Deathmatch vs Meta
-slash across front (shoulder to hip) with bruteshot

RvB18x07 Thoughts:
I’ve said this a lot but oh my god this is WILD.
Okay, Phase seems to remember things from either Holo-East’s perspective, or from when she was a part of the team as East herself. Which I like, I really do; I like that the relationship we saw between One and East/Phase isn’t all lost to a period of time where it wasn’t actually really Phase interacting with her. All of the tension, teamwork and potential between them is still real and I love it.
Especially getting to see One apologise. There’s something special to me in that the parallels we see here in this season don’t follow through completely. One and her parallels to Carolina are clear, but unlike Carolina in the midst of the worst days of Freelancer, she’s able to see past everything and apologise before it’s too late (no matter what Phase says). The parallels between West and the Director, shitty dads who experimented on or let their daughter be experimented on, end where West is able to admit his mistakes and face Phase, where the Director... never even really truly acknowledged what he’d done. Shatter Squad contains echoes of the past, but they diverge at the most important point.
We got that shot of East just staring at Phase and West. I’m not fully willing to let go of my idea that East is a little more autonomous, a little more sapient on her own, than Phase realises. At the very least, East and Phase when she has East as a part of her seem much less willing to fight, and that means something going forward.
Carolina’s a badass but that’s undisputed. This feels like some of the better fight animation we’ve had for her in a while, she’s back to her acrobatic self, and I’m so happy to see her dual-wielding upgraded versions of her shock batons. My dream here would be Wash coming in last minute to help, honestly, but I don’t expect it; I think there must have been scheduling conflicts with Shannon or something going by how little Wash is actually around. But it’d be nice, the thing with Carolina is she’s capable of winning on her own but her odds are always best when she has a team.
Now, Zero and the ultimate power... I laughed so hard when it was the goddamn fucking unicorn helmet, but I am very intrigued by the fact that he was briefly forced to face a keeper, of sorts, like we see with Santa on Chorus. The test of strength here is much more literal, he’s being given the armour but he has to survive/withstand using it to earn it. It’s physical strength, where you could argue that Chorus was about mental strength. Two separate parts of the equation.
We continue to see the effects of what are probably them having to cut content for time, not necessarily in the episode itself but in what wasn’t in episodes previous to this. The missing planted pieces, the pacing, is all likely a side effect of them only having 8 episodes to handle things and so I continue, as always, to be pretty forgiving of it. (As a fan of the Freelancer seasons which are... much messier in terms of their ability to convey a timeline, plot points, certain world building and more, I’d almost feel hypocritical otherwise :P) Some of it’s surely writing inexperience, but again, that’s something that can change and be improved if they’re given the chance.
There are a lot of little things I wish could be resolved by the end of the season that probably won’t be, but hey ho. I’m excited to see how this first season does conclude.

I’m taking simmons’ ‘relationship?’ reply to mean he KNOWS he and grif love each other but is surprised by the notion that they’re actually in a relationship bc they’ve literally never talked about it even if everybody else keeps teasing them about it
and I’m taking grif’s ‘loving?’ reply to mean he KNOWS he and simmons are in a relationship but is surprised by others realizing it’s a loving one because they spend most of their time bickering and hey, his reputation as the guy who doesn’t get invested is in jeopardy
and NONE of you can stop me

RvB Zero Alliance Of Defense Headcanon/Theory
The Alliance of Defense, or AOD for short, was an alliance that formed between the UEG/UNSC and a collection of independent human colony worlds during the Human-Covenant War. As the Covenant threat more and more clearly became an existential threat to all of humanity, several independent colonies, including some former Insurrectionist worlds, formed a treaty amongst themselves and the UEG in order to provide mutual defense and information sharing in order to stand a better chance against the Covenant.
As time went on, the AOD more and more became a cudgel, a way for the UEG to unofficially reign in and control Outer Colony worlds. As shown by ONI going to the Outer Colonies to “recruit” the Spartan-IIs, it is far easier to hide illicit activities among the far flung colonies of Humanity, and so the AOD became a hotbed of controversial scientific and military experiments, both for cutting edge medical research that wasn’t strictly legal, or questionably ethical experiments on how to create a better soldier. They even studied alien artifacts in order to try and gain an edge. This sort of research was concentrated in Starlight Labs.
However, despite all of the secrecy and illicit activities of the AOD, those living under its protection hear little more than rumors. And while some cynically see the AOD as a way for Earth to control independent systems, others praise them as being the only thing that kept them safe during the days of the Human-Covenant War.

