Five Dogs, One Cat by Ryfkah
Tumblr media
"If you’ve ever believed me in anything, believe I want what’s best for Jin Ling," the first line of the letter reads. Jiang Cheng has to stop and take a moment before he continues on to the next line: "You must come to Carp Tower as soon as you can and lavish praise on the ugliest dog I’ve ever seen."
I love this fic! It's a funny, touching, post-canon MDZS story about Jin Ling's relationship with Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, and comes with an inevitable side of Yunmeng bros reconciliation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was another Binderary project, and a belated Christmas present. I made one copy for me, and one for the friend who introduced me to both this fic, and The Untamed. The cover is printed on a piece of cotton sheet (temporarily backed with freezer paper) with a home laser printer. The endpapers are Nepalese Lokta paper. The spine is acrylic paint using Cricut stencil vinyl. At under 14k, this fic made a cute little half-sized quarto book, just under a hundred pages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did my best to match up the different dogs in each chapter using public domain images. There are a few errors in the chapter opening typesetting I only caught AFTER everything was all glued (of course).
This is probably the lower limit for what I'd want to sew endbands on. The spine was skinny enough that it was decidedly fiddly.

I am a sucker for a classic 5+1 format, and I just love the ending for this one!

art raffle for palestine!
Tumblr media
folks living in the u.s.! the prison abolition collective in washington state that i'm part of is holding a raffle to support the family of alaa, a local community member, whose family is trying to escape genocide in gaza. here's more information on alaa's family.
the raffle items, all of which were donated by artists, writers (including @ryfkah, who donated a signed copy of their awesome fantasy novel the iron children!), and other creative folks we know, are in four "bundles", and you can buy tickets for separate bundles based on what you're interested in. some of the raffle items are experiences or services rather than physical objects. bundle c includes two items that can only be accessed in seattle, washington, but the rest of the bundles can be redeemed anywhere in the u.s. (meaning we would mail you the physical items). more detailed information on the bundles here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there are several different ways to enter the raffle, listed below! you can either give directly to alaa's family and send us proof of your donation, or you can send the money to our rep meredith if that's easier. each raffle ticket is $10 USD, and you can buy up to 10 tickets for each bundle. more detailed info here.
Tumblr media
please consider entering the raffle if you have the means! because of the ongoing ground invasion and bombardment, over 1.5 million palestinians are being forced to flee their homes in gaza, including alaa's family. families trying to escape have to pay ridiculous extortion fees to get across the border to egypt.
you can also share this thread on twitter or add this instagram post to your story. please spread the word!!!

Endless List of Queer Book Recs Part 4: Lady Eve's Last Con by @ryfkah
I knew I was getting gays doing crimes going into this but I wasn't expecting that it was JEWISH gays doing crimes and I was absolutely delighted when I found out. Ruth, the protagonist, describes someone as having a face like an etrog which is a) a very sold burn b) not something a goy would ever think to include. Also features a romantic interest that wears suits and capes and possibly one of the few times the phrase "infuriatingly handsome" can be used to describe the sapphic love interest with perfect accuracy.

