ok portrait of a father also drives me crazy narratively because bsd has a lot of themes of like overcoming your past, personal growth & finding strength from within, finding a reason to live, that kind of thing. which this chapter does touch on but in such a strange way.

i think honestly something that comes up a few times is that old people like the headmaster had it really tough & horrible during the great war so they expect the next generation to also deal with that hardship, but the war is over. and it makes perfect sense that the headmaster believes he did all that to (a) make atsushi hate the headmaster instead of himself and (b) make atsushi able to overcome hardship. and from a view of physical suffering point b is absolutely true but mentally emotionally psychologically it can absolutely be argued & there is SO MUCH evidence that the headmasters treatment of atsushi affected him SO badly. he has ptsd he has so many scars literal & emotional. he feels paralyzed and helpless when he's alone against an enemy because it feels like hes alone again in the orphanage. so the headmasters view of "torture him to make him stronger" makes sense personally for him to do BUT i dont believe it fits in the themes bsd actually wants to tell.

Dazai comparing him to a father figure for atsushi does fit with the headmaster's good intentions. and akutagawa when he shows up on the boat says "when that weretiger is backed into a corner or defeated, he will come back as a much more troublesome foe" which also supports that. But this overcoming suffering through strength of will stuff is not what bsd is about. its about trusting allies to have your back and fight alongside you . like dazai said, the reason fyodor "lost" the race out of meursault was because he didn't have one thing: allies. he only has pawns; nikolai is the only person who truly cares about him and thats. well. nikolai. and in the fight on the boat, atsushi and akutagawa only lost because they didn't trust in each other fully. mostly atsushi actually. fukuchi even SAID that if atsushi had trusted akutagawa to have his back with Rashomon from the start, they could have killed him and won. so the most important thing is not personal strength but having allies & trusting other people to support you because for atsushi, the worst thing is being alone.

anyway this chapter acknowledges that the headmaster had good intentions but that doesnt necessarily mean that everyone else would agree with them. and dazai even says atsushi doesnt have to forgive him. so they WEREN'T actually the best methods for making atsushi better But they were done out of like love and care . and thats the important part & what this chapter is about (evidence: the ending where atsushi cries)

Watch as a person with no fashion sense attempts to design outfits for a TGAA modern AU. For Ryuu I was thinking comfy and simple, Susato elegant yet mostly practical, Kazuma cool yet smart looking and definitely practical (I tried multiple things with that)

The hc that Judge Jigoku is Ryunosuke’s father is so unfounded but makes everything hilariously messy, maybe they don’t know so the first time they meet is literally when Ryunosuke is being tried for murder.

By the end of tgaa2 Ryu would have to go up to Kazuma and say smth like ‘sorry my dad killed your dad can we still be partners?’ Like that’s so funny.

The proof of the whole theory is just:

-fuckass hairline

-concept art Ryunosuke has a similar little ponytail deal going on

-Jigoku has those Phoenix Wright coded eyebrows

-can fit in a traveling trunk

-thematically so fucked up of an idea that it’s worth exploring a little

-same vibe as Phoenix being related to Furio Tigre (interesting but also Scary)

Ayaki Fam rise up...? :D.

For the hell of it, I gave the Spider fam names. (This is primarily under the context of a swap AU {between the KNY corps and the Demons}, of which I adore despite not usually thinking highly of AUs).

The Father? I dub him Ryunosuke Ayaki.

The Mother? I dub her Mizuki Ayaki (nicknamed "Joroko" for her tiny stature and sexy figure, don't let Ryu catch you calling her that tho.)

The Older Brother? I dub him Setsuji Ayaki.

The Sister? I dub her Akemi Ayaki.

the constant stream of vague restrictions of information towards Ryunosuke is so annoying but it makes me feel better to think that's how everyone else keeps him enriched bc if there is a secret being kept he will dig it out of its grave. The best thing you can do to keep your reasonably depressed defense attorney entertained is to string him along for a good mystery (or just let him correct your faulty logic, he likes to dance around and do that too.)

I don't know why they rewrote the part where Nagisa shows off his chest to have Ryunosuke check. Maybe they just liked the joke of Nagisa squealing in embarrassment? "Queer" in the VIZ translation was probably a slur in Japanese which was pretty common in writing of this era ("okama"). But all that and Nagisa's father's stance on the matter got removed to avoid any trouble. Unrelated, they had Lum and Shinobu bring up that Ataru and Mendo didn't hit on Nagisa first, which is interesting as in the manga, it was just the boys reacting to each other at first. The final scene was rewritten to have an extra gag regarding the sea urchin shaved ice, presumably because it is a bit more interesting than Nagisa still chasing down Ryunosuke. I do like that Ryunosuke is still grilling corn and waving it around threateningly, even if she doesn't throw it. Oh and Lum kept her shirt on while sunbathing, she's gonna get an uneven tan. And Ataru doesn't get to snorkel.

All in all, this half was alright. It is hard to beat the OVA's visuals, but I will say it did have some pretty bad drawings. I don't mind the goofy off-model stuff for a gag, but some of these are clearly just a bit rushed.

Just like Principal Kuno was the worst thing to ever happen to Ranma 1/2, Ryunosuke's father was the worst thing to happen to Urusei Yatsura and I am not happy to see him in the remake.
