren’t drifting we had an uncanny ability to talk in unison, freaking out others with it was one of our favorite things to do. “Be careful Striker.” I added, (s/n) snickering beside me.

“Copy that, (y/n).” Chuck said, and Striker went off after Otachi. 

We moved fast, (s/n) deploying the bladed whip on Victory's right arm, enabling us to wrap it around the kaiju’s middle, as I extended the claws. It was supposed to be an easy kill. At the same time, Striker was preparing it’s missiles, and Leatherback emitted a wave of electricity, turning our Jaegers off completely. 

Not even our comms worked anymore. 

“(y/n), we need to get out of here.” (s/n) said after trying to reboot Victory, letting the straps of her harness go as she stepped free. I could hardly open my mouth to tell her to strap back in before Otachi came back around at us from the city, it’s tail came down on Victory’s head and neck, ripping the right side apart like a kid at it’s presents on Christmas. 

That’s all it took for my sister to get crushed, killed by the same creatures that took our friends and family. That’s all it took for me to be ripped from the Victory’s cockpit and into the crisp dark water below along with masses of Azurite Victory’s metal plating. 

I don't know how I survived the fall, but I did, and managed to stay conscious and above water until the Kaijus went far enough away for the rescue helicopters to get to both Hansen's and me.

I woke back in the Shatterdome. Sitting up from the stretcher they had me on I was hit with a mass of nausea and memories, so I lay back down. There was stinging from places on my face where my helmet broke, but apart from that, the cold water, and the fact that I lost my sister and Jaeger, I was okay. 

Okay enough. 

“(y/n)!” I sat up again, slower, to see Chuck reach me as I was settled to be looked at by medics near one of the bay doors with Herc. “Jesus, when that kaiju... I thought you’d died.” he said, standing close by. I could tell from the way he was acting he wanted to day more. To do more. But he wasn’t that kind of person. He didn’t do ‘feelings’. 

“Where’s (s/n).” I said, knowing the answer. I wondered if anyone would tell me. 

“Killed in action.” 

“Just like the Wei’s. Sasha and Aleksis. Yancy.” I started, wincing as a medic started patching up a cut near my eye. “We have two Jaegers. We’re losing time -”

“Don’t you start being pessimistic. That’s my job. You’re the nice one.” Chuck mumbled, looking from his father to me. “But, I mean, while we’re listing the bad, Striker only has one pillot now.” 

“No, I could- Ah!” Herc said, yelling out when the medic passively moved his hurt arm. “Mate, that doesn't bend like that.” 

“You’re not fit to pilot.” Herc’s medic said.

Herc wasn’t fit to pilot. Both the medics and Pentecost through that, along with pretty much everyone else. 

Pentecost offered to Pilot with Chuck, knowing he was either going to die in a Jaeger or stuck in a control room. Even I would’ve chosen to pilot a Jaeger instead, but he had Mako to look after. He had an army of people. He was the Marshall. He was needed in the Shatterdome.

So as Pentecost was on his way to suit up, I caught him. I explained, almost begged at one point, and somehow he said yes. 

The next time I saw him, he was talking to Chuck and a confused Herc. I stepped out of the bay door and went towards the small group. 

“Meet your co-pilot, Hansen.” Pentecost said, stepping aside to let me into the circle. Chuck’s mouth dropped open, then his face turned from one of shock to anger.

“Was there no one else! Why her? Why (y/n)?” he said, his hand clutching his helmet harder. 

“It’s not about whether there was no one else or not. (y/n) is the best option, and she’s willing to drift with you.” Pentecost explained,and Herc looked over at me with a slight smile. 

“Drifting with Chuck Hansen isn’t something for the light-hearted.” he said, gripping Ma’s leash much like Chuck did with his helmet. They were more similar than they thought. “I think I’ll owe you one for this.”

“If I come back.” I joked, pushing my own helmet closer to my chest. Maybe we were all similar.

“When you come back.” Herc said, nodding assurance at both Chuck and I.

“(s/n) and I were still drifting when she died.” I started, looking ahead, but I knew Chuck was looking at me now. “Like Raleigh with Yancy.” A moment silence passed with nothing but the clank of the elevator. “I thought I should warn you. Just in case.” 

Fingers wrapped around my own, warm and rough but comforting all the same. They were his, and I’d wanted to feel them in mine for so long. He’d know that. In less than a few minutes he’d know that. It was no use hiding it now.

I curled my fingers in his, stepping closer so our arms were flush together.

