I mainly spent the rest of 2022 reblogging a lot of wonderful rumbelle stuff, but I did make a few video edits, and I’m quite proud of them.

Fluff: Reunion

As often separated by circumstance as they are together, Belle and Rumple suffered through the ups and downs of being apart. Sometimes as the result of a curse, their own dysfunction, or sometimes even death itself, their separation wounds our Rumbelle hearts, so of course it stands to reason that their ultimate reunions - of which there are many - always bring relief and joy to Rumbellers all around.

I wish we could have Rumbelle Big Bang again

I’ve been thinking about hosting another one. Not anytime soon, because I’m still wrapping up the Showdown and I want to take a break from moderator duties. But… maybe?

My biggest concern is whether we have enough people still active in the fandom to justify a Big Bang. Artists, in particular, are usually in short supply for Bang events.

Hello! I found you through your Golden Cuffs AO3 fanfic (currently reading through Golden Rings), and you have brought back my love for both OUaT and Rumbelle! It’s been a while since I got inspired like this, so first thank you! Since TMI Tuesday is coming up I thought I’d submit my two questions (one here, one in another ask): One, is there any sort of Fandom group for OUaT or Rumbelle? I wasn’t sure how active a fandom there was, but if there was still something I would love to know!

Hello! Welcome to the fandom! I know that you already did the most important part of any Rumbelle initiation and asked Stragg for The Thing. That's how we learn about new Rumbellers. Hopefully, you've gotten a hearty welcome.

I've heard rumors of fandom discords for Rumbelle, but I'm not a part of them myself. We are definitely here on Tumblr.

It's hard to be part of a fandom for a show that isn't running anymore (though it's also nice because we don't have to care about canon anymore.) When a network show is running, you have these bursts of activity every week when there's a new episode. It's easier for fans to come together at the same time and place. Now that people are watching OUAT on streaming, fan activity is more of a steady drip than a full firehose.

This is why it's always so fun to participate in events. Right now the @rumbelleshowdown is in its second round of competition. (You can read all the fics right now! And vote on which ones you think are the best!) Hard to say if they'll be much of a presence at the Monsterfucker's Ball in October (same with Rumbelle Christmas in July.) But as far as I know the Rumbelle Secret Santa is still going strong. That's my favorite way to meet new people and get new fics.

And of course, the most important rule of any fandom is to be yourself and have fun. We're a level-headed, understanding, very horny bunch here in Rumbelle. I hope you have a good time!

Hey! So, what's a Big Bang?

So glad you asked!

I’m on mobile, so this will be a brief explanation. A Big Bang is a fandom challenge that pairs writers with artists. Each story will have art, and each piece of art will have a story. It’s supposed to be a collaborative process, with the goal that art and fic will complement each other.

Here’s a post from the last Big Bang, that includes links to the pages we created last time to help everyone out.

(We being myself and my co-mod. They’ve since become inactive in Rumbelle fandom.)

Sign ups are NOT open for RBB 2024. As I said, that’s just an old post. If the RBB happens again, the process, rules, and sign-up sheet will look very similar.

Another useful piece of info, is that there are two ways to run a Bang. We can write the fic first, then art is created to complement the existing story. Or we can create art first, and the writers use the art as their prompt and write a story to complement the art. When the art is created first, that’s called a Reverse Big Bang.

TMI Tuesday

I’ve typed and deleted about five first sentences to this post before deciding I don’t want to post about that. Instead I’m gonna do what I do best and lean on fandom for escapism.

So, as you might have seen, I posted two fic chapters last week: one for “Lonely Soul, Ocean Soul,” my Barbgrove selkie fic; and the other for “The Black Swan,” my Rumbelle Swan Lake AU. Both of those fics are one epilogue away from completion, proving that I can, in fact, finish a thing. It just doesn’t happen often.

Two items are up next: the next chapter of “One More Time, Steal My Breath,” my Hellcheer kinkfic; and a complete Stranger Things fix-it, tentatively titled “A Strange Twist of Fate.” The former is… rough. I wrote most of it at the height of my sleep deprivation, so it’s… messy. Honestly it would probably be better to scrap the chapter and start over, but I know myself; after spending months on the damn thing, if I scrap it now, I’ll get discouraged and never get around to rewriting it. So if this chapter seems weaker than the rest, keep in mind that that’s out of necessity.

As for the new fic, I have no clue if I’m doing it “right.” I’ve neither read nor written a fix-it fic before, so I don’t know how they traditionally go. I refuse to rewrite each and every scene because that sounds boring as shit. So this will basically be an author’s note containing a list of canon events I kept, followed by whatever altered scenes tickle my fancy. If it’s incoherent and inconsistent… well, then I know I’m emulating the Duffers well.

Oh - and before anyone wonders whether I’m burning myself out again, I’m (probably) not! Three of these four chapters were already mostly done, which is why I’m able to crank so many out so fast. Once those are done, it’ll probably be another few weeks til my next update.

Well, it's that time of year again. What time of year, you say? Oh, hello there, Rumbelle newbies, I see you there, busily working away on filling out the ballot for the Chipped Cup Awards and flailing happily if some of your fics were nominated. Congratulations, and good, you should be in the right mood.

