NORTH CAROLINA
2024 June 20 (Thu) – Woke at 8 AM.  Packed up and left South of the Border campground in Dillon, SC, at 9:30 AM.  It was another long drive to the RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in Roanoke Rapids.  It is a lovely campground.  Very resort like.  There is a pool and hot tub.  The place is very neat and orderly.  We have a pull-thru site with FHU.
Once set up, we drove into town to get fuel for tomorrow’s move and dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse.  As we were sitting in the restaurant, I noticed a painting on the wall.  On the painting was a sign that read “Halifax: Birthplace of Independence.”  Well, that stirred our imaginations and called for further investigation.  How did Roanoke Rapids in North Carolina become the birthplace of independence when the history books talk about Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania?  We had to know.
We drove to Halifax.  Turned out to be just six miles from the campground.  There were several original buildings in historic Halifax – from the 1700 and 1800s.  The story goes that the inhabitants of the area were fed up with the King of England and all his demands.  They called for revolution to break away from England.  I don’t know where talk of breaking away started, but it seems voices joined together and as a new nation, the 13 colonies revolted and sought their independence.  Very interesting.

Remarks: 'My husband and I have had limited experience with nude communities/resorts, but we really enjoyed our past experience enough that we were eager to try out Cedar Creek for a weekend and truly relax. We are so glad that we did. We had a truly wonderful time. Everyone was fantastic. Very friendly and very welcoming; all of the members/regulars were super hospitable to visitors. The staff made it very apparent that they care about the resort and truly want to help you have a great time on the property. The common facilities were very clean and well maintained. You could also tell that they are constantly working to make improvements to the resort. We tent camped with electric for 2 nights, which worked great for us. You quickly realize why so many people invest in membership and set up campers there or homes nearby. The resort was kind enough to let us use their tubes to float down the creek, which was lovely and refreshing, considering how hot the weather was and how cool the water temp was. The dock area was probably my favorite spot. The water is so clear. Really enjoyed cooling off down there. Outdoor pool is great — always plenty of friendly people around the pool. The lunch on Saturday and the breakfast on Sunday really hit the spot. We also enjoyed the parties and drinks with great company. Excellent experience, and so glad we brought lots of sunscreen, bug spray, and water shoes for the creek. Made it home with no bugs bites or sunburns after 3 days at Cedar Creek, where it was mostly sunny and highs around 90 each day. Highly likely that we’ll return when we can!' – Tiffany from Florida

Remarks: 'My wife and I have been getting away to Cedar Creek Resort in Pelion, South Carolina for years. We enjoyed the grounds and many of the people there. We love Nudestock, a weekend long clothing optional music festival on the last full weekend of September. Otherwise, when we visited Cedar Creek in the past, we avoided management and the clicks that used to pull the place down. Predictably, the old guard mismanaged their way to insolvency.
Cedar Creek is now under new ownership and management. It is much better now! Mark, Molly and Adam are warm and friendly! We genuinely look forward to seeing them. Nudestock continues each September. They have improved the sound and quality of the bands. Cedar Creek now has a DJ dance party nearly every weekend in the club house. They’ve added a great DJ booth and dance floor. Improvements to the physical grounds are ongoing. They are slowly but surely repairing and improving the facilities. Lots of new people coming now. Cedar Creek is doing much better and definitely worth a visit.' – Dave and Chel from South Carolina

But whereas it’s true that Florida is without doubt one of the warmest locations on the U.S. mainland, the subtropical local weather means it’s additionally liable to hurricanes and thunderstorms.
Hurricane season
‘Hurricane season’ lasts from June 1st to November 30th, and is often the most important concern for vacationers, because the summer season trip falls proper in the midst of this era. Although some vacationers do really feel anxious about travelling throughout hurricane season, the probability of getting caught in a severe storm may be very low. In reality, you could even be capable of reap the benefits of decrease vacationer numbers throughout sure months of hurricane season. For instance, Disney World’s customer numbers between mid September and mid November are a number of the lowest all year long.
The excellent news for theme park fanatics is the Orlando space is never hit with the worst storms, a serious purpose why theme parks selected to construct there. Nevertheless, if the Nationwide Hurricane Heart for the Orlando space does subject a Hurricane Warning inside 7 days of your scheduled arrival date, it is best to be capable of reschedule your tickets and accomodation. Full park closures are few and much between, and the final time Walt Disney World closed utterly as a result of a storm was in 2016, throughout Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Matthew.
Solely two hurricanes truly find yourself making landfall on the U.S. East Coast every year, with solely 40% of them hitting the Floridian coast. Prices between these areas are comparatively comparable, with the typical value per day sometimes amounting to between £27 and £29.