hello! this blog seems pretty inactive so im sorry if this is annoying, but i dont know who to ask 💀 do you!! have any fic recs? (I really really wanna see more zuko + gaang found family stuff and also anything with an azula redemption arc would be very cool but I dont know how to find good stuff since im very new to the fanbase so.. hope this is ok! (I am literally always late to fandoms it’s so sad)
also, if there’s any place, like a discord server or tumblr community where I can ask for recs, that would be very helpful to know!! the brainworms must be fed
I haven't been maintaining my queue but I'm around (well, sometimes)! And no worries, if I found asks annoying I would turn them off.
As I said last time, it's been a while since I read a lot of ATLA fic -- but I still have my old favorites! That post also has advice for finding fic recs (particularly geared towards fans of muffinlance but I think it's solid advice in general) -- unfortunately I don't know of any dedicated fic reccing community, just specific people you can follow such as @/captainkirkk and @/royaltealovingkookiness
But yeah look through my bookmarks, look through muffinlance's bookmarks, look through the bookmarks of authors whose fics you like!
Some specific recs:
[my eternal faves are all works by muffinlance and The Dragon-King's Temple -- but you probably already know about those]
The Best Path by EudociaCovert -- I know you said Zuko+gaang but my favorite found family fic is this one, which is Zuko, Jet, and Smellerbee canon divergence from "Zuko Alone". I think it's a little off the beaten path (heh) these days so I wanted to give it a shout.
close your eyes, make a wish by atleastwestoletheshow (Silverwolf329) -- canon universe gaang-bonding-with-zuko-while-fighting-together fic
definitely not suspicious at all in the least by presumenothing (justjoy) -- kinda similar to the above, more of a heist maybe
Big Damn Heroes by Damkianna -- the GAANG in SPACE!! very fun AU, good Zuko content
How It's Done by ryfkah -- the gaang forms a pro-bending team (like in LoK season 1, but you can probably read this even if you haven't seen Legend of Korra)
Tea? by thesometimeswarrior -- Iroh and Azula post-canon, start to an Azula healing arc
and it's my whole heart (weighed and measured) by agentcalliope -- another Azula post-canon fic I found interesting

#and the writing (mini fics?) also feel true to how a lot of translations of tanakh + talmud/commentaries read
For my addition, i actually did just copy and paste from Sotah translations, and then changed one or two words. The Genesis rabbah is just copied right from sefaria lol. Might've merged word orders from Rashi but it's basically all the same. Hilariously I also actually looked at the usernames above and realized I know ryfkah (I'm fromsidere on my personal/private twitter) and I bow to the superior edit humor of the tanakh that I piggybacked off of lmao.
Anyways yes for my addition that is how the translations sound, that's because I'm lazy. 😂
Joseph's brothers would have sold him to One Direction

Last sentence tag game
RULES: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic / original / anything) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence.
Okay @incandescentflower and @attractivegkry have both tagged me, so I give in:
The illusion having thus been so thoroughly shattered, Li Lianhua could only endure his fussing.
Tagging @ryfkah in lieu of 15 people because I don't know that many writers and hers is worth that much, I think!

