[Movie Review] Kingdom (Japan, 2019)
8/10
Another Yamazaki Kento movie. Thankfully, not a Shoujo manga adaptation. That was basically why I decided to check it out - to see Yamazaki in a different movie genre.
Yamazaki Kento seemed like he was inherently Shin. The way he acted arrogant and headstrong, along with being clueless and stupid, was very good for me. His body and his moves were a good thing to see, too. Him not having to deal with romance in this movie was refreshing.
Yoshizawa Ryo was a relatively new face to me. There has always been that x factor for me when an actor can play two different characters distinctly. Yoshizawa was able to do that here. I think this was his second movie I watched (after Bleach) and I'm glad to have discovered him.
These two actors shone brightly among the others but everything worked together seamlessly, in my opinion.
There were just two things that bothered me. One, General Ouki's arms were too thin for me. If he had been waving that huge spear since forever, I think those arms should've been bigger than that? I've never seen the manga so I don't know if the character was designed that way. Second, while watching, I had the notion that they were aiming for a second movie, but apparently they weren't? All that talk of Eisei wanting to unify China and General Ouki telling Shin they'd be seeing each other in battle... what were those for then?
I would love to see a sequel.
(It is kinda sad that it is overshadowed by a series of the same name. Though I am also a fan of that.)

一I heard that you have already been reading the original before the cast was decided.
I started reading it five years ago.
一What is your impression of the original?
At first, I knew it because it's so popular and when I started reading it, it was so fired up and I cried. It was so much entertainment that I got hooked at once.
一What did you think when you were going to make an appearance in your favorite live-action movie?
I was happy, but I thought, how the heck do I do? What is it? It was hard for me to imagine what it would be like to call tens of thousands of extras in a battle scene. At first, I couldn't imagine.
一How was it when you actually started the shooting?
The staff, the cast, and everyone who involved in the movie was very passionate. When Osawa Takao (Army Commander Cavalry) who trained to build the body came to the scene I was trembling, this is a heat of Kingdom! I was so happy being able to see it. The actual finished work was insanely interesting, and I thought it wouldn't be something I was worried about (laughs).
一I heard that you have a good relationship with Yamazaki Kento, but did your relationship have an impact on your acting?
This was the 4th time we have performed together, so I think we both know how each other will behave, and because of that kind of relationship, we became Shin and Eisei.
一Did it affects your relationship in reality?
I usually only talk about trivial things with him (laughs), but since I've played in Kingdom, I've had more opportunities to talk to him seriously. I was thinking, I have to make it interesting. Of course, I need to behave like an adult. I think it's also because I was raised up, it's a feeling that I was pulled by the amount of heat of the work.
一You played two roles, Hyou and Eisei, but how could you have played two roles that are quite unique?
I played Hyou and he was easy to understand, humanist and charming, but ... I always thought about how I could express the overwhelming aura that comes out from Eisei, not to mention the expression that doesn't show weakness, the really hot sprits, the human-smelling part, and the standing figure and the way of speaking.
一Was there a moment when your plan was well hooked?
There was also a moment when Eisei was pulled by Shin's spirits and there was a scene where I bumped my dream against Ouki. I think there was something that was born by the tension that I have to convince Ouki. I feel like I've been through these moments many times and I've gotten to grips with Eisei after those many moments.
一It's hard to be a King.
There was also a moment when I was afraid of standing in front of a camera that I had never felt before, with the pressure of having to be among these amazing actors. But I have to stand up and hold up. I thought this was a sense of responsibility and tension in my hands. Through this work, I might have got the guts (laughs).
一What was the most difficult scene?
The scene where Eisei and Hyou are facing each other. There was a scene I played Hyou and it came back to Eisei shortly after that and I had to change my expressions. Even the two people who looked exactly the same, including the costume, they were one person. I think that the heat was coming out on the scene where it was Hara sensei's original lines had completely entered each other's role.
一The scene where Hyou was going to die, it touched me so much, it was shaking with no difference from the original. Also one of the highlights of this work is the action scene.
The action was terrible. I was practicing at a pace of 2-3 a week for about two months, but it's changed rapidly in the field. Fortunately, there are lots of action movies that have been continuing so far, so I think it looks so alive. However, during the 1-cut long turn, I ran and killed people repeatedly with dozens of taking. I was about to collapse because of the lack of oxygen (laughs).
一Were you aware of the difference between Eisei and Hyou's action?
Since I've been practicing, I think there was an act of barbarism in the form, I stooped when I was as Hyou, on the other hand, as Eisei I was learning the swordsmanship of the royal family, so I was very worried about the difference in facial expressions and the way of the living.
一What are the most memorable lines?
The most memorable line was the line during the battle. Everyone said, “Don't give up on your will to fight”. It's a speech line to fire up. I heard that the scene was very important in the Kingdom because Hara sensei was also told so. It was a scene that I myself trembled by reading the original, so I had to decide this thing coolly. There was a consciousness. I had to make a voice that I should shout it loud but also it should be delivered properly, and I thought even if Eisei was exhausted, and Eisai's voice is too beautiful, I wanted to perform it realistically.
一It's about the important line in the story that Hara sensei was cherished it very much, and it seems he's imagining your voices in his head while drawing Eisei in the original work. Now, Yoshizawa-san's voice is Eisai's voice.
Is it true?! It's insanely nice. My voice died in one shot, but I'm glad I did my best.
一You mentioned earlier that Hara sensei came to the scene. Are there any of his words that you think affected and impressed you?
Of course, his words were so impressive, and by chance when we met with him at a Chinese food stall, he asked Kento, “I want the scene where Hyou dies turned hot, that's an important scene” he said, I was listening to it and I thought, “I have to die properly” (laughs). In fact, the shooting of that scene was very intense. I was shooting from around 9 o'clock in the evening to around 3 o'clock in the morning, but with Kento, we conscious of thinking that the shooting order was not significant all the time.
一Please give a word to YJ readers who are looking forward to the live-action movie.
As a fan, I honestly thought this film was interesting, so I think that you can watch it with any confidence and you will enjoy it. I was so happy I challenged the scene with such a spirit I had. Because it's work that the staff and the actors also challenged their whole bodies and souls. I would like you to see it at the theater!