Pay as you go Toll Programmes
For vacationers, one of many biggest advantages of renting a automotive is that the majority automotive rent firms in Florida can have ‘toll-by-plate’ programmes arrange for his or her prospects, with the intention to make driving on the various toll roads far simpler. Any tolls or further fees might be charged to the bank card that you simply used to pay on your rental automotive, which means you may drive straight by way of the toll cubicles with out having to frantically search for change.
In case you are planning on bringing your personal automotive, then signing up with a pay as you go toll programme like Solar Cross will supply you an identical luxurious, and make sure that you don’t get caught out on the toll cubicles. The excellent news is that Solar Cross additionally works in Georgia and North Carolina, so if you happen to’re travelling from a close-by state, you’ll be capable of cowl your self for tons of of miles value of tolls.
Worldwide Drivers
In 2013, the state of Florida deserted the (usually unenforced) requirement for an Worldwide Driving Allow (IDP) for folks visiting from English-speaking nations, if their drivers’ license is in English. Whereas there nonetheless appears to be a bit confusion on the topic, you shouldn’t encounter any points in Florida with an English-language drivers’ licence.
While you go to someplace as lovely as Florida, the very last thing you need to be doing is spending hours pre-planning each final element. However taking the time to plan for crucial issues is not going to simply prevent valuable money and time, however provide the peace of thoughts to chill out and luxuriate in your well-earned trip.

News Flash: Family Travel Doesn’t Even Require a Passport
Passport free affordable family travel inspiration that will get you to actually leave the house with your kids.
Tumblr media
Often times, I have parents ask me for advice regarding travel with children and I remind them that international travel is not the only way to expose and share experiences with your kids. I’m well aware that if you search the hashtag #travel or #familytravel, you will come across many staged and photoshopped images of what seems like perfectly behaved jet setting families in Paris, Malasia, Kenya, Greece and every international Disney Park, yet I’m here for the family who’s trying to figure out how to pull off a simple in state road trip, overnight trip or weekend adventure. While we love exploring so many amazing places that are ideal family travel locations, I’m also all about the local and regional travel experiences. Why? It’s more realistic that the average family will be able to plan, afford and actually pull off an overnight trip or weekend getaway, than a safari or two week long trip through Europe. Realistic and affordable family travel is imperative to breaking the obstacles to family travel for most people.
Tumblr media
Family travel is not something we do to simply check off a box, say that we’ve been there and because it’s currently the trendy thing to do. We were those lone black people hiking, camping, skiing and in typically not family orientated travel destinations, before family travel became the “in” thing. It’s been an integral part of our family values and way of life for over nineteen years. This means that we place as much emphasis on the experiences and lessons learned while taking a day trip to Block Island, Rhode Island or a weekend trip to Acadia National Park, Maine, as we do on our trip to Havana, Cuba. Travel is truly as much about the process of getting to the destination, as it is about experiencing said destination with our children. What do I mean? Children who grow up to be adults who love adventure and experiences are born in transit. They are born in their ability to pack their bags, organize the car, plan their trip and live in the moment once they arrive. They’re born in the ability to make the most out of the unexpected or hiccups in their plans, without those challenges completely ruining their trip.
These lessons can be learned without even owning a passport, a car or the funds to take you on that bucket list trip. You don’t need to have TSA Pre Check, Global Entry or Mobile Passport to raise travel loving and adventure seeking children. You can accomplish these goals by teaching your kids how to explore their own back yard, state, region and country. The United States or your own home country are filled with incredibly beautiful places just waiting for you to experience them. I challenge you to rethink the passport stamp seeking family travel culture that we’re bombarded with daily on social media and you will realize that it’s not as unattainable as you once thought. Even as a family travel blogger, I find myself rolling my eyes at some of the elitists posts that I see on social media these days. I’m here to tell you that it’s perfectly okay if your kids don’t leave the country until they have their first job and can afford to buy their own flight. While we do travel internationally with our four children, I must acknowledge that international travel is not something that is immediately available to most families with two children, much less those with four. I encourage you to start traveling with your kids by choosing trips that meet your personal family budget. Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s paralyzing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The older I get, the more I appreciate a good long weekend family trip. I don’t have the attention span for most 7-day trips with kids. I love long weekends and 5-night trips because they allow our family to create amazing memories while not completely disrupting our daily flow, routine and wallet. Also, as a large family, lodging, food and transportation costs add up quickly. I’d rather travel more often, than travel longer in one single trip. This is our family’s preference and you will figure out your own family travel flow, the more you get out of the house with your kids. I’ve written previous blog posts about the fact that family travel is not a vacation. It requires a shift in thinking and an acceptance to what your reality is as a parent leaving the house with children. It’s a fact. You will have to put in all of the work required to parent on a daily basis while you are away from home. Travel will only accentuate your troublesome family dynamics. Ugh, sorry I had to say that! It’s reality. I’ve spoken to so many parents who say that they don’t travel with their kids because their kids don’t listen, misbehave and thus damper their travel experience. Those are issues that I highly recommend that you address and deal with before you embark on a week long trip with children. Traveling didn’t cause these issues, but having kids out of their element accentuates all of those things to a degree that will cause you to never leave home again. Thus, be realistic in your travel expectations with children. You may be in a season that requires shorter trips. Embrace that. The season of longer travel will be here before you know it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don’t be paralyzed by all of the family travel posts to expensive travel destinations, that leave you feeling inadequate, despondent and slightly depressed. Start somewhere. Start Local. Start now. You won’t regret it and in the meantime, you’ll be planting those seeds that you will surely sow at the right time in your family’s lifetime. These are some of our favorite family travel destinations that hopefully will get your wanderlust juices flowing. I bet some of these are close enough to you that you can make a long weekend out of them.