I want to request Debrief for yuletide, and in preparation for that I thought it long past time that I actually post about it here. Because DEBRIEF! What a game!!! It is a one-hour roleplay game for two players, with very little in the way of game mechanics, and an extensive character sheet for each player. You only get to see your character's sheet, and not the other. It's played over zoom or some other video-conferencing software, and the one hour is a hard time limit built into the conceit of the game, and that hour just WHIZZES by in a maelstrom of emotions!
I was introduced to Debrief via a post about the game from @ryfkah, which includes a spoiler-free description and explanation, plus spoilers for three different runs of the game hidden in rot13. You too can play Debrief if you want, by picking it up for free on the creators' website: Debrief at Paracelsus Games. I highly recommend it!
As the official description goes, Debrief is "a tale of espionage, friendship, betrayal, and necromancy. As the Cold War rages, a British spirit medium working for MI6 must conjure up the ghost of his best friend — now revealed to be a double agent working for the Soviet Union — for one final debriefing."
The game is that final conversation between these two men, George Russell and Robert Alderidge, and holy shit I have so many emotions about the two of them. The way things play out can vary widely from game to game, depending on how the roleplayers play things, but there are some things that are fundamental to them no matter what, and no matter the iteration, I AM THERE.
And now below the cut I'm going to get into the spoilery description of how my run of the game went. I'm not usually a person who worries about spoilers much, but I do want to make note that if you have the slightest idea that you may want to play Debrief yourself at some point in the future, I found the experience of going into the game unspoiled to be enormously good. But I bet you could also have fun playing a version where you and your RP partner agree to both know everything going into it together! It would play out differently, I'm sure, but I think it could lead to some neat places.
I played Russell, the spirit medium, and A. played Alderidge, the double agent. This undoubtedly affects my approach to how I am writing this up, and how I think of the whole story, because I was embedded in Russell's headspace while playing it all out.
Our Alderidge: Genuinely earnestly working on behalf of greater ideals, in love with his ideals because he doesn't have anyone else in his life with whom who he can be fully himself. Our Russell: Just earnest. Trying to be a good guy. Doesn't understand having different approaches to what being good might mean.
Throughout the game, the conversation kept on circling around ideas of whether the broken system which had hurt both of of them when they were younger could be fixed only by incremental means (Russell) or by overthrowing the system entirely (Alderidge) and all of their disagreements came down to that fundamental difference.
As these discussions went on, Alderidge expanded his goal from asking for the ectoplasm disruptor to be given to the Russians, to asking for it to be given openly to everyone, because then it could be used to calm the suffering of all the unquiet ghosts haunting the world. And although Russell was not open to Alderidge's intellectual discussion of the ethics of how to address suffering, in the end Russell WAS open to learning that Alderidge truly cared as deeply for him as he did for Alderidge. Though of course Alderidge was more than a bit allergic to saying anything emotional lol. Alderidge had a mission and he was super embarrassed by the notion that any feelings might take precedence over his ideals; if he were a better person he would have no feelings at all, is what he thinks!
Russel couldn't bring himself to be mean to Alderidge despite Alderidge's treason, though he sure tried in the beginning. He tried to act as if he couldn't trust Alderidge anymore, but on a bone-deep level he still did. He still tried to engage with Alderidge on the level of believing what Alderidge told him. And at the same time, Alderidge really talked a big game of ideals over everything, but ultimately could never help acting out of very personal care for Russell.
And so learning the fact that Alderidge's death happened in consequence of Alderidge refusing to betray Russell personally by sharing the disruptor plans, it really broke Russell.
But despite the degree to which the two of them cared about each other, they fundamentally couldn't agree on how to proceed with the matter of the disruptor.
And although Russell was supposed to be interrogating Alderidge for information, from the start Alderidge was the one controlling the entire conversation. Alderidge could talk circles around anyone and he did his level best to! He did NOT let up, and it was so much fun for me to play against. In one of my favourite moments, Alderidge had been going on for quite a while about whatever point he was trying to prove at the time, and when Alderidge paused briefly, Russell didn't even try to respond to the substance of what Alderidge was saying, and just said in fond despair, "You always were a talker."
