Images from Trent Kelley’s “Hidden in the Open: Photographic Essay of Afro American Male Affections”.

The flickr page holds ~200 photographs from the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Kelley writes on his page that: “Some of these images are sure to be gay and others may not. The end result is speculative at best for want in applying a label. Not every gesture articulated between men was an indication of male to male intimacies. Assuredly, what all photographs in this book have in common are signs of Afro American male affection and love that were recorded for posterity without fear and shame.”

RuPaul and Michelle pay tribute to The Vivienne at DragCon UK

RuPaul has paid heartfelt tribute to The Vivienne at DragCon UK this weekend, following the drag performer’s tragic death.

The inaugural Drag Race UK winner’s team announced on January 5 that the performer – whose real name was James Lee Williams – had passed away at the age of 32.

Tributes flooded in from shocked and heartbroken Drag Race queens and fans all over the world. RuPaul shared an Instagram post “with a broken heart” mourning the “incredibly talented queen and lovely human being”.

Now at the very start of this weekend’s DragCon UK, RuPaul gave another heartfelt tribute to The Vivienne.

Ru joined Michelle Visage – who wore a shirt with The Vivienne’s name on it – and makeup artist Raven. The trio were all dressed in black as they launched the convention in London.

“We are here to celebrate life, to celebrate love and to spread it around,” Ru said.

“We are here to start these festivities, but before we do that, we want to focus on love. And we’re going to remember our dear The Vivienne, with love and life. That’s what she was all about.”

Ru continued, “She would love for you to live your lives and to be free and to have a lot of fun and to spread it around, isn’t that right?”

‘We thank The Vivienne for all you’ve given us’

The queens from Drag Race UK also gathered on stage for their official introduction for a tribute to their late sister.

“We want to take this moment to thank The Vivienne for all that you’ve given us,” an announcer said as the queens gathered on stage.

“Let this weekend be a celebration of your life, love, and devotion to the art of drag. We love you.”
