Background: Born in Beacon Hills, Riley was born to a witch mother and werecoyote father. The three were best friends until Riley’s parents died in a car accident and she had to go into foster care because her uncle was too young to take care of her. For years she was in and out of foster homes, some worse than others. During this time she learned how to cook and started attending judo classes for protection, as she sternly refused to use any of her powers on humans. Eventually Riley grew tired of the constantly changing homes and started running away and living in several different homeless encampments. She couldn’t fathom why her uncle never came to get her, and was saddened that everyone else seemed to have forgotten about her. Then Marlow surprisingly comes to take her home and Riley is overjoyed. She joins in on the fight against the Dread Doctors and Sebastian Valet, and meets her uncle once more. Then Sebastian kills her and she resurrects without her werecoyote side. Without a siginificant part of her, and with hunters coming to kill every supernatural in the world, Riley must face not only her own demons, but her traumatic past.

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

Basic Story: Three World War II veterans come home and struggle to adjust to civilian life.

Fan Thoughts: Coming in with the knowledge that this film won seven academy awards, including Best Picture, set high expectations for this film.  The Best Years of Our Lives is unusually long for a film from 1946, clocking in at two hours and fifty two minutes long, and while it does feel a bit long at times there is enough going on that it makes the best of its’ long runtime.  Three veterans from different branches of different ranks come home and find they struggle in different ways to adjust to life at home.  Homer Parrish is the most significant character for a number of reasons; played by non-actor and actual veteran Harold Russell who lost his hands in an explosion caused by a faulty fuse and lost both his hands, using two hooks in their place.  In the film, while he is comfortable with his fellow veterans, he begins to lose confidence as his friends and family treat him differently because of his disability, excluding his fiancée Wilma who supports him and refuses to let him push her away.  Al Stephenson is the oldest of the three returning home, with a wife and teenage children waiting for him, while seemingly returning to his old life easily, he begins drinking heavily which is not missed by his wife.  The last of the three, Fred Derry, was originally a soda jerk living in a poorer part of town before the war, but his situation improved during the war as he attained the rank of Captain in the USAAF; his wife from a short courtship enjoyed his Army pay and having an airman on her arm and their marriage begins to fall apart when he comes home and cannot find a job better than soda jerk again.  Not only do the stories being told in this film feel real for their content, the execution in their telling by the actors and the direction is excellent; Harold Russell was given an honorary Academy Award for his participation as a non-actor, then also won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.  While long, this film covers a topic that was rarely put on film in the 1940s, and does it well with nuance and understanding for each character and is absolutely with taking the time to watch!

William Hurt in Altered States (Ken Russell, 1980)

In theory, choosing Ken Russell to direct Paddy Chayefsky's screenplay based on his novel, an updating of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to the psychedelic era, had some potential. Russell is known for his flamboyant visuals and Chayefsky for his talky screenplays like the Oscar-winning Marty (Delbert Mann, 1955), The Hospital (Arthur Hiller, 1971), and Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976). Perhaps the visuals would moderate the verbosity, or vice versa. Unfortunately, Altered States wound up something of a mess -- a watchable mess, but still not a satisfying film. Chayefsky was so upset with the movie he took his name off the credits and substituted a pseudonym, Sidney Aaron. But the problem is inherent in the premise: that a potion can alter not only the mental state of the person who takes it but also the physical state -- that matter itself, the human body, can be changed by drinking a mixture of blood and hallucinogenic mushrooms. It's the stuff of fairy tales, not science. So when Dr. Jessup (William Hurt in his film debut), a respected physician researching the causes of schizophrenia, drinks the concoction, he reverts to his primordial self: a small, aggressive carnivorous simian. Good enough for a horror-movie setup, but not quite what Chayefsky had in mind when he wrote lines like these: "It is the Self, the individual mind, that contains immortality and ultimate truth....  Ever since we dispensed with God we've got nothing but ourselves to explain this meaningless horror of life." Chayefsky's existential conundrums go missing in a welter of special effects. And ultimately, the film collapses in bathos, with a plot resolution in which love conquers all after Jessup's experiments go calamitously awry. Hurt and Blair Brown as Jessup's wife do what they can with the material, giving controlled performances, but Russell, that connoisseur of excess, lets Charles Haid overplay his role as Dr. Parrish, the supposed skeptic about Jessup's research who seems like a nutcase himself.

The ultimate social paralysis of off-the-map towns creates an atmosphere of familiarity and safety for the ages-old residents, those whose families witnessed the first dirt roads that carved through the once much denser forest. The streets, lamp-less and haunted in the night, have been memorized and seldom see confused tourists. These homes are riddled with old wood and cryptic small-town stories. The roads themselves are paved with the hard work of their native people. Places like this, they resist change. All here must adhere to the same pattern of life that has played out in these homes for generations before them.

But what happens when you defy the path laid out before you? Anboro doesn’t take kindly to change, and Carmen, Connor, and Russel soon find out what happens when you become strange to a town of stagnation.

Weeks after their high school graduation, they notice a missing neighbor, a kid around their age. They approach the family of this missing boy, but when our three protagonists sneak his name, a look of confusion spreads over the family’s faces. No such boy had ever existed.

Suspecting foul play, these three friends do their own research into the disappearance. But soon they find out that no one can remember the missing boy. The town swallowed him.

Not long after, another goes missing, a girl who worked alongside Russel in the town’s local grocery store. When he checks the girl’s schedule to see if today was her day off, he finds that her name is missing from the rosters. She, too, had been swallowed into obscurity. 

And after her, the cycle continued. Every week or so, someone else would disappear, but the only ones who remembered them were Carmen, Connor, and Russel. Even the pictures that once displayed the faces of their friends and peers were missing the faces of those lost to memory. One family dwindled one by one, losing kids, losing a husband, and finally, losing the mother, and once she had stepped into the past, the house was replaced with trees and flowers, with no record that it ever existed.

Scared, confused, and wondering if they would be next, three young adults must try to figure out where their townsfolk had disappeared to, and if they can stop the spread of these losses. Can they find the missing people? Can they stop the disappearances? Or will they be eaten away by the town like everyone else?