What are some of your favorite affordable family travel destinations? What are some of the obstacles that you face in starting to travel with your kids?
Pro tips for affordable local family travel:
- Travel off season. Island destinations like Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard are just as stunning, more affordable and less crowded in the off season. Ski resorts make amazing Spring, Summer and Fall destinations. Off season travel also mean that you won’t face minimum night requirements and thus allow you to take a weekend trip rather than a full week.
- If you have young children and don’t need to work around a school schedule, hotels are cheaper on Sunday nights and mid week. Avoid Friday and Saturday nights unless traveling to business destinations and then weekends are actually less expensive at some of the really nice business hotels.
- Brand loyalty does pay off. If you do stay in hotels, follow the deals and not the destinations. Also, stick to one brand and sign up immediately for their rewards programs. Many of our annual hotel stays are free nights using rewards.
- Don’t be afraid to book Airbnb’s. As a large family, we often book condos and full houses at a significantly cheaper rate than a hotel stay.
- I use Costco often for car rentals. They offer the best deals for vehicles that can accommodate our family.
- Be flexible and creative in your lodging options. We’ve stayed outside of beach towns for 1/4 of the cost of staying on the beach. Flexibility in family travel is key to actually going anywhere.
- Be willing to try new things. We’ve stayed in cabins, RVs and tent camped. I honestly never pictured myself having some of the amazing experiences that we’ve shared with our children. To think that I may have missed these memories if I stuck to that which I was comfortable with.

SOUTH CAROLINA
2023 Dec 3 (Sun) – We packed up and left Mrytle Beach at 10 a.m.  It was a pleasant drive to Lake Jasper RV Village in Hardeeville.  The campground is a resort with a pool and games and such.  It’s a shame we are only here for one night.  We paid almost $72 for a pass-through.
After set up, we drove into town to get fuel, then went to dinner at Frankie Bones.  It was a very interesting restaurant.  Since Hardeeville is close to Hilton Head, this is an upscale neighborhood.  The restaurant was very classy, given their richer clientele.  I had a spaghetti squash primavera and Paul enjoyed a seafood dish with scallops, shrimp and crab.  Everything was delicious.
2023 Dec 2 (Sat) – We went to the movies today to see “Napoleon.”  It turned out to be very disappointing.  It was more of a love story than a war movie.  It was slow, plodding, and confusing.  We did not enjoy it.
After the movie, we stopped at CVS to pick up the new prescription the doctor prescribed for high blood pressure for me.  I went on line to look at reviews and was dismayed to see so many people criticize amlodipine.  There wasn’t a single positive statement on the use of this medication.  I think I will work harder on losing weight and try to avoid taking this stuff.  We still couldn’t find a larger cuff for the BP machine so Paul ordered it online.  We will pick it up at my cousin’s in a few days when we are in Merritt Island.
We also stopped at Hallmark so I could pick up a few Christmas cards.
2023 Dec 1 (Fri) – We packed up and left Florence at 11:25 am.  Since it was a short drive today, we dragged our feet in leaving.  Paul spent the morning washing the truck and rig.  The drive was an easy hour and a half.  We arrived at the Swamp Fox Campground in Myrtle Beach at a quarter after 1:00.  The campground is OK.  It’s an older place but kept up alright.  We have a concrete pad, fire ring and picnic table with full hookups.