As the time limit on their conversation began to threaten, Alderidge let out the fact that he had always loved Russell, and Russell had one of those "replaying my entire life in front of my eyes to recontextualise it" moments and was like, "oh I think I've always loved you too."
And this was what Russell needed in the end, for him to be able move forward out of trust in Alderidge's vision for a better world. Russell agreed to share the disruptor plans with the world, and then planned go on a personal journey of misery to all the battlefields he could make it to (as a traitor then himself) to use the disruptor to bring peace to all the unquiet dead he could. And live the rest of his life wondering if he could have done anything differently in earlier days with Alderidge so that things didn't have to end as they ended.
Russell and Alderidge, both in tears, were able to say goodbye, and Alderidge was able to go peacefully into the light at the last moment. And Russell will never know a day of peace again, because although Alderidge cannot haunt him anymore, Alderidge will haunt him forever.
This is perhaps the closest thing to a happy ending that this game can achieve, and yet it is still agony. They cannot be happy! You can SEE the possible happiness for them but it will ALWAYS be out of reach because of who they are and the situations they're in!
One fun detail I was delighted to learn after playing is that from every game of Debrief I'm aware of any details of, at least once Alderidge pulls out a threat to haunt Russell forever if Russell doesn't do what he wants, and Russell is just like, you think that's a threat?
This is something that came up regularly throughout the conversation in our game! It was a threat that Alderidge repeatedly used to try to convince Russell to give up the disruptor plans, but Russell kind of wanted that haunting. Together forever! No chance of being separated no matter what happens! Being followed by an angry ghost Alderidge for the rest of his life is better than never seeing Alderidge again! Divorce where you still live together is so good.
And there are so many different ways for Russell and Alderidge to love each other and to be miserable.
What if the two of them had gone to the same university? I'm sure they still would have found other ways to agonizingly fail to communicate! There's a small chance things might have been very slightly better, but also it's very possible everything would be somehow even worse!
What if, of the two of them, it was Russell who was the dead ghost traitor instead of Alderidge? That is definitely ALSO not a story with a happy ending!
After I finished playing the game, I felt hesitant to read Alderidge's character sheet because it felt so invasive of his privacy, and it made me think about an au that involved telepathy. Accidental mind bonding would ALSO be agony, of an exciting new flavour!
I want all the AU's showing all the ways they can fail to have a happy ending together!
One of the (many, exquisitely done) things the game is about is what gets in the way of people being able to actually communicate with each other, and to understand each other, and to understand their selves. Both Alderidge and Russell have built up idealizations of each other inside their own heads, and have completely different understandings of what the dynamic between them is.
Even after Alderidge's death, when everything should be over, they still can't manage to talk in complete openness -- even in my playthrough, which is the most successful-at-communicating version I know. There's always a barrier between them, and nothing can actually change that, and love doesn't actually solve all problems.
In talking about Debrief with Becca afterwards, one of the things we discussed was how the various iterations of Debrief that get played are like an awful timeloop of how if Alderidge had ever trusted Russell with any of what was happening while he was alive, he could almost certainly have convinced him to give up the disruptor. But that level of trust was never actually an option! And so it plays out again and again in different games and in different ways, and in each iteration, Alderidge and Russell fail once again to successfully figure out how to break free of the cycle and make things actually work for a change. Agonizing regret is always waiting in the wings for them.
There are so many layers of different things one could discuss about Debrief, and about these characters, and the world they live in, and the people around them. But I think I've gone on long enough at this point!
If you've played Debrief, TALK TO ME! If you haven't played Debrief, can I make a sincere recommendation you give it a try!