“We’ll be okay.” he said to me, stiffening, and then leaning over to press a kiss to my head. “We’ll be okay.” he repeated to himself more than me. 

We didn’t know each other well, but the connection was there. The bond was there. Where Herc and Chuck could drift because they were father and son, and where (s/n) and I could because we were sisters, Chuck and I could just because.

No words could describe it. We were made to drift together, and we hadn’t even drifted yet.

“Preparing for neural handshake, in fifteen.... Fourteen…” Tando started the countdown, and Chuck and I looked at each other. I smiled at him.

“You ready to read my mind Ranger.” 

“You should be worrying about mine,” Chuck started, mirroring my smile, “It gets pretty headstrong sometimes.” I laughed, taking a look at Chuck before closing my eyes and waiting to drift. 

“Neural Handshake engaging now.” 

What I thought, what I felt, made me speechless. Years of emotions, feelings, memories, and sights, all from Chuck’s point of view swept over me in an instant.

The times he wanted to hold me close, when he wanted to pull me onto him, when he wanted to celebrate successful missions with me. 

You always looked so happy, I wanted to be part of that, but no one wants me around. I’m cocky, arrogant, self-assured. We’re like Yin and Yang. But I can’t help but not care what others might think. I’ve needed you near me so many times I’ve lost count. 

The life he wants to live. 

We’ll go somewhere quiet. Live all on our own. Max might stay with Herc, but  if you want we could get another dog. We could have two. Or five. I’d cook for you. Or I’d learn how to cook for you. 

The things he wants to do. 

There’s this canyon in Northern Australia. You’d love it there. The sunsets are amazing. We could watch them together. If you want, I could probably handle going to some beaches. Just for you. 

The things he never said.

I love you. You’re perfect. Beautiful. Kind. Compassionate. Selfless. How can anyone not love you?

I wanted to stop it all, play it back, see it all clearer, but I couldn’t. 

From the look on Chuck’s face, he felt the same. He knew everything I did, and I never had to say a word. Our complete trust was in each other. We waited so long. Too long. 

“Neural handshake holding strong and steady at a hundred percent.” Tendo laughed, and suddenly hope wasn’t something so far fetched anymore.

If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?

I mean, according to season 2 he’s [redacted]... but you know... If they were to break up? TBH I would be so heartbroken and yet not surprised. Heartbroken because they are the only good couple in the show, and yet not surprised because all the other couples are horrible. 

Why is 1 so important?

OH MY GOSH! They are so good for each other, because they bring out the best in each other? You know? And like she calls him out on his shit (e.g. - “it’s not obedience Mr Beckett, it’s respect or when she told him how he’s a terrible pilot). But also they trust each others so deeply?! All of the heart eyes they have for each other? Dude... I could go on!

Which one has the strongest bond?

I would have to say Mako and Raleigh... because you know *makes kaiju punching motion* they’re drift compatible.

How many times have you read/watched 10′s fandom?

I watch it like once every few months. so a lot. 

Which ship has lasted the longest?

together? probably the smiths, haley and nathan, or lin truly and tai yu. as an otp of mine? probably the smiths or haley and nathan.

How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?

I mean, I don’t know... I can’t remember if they ever do.

If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive: 2 or 8?

So Gareon and Charlotte vs Warren and Layla... Interesting, because Gareon used to be in the War and Charlotte is really smart and thrifty and on the police force. Than you have Warren and Layla who have super-powers? However, I think what would hold them back is Layla’s principals and Gareon’s PTSD? So, like I dunno. They would probably both make it out, but they might not.

Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?

Kinda? Probably, at first from her mum... the show is a bit vague on the details.

Is 4 still together?

Yesh! THEY ARE SO CUTE!

If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?

Oh gosh, there are a lot of battle couples here. So I would have to say probably the Smiths, Ortega and Kovacs, or Swamy x Abby. The Smiths because they are trained assassins, Kovacs for the same reason and he wouldn’t want Ortega to be injured (though she may take some issue with him killing people), and Swampy and Abby because Swampy would literally do everything to save Abby and vice-versa.

Has anyone ever tried to sabotage 5?

Have you seen the movie? That’s literally the entire plot.

Do you spend hours a day going through 3′s tumblr tag?

I used to, but when my hyperfixation for swampy comes around again, you bet I will.

If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break forever or else she’d break them all up, which ship would you SINK?

Years after Pitfall and things seemed to have settled. The world was slowly repairing itself as the old Jaeger returned to action once more for the cleanup.