After lunch, we headed over to my brother, Dennis’, place.  He and his lady live in a condo in a retirement community.  It’s a nice place although it has a second floor with a long staircase.  He is 81 and she is in her late 70s.  He is very healthy for now (rides his bike to the gym and presses weight every day) but it become a problem if either one of them develops a hip problem.  Regardless, their place was lovely.  Denise was not there, having flown back to New York this morning.
Dennis took us in his 2006 Mustang to look around town.  He took us to Broadway at the Beach, an area with rides like a Coney Island type place.  We walked around a bit then got back in the car and drove to the boardwalk.  It was lovely.  The boardwalk was wide and right on the ocean.  Reminded me of Atlantic City boardwalk and Jones Beach.  We walked the mile up and down the boardwalk, looking in a couple of stores and buying a Myrtle Beach souvenir.
We left and decided to go to a favorite restaurant of Dennis’ – California Dreaming.  He couldn’t find the place (it was now dark), so we went to his place, said good-bye, hopped in our truck, and took off.  We tried to go to Bonefish Grill but the roadway was difficult to navigate and we couldn’t get to it.  As we were driving around, we discovered California Dreaming so we stopped there.  The place was huge!  Lots of mirrors add to the effect.  The meal was good and the waiter was attentive.
2023 Nov 30 (Thu) – We packed up and left Fountain Inn at 10 am.  It was a beautiful drive with the sun shining and light traffic.  We stopped after two hours at Love’s to have lunch, then continued on.  We arrived at the Swamp Fox Campground in Florence at 1:30 pm.  The campground is somewhat rundown and turning to seed.  There are many RVs that look very old and unkempt with stuff overrunning the area around them.
After set up, we drove into town to get fuel.  Florence is a pretty big town.  After fuel, we drove to CVS to look for a blood pressure cuff.  They did not have what we wanted so we went across the street to Walgreens but they didn’t have anything either.  We will have to order it on line.  I sent an email to the cardiologist, telling him to call my prescription into the CVS in Myrtle Beach.  We will be there for two days, visiting my brother, Dennis.
2023 Nov 29 (Wed) – We went over to Travis’ house at 3 pm.  Sam asked us to watch Lincoln while she went to pick up Noah and Hudson.  Turned out that Travis didn’t go to work today.  When everyone was home, we took them to Lil’ Rebel for dinner.  It was a café-type place with a large menu and good prices.  After dinner, we drove to the Kroc Center where Hudson and Sam played basketball, and Travis and we watched the other two boys swim.  At 7:30 pm, we bid good-bye to everyone.
2023 Nov 28 (Tue) – Paul and I went shopping today.  I bought new sneakers and a pair of earrings (I had lost my last pair on the airplane to NY).  We had breakfast at the Clock Drive-In.  It turned out not to be as nice as Paul imagined it would be.  We had lunch at the mall at Sarku, a restaurant we liked very much in NY.  It wasn’t quite the same here.  We stopped at Ingles and picked up a few things on the way home.
The cardiologist called this morning to say my bloodwork was in.  My cholesterol is high and he wants me to start taking a statin.  In addition, I have been having mild headaches and running a little high in my blood pressure.  He suggested that I also take a medication for that.  I told him we would find a CVS and let him know where to call the prescription in to.
2023 Nov 27 (Mon) – We didn’t do much today.  Drove over to Travis’ for dinner.  Sam’s parents joined us.  Sharon made ziti and we brought Italian bread.  Travis & Sam were having a fight.  The kids were running around and screaming and fighting.  It was all overwhelming and we left almost immediately after dinner.  The atmosphere was very uncomfortable.
2023 Nov 26 (Sun) – The boys woke happy and ready to greet the day.  Paul made pancakes for everyone then we took a walk around the campground.  It is a plain facility with only a small office and smaller laundry building with 4 washers and 4 dryers.  Noah and I looked at all the RVs, commenting on what we liked and didn’t like about them.  Paul and Hudson threw a frisbee back and forth during the walk.
We met Travis and Hudson at 2nd & Charles, a huge bookstore with lots of other stuff.  Travis took Noah to a play and we watched Hudson and Lincoln.  When we were done in the bookstore, we took the two boys to Runway Park.  It was a playground right at the airport.  There was also a small mini golf course there.  We watched private jets take off and land as the boys played.
When finished (it was cold), we went to the house and hung out until everyone else got home.  Travis made dinner then we left.
2023 Nov 25 (Sat) – It was another busy day.  We ran out of propane overnight and Paul ran out to get the tanks refilled this morning.  The temperatures have been hovering just above freezing.  It warms up to the low 50s during the day but nights are really cold.  I am looking forward to heading south.
