Let's spread some love 😘. What are some of your top five favourite cs fics?

Five?! I guess I can give you five.. (plus a few extras..) I pick the ones I reread the most as my "top five favorites", which is the best way I know how to narrow this down, but I'm not convinced I have a favorite or a top 5. There are far too many good reads in the CS community!

I couldn't find everyone on tumblr, so PLEASE let me know their tumblr tags if you know them! Such amazing writers, the lot!

1. Unbreakable - xHookenonKillianx

I reread the epilogue, just by itself, quite frequently. It's so beautiful. As soon as I forget the meaning of certain details in it, I reread this fic, which usually amounts to once a year.

2. The Legend of Captain Killian Jones - hollyeleigh @hollyethecurious

Ooph I love when someone manages to bring pirate-from-the-18th-century Killian to a modern AU. I just love how all the details add up and how they fall in love and how Henry is as much a part of the story as CS. I reread this every October. (often once again when winter appears over, too)

3. Alone, until I get home - phthalo @peglegjones

I think I need to reread this [again] to give it accurate praise, because my memory SUCKS, but Henry and Ian's dynamic is one aspect I remember well, and appreciate. It's so hard to write kids and keep them relevant in a story and she does this sooo well. And the little bits of magick.. that made my heart swell. I don't wanna spoil anything..

4. How you remind me - cosette141 @cosette141

Any fic that can do it better than canon deserves praise. This is canon divergence from Killian showing up in New York, and the whole thing is my new head canon for the show.

5. Second star to the right - only_halfway_there

This was different than most CS fics, and I suspect it's because this was written before we got a lot of CS in the show? But that just means this author used her creativity, making a different Neverland, a different version of Hook, and the whole thing is so unique and beautiful.

This one is incomplete, hence it's spot here at #6, but I'll never give up on it being completed one day. A ton of people from the past show up in the present all at once, including one Pirate Captain Killian Jones. (Again.. pirate-from-the-18th-century Killian in a modern AU..)

omg!! this is right up my alley!!! i haven’t read that one yet, but it’s been on my list for a while! i was hoping to get to it last year around halloween but i never did!! i’ve been eyeing it at the bookstore so i’ll definitely pick it up next time im there 😌 im trying to accumulate a vampire books collection HAHAH

omg fallon!! i’m so dumb i mean to respond to ur reply but i would love some podcasts recs!! i like listening to scary stories ones (like personal anecdotes / folklore etc) and true crime ! or any just good nonfiction ones! i will say i can’t really get into the ones that are fictional >< ik a lot of people recommend some of the fictional horror ones, which is what i always stumble upon when looking for ghost stories… and then i get bummed they’re not real HHAHA. but if you have any suggestions i’m always open :)

AHAHA no it's ok!!! also i do want to say i saw this like right after you sent it but if this answer isn't up right away it's bc i went overboard with the recs whoops. but i have a friend from college who used to refer to me as "the podcast queen" and also i'm never chill about anything ever so. prepare yourself.

i'm gonna separate these into true crime & not, just for your ease of picking something! i'm also including the app(s) i use to listen to them. these are in no particular order btw

True Crime

Serial - this is probably one that you've heard of/had recommended to you before, but if so there's good reason. i've listened to season one, about adnan sayed, at least a dozen times. i skipped season 2 (about bowe bergdahl), and season 3 (about the justice system of a city in ohio, i believe it's cincinnati?) was lower stakes but still interesting. season 4, about guantanamo bay, is also really good so far. on spotify.

Cold - three seasons, each about a different case of different utah women who went missing and whose body has never been found. i've listened to season 1, about susan powell, probably 6-7 times. i never finished season two, about joyce yost, but as i'm typing this i'm listening to the season 3 finale, about sheree warren. seasons 2 & 3 include descriptions of sexual assaults in varying levels of detail, but the whole show is worth a listen. i love the journalist who narrates it. on amazon music & spotify (s1 & 3)

Beyond All Repair - about sophia johnson, who was accused & convicted of murdering her mother in law when she was 6 months pregnant, pretty much solely on the word of her brother. i won't say anything else so i don't spoil it, but it's a case i never would have heard of without this podcast. on spotify.

Dr. Death - about a spinal surgeon that really should not have been allowed to operate on people. i haven't listened to season two (about a different doctor), but season one is NUTS. another one i've listened to multiple times. on spotify.

Your Own Backyard - about the disappearance of Kristin Smart. the host was born & raised in the same area Kristin was from, and it bothered him that her disappearance was never solved. the show brought the case back into the spotlight and helped get convictions. on spotify.

The Clearing - about a woman who realized later in life that her father was a serial killer while she was a child. another one that's absolutely bonkers and i have listened to multiple times. on spotify.