It might have been years since some of them have seen each other - but the found family that every Ranger scores in the Shatterdome seemed to remain strong - if this impromptu feast was anything to go by.

I made this video after reading @roguepythia’s emotional and very heartfelt response to having watched “Pacific Rim Uprising” for the first time, hoping to cheer her up a bit, by gently reminding her that no matter what people choose to take away from the original, or what they do with the characters, it can never take anything away from what was, and very much still is.

Yes, I will never quite forgive them for how they chose to “continue” the original characters’ stories, either. Mako, most of all, but also Newton.   He’s probably not the worst offense, all things considered, because there could eventually be a way out of it (assuming they make a 3rd one).  But I know a lot of neurodivergent people who strongly identified with him (while, as an adult with ADHD, oddly enough the one whose behavior reminded me the most of my own was Raleigh), and Guillermo Del Toro himself had told the actor that, since his character left such a profound emotional impact on the fandom, he was dropping the idea of what they finally went with (trying to avoid spoilers is so hard!  Lol!). Also, they removed any mention of Raleigh that could have given fans some sense of closure (especially in relation to Mako) in the very off-chance that a) there’s a 3rd one and b) Charlie Hunnam will still be interested / available. It almost felt like they included original characters from the first movie simply to ensure a sense of continuity, while not being interested in who they are, nor what they represented and symbolized in that universe, and for people in the fandom. Still, I remain confident that it won’t prevent people who deeply connected with Guillermo Del Toro’s original movie from fully enjoying, appreciating, and loving what, to me, will forever remain a masterpiece, and up until this day the greatest movie of all time! This fanvid is thus dedicated to those of you who fell in love with a young boy – his loss carved deep into his skin – who, when faced with the strength, resourcefulness, and potential of another human being, chose to value her goals and dreams, use his pain to help her overcome her own, and in doing so allowed her to help him heal and save himself.

A young girl with kaiju-stained hair, carrying her little red shoe in her hands – filled with the powerful drive to fight back against the monsters that tried to take her heart from her – who, when faced with someone who’d lost his own will to fight and believe in himself, allowed him to connect with her own, share her goals, become responsible for her (as the more experienced co-pilot), and readily accepted and valued his support and guidance, while accompanying each other on their respective and shared journeys.

 A young woman who – by being willing to rely on him the same way he used to rely on his big brother to guide him – ended up putting that young man in a position of having to make the conscious choice of sacrificing his own chances of survival to keep the one he’d chosen to become responsible for safe.  

Yancy didn’t die because Raleigh failed to save him.  And even if there had been time for him to decide which one of them would live or die, chances are that, had his little brother’s fate been in his hands, Yancy would still have chosen to keep Raleigh safe.

“Anyone can fall.” Bad things happen to good people. Life is unfair, and rarely is it about what one does or doesn’t deserve.

Things are simply what they are, you do the best you can do with the resources and the opportunities you have, ideally while trying to find some balance between your needs, skills, objectives, and those of the other people around you.

To me, this quote was at the very core of the message I took from the movie.  

Beyond Mako and Raleigh’s own stories, I also fell in love with all the parallels that could be drawn between Raleigh and Chuck, Mako and Chuck (who, in many ways, possessed many of both Raleigh and Mako’s character traits and issues, but was paired with a father that didn’t know how to properly help his son address and manage them), Herc and Stacker, Newton and Hermann, Raleigh and Newton, etc.

And yes, through it all, we were offered scenes that were splendidly filmed (I could watch the rain fall on Mako’s umbrella, just before she adjusts it to reveal herself to the audience for the first time while Stacker and Raleigh’s helicopter is landing all day!), treated to one of the most amazing movie theme and score I’ve ever heard…

Not to mention the absolute joy of watching those giant robots facing off with giant monsters! But those were the icing on the cake rather than the core of the movie to me. 

End of the day, it’s not the Jaegers that had me in awe, and turned “Pacific Rim” into my favorite movie of all time…  It was the Drift between co-pilots, and the way emotional empathy and trust between a group of people and misfits with various backgrounds, cultures, stories, traumas and issues was shown to be the most effective way for humanity to vanquish its monsters.

It was how the movie ended up with a “main lead” in a very strong supportive role, that merely contributes to the success of the mission by choosing to get involved with the skills and resources he has, rather than being the big hero of the story with something unique that couldn’t have been done by anyone else but him.