Noah had his bowling league this morning.  We joined them at the bowling alley.  Travis & Sam went food shopping while we watched the kids.  After playing pool, Hudson wanted to bowl.  So Paul and Hudson bowled 3 games and I watched Lincoln in the small arcade room.  Afterward, we went back to the house and helped Travis put up Christmas lights.
At 4 pm, we climbed into the truck with Noah and Hudson, and Travis got into his truck with Lincoln and we drove to Easley for the Upstate Holiday Light Show.  Turned out it didn’t start until 6 pm, so we drove to Freddy’s Steakhouse and got dinner for everyone.  We got back on line at the show at 5:30 pm.  They opened promptly at 6 pm.  We drove the route through the light show.  They had a fantastic display that included the lights timed to music.  We drove around the route twice.  At the end of the drive was a small carnival and a petting zoo.  We bought tickets and the boys enjoyed some of the rides.  Then we wandered through the petting zoo.  The animals enjoyed the food we gave them.
When the show was over, we brought the two boys back to the camper with us and they spent the night sleeping on the floor.
2023 Nov 24 (Fri) – My trip to NY was nice but went by very fast.  Kenny’s grandmother passed away the Monday before I arrived home so I was able to attend the wake and funeral services.  I had to rearrange or cancel doctor’s appointments but I got it all done.  I was only able to see the cardiologist and the oncologist while home.  I will make up the next time I go home in February. All reports were fine.
Yesterday was Thanksgiving.  We went over Travis’ house and shared a fabulous meal with his family as well as Sam’s parents, Sharon & Greg.  We gave a few gifts to the kids.  We will be bringing over the larger number of gifts for them to put under the tree.  Hudson gave everyone gifts.  They turned out to be books he got from school.  The library had a bunch of books they were giving away and he took many of them.  It was cute.
After doing the laundry this morning, we went over Trap’s and took the kids to the Greenville Zoo (Sam had to work today).  It was small but nice.  They have a very nice playground that the kids enjoyed as well.  After the zoo, we drove to a park that had a mini golf course.  You just have to bring your own golf club and ball to play.  We went back to the house for a while then came home.  It was a very busy day.
2023 Nov 14 (Tue) – We dropped the truck off at Ford and got a loaner to use while it is in the shop.  We then went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast.  It was not good.  This place has gone downhill in the last few years.  The biscuits were small and stale.  My scrambled eggs were not cooked all the way.  Our plates looked empty when they were brought out.  And the waitress seemed to be uninterested in serving anybody.  We had to call her over to refill our coffee cups and then again to bring the bill.  When we got back, we did the laundry.  I finished up SMART emails and work assignments.
Kenny’s grandmother passed away yesterday.  Miranda sent me information about the wake and funeral.  I had to rearrange doctor appointments but was able to clear most of my calendar.  I cancelled an eye exam and pushed the cardiologist to a later time.  I tried to cancel the dentist but there was no answer.  I’ll try again tomorrow.
We drove to Travis’ house at 3.  Sam left us to watch Hudson and Lincoln while she ran to the school to pick up Noah.  Paul and Lincoln played together while Hudson and I played Scrutinize.  He is obsessed with the game and wants to play it constantly.  Sam cooked dinner and we played one more game of Scrutinize before leaving.  I had to pack for tomorrow’s trip to New York.
2023 Nov 13 (Mon) – We drove to Arden, NC, to meet Travis at his job with The Cliffs.  He drove us around the area, showing us the million dollar homes they are building in the development.  He says they own 8,000 acres over 7 mountains.  The homes were stunning and very large.  I guess that’s the new move now – BIG.  And there are lots of people with lots of money today.  Where do all these millionaires come from?
After driving around to look at all the beautiful houses, we went to the Cliffs Bar & Restaurant for lunch.  Travis was a little worried they might have a dress code but we didn’t get turned away.  We sat out on the patio and enjoyed an excellent meal.
We said goodbye then drove the hour and a half back to the campground.  Along the way, we stopped to get fuel and shop at Ingles.
2023 Nov 12 (Sun) – We met Travis and the boys at Texas Roadhouse for lunch (Sam was working).  After lunch, we went to a playground then the Kroc Center where Hudson had basketball practice.  Noah and Lincoln swam in the pool.  I watched the swimmers and Paul watched the ball player.
When done, we drove to The Cliffs Chapel at Glassy Mountain.  It was a long drive up the mountain but the view was spectacular.  It was a lovely chapel with lots of glass to look out on the surrounding vista.  There was also a veterans memorial nearby.  It was a beautiful location.
We drove down the mountain and picked up pizza for dinner.  We all enjoyed a meal together.  Then we returned to the campground.
2023 Nov 11 (Sat) – The campground had coffee and donuts for the veterans in the campground this morning.  That was very nice.
