(it's hard to type cause i'm really cold and also sleep deprived hungry and haven't had enough water so I might need to clarify my points later if this doesn't make any sense:)

GUYS IVE HAD SOME THOUGHTS

I never really read into the line "it'd go to hell if it were left up to me" cause I always saw it as more of a "Haha you're so organized like imagine me trying to do that haha" but no it's a "If something happens to you I cannot do it. I am not capable of taking care of Pony like you are, if you give up now we are all screwed because I cannot handle everything like you. We NEED you here"

Imagine how terrified Soda was during RITFR, Darry was going on about leaving them behind and Ponyboy was riling him up. Soda was scared out his mind because of Darry had actually decided to leave he would not be able to take care of Ponyboy. He sees Darry go to work before sunrise and get back past midnight and still barely be able to pay bills. During Throwing In The Towel he finally voices those fears and that's all of "you think that I don't see it'd go to hell if it was left up to me and I don't know what we would do if you were not around the one to keep the ship afloat when it's going down darryl I need you and anyone can see that pony does too" 

Soda may have dropped out of school and have a job but he is still a kid who can't even imagine taking on all Darry has since their parents death.

there's a train near where i live and every time i hear the train horn and the rattling of the tracks i can't help but think of a certain 17 year old boy with a leather jacket, standing on those tracks, screaming his violent, young heart out to the death of the only person he ever loved.

i also can't help but think about a particular dark and rainy night when car heading home after a tiresome but laughter-filled day, chocolate frosting from the nearby bakery in hand, crossed those very same tracks and never made it home.

i realize now, how in the end, each of times a life was taken on those tracks, more than what we see was killed.