The Shrink Next Door - same production company as dr. death, about a psychiatrist that completely took over a patient's life & finances, told by the patient after he got out of the situation. you can listen to episode 1 on spotify, but the rest has unfortunately been put behind a paywall 😭

Heaven's Gate - about a cult that committed the largest mass suicide in north america at the time (i believe it was pre-jonestown). on spotify.

Supernatural/Etc.

S-Town - same production company as serial, but only one season. about a small town in alabama and one man who lives there. sort of true crime, kind of not. on spotify.

Let's Get Haunted - they cover true crime occasionally, but mostly do conspiracy theories or stories about ghosts/cryptids/folklore. the hosts are hilarious. this is the podcast that helps me sleep at night and that literally got me through my last two years of uni. there's like. almost 200 episodes so if you want a few specific episode recs lmk i will dm them to you!!! on spotify.

Myths & Legends - the title is pretty self explanatory, but the whole show is about myths, legends, folklore, and fairytales from around the world. it's like if a friend read the story and then recounted it to you in detail, i love it, but i am Very behind. on spotify.

Lore - about various ghost stories & the history behind them, mostly in the usa but from other places too (mostly like. canada & europe from what i remember). i am also years behind on this one but i remember really enjoying it. on spotify.

National Park After Dark - about true crime cases/disasters/supernatural stories in national parks from across the globe. i've only listened to a handful of episodes but it's pretty good! on amazon music & spotify.

ok beyond that what i listen to is either fictional or it's not worth a recommendation AHAHA. sorry if this was overwhelming but i cannot sit in silence and you asked for recs!!! thank u for giving me an excuse to talk about this 💜💜💜

@jrob64 Shame on my for being so ridiculously late to the fun and mischievousness that is this wonderful story!! I kept thinking I was going to save it for when I could really savor, then comment and reblog, and it seemed like the days just kept passing without me getting that time! 😜 All the same, now that I have read it though - what a lovely Modern AU version of our favorite pair! It really was a joy and had me chortling with glee more than once. Such a great read from start to finish.

First off, I just loved the way you set it up. Emma and Killian are very happily married, content and secure in their relationship. So much so, that Zelena can’t even find a chip in the foundation from which to tempt Killian, and Emma doesn’t become mistrustful or suspicious or doubt Killian at all. She knows him and knows he is a man of his word and would never betray her. We didn’t get to see enough of them this happy and solid on the show. Their love is absolutely canonically Thais strong, but we didn’t get to see them revel and enjoy living it nearly enough. This story is great for that before the drama even starts.

I also love how, despite how incredibly attractive he is, Killian seems almost sheepish and embarrassed of the attention. Emma isn’t at all shy in letting him know just how sexy and wonderful she finds him, but he doesn’t seem to want to draw attention, or even fully believe it of himself (which somehow makes the attractiveness even stronger!) Poor guy tried to let his brazen new co-worker down easily, but that just wasn’t enough when she refused to take his hints.

I liked Jasmine and Archie as co-workers for Killian at the university. I could see both of them being people he could be friendly with and enjoy having discussions with u til new girl made him withdraw. I love that really this is why Emm finally takes action. She knows she doesn’t need to worry or be jealous, but she hates to see Killian’s joy in his work at ease with his peers ruined by a woman who can’t take no for an answer.

And how they turn it around on her! It’s hot and funny and deviously perfect!! Thank goodness Zelena finally has to get the message and back off! She took on Mrs. Jones alright - but she is no match for our Emma!!!

Taking on Mrs. Jones - a Captain Swan Modern AU story

This one-shot was inspired by a prompt on the CSMM Discord which ended up lending itself to a request made by @cs-rylie after my ‘heatwave’ story A Pirate’s Guide to Surviving the Heat. She wanted to read more about Emma and Killian role playing with him wearing his red vest, so I wrote this as a birthday gift for her. It’s a little late, my friend, but I hope you still like it!

Thank you to @everything-person for sharing the prompt, @motherkatereloyshipper for working her magic to turn Killian into Silver Fox for this story, @kmomof4​ for helping me plot out the story and @hookedmom​ for, you guessed it, being a rock star beta! 

Story summary: Killian Jones loves his wife Emma and his job as a history professor. When Zelena Green joins the department, she makes Killian uncomfortable with her relentless flirting, but she’ll find out that it’s not wise to mess with Mrs. Jones’s man!

“Hey, Babe. How was work?” Emma Jones asked her husband of seven months as soon as he walked in the door.

“It was, uh…it was okay,” Killian answered haltingly, crossing the room to kiss her.

She pulled back, studying him. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” he shrugged. “What have we planned for dinner?”

She knew a diversion when she heard one and could tell by his body language something was bothering him. “Uh-uh. Nice try, buddy. Did something happen at work today?”

He dropped his eyes and began rubbing at his jaw with his thumb under his chin. Seeing one of his telltale nervous habits, Emma began to get a little worried. She stepped closer to run her hands up his chest, looping her arms around his neck.