We drove to the Wade Hampton Lanes this morning to see Noah play in a bowling tournament.  We also played a game.  It took us an hour and we only completed 9 frames.  Playing with little guys is so time consuming (Lincoln, age 4; and Hudson, age 8).  We also ran back and forth between our lane and Noah’s so we could watch him play.
After bowling, we drove to the soccer field where Travis & Samantha were picking up a medal for Hudson.  His soccer team came in third this season.  We sat for a while so Hudson could kick the ball around with some friends, then went into the Kroc Community Center.  The center was built and donated by Ray Kroc and his wife.  Kroc owned McDonalds and was very philanthropic.  After he died, his wife, Joan, gave millions to the Salvation Army to build 26 Kroc centers round the country.  The center had a huge Olympic sized pool, a water slide, a children’s area, and a hot tub.  There was a room with exercise equipment and a spin class area.
The next stop was at the American Legion War Museum.  It was a small museum chocked full of memorabilia and artifacts from the various wars.  The boys were very interested in the displays and asked lots of questions.  A docent got hold of Sam and talked her ear off.
We returned to the house where Sam prepared a delicious dinner for us all.  Then we played games until it was time to leave.  It was a very full day.
2023 Nov 10 (Fri) – Noah’s school was having activities in honor of veterans today. We drove to his school, Sevier Middle School, to arrive at 8:30 a.m.  I spoke to students in two classes; one was Noah’s 5th grade class and the other was a 7th grade class.  The 7th graders were a lot more vocal with questions than Noah’s class.  The all the veterans (of which there were many of us) walked down to the auditorium where we entered amidst thunderous applause.  All the students and faculty were standing and clapping for a good ten minutes while we filed in and took our seats.  The ceremony was phenomenal and very humbling.  Then we all walked down to the library where they had a luncheon set up for us.  It was quite a spread.
At 4:30 p.m. we picked up Chick-Fil-A (couldn’t find KFC) and went to Travis’ house for dinner.  The boys were glad to see us and we them.  After dinner, we played games and visited for a while.
2023 Nov 9 (Thu) – We packed up and left Greensboro, NC, at 9:00 a.m.  It was a four and a half hour drive to Fountain Inn, SC.  We are camped at Shibby RV Living.  It is a very basic campground.  Four rows of RVs line the campground with no trees.  We think it might have been a farm at one time.

How to connect people and architecture with your Lumion 3D animations
Property advertising agency, TEN OVER MEDIA, recently won two creative advertising awards with their Lumion videos. Creative Director Mathieu Anfosso sat down with the Lumion team to discuss how he and his twin brother implement a people-first design philosophy and bring out the emotion in property animations.
Tumblr media
It was their first animation together, and when twin brothers Remi and Mathieu Anfosso were discussing strategies for how to best show a building, they came across an interesting insight.
“Dude, they all look the same,” said Remi Anfosso, a young film director with a successful background in making videos for the film and TV industry.
“They're completely different! What are you talking about?" responded Mathieu, Creative Director of TEN OVER MEDIA.
Remi shook his head. “To everyone involved in the project, and especially the architects and clients, it may look different. But to the general public, it looks the same.”
This brief conversation between Mathieu and Remi would go on to form their ideas about communicating architecture and why so many 3D animations seem to fall flat.

“Emotion is really missing from 3D marketing videos,” Remi stated on the TEN OVER MEDIA website, “and it is the one thing the audience is interested in.”
From specific shots meant to incite memories to overall themes designed to immerse viewers into a story-driven, emotional world, the entire team at TEN OVER MEDIA have made it a point to put people and personal experience at the heart of architectural animations. The goal is to help audiences connect with property on a close, personal level. When the property is finally built, they hope a person will already feel at home; they hope people will already know what it feels like to enter the space.

“Carolina Pines - There’s Room At The Pines,” by TEN OVER MEDIA.
As Mathieu explains, “That’s how we know we’ve hit the mark.”
The team at TEN OVER MEDIA has been producing animations of RV resorts, hotels, resorts, ranches and more, and just this year, the team won two 2019 Muse Creative Awards for their River Run (Platinum Award) and Carolina Pines (Silver Award) projects.
Tumblr media
In this blog post, we sat down with Mathieu to discuss TEN OVER MEDIA’s approach to property animation, and how the brothers’ design philosophies have played a significant role in winning both clients as well as the hearts of audiences.
River Run and Carolina Pines: two award-winning videos by TEN OVER MEDIA
With Mathieu as Creative Director and Remi as the Film Director, along with the rest of their team, TEN OVER MEDIA has recently won two 2019 Muse Creative Awards for their recent videos. You can watch the videos below.