It was how the whole movie was presented as this great human mosaic with flawed and complex characters that people could easily related to – heroes of the story rather than hero of the story – in a world filled with heart and symbolism.

And sadly, after watching “Pacific Rim Uprising”, where suddenly a bunch of cadets are randomly thrown into Jaegers without us ever having been given a chance to learn more about them (ex: what motivated them to join the post-war efforts with the PPDC…  What connects them to their given co-pilot(s)?  How do they relate to each other?)…

I found myself echoing Hannibal Chau after the credits, and wondering: “Where is my goddamn (little red) shoe?”

I am now very much in the process of coming to terms with the fact that, what made me hopelessly fall in love with Guillermo Del Toro’s movie in the first place apparently wasn’t what the people that were ultimately put in charge of the sequel perceived as being the most important for it to succeed (and doing videos as a coping mechanism).

Is it to say “Pacific Rim Uprising” is a terrible movie?  Perhaps not.  Perhaps if it had been my first introduction to that universe, and I didn’t know any of the previous characters and the Drift, I would have enjoyed it the same way I enjoyed watching “Jason X”, or “Piranha 3D”!

But I made the mistake of falling in love with an Australian father and son duo, that have such trouble showing each other affection outside of the Drift that, all the love they can’t directly express each other, they express towards their dog.

It’s all those little details that made the first movie so fascinating and more and more exciting to watch with each renewed viewing! Sadly, I’m reasonably sure I wasn’t the type of audience the sequel had in mind. 

Hence why I can’t say that “Pacific Rim Uprising” is “bad” for what it aimed to be this time around.   Nor do I wish to imply that “Pacific Rim” can’t be enjoyed as mindless “big robots v.s. monsters” entertainment, too. 

Or, you know, anywhere in the spectrum between “dumb fun” and “deserves an Oscar”.

I don’t think there’s ever a right or wrong way to enjoy a movie. 

Just that the way I personally enjoyed this one didn’t seem to carry on in the sequel at all.

It is what it is. Anyone can fall.  Or rise, depending on what you like.

Yes, I am disappointed that I couldn’t find my little red shoe in the new installment.

But, on the plus side, it has inspired me to reconnect even more strongly with the original, revisit some of my writings, feelings, and thoughts about those characters, etc.

All things considered, I’m definitely good with that!

Two Heads Are Better Than One: Anime's Best Mecha Co-Pilots

Ah, mecha. There’s nothing quite like watching giant robots beat the not-so-living nuts and bolts out of each other, or protect the world from some kind of impending onslaught of giant monsters. It’s impossible not to be teetering on the edge of your seat when the pilot suits up and hops into the cockpit. Maybe your brand of mecha is more realistic, with the pilot following proper protocol to launch. Perhaps your favourite flavour of mecha is all in the showmanship, where all it takes to boot it up is passion and an over-the-top transformation sequence.

  In some cases, piloting a mecha takes more than a pilot’s instinct or skill. Hell, it even takes more than courage, heart, or even destiny. When piloting a mecha, sometimes two heads is better than one.

    Quite literally.

  DARLING in the FRANXX's Hiro & Zero Two

  The most recent pilots to join the ranks of dual-piloted mecha are Darling in the Franxx’s Hiro and Zero Two. In place of any sort of petrol or fuel, the Strelizia seems to run purely on their devotion to one another.

    Well, maybe not just devotion, but it certainly starts there. Since the Franxx need both a pistil and a stamen to function properly, their love for each other only serves as a positive force against the Klaxosaur, and later VIRM. Despite warnings from every which way, Hiro and Zero Two revel in the fact that their union will bring about the change the world needs.

  With the show soon coming to a close, the bond between Hiro and Zero Two will either prove to be a catalyst in rejuvenating the world, or quite possibly the opposite. Only time will tell.

  Eureka Seven's Renton & Eureka

  Renton and Eureka might just be one of the most well-known of all dual-piloted mecha. After crashing at Renton’s granddad’s garage, Renton fell head over heels for her, even going as far as to risk his life to give her the Amita Drive.

    While his confession of love was completely foreign to her, she at least found it impossible not to note his bravery. She also found herself particularly impressed by his skill in co-piloting the Nirvash as if it just came naturally. She felt like she really found the right partner for the Nirvash.

  Eventually some jealousy over who their Nirvash preferred led Eureka to distrust and pull away from Renton. Though she soon enough finds that she misses him greatly - as does the Nirvash - and the two reconcile and confess their feelings. From there, the two fight their way against anything that gets in the Gekkostate’s way.