a Yuletide fic about various fictional nonsense adventures in 1793 France
Dick's face was white. “Good God – don't you know how the Revolutionary Government feels about Englishmen in disguise these days?”
I tried for a smile. “He speaks French very convincingly.”
Dick groaned and put his head in his hands.

too wise to woo peaceably (bad buddy + much ado about nothing)
i was talking recently with @ranchthoughts about our feelings about bad buddy and theatre, and i was reminded of how the wonderful @ryfkah once wrote on dreamwidth about the parallels between patpran and beatrice & benedick from much ado about nothing! much ado is absolutely my favorite shakespeare play, so ryfkah’s comparisons have lived in my head rent-free since they made their post a year and a half ago:
I actually want to switch gears from Romeo & Juliet and talk a little instead about Beatrice and Benedick. Pat & Pran do not have the exact energy but are definitely B&B-adjacent -- first of all, in that all the habitual patterns of their interactions are set firmly to Bickering and Bravado, but second and more important in that the bickering and bravado already have a huge weight of feeling and history behind them at the time that we enter the narrative. This is the thing, I think, that a lot of other variants on this style of snappy, outwardly antagonistic God I Hate That Person [I Do Not Hate That Person] miss: what makes Beatrice & Benedick work is that we have enough glimpses of context from the dialogue to know that they know each other extremely well, they've cared about each other in the past, and no matter how much they argue they do in fact still care about each other enormously in the present. Likewise, the thing that makes Bad Buddy really fun, for me, is that the events of the show absolutely do not depict not the first time that Pat and Pran have gone from rivalry through cahootship to the realization that they are not only required by circumstance to be obsessed with each other but actually genuinely like each other as people -- this has all happened before, and ended badly. The show begins right after the only period of their life that they've spent not defining themselves against each other, so when they meet once again in a position of nonsense forced rivalship the tension between them has a really different weight to it: Pat is like 'hey, we missed our shot last time but we can do a speedrun! we have a chance to do this again! :D' while Pran, significantly more self-aware about the fact that what they achieved on the last go-round was not just Unfortunately Thwarted Friendship but Powerful Homoerotic Tension with a side of Miserable Romantic Pining, is like 'god I cannot believe that we are here again, constructing intricate rituals AGAIN.' [x]
which gave me a lot of thoughts as well! putting below the cut since it gets a little long.
building off ryfkah's post: one of the things people either seem to love or hate about much ado is its massive tonal shift in the middle. the play starts off with pure shenanigans – battle-of-the-wits banter, using a masquerade ball to pretend to be other people, “let’s try and match-make our friends who hate each other by having them ‘overhear’ conversations about how the other is in love with them!” – classic comedy stuff. and then you get to claudio and hero’s wedding and everything goes to shit.
the interesting thing is that the impact of the shenanigans isn’t negated by the dramatic shift – beatrice and benedick are still, technically, “tricked” into confessing to each other, because each of them goes into their confession thinking the other is already pining away for them. but their confessions happen in a scene where the stakes have been raised already: beatrice is furious about at the defamation of her cousin by claudio and hero’s subsequent heartbreak. beatrice and benedick’s banter falls away, not only into expressing their love, but with beatrice’s conviction, stated plainly, that benedick should kill his best friend. and benedick, though conflicted, agrees to challenge claudio unless he recants the insult he’s done to hero, because beatrice has asked it of him. when performed well, it’s an incredibly raw and impactful scene, and one that always sticks with me. and there's a sense that the trickery by their friends operates mostly as a cover for them to say out loud what they've already been feeling – both the good and bad parts of that, the love and the pain, the confessions and the demands. people who were truly tricked into loving each other by shenanigans wouldn't be this honest with each other at this point, and wouldn't go this far.
i'm not going to claim that there are super direct plot parallels between bad buddy and much ado, and obviously the stakes and level of gravity are very different, but i do get some similar feelings watching both? especially when rewatching the beginning and remembering how silly it is, which i think is absolutely intentional just as it is in much ado. because then, when bad buddy allows pat and pran to reveal their deep connection by letting the banter fall away – when things get serious enough between them that they’re taken out of their “nonsense forced rivalship”, as ryfkah says – it hits even harder.
i'm thinking of pat saying, “i don’t like it. i hate to see you play [the song] with someone else,” on the rooftop, and the way that pran’s been playing their usual game in that conversation thus far, using sarcasm and indifference as his defense, until pat’s honesty makes his expression shift into pain, before he responds in kind with, “pat, you’ve got to stop doing to me.” (@ranchthoughts and @dudeyuri talk beautifully and in-depth about those two lines here.) and again, in episode 6, on the first night of the architecture volunteer trip: pat’s been playing all day, trying to goad pran into talking to him, but when it’s just the two of them on the beach in the dark, pat says, “we’re talking now?”, the hurt clear in his voice, and pran’s face changes again, because he gets out serious pat is now.
and then, of course, we get back to shenanigans soon enough, because those intricate rituals that they build together are important to them: that’s how they talk to each other, and how they have fun together, and the fun is just as crucial to their relationship as the heartfelt moments when they can be there for each other. the second half of bad buddy is so enjoyable to watch because we get to see how their dynamic doesn’t change after they get together, which is a confirmation that they always had a deep and meaningful relationship, even when it was mostly expressed through banter: they just get to say more of it out loud now, when they need to. extremely beatrice and benedick-coded tbh.

