Digital Development. - Book Cover Project

I have initiated my book cover design on Illustrator to draw my cover. Using images from Unsplash I traced illustrations of seagulls as quickly as possible to give a roughness and simplicity to the design; the same method that Quentin Blake used for the original Roald Dahl book covers. Moreover, my chosen illustration style will be simple and contemporary for the mean time before my tutorial because I don’t want to spend too much time drawing a digital cover as a “rough idea” and to be told to consider a new idea. Adding to that, I want the seagulls to look as natural as possible. So I used an image that consists of a flock of seagulls to make them look natural rather than giving them a distinct look because in the story they don’t talk or interact with the characters; only when they carry the giant peach. Having the seagulls as the primary focus of the cover also touches on the nature aspect of the story. 

After I had drawn the seagulls, I wanted to find the right peach colour for the title. Firstly I turned the text into a gradient, but then I decided to use a solid colour instead because when I tried the gradient tool, a black outline would appear. It’s been difficult to find the right shade of peach for the title because I want it to contrast with the colour of the background. Additionally, it’s a matter of balancing the pink, orange, and red together to create a bright peach colour.