RVB: ZERO LIL NOTES AND STUFF
Episode 5: Sideways
"I done it myself" Tucker's worst fear is being alone so and he was always surrounded by other people and it was other people that helped bring out the best in him, but okay.
I really fucking hope this is in chorus.
Didn't they say in the panel after rvb 17 that Tucker's character is basically no longer the "Dirty jokes ladies man" and that his old character traits will be going to Kai?
Zero: *is coming for Tucker's sword*
Tucker: *casually hold is his sword*
BITCH PUT IT AWAY FOR A GOD DAMN SECOND?!
NO BITCH WHAT THE FUCK THEY DID NOT STAB HIM AGAIN.
YAAALLLLLLLLL
WHAT?
WHAAATTTTT?
EAST AND PHASE WERE?
WHAT?
Did they actually kill him? They fucking didn't.
The sword isn't activating? HE'S NOT DEAD.
I swear to god if they killed him off

rvb18 wishlist
-wash and caboose spending more time together
-specifically during washs recovery
-especially bc in rvb16 washs main difficulty w his injury seemed to be his memory, and caboose already has plenty of practice with being in charge of remembering for people

RvB18x08 Thoughts:
Okay, I’m going to start with my only negatives: Tucker needs his sword back. That’s my one major gripe this season, because I’m okay with the sword transferring as a plot point, but Phase keeping it full time would bother me because it’s Tucker’s sword. There’s still potential for it to be given back next season, as I believe the way Phase looked at it at the end there may come with a level of guilt for how she acquired it, but I am a little disappointed that that wasn’t resolved. I’m not going to focus on it, but I really, really hope they deal with that.
Also, I wish we’d seen more Wash, but I do think we may have had some scheduling issues with Shannon or something that contributed, plus the cast was already fairly crowded compared to the time they had without Wash entering full time.
NOW, onto the positives, of which there are much more:
The character dynamics this episode are so, so good. I feel like some of the characters’ personalities and dynamics got a tiny bit more room to shine in this two parter and I love them. One coming into her position as a leader, Raymond and all his dorkiness, Carolina leaning into the ‘Grandma’ thing... and PHASE. Phase.
We knew she was going to switch sides before she did, I think; even at the start of the final fight against Zero, Phase tried to say she wasn’t one of the team, but you can see as she gets into the fight that she falters on that conviction immediately. One’s apology wasn’t too late, last episode; it clearly meant something to her, and so Phase and One work together in a way they weren’t capable of whilst fighting Carolina earlier in the season. West’s refusal to actually hurt her, his apologies, his owning up to what he did, him telling her he loved her... Phase didn’t want that to get to her, but it did. Her little breakdown screaming was clearly a ‘fuck, I’m feeling things I don’t want to feel’.
I said last week but I love how the parallel to Carolina and the Director ends with West admitting his faults and not expecting forgiveness. I don’t think the conflict between him and Phase is entirely over, it’s too messy for it to be, but what he said was enough to push Phase the final foot she needed to flip sides.
The banter at the end... god bless. All this time we’ve joked about Raymond’s name and it was deliberate, that was such a dumb but fun little callback to the start. Which also means they thought he’d pulled a Felix and used a real name as a codename which is fucking hysterical to me. I wonder if he will have a codename next season, or if he’ll just be too used to being just Ray(mond) to everyone and stick with that. I do like the real names, even if Danyell is a strange spelling? But Jamie fits One well, and Lance fits Axel well.
“What is wrong with you?” “She was experimented on as a kid.” “WOW, screw you.” I fucking love them?????????
We’re definitely set up for a second season, by the way. That’s why I keep saying ‘next season’ throughout. Zero isn’t dead, just contained. We never saw Diesel’s body, so I’m not entirely convinced he won’t come back either, especially with Alien fuckery going on. The team is now a Team and they’ll no doubt continue to train for other things, but then Zero will rear his ugly head again and they’ll have to confront him, potentially with a better handle on the power since the Lotus (who I am claiming as another forerunner construct, no one can stop me) doesn’t seem to want to be contained.
There’s all the pieces here for a new season and I would really like to see where this goes, especially if they get more time to work with. This team has real potential and a lot of the problems with this season are caused by the circumstances, inexperience and so on; I truly believe they’re going to do even better next time.
I’m going to do a sort of catch-all essay about this season at some point, to cover some of the big things that I think I want to talk about (the Key/Great Power plot, the AOD/GLASS thing, the Wash thing, etc), but right now consider my posts on the season so far my stance on everything.
Zero has its flaws, but it has infinitely more potential. And I want to see where it leads.
