Mimicus

An OC created for @victoriadallonfan's "Animal Cape Challenge!" As if it were actually a challenge.

Parahuman Ability

Mimicus's Breaker form is basically a humanoid mass of fleshy strands, capable of rapidly deforming itself into almost any shape. Trying to grab or attack it is like doing the same to water; the mass flows around you, any individual strand you try to target splits in two and flows into the others.

Mimicus rarely remains in this form for long. The PRT cannot confirm whether or not her power has an aspect which directly limits how long she can spend in this form; field agents should assume she does not.

While in her Breaker form, Mimicus may attempt to engulf a target. This is universally described as unpleasant; no known incidents have resulted in physical injury, but it has been speculated that Mimicus could use her Breaker form to constrict or asphyxiate field agents.

When leaving her Breaker form, Mimicus may mimic the physical appearance of human she has engulfed, as well as several animals (mostly different breeds of horse). She can mimic both biological features and clothing/equipment, though mimicked objects are connected to her body and often have unusual textures.

Mimicus often mimics some behavior patterns or verbal tics of her target, but does not gain access to their memories. A Stranger or Master element to her power has been speculated, as Mimicus seems unusually capable of diverting attention from suspicious behavior. Mimicus can also mix aspects of different mimicked forms.

Mimicus cannot mimic parahuman abilities. However, she can mimic biology altered by them. Mimicus mimicking Nestor is significantly stronger than the average human, but significantly weaker than the actual Nestor, due to lacking his regenerative and velocikinetic powers.

Trigger event

Ophelia grew up in Rugly, a community too small to be called a town, barely more than a rest stop by the highway, half an hour from the nearest actual town. Everyone in Rugly knew everyone else. Everyone knew something was wrong with Ophelia.

Ophelia had learned to cope with that. She knows how to act normal enough that people usually don't criticize her for doing things wrong. Sometimes she slips up. Mostly she stays quiet. It's the easiest way to avoid making mistakes.

She goes to the town's middle school so she can participate in its drama club. She's a good actor; she has experience. So Ophelia ends up cast as the lead in their fall production.

The week before their first public performance is rough for Ophelia. Her mask slips, people make fun of her for that, the mask slips a little farther. But Ophelia makes sure to go to bed early before the big day, so she should be at 100% again.

The auditorium is packed. Almost everyone from Rugly is in there, surrounded by the other drama kids' friends and families and a few curious locals. Looking at the crowd, Ophelia feels a stab of stage fright. Like so many of her other feelings, she hides it, ignores it. Something to deal with later, alone, if at all.

The play goes well, but that doesn't loosen Ophelia's stage fright. The only thing that scares her more than being seen is being seen as a disruption. As long as she can play her role, she can keep going.

She stumbles over a line. A small stutter; if your friend stuttered like that in a casual conversation, you wouldn't even notice. But Ophelia notices. It strengthens her stage fright. She stumbles over another, more obviously. It's harder to ignore.

One of her neighbors laughs at the gaffe. Ophelia can't hear what he said. It can't be good.

She wants to keep going. She wants to run and hide. She wants to be a good actress. She wants to decompress. She wants to fit in.

But she can't, can she?