  Gurren Lagann's Simon & Kamina

  Sometimes, piloting a mecha requires going beyond the impossible and kicking reason to the curb. While the titular Gurren Lagann was initially two smaller Gunmen, it wasn’t until their fight with Viral that Kamina came to the conclusion that the key to victory wasn’t power or strategy. It's not even manly spirit, confidence or brotherhood. It was two heads. 

    Without hesitation, Kamina jams the Lagann into the Gurren - to initially hilarious results. However, the mass of spiral energy between these two brothers brought the two stolen mecha together to form one Beastman ass-kicking machine.

  After a certain even that some of us like to pretend never happened, Simon piloted the Gurren Lagann with a number of other characters, such as Rossiu, Yoko, and even their arch-nemesis Viral to defeat the Anti-Spiral’s Granzeboma. Suffice to say, if any anime could prove two heads are better than one, it’s it’s Gurren Lagann.

  Marriage of God & Soul Godannar!!’s Goh & Anna

  Questionable age difference aside, Goh and Anna’s relationship is one plagued by alien invasions. They initially met while battling the Mimesis, and had their wedding completely ruined when the Mimesis came to strike again. Fortunately, Anna’s wifely devotion lead her to find the Neo-Okusaer - a top secret robot she uses to save her beloved.

      Fortunately, the “two become one” allegory of marriage seems to extend to fighting aliens with giant robots. Anna merges her Neo-Okusaer with Goh’s Dannar, activating it’s Twin Drive to form the mighty Godannar!

  Despite the gratuitous fanservice, Goh never seems to have eyes for anyone but Anna. I guess the key to a good marriage (or good mecha) isn’t attraction. It’s gattai.

  Groizer X’s Joe & Rita

  The concept of dual-piloted mecha dates as far back as the 1970s with Groizer X. This old school mecha anime follows Joe and Rita as they pilot the titular Groizer X in an effort to fight off the Gaira invasion.

    After Dr. Yan was captured by the Gaira, who bided their time in the Arctic before enacting their invasion, he created Groizer X, and entrusted it to his daughter Rita. When Groizer X escapes the grasp of the Gaira, it makes a beeline for Japan, where Rita meets Joe. Without hesitation, Joe agrees to help her fight off the Gaira, and the two become an unstoppable force.

  Groizer X was created by Go Nagai, and received a 36-episode anime despite Nagai being busy with Mazinger. Brazilian anime fans might be familiar with Groizer X under the name O Pirata do Espaço, while Latin American fanatics might know it as El Justiciero.

  Gunbuster’s Noriko & Kazumi

  You can always count on Gainax for their ability to gather around the meeting room and say “you know what this mecha anime needs? Mecha that combine with other mecha!” This 1980s fan favourite paved the way for over the top mecha badassery we’ve come to love and expect from them.

    Gunbuster follows Noriko’s journey to follow in her father’s footsteps to become a space pilot. She’s eventually handpicked as someone with the potential for greatness, and must prove to everyone that she can be the pilot she yearns to be even if she’s just an ordinary girl. Along the way, she meets Kazumi, an upperclassman with whom she becomes enamoured with. Fortunately, Kazumi is one of many who believes in Noriko, which aides in their fight against the space monsters.

  Fun bit of trivia: Gunbuster was Evangelion auteur Hideaki Anno’s directorial debut. You can certainly see some of his directorial flair in it.

BONUS: Pacific Rim’s Raleigh & Mako

    You go ahead and tell me Pacific Rim isn't just a real life anime. Go ahead. I'll wait. This 2013 Guillermo del Toro picture featured a number of nods to various Japanese media such as anime, mecha, and kaiju films. There's no better director that could pay homage to these genres than del Toro. The man himself has some of the greatest taste in anime and manga, recently showing off his own collection, much of which included manga from the likes of Junji Ito and Osamu Tezuka. 

  Pacific Rim takes us through a world ravaged by Kaiju, the likes of which are fought off by Earth's last hope: the Jaegers. The Jaegers require two pilots, joined through a mental link known as a drift. The stronger the sync between the two pilots, the better chance humanity has at saving the world.

  While Raleigh and Mako's first drift in their Gypsy Danger saw the destruction of the Shatterdome, they eventually rose to becoming the last ditch effort humanity could depend on.

I’ve always been super curious about this and I’ve never seen you post anything related to the topic and I know it’s a intense topic, but what’s your opinion on Reylo?