“Design like you give a damn”
When approaching projects like Carolina Pines and River Run, Mathieu said that the entire process was built off of one company core value — “design like you give a damn.”
According to Mathieu, this is an overriding theme guiding each project from the first client meeting to the moment the videos are rendered in Lumion. “To us, average is unacceptable. Questioning the status quo, pushing boundaries and making a positive impact are part of our standard process.” This includes not only the way the team works but the impact they hope a video will have.
Tumblr media
RVs at Carolina Pines, by TEN OVER MEDIA.
“You can produce something and be really proud of it, but it might not have the impact you were hoping for. It can raise eyebrows, it can be any kind of thing, but what’s important to us at TEN OVER MEDIA is really understanding our audience and who we’re talking to. What’s important is to put our egos aside.”
In the Carolina Pines video, for example, the team started off with a lot of material and some general concepts. Right from the start, Mathieu and Remi were discussing how they could integrate some of the concepts.
“One of the main concepts was our goal to create memories that don’t exist yet. We wanted something for everyone that's both nostalgic and fresh. We wanted the property to feel contemporary, upscale, active, charming and a getaway from the sounds of the city.”
All in all, Mathieu said, they wanted something fun to watch. One clear example of these ideas — the philosophy of “design like you give a damn” — was evident during the pool scene of the Carolina Pines video.
vimeo
Carolina Pines - Dive Into the Experience, by TEN OVER MEDIA.
“You're in the pool and it's hot out. You dive into the water, and when you get out, what are you going to do to feel refreshed? You'll go back to your lounge chair and have a sip of your drink with an ‘Ahhh’ feeling. That is what we were trying to show: dive in, sit back, relax and have a good time.”
Especially in property marketing, well-designed videos can be highly effective in showing experiences and connecting with audiences over how they will interact with a building or space. Details such as the swimming pool, the brunch, the towel over the chair and many others, these are all things that can transport a person to the property and show them the type of person they’ll be when they stay there.
And according to Mathieu, “These are the kinds of things that are going to make you remember the property in the end.”
“Keeping it real” — Translating client needs into beautiful animations
In addition to implementing emotional concepts into their Lumion animations, the team at TEN OVER MEDIA also values the idea of “keeping it real.” For Mathieu, this means being authentic to one’s self and with colleagues, clients, contractors and all of the other individuals that must come together when designing and communicating a property.
Tumblr media
Front facade of Carolina Pines, by TEN OVER MEDIA.
“When we go on a site visit and meet with the clients,” Mathieu said. “We aim to understand not only the property and the client’s goals, but also the people and where they're coming from. From there, we can build a meaningful relationship that sometimes lasts over a few years. It's probably what we're most proud of.”
In the making of the Carolina Pines video, for instance, Mathieu and Remi flew out to South Carolina to meet with the client. At the time, Remi was on a one-year vegan diet and the client casually mentioned how her daughter was on the very same diet. From this, Mathieu found an opportunity to turn an awkward, business-like introduction into a casual conversation, and, as Mathieu said, “It unlocked something in our conversation.”
From that moment on, their interactions took on a friendly air.
“We were walking around the property, discussing these vegan diets, and all of a sudden the client started talking about life in South Carolina. She mentioned how the folks there are all about their weekend brunches. It’s all about hosting others. The setup. The typical table fabric, and all that stuff, and, you know, we saw a good opportunity to translate that into the video. Now, we have a short brunch setup and scene in the video, and that was an inspiration we got on site.”
vimeo
Carolina Pines RV Resort - A Touch of Upscale and Totally Down Home, by TEN OVER MEDIA.
It is these types of conversations that Mathieu says will have never come up in an email conversation, but it does come up on an informal or casual site visit. “The more casual a conversation becomes,” he said, “the easier it is for the client to talk openly about his/her vision.”
You can see this same idea in the River Run video. Mathieu mentioned that when the TEN OVER MEDIA team was in Colorado on the River Run site visit, the client started talking about how she wanted the video to show scenes reminiscent of Christmastime photographs that sit above a warm fireplace. “This was a huge, huge clue that helped us move the video in the right direction.
"Leave the world better than we found it”
According to Mathieu, every piece of architecture has two lives: one life in the imagination (before it’s built) and a second life in reality (after it’s built). With a philosophy of “leaving the world better than we found it,” the TEN OVER MEDIA team strives to use staging, props, setup, lighting and more to make the imagined building as real as it can be.
