Do you have a favourite pun and/or wordplay?

I never paid much attention to puns before I met Ryunosuke. While I often find them tiresome, I can appreciate how his mind makes those quick connections.

As for a favourite... This isn't a pun in English, but in Japanese, なるほど (pronounced "naruhodo") is a way of saying "I see," or, "That's right."

It was amusing when Ryunosuke and I were in a room full of people and he would think he heard his name. Or sometimes when we had one of our debates, I would respond to his argument with, "Naruhodo......san, you are completely wrong about this," and watch him slump over in defeat.

If it was within your power, would you save someone you detest from an injustice? Let's say a corrupt noble faced charges for a crime committed by someone else. What would you do?

A question posed in my final year of university, and my answer remains unchanged: that isn't my responsibility as a prosecutor. That is the responsibility of the judge and jury.

The prosecution's job is to say, "The defendant committed this crime. Here is how we know they did it." The defense then says, "No, they didn't. Here is how your evidence is wrong. Here is what I think happened, and here is my evidence to prove it." The prosecution then says, "This is how your evidence actually proves the defendant did it." They go back and forth until a conclusion is reached.

The judge and jury listen to all of this, and they are the ones who decide which side makes a more compelling argument. Their decision in the matter is the verdict, and should either the defense or prosecution disagree with the verdict, they may attempt to appeal.

There will sometimes be a case where a defendant clearly didn't do it, but the prosecution will opt to pursue the case further regardless. Generally, it will be to pursue details that may lead to the actual culprit. In a case like the one you posit, where a person guilty of a different crime they cannot be charged for stands as defendant for a charge they are innocent of, occasionally it has merit to pursue the case solely to sway the jury.

Jury overrule does not happen often, and for good reason, but can at times lead to precedent that does not quite place new laws on the books, but allows for reinterpretation of other laws. If a jury demands you be tried for a crime, demands you be punished for said crime, and the judge agrees? You can be punished, even if the crime you committed isn't technically a crime.

Some crimes are defined very loosely and vaguely within the law for this very purpose. Criminal mischief comes to mind, as does intent to harm. Occasionally, the prosecution finds itself in a position where they cannot charge the defendant of the initial crime, but can dangle a much more grievous sin in front of a jury and hope they take the bait.

It can appear a bit underhanded, this is true. Equally so, sometimes the jury will take bait that the prosecution hadn't realized was there. Juries, like mobs, are fickle things that must be handled carefully. Judges tend to be more cautious as a whole.

I believe it was actually Defense Attorney Naruhodo that demonstrated this well, using both the jury in his summation examinations as well as the public gallery on multiple occasions in pursuit of the truth. He's never cared for the destruction left in his wake, so long as he can properly settle the score. I admire that deeply about him.

I can assure you, Mr. Naruhodo, that he is being punished for his crimes. If nothing else, I may offer you that small comfort.

Stronghart did many things wrong. He is the gold standard of What Not To Do. In your professional opinion as the man who took him down, what was the one thing he did that crossed the line? Where it didn't matter what he did after that, you were going to stop him?

This one is both easy and hard to answer. I have to thank the man for believing in me enough to let me start my career, I studied and wrote essay after essay for him in those six months of being alone. Despite every negative thought I had of him, he wasn't outwardly hostile towards me. I knew he had to be stopped when I found out about what he put my friends through. Mr. Asogi, the poor man, lost his life and credibility because of that bastard. He ruined Judge Jigoku's life by making him shoot the poor man, he ruined Lord Klint's life by forcing him to assume the role of The Professor, and then he had the absolute audacity to act as if he was doing the right thing. I would never defend him, nor recommend him any sort of lawyer because he would just be a stain on their morals.
