Yeah I know this is a fandom blog, but look, there can be a tea fandom too!
Bit of a follow-up to this post... These are all black teas. The differences in appearance, flavour, and preparation are still enormous!
Some details on the teas are below the cut if you're interested.
Top centre: Autumn 2021 Experimental Black #1 from Farmerleaf. Origin is Jingmai in China. The taste is floral, sweet, and very smooth. If you brew it gongfu style it will last for 8+ steeps.
Top left: Rukeri Black from Rakkasan Tea Company. Origin is Rukeri Valley in Rwanda. The taste is bitter but also a bit like honey. Because of the way it's processed (it's rolled with wooden rollers), it steeps best 'Western style' (with more water and time and less tea than gongfu style).
Bottom left: Jinggu 'Da Jin Ya' Camellia Taliensis (Spring harvest) from Yunnan Sourcing. Origin is the village of Yang Ta village Jinggu, China. It tastes something like dried apricots. This is from a close relative of the usual tea plant (camellia sinensis).
Bottom right: Classic Laoshan Black Tea (May harvest) from Yunnan Sourcing. Origin is the village of Laoshan in Shandong, China. The taste is chocolatey. While you can brew this gongfu style, I think it's best steeped in a mug.
Top right: Puttabong Darjeeling 2nd Flush Black Tea (May harvest) from Yatra Tea Company. Origin is Puttabong Estate in Darjeeling, India. It has a grapey taste - not grape flavour but like actual grapes. The leaves are more broken than the Chinese teas in this selection, since it was probably not intended for gongfu brewing, but it's still mainly whole leaves.

Online Tea Shops Worth a Look
In recent years the in person shopping experience has been on a steady downfall for all types of retail, and tea is no exception. A few years back Teavana closed it doors (R.I.P.), and recently due to the pandemic DavidsTea shut down the mass majority of their stores as well. Other shops such as Citizen Tea took a shot at opening physical locations, but sadly it didn’t work out too well.
So where else can you go for high quality tea?
Well believe it or not when I first got into tea, DavidsTea was just a baby and Teavana was too pricey. So I took to searching the web for online stores. Soon I discovered Tealux (now known as Tealyra). The site has a massive variety of teas of all types and flavors from all over the world, as well as a great selection of tea wares. It was here that I really ventured into the world of tea, ordering 10, 20, 30 samples at a time. They carry everything from traditional teas, to high end pure teas, to tasty blends. And if you sign up for their mailing list they often send out 25% off coupons.
If your new to tea or you want to expand your horizons a bit this is the place to go. I promise you will not be disappointed. However with all that said, it isn’t the only great online shop to visit for amazing teas. Below is a short list of online retailers I frequent, and I’ve even put in a recommendation or two for each site.
Tealyra.ca
Recommendations: White Coconut Dream White Tea, Yunnan Golden Monkey Imperial
Captialtea.com (Canadian)
Recommendations: Rwanda Rukeri Black Tea, Jaipur Assam (when in stock)
Citizentea.com (Canadian)
Recommendations: Citrus Mate, Amaretto Cherry Black
Yunnansourcing.com
Recommendations: Imperial Pure Bud Yunnan Black, Imperial Mojiang Golden Bud Yunnan Black

Rwandan White Tea Rukeri⠀ ⠀ In Rwanda, Africa, the very rare White Tea Rukeri is harvested against a backdrop of natural lakes and conservation areas. The spicy-sweet notes in combination with a crystal clear infusion round off the overall impression tastefully. ⠀ ⠀ This tea comes from Rukeri Estate, Rwanda's largest tea estate, located in the northern part of the country in the Kirihara & Cyohoha valley areas. ⠀ Originally, white tea comes from China and is traditionally considered as particularly healthy.⠀ ⠀ White tea is regarded as the world’s noblest tea variety, because for this tea only the unopened buds and the most delicate leaves are harvested in spring.⠀ ⠀ Thanks to especially delicate processing, white tea retains its original mildness and when brewed up, tastes fresh and lightly sweet.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #chai #teafactory #tealover #hillstation #travelblogger #Kirihara #rwanda #photooftheday #teaaddict #landscapephotography #naturelovers #teafarm #Cyohoha #like #wanderlust #landscape #travelrwanda #instagram #visitrwanda #tealeaves #hills #blacktea #incredibleindia #traveldiaries #plantation #rukeri #greenery #beautifuldestinations #love #roadtrip https://www.instagram.com/p/COH9Y2RHz-2/?igshid=ualnlwr2btaq

#248 Darjeeling TGFOP1 Margaret’s Hope (black classic)
PREPARATION: 3 g tea leaves (1 heaping tsp) per 8 oz cup of filtered, boiling water; allow to brew 3–5 minutes
INGREDIENTS: second-flush TGFOP1 from the Himalayas
LEAF: long leaves, ranging from light brown/golden to dark olive hues
INFUSION: dark orangish
AROMA: if you are yearning for classic tea like Grandma used to make, you have found it!
LIQUOR: classic second-flush Darjeeling; pleasant and mellow, with slight floral undertone; light—yet strong enough for a little milk and sugar, or lemon, if desired
#586 Japan Benifuki (black classic)
PREPARATION: 3 g tea leaves (1 heaping tsp) per 8 oz cup of filtered water, boiled and cooled to 90°C/194°F; allow to brew 2–3 minutes
INGREDIENTS: black tea from Japan
LEAF: black leaves that have a slight red hue
INFUSION: dark reddish brown
AROMA: slightly sweet, dark vegetal
LIQUOR: more vegetal than a typical black tea, with a sweetish—almost chocolately parsnip—flavor; no maltiness; smooth and creamy
#301 Rwanda Rukeri OP (green classic)
PREPARATION: 3 g tea leaves (1 heaping tsp) per 8 oz cup of filtered water, boiled and cooled to 80°C/176°F; allow to brew 2–3 minutes
INGREDIENTS: green tea from small farm in Rwanda
LEAF: flat, wiry leaves, spanning light to dark greens
INFUSION: yellowish green, straw
AROMA: initial umami, like Japanese teas, followed by earthiness
LIQUOR: smooth, with a sweet note at the end; as it cools, the classic green astringency develops; this tea falls mid-range between vegetal (like Japanese green teas) and nutty/roasted (like Chinese green teas)
Greet the new year with new teas!