“Talk to me, Killian,” she crooned. “You know you can tell me anything.”

He gripped her hips and dragged his eyes up to meet hers. “You know how I told you there was a new professor starting in the history department this week?” At her nod, he continued, “Well, she’s…a bit…flirtatious.”

@thekillingmoonmoon ofc moon is the first one i think when the topic "best writers" come up, i freaking love her and everything she does its not even fair to pick one thing so im picking 3, this super passionate toji work that i re-read at an alarming frequency (which btw i consider my own personal gift). yakuza choso and yuki aka the hottest duo ever. the cherry on top is her kishibe series (just realized i gotta catch up on)

@rinhaler - luxe is def on my top 3, she comes up with very organic scenes. even if it's a simple plot she can develop it so originally. I recently read her underground fighter!sukuna and i'm still thinking about it.

@laudthingcat has the best headcanons in the jjk fandom hands down, it’s the perfect dose of hot funny and cute, pick anything from her masterlist it’s guaranteed you’ll have a good time reading it. when you moan their name in your sleep in particular gives me butterflies

@meownotgood is obviously the best aki writer out there, you can see the love for aki in their words and how they write him so well and so into character. arrival in tokyo is truly a masterpiece, they also have a +100k words series i've been wanting to read for a while but i want to rewatch chainsaw man first hehe, i'm 100% sure is fire tho.

@kentoangel roma writes choso like she's in love with him and you can tell. shes always on my for you and even her snippets are *chefs kiss* special kudos to stepbrother!choso

@kentopedia i just realized i'm assigning a writer per character and nanami is definitely rylie's. the domestic lovely way she writes him makes me forget canon.

@tojisun another blog that is very often on my for you page. cannot talk about toji fics without bringing up sun, everything she writes about him has me furiously nodding. not to mention simon and konig, just talking about them makes me wanna run to her blog and binge read everything

@chocochipsushi 's bodyguard toji is unforgetable to me, i wish i lost my memory so i could read it all again for the first time. bodyguard toji is the definition of living rent free in my mind, whenever i have to deal with annoying coworkers i immediately think “bodyguard toji would not allow them to talk to me like that”

The faint pink rose in Emma's hand stood in stark contrast to her black leather, its scent reminding her of that horseback ride across Camelot, the pirate who held her hand in a field full of roses and purged all the demons from her mind.

This time, she wouldn't fail to do the same for him. She had a second chance to make things right, to get to him before the darkness did, to save the man she loved from himself. She whispered to the rose, to herself, to everyone and no one:

"I'll never stop fighting for us, Killian."

STAWWWWWWP i didnt even give the name LWMFKELFOEOKFOEKF the book is called "gods of jade and shadow" its a mexican gothic and omg this is my first book in this genre and i absolutely adored it so yesss book rec for u <333

MY FIVE FAVORITE???? That's like asking me to choose my 5 favorite children, although I only have 2, so that's fairly easy. Most days.

Okay, I'll give it a try.

Sowing Seeds of Trust is my favorite MC because I love the character development of Emma, the relationship development between her and Killian, and the role the minor characters have in the story. Plus, I tried writing about some very tough subjects - homelessness and unplanned pregnancy. I also liked the way I interwove the Christian community into the story.

Rescuing the Princess. Written as a gift for CS Secret Santa 2021, I tackled a fairy tale mash-up of Sleeping Beauty, Tangled, Beauty and the Beast and The Princess Bride and I have to admit, I'm pretty darn proud of how it turned out!

Lonely No More - an OS based on Christina Perri's EPIC music video featuring our favorite Irishman! I shouldn't say I enjoyed writing about two very lonely people who met each other because of FedEx deliveries, but their developing relationship and how they mended each other's lonely hearts just makes my own heart melt. This is probably my favorite version of CS I've ever written.

Faultline - my first contribution to the CS Movie Marathon collection, inspired by the movie San Andreas. I had so much fun working in all the tension and suspense of Emma, Killian and Liam helping each other make it out of San Francisco after an earthquake. The pic sets for all three chapters were also a lot of fun to make, and this story includes my favorite proposal I've written so far.

Devastation and Healing. This is my first long MC and included research into Physical and Occupational Therapy, along with medical and legal topics I'm pretty clueless about. I adored writing the characters of Marco and August, who are Emma's adopted father and brother. The way Killian went from a physically and emotionally broken man to the love of Emma's life still brings tears to my eyes. I was also very excited about the response I got when I included an unexpected event involving Milah.

Sorry, but I have to include some honorable mentions, because now that my personal library of works is up to 40 (with a few collaborations in there) I feel like only choosing 5 is nearly impossible!

For the Sake of Henry - again tackling a very difficult subject, this time of child abuse and neglect.

Snowstorm Confessions - bed sharing and no power during a blizzard - what's not to love?

Lunch is on Me - of all of my stories, this one probably tugs at my heartstrings the most.