This is a fairy tale fandom, so let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, in the early times of the fandom, some of the Rumbelle writers looked at each other and said "Let's make all the Rumbellers cry". This challenge was taken up, and the Rumbelle War commenced, in which works of great angst and darkness were written. Readers cried and cursed the writers, who cackled evilly as they collected the broken hearts which were flung at their feet, and tucked them away in boxes and bags and old wooden card catalog drawers (because Rumbellers are big on libraries).

But because there must be light to balance the darkness, a new event was created -- FLUFFAPALOOZA.

Fluffapalooza is when you write and draw and gif the fluffiest fics/art/scenes you can think of. Haven't got the time or spoons to do any of that but you've got ideas? Post them as prompts, or headcanons! Or if you want a challenge, make a post announcing that you want to play "Fluffify this!" and invite people to send you angsty-sounding prompts in the form of sentence starters, which you will then sneer at and say "Not today! Today is for fluff!" and write a little prompt fill in which you turn that prompt into something fluffy. (See an example here.) Or maybe you just want to rhapsodise about Rumbelle and talk about their chemistry, or what the ship means to you and how it affected your life. Maybe you want to reminisce about how we started adding silly Rumbelle captions to every picture of a croc or gator or lizard that crossed our dashes. Anything goes! Erm honestly if anything I'm surprised Canon Compliant is so many. Canon divergence being top is totally on brand (I mean what is fic, if not fix-it in some form?). Not surprised the event tag is there but obviously that belongs to past!Me and is no longer relevant.

I think if anything this shows I don't make a whole lot of use out of the 'additional tags' function.

Ok I'm going to click on 'canon compliant'. Oh. Oh. Yeeeeah that makes more sense. My related tag is "you can't prove it's not".

15) What’s your favorite AU that you’ve written? For the longest time my answer would have been Between Two Fires. The sci-fi espionage oneshot. One day a seed of that will be in an original novel. But that was so long ago now, and not my fandom anymore. Trouble is I haven't written any really AU AU's in any of my current fandoms. It's all been canon divergence or canon adjacent. Which is still kinda AU I guess but I have to be honest when I hear the term "AU" I'm thinking something quite removed from their ordinary world.

I am inordinately fond of and the Sins of Atlantis. My Librarians/Sanctuary crossover. Given that the bulk of the fic takes place in an alternate present day, I think that's the closest I have come. Even if leaving aside the crossover elements, and the Stargate backstory I gave the library, it's still mostly canon. Honestly this is probably the most self-indulgent fic I have ever written - it's certainly the longest! (well unless I count my original novels lol). I basically wrote this for an audience of one. I hoped someone else would enjoy it obviously but I still enjoy it immensely, however egotistical that is to admit. It's got fun things in.

23) What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to? Oh so many. First thing that comes to mind is a Bodyguard AU. When I first rolled this concept around in my head I liked it so much I came up with 3 or 4 variations, and then wondered if I should make it a series, and so it lives on my "future novel universe" list.

I don't think I've written any of the 'fakes' either - fake dating, fake marriage, fake divorce etc. But they would all be fun.

Oh! Wait I did kinda do fake marriage once. It was arranged and they agreed to be partners in science rather than the bedroom. It wasn't that well written as I did a lot of setup for what was basically PWP, and then I got tired about it being so long and skipped the best part (the mutual pining). It was for an event and to be honest I liked the world building setup/part way more than the shoehorned in "make this fit the event" smut. Old fandom though so I won't rework it.

Each year, from among the Rumbelle community, we find an individual who, either by creating or doing something spectacular in the fandom, stands out above the crowd. Perhaps they made people feel welcome, or organized events. It may be that they contributed something unique, never before seen or experienced in the Rumbelle fandom, or they, in some way, embodied the fandom as a whole. Each of this years’ nominees have met these criteria in spades, and for that they deserve our recognition, a place in the Rumbelle ‘Hall of Fame; the fandom’s congratulations and our respect for the outstanding contribution they have made to our community.

Hey rumbelle fam,

Just putting it out there that the site will be down for probably the foreseeable future?

This is for two (and a half?) reasons:

1) It was built on a tech stack that is now pretty outdated, and it seems the queries that actually make the site work are no longer returning the data they need to. So... I would need to do some poking around under the hood to see what exactly is causing the problem and time has become a pretty scarce resource for me lately

2) Uh... Hosting is getting quite expensive 🥲 I've been hosting the site on the same webspace I host my professional portfolio site on, so it hadn't been an issue, but my portfolio site is also in need of a massive redesign/rebuild that I won't be getting to any time soon, so it's really not worth paying what it costs to keep the lights on there either, especially given I'm not actively looking for work atm (bc I'm currently working full-time at a pretty great company 😊)

2.5) The amount of fanworks we create has sadly calmed down a LOT since the show ended, so there doesn't seem to be as much of a need for the site as there was 2-3 years ago? (As much as I would love to keep it up for posterity or whatever)

That being said, I am looking into other tech stacks and less costly hosting solutions, and the ideal outcome is that I'll be able to migrate everything and have it back up in a month or two. But like I said, time is precious and I can't guarantee anything