To the packed crowds at the stage greeting event held at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater in Tokyo on Sunday, it was reported that the live-action film adaptation of Yasuhisa Hara's historical adventure manga Kingdom had already sold one million tickets and earned 1.4 billion yen just in nine days since its release in Japan on April 19.
The Shinsuke Sato (I Am A Hero, Bleach)-directed adaptation opened in 341 theaters across Japan and ranked second in its opening weekend box office with a huge 526 million yen, then made a 690 million yen from its first Friday through Sunday.
Even though he is still 24, Kento Yamazaki, who is cast as the film's protagonist Shin / Li Xin, is a veteran of live-action film adaptations of popular Japanese manga, such as Kyo, Koi wo Hajimemasu (2012), L DK (2014), Heroine Shikkaku (2015), Orange (2015), Wolf Girl and Black Prince

Unbreakable Chapter I (2017), Psychic Kusuo: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (2017), and the upcoming
Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku (2019). Kingdom is expected to become one of the most successful films
in his acting career.
Yamazaki said at the event, "The cast and staff created the film with great heat and passion, so I am
delighted to know a craze for the film has been been spreading. It has become a very special film for me.
I hope the heat will grow more from now on. Thank you so much today."

There was also a moment when Eisei was pulled by Shin’s spirits and and there was a scene where I bumped my dream against Ouki. I think there was something that was born by the tension that I have to convince Ouki. I feel like I’ve been through these moments many times and I’ve gotten to grips with Eisei after those many moments.
一It’s hard to be a King.
I think that the heat was coming out on the scene where it was Hara sensei’s original lines had completely entered each other’s role.
一The scene where Hyou was going to die, it touched me so much, it was shaking with no difference from the original. Also one of the highlights of this work is the action scene.
The action was terrible. I was practicing at a pace of 2-3/week for about two months, but it’s changed rapidly in the field. Fortunately, there are lots of action movies that have been continuing so far, so I think it looks so alive. However, during the 1-cut long turn, I ran and killed repeatedly with dozens of take. I was about to collapse because of the lack of oxygen (laughs).
一Were you aware of the difference between Eisei and Hyou’s action?
Since I’ve been practicing, I think there was an act of barbarism in the form, I stooped when I was as Hyou, on the other hand, as Eisei I was learning the swordsmanship of the royal family, so I was very worried about the difference in facial expressions and the way of the living.
一What are the most memorable lines?
The most memorable line was the line during the battle. Everyone said, “Don’t give up on your will to fight”. It’s a speech line to fire up. I heard that the scene was very important in the Kingdom because Hara sensei was also told so. It was a scene that I myself trembled by reading the original, so I had to decide this thing coolly. There was a consciousness. I had to make a voice that I should shout it loud but also it should be delivered properly, and I thought even if Eisei was exhausted, and Eisei’s voice is too beautiful, I wanted to perform it realistically.
一It’s about the important line in the story that Hara sensei was cherished it very much, and it seems he’s imagining the voice of you in his head while drawing Eisei in the original work. Now, Yoshizawa-san’s voice is Eisei’s voice.
Is it true?! It’s insanely nice. My voice died in one shot, but I’m glad I did my best.
一You mentioned earlier that Hara sensei came to the scene. Are there any of his words that you think affected and impressed you?
Of course his words were so impressive, and by chance when we met with him at a Chinese food stall, he asked Kento, “I want the scene where Hyou dies turned hot, that’s an important scene” he said, I was listening to it and I thought, “I have to die properly ”(laughs). In fact, the shooting of that scene was very intense. I was shooting from around 9 o'clock in the evening to around 3 o'clock in the morning, but I was crying with Kento all the time. I was conscious of thinking that the shooting order was not significant.
一Please give a word to YJ readers who are looking forward to the live-action movie.
As a fan, I honestly thought this film was interesting, so I think that you can watch it with any confidence and you will enjoy it. I was so happy I challenged the scene with such a spirit I had. Because it’s work that the staff and the actors also challenged their whole bodies and souls. I would like you to see it at the theater!