Oh man… 

Tbh I have posted about this before just not as much as I used to. And I know some of my followers are Reyl0 shippers and I have nothing against them whatsoever. Ship and let ship and all that. 

But I do have a couple things to say about it. I’ve been apart of a lot of fandoms and time and time again when there is a POC love interest, fandom will almost always ship the white main character with another white character over the POC and use really racist-coded language to defend their ship. 

Examples: Barry x Iris in The Flash, Glenn x Maggie in The Walking Dead, Raleigh x Mako in Pacific Rim, Doctor x Martha in Doctor Who, Spock x Uhura in Star Trek… literally could go on and on. 

And so when The Force Awakens came out and fandom was scrambling to ship Kyl0 with Rey, needless to say most POCs were skeptical as fuck, especially because they would use arguments to undermine Finn’s character and heroic arc to prop up Kyl0. 

And I know this firsthand because I used to handle a Finn x Rey sideblog created literally a day after the film came out so I was there on the frontlines from Day 1. And it was a shit storm. 

I was constantly harassed by Reyl0 stans calling Finn a misogynist or weak and inferior. They infantalised him and said that’s why he couldn’t be with Rey. There was so much racism and harassment and cross-tagging I had to just delete my blog for my sanity. But it was bad. Super bad. 

That’s one of the reasons Reyl0 is my NOTP. 

Another reason is, due to the cross-tagging, I was subject to a lot of their metas and basically all of it reduced Rey to some love interest prop whose design was to help Kyl0′s redemption. She was reduced to a tool for their ship  and there was no real agency. They ignored the fact that Kyl0 invaded her mind without her consent, murdered as close to a father figure as she had and tried to murder her first and only friend. It was… well, gross.

Look, I know not all Reyl0 shippers are racist or have racist beliefs or any of that sort. There are bad eggs in all fandoms, but when POCs are constantly being stepped on, it gets unbelievably infuriating. And when that’s an issue in a fandom, it’s usually exponentially more toxic than any others. That’s my experience anyways.

What are you looking forward to in 2018? For moviegoers, the much-talked-about upcoming movies are likely the answer. As the new year is just around the corner, AceShowbiz has compiled a list of movies that should not be missed, with the genres ranging from horror to romance, from comedy to action, and from musical to superhero.

The list of Most Anticipated Movies of 2018 is divided into two parts, with the first part dealing with sequels. “” and “” are set to follow the success of the predecessors, while the likes of “” and “” took a long time to come.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

While “” helps bring characters of color into the MCU, “” will be the first Marvel film to have a female character taking the center stage. Already an integrap part of 2015’s “”, Hope van Dyne, played by , is stepping into the Wasp suit in the upcoming film, with reprising his role as the “deadliest” superhero. The two have to team up to rescue Hope’s mom from the quantum realm. By working together, their personal and professional relationships are bound to get tangled. Bringing back as Hope’s father Hank Pym, the movie adds as the original Wasp, and as Bill Foster a.k.a. Black Goliath, the second Giant-Man, to the already impressive cast.

Avengers: Infinity War

The new “Avengers” film is going to get more crowded, literally, as there are more than sixty characters that will appear in the film, but fans are looking forward to the friendly banters between these superheroes. Unlike the first two films which mainly featured the same members, the team will reportedly undergo a major shake-up in “”. Having been torn apart following the events of “”, they have to join forces with the in order to stop Thanos () from collecting all Infinity Stones for a gauntlet that will allow him to bend reality to his will. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Gellert Grindelwald’s plans to create a wizarding hierarchy to dominate all non-magical beings and to the magical community caused chaos in “”. Still being the main villain in the sequel “”, Grindelwald () has escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore () enlists the help of his former student Newt Scamander (), who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Those curious about Dumbledore’s love relationships may find the answer here as the movie is said to explore more of his personal life and depict him as an openly gay character, true to the canon written by author J.K. Rowling.

Fifty Shades Freed

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

After 2016’s sketchy “”, the long-running mutant film franchise is trying to get back on track with a 1990s-set installment where mega-telepath Jean Grey () goes full Phoenix. The original “Dark Phoenix” saga crossed much of the Marvel universe before venturing into outer space, but director Simon Kinberg has stated that this version of the Phoenix story will be more grounded. While most of the female members of the X-Men haven’t always had the biggest storylines in the movies, that’s about to change in “Dark Phoenix”, as it will put the women, especially Turner’s Jean Grey and ‘s mysterious alien character, front and center.