“And this wouldn’t be possible without Lumion,” Mathieu said. “Having my brother on board as a film director, Lumion helps build an entire world in 3D. You've seen Carolina Pines — we were able to build a scene with tens of thousands of trees, and the overview shots only show half of the project. I'll be sitting with a big screen next to my brother and we're walking the property in Lumion just like we're walking the real property, and that's when he'll get his ideas so that we can start shooting.”
Tumblr media
Birds-eye-view of the River Run project in Colorado, by TEN OVER MEDIA.
“When we start shooting, you never know how a video clip feels until we put it into the editing draft to see if it's really working. At low resolution, exporting that shot takes one minute. We're able to try a shot, export it in a minute, put it into the editing software and check if it's working for the whole video, all in 5 minutes. That's unheard of. It's allowing us to go so much faster.”
“With Lumion, everything is possible,” he continued. “If you can do it in real life, you can do it in Lumion. And that's something we do every day. When we are shooting something with my brother as the film director, we really try to mimic the movements you would do on a movie set. So, if we're doing a crane shot, for example, we can make those crane movements and vibrations in Lumion. We're able to recreate it using all of the tools that Lumion provides. We did some green screening for Carolina Pines, and while Lumion doesn't provide green screening, there are tips and tricks within Lumion that allows you to do that.”
Tumblr media

“If you can do it in real life, you can most likely do it Lumion, and if you can't do it in real life, you can most likely do it in Lumion.”
Thanks to Mathieu Anfosso and the entire TEN OVER MEDIA team for the interview!

I can not say it enough…this season has FLOWN by. We are down to the last few weeks now. They have signed the lease for our site for next year, so it looks like we are “in.” The last month has been filled with softball games and activities. Our friends, that we made in Durango, spent a month here in the Phoenix area and we hiked with them (Photo 2), ate Whataburger with them twice and played pickleball. It was so nice having them here. We got free tickets to see to the Barleen’s show. For those of you familiar with Branson, Barleen’s is similar to a Branson show. We went to their variety show and it was so well done. There was some serious talent on the stage. They also serve a full meal for their guests. We lucked into some complimentary tickets and saved ourselves $84. Then we got free tickets to an Alabama tribute show at another area park. It was really well done. We have also been to John Denver and Journey tribute shows (worked those show for free attendance.). We weren’t super impressed with the quality of the shows we worked, but at least we didn’t pay money for them. This week we have a Volunteer Appreciation Party and a Bingo event to help with. After that, things will be fairly slow around here.
My niece has a good team this season but they don’t seem to be improving much. We had high hopes for them after the first game or two, but they have lost several games they should have won. Our belief is it’s the coaches. But we have had so much fun going to their games and haven’t missed any that were drivable. We only have 2 more days of games left before we leave. Hate to miss so many games, but they do have a way to listen to the games that we will have to take advantage of.
Aspen officially turned 17 the other day. We have had days when we thought it was time and then he bounces back, and we know it's not time yet. It’s really hard being in this situation. One day at a time, I guess.
It appears the RV leg that was replaced is still slipping slightly. Steve is now wondering if it’s the other leg (somehow they are connected) causing the problem. We aren’t too worried about this since it’s such a slow slippage, but I sure hope the slide issue is fixed. I’m not feeling super confident right now.
We spent a couple of weekends working on our summer plans. So glad the gas prices have skyrocketed. Ha! As mentioned before, we will stop in Amarillo for doctor appointments, then in Colorado to check out our trees. Then on to Minnesota for 3 months to work again at DigiKey starting in May. Then let the fun begin. Thanks to some “experts,” we have planned our first 2 weeks touring the UP (Upper Peninsula-Michigan). It was never on my radar until a high school friend went and shared her photos on Facebook. Then there are people at our resort who are from that area, so we decided to go there first. I have always wanted to go to Mackinac Island so our UP trip will end with a stop there. It has been a bit interesting finding campgrounds for our trip. There aren’t many full hookup type of RV parks. There are a lot of county parks and state parks that only have electric. We don’t mind electric only sites for stays of a night or 2, but 5 nights is a different story. From there we will head south to Tennessee. We will spend around 9 days around Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. We want to do the touristy thing there for a few days. Then we are going north a few miles where it’s more affordable over the Labor Day holiday. After that, we have a month stay planned in North Carolina in the Smoky Mountains. Hopefully there we can make some day trips and do a lot of hiking. I definitely plan to head to Asheville to tour Biltmore. It’s been on my bucket list for a long time. (Trip plan-Photo 1)After all that fun, we will need to start our way back to Arizona. We plan to stop in Missouri and Amarillo on our way back. This is all new to us. We tried to plan a 2-week trip around Utah but COVID hit and we never got to do that. This is our first time to travel around like this in our RV. I can’t wait!