Fluffy fanfic rec list
On one of my Discord servers people were talking about how people seem more likely to recommend angsty fic, so I decided to put together a fluff rec list, just for fun! This is gonna be a variety of fandoms, wordcount length, genres, etc. -- the common factor is I like ‘em and they turned up when I search “fluff” in my bookmarks. I’ll point out if any are nsfw
ATLA
see your son rising at last by aloneintherain --  ATLA -- 6.5k words -- Iroh & Zuko 5+1 things fic
North by ryfkah -- ATLA -- 300 words -- short & sweet Appa POV fic
definitely not suspicious at all in the least by presumenothing -- ATLA -- 1k words -- post-canon Gaang shenanigans
All The Gentle Creatures by Haicrescendo -- ATLA -- 10k words -- animals love Zuko, he’s basically a Disney Princess
Yuri!!! On Ice
see you next level by verity -- YoI -- 1.5k words -- Yuuri, Viktor & Phichit get drunk & watch TV, Yuuri & Viktor continue to be the most adorably sappy couple
Friendship!!! Is Magic by afrai -- YoI & OHSHC -- 10k words -- Yuuri & Haurhi meet at a conference and become friends. Viktor & Tamaki make fools of themselves (but what else is new)
Howl’s Moving Castle (mostly bookverse)
Second Time Lucky by labellementeuse -- HMC -- 5.5k words -- Howl & Sophie plan their wedding (lol i spelled that “weeding” on the first try... also accurate). As you might expect for these two it doesn’t go without some hiccups.
Could it be magic? by SpiritedYoungLady -- HMC -- 500 words -- Howls comes back from night with the rugby club, and Sophie is unamused
Fulllmetal Alchemist (mostly bhood/manga)
All That Describes a Joyful Heart by anthrop  -- FMA -- 3k words -- Hohenheim & Trisha cook together during a winter storm & they are simply TOO ADORABLE. Features some Xerxian cultural headcanons inspired by Nowruz (Persian New Year) traditions!
And They Were ROOMMATES by Turbulent_Muse -- FMA -- 30k words -- Modern AU in which college student!Ling moves into a haunted house, but since the rent is too good to pass up, he decides to try and befriend the demon. Greedling friendship & adventure fic.
Science for People Who Hate Science by Tierfal -- FMA -- 66k words -- Royed Modern AU, but even if you dislike that ship you might want to give this one a chance; it’s really more of an origfic about two characters losely inspired by Roy & Ed. They run a goofy educational youtube channel and are two dorks in love. Al shows up to make fun of them sometimes. It’s a good time!
The Sleeping Horror of Whiskerford by Eltea -- FMA -- 3.5k words -- another modern AU, in which the gang (Ed, Al, Winry, Riza, Roy, Hughes) plays D&D. Worth it for Ed’s character sheet alone, but overall just a hilarious & fun time.
A Clowder of Cats by Batsutousai -- FMA -- 4k words -- post-canon (a more-or-less canon universe fic for once!), Al settles down and adopts a bunch of cats (AS HE DESERVES)
Teen Wolf
the butt is a gift by lazulisong -- Teen Wolf -- 1.5k words -- Stiles is pinned to the couch by cats. I think this is part of a larger AU but tbh I don’t care: Stiles, cats, relatable dilemmas, what more do I need?
When the Bough Breaks by The Feels Whale (miscellea) -- Teen Wolf -- 12k words -- A bit of a weird one, but sometimes I like my TW fic weird. post-canon-ish/canon-divergence with endgame Sterek; Stiles is on the outs with Derek’s pack until they learn that he’s adopted a baby, and then they’re suddenly all over to dote on her. I actually really mostly liked this for Stiles’ single parent struggles and (platonic) relationship with the baby’s birth mother, the werewolf stuff & romance was cute but mostly incidental.

it's a new craze by attheborder -- Good Omens -- 5k words -- Crowley & Aziraphale start an advice podcast
Hot Springs and New Beginnings by CorundumBleu -- Hollow Knight -- 3k words -- in a good ending universe, Quirrel, the Knight, and The Last Stag relax at a hot springs and discuss hopes for the future. I recommend looking through CorundumBleu’s other HK fics as well -- there’s a couple other good fluff fics in there and some most angsty but still amazing stories! (I’m biased: CB is my sister & I helped edit these, but still, I think they’re great!)
Sufficient by atheilen -- The Goblin Emperor -- 2k words -- deaged!Maia; in which everyone and particularly Beshelar shows how much they care for and cherish Maia.
Sick Day by avg (AnxiousEspada) -- The Murderbot Diaries -- 4k words -- Overse & Arada are sick; Ratthi and later Murderbot visit to help them out. “To everyone’s surprise, a feverish Overse is SecUnit approved humor-fuel.” (P.S. if you like this fic consider checking out my sequel to it!)
Thrilling Night! Romantic Adventure at the Video Rental Store! by Masu_Trout --  Undertale -- 2.5k words -- wonderful Outsider POV of an employee at a video rental store who gets the admittedly uncertain priviledge of helping Alphys and Undyne pick out a movie to rent for their date night. I’m still not over the movie they end up picking, OMG.
Gonna add a reblog with BNHA, Natsuyu, Gravity Falls, and maybe some HP recs tomorrow.
Also, if you like these fics and know of more like them, feel free to let me know! I’m always taking fic recs (I’m slow to get around to them but I WILL save your recs for later) :P
