Thoughts of a Suppressor Owner

Suppressors have an illusion among people that aren’t knowledgeable about them, but only know what they’ve seen in the movies. Movies and TV as well as the journalistic media would like for the uninformed individual to believe that a suppressor will make what would usually be something that’s at an ear damaging 150 decibel sound just like blowing through a straw. Of course this is quite dishonest, but it serves to play into their agenda of deeming any and everything firearm related as bad for the citizen. Suppressors are, in reality a tool or accessory that further enhances the use of a firearm by reducing the report to a more tolerable level, but of course most times, depending upon the caliber, hearing protection is still required to minimize damage to a person’s ear. Hunting while using a suppressor is something I’ve done for many years now and could never see going back to hunting without a suppressor.

I got my first suppressor roughly 10 years ago. Not sure where it would lead me, but my first suppressor was an older model rimfire can from Tactical Solutions, the Cascade Ti. This is a non-user serviceable suppressor that’s simple and lightweight. It is full auto rated as well as rated for .17 HMR. Little did I realize, this would be the first of many future suppressor purchases.

A number of years later, I was considering another suppressor purchase, but this time I wanted a solid rifle suppressor, something that was full auto rated, robust and came with a great warranty. Enter Rugged Suppressors. Rugged Suppressors was founded in 2014 and located in Traveler’s Rest in South Carolina. They boast a lifetime warranty and the majority of their suppressors are “belt-fed” rated. They stand behind their products and have amazing customer service. The first suppressor I purchased from them, which is still one of my favorites is their Razor 7.62. It’s a beefy little rifle suppressor that works very well on any host I’ve used it on. Their dual taper lock mounting method is rock solid. I’ve since purchased numerous other Rugged suppressors, their Obsidian 9 and 45 pistol caliber cans, their Radiant 7.62 and their recently released Razor 5.56 which I plan to use on my Brownells exclusive Geissele Super Duty rifle.

Of course, the suppressor isn’t the only item that’s needed for a good suppressor ownership experience. You have to first be able to mount the suppressor. The Rugged suppressors have muzzle devices for mounting the suppressor. They should be properly shimmed, timed and which some sort of thread locker. I prefer using Rockset on my suppressor muzzle devices. For proper timing of muzzle brakes, shims are used. Most muzzle devices these days will come with shims, but the Accu Washer is a precisely designed shim set that’s worth looking into. These can be purchased from Brownells. You should never just use a standard crush washer as it can offset the muzzle alignment and cause a suppressor baffle strike. For checking alignment, there are some specially designed precision alignment rods. I prefer the alignment rods made by Geissele from Brownells. You can purchase welding rods, and I have done this, but they’re no where as accurate as a precision tool such as the alignment rods from Geissele.

Other things to consider is maintenance, cleaning and protection of your suppressor. Suppressors can be made out of different kinda of metal, such as titanium, stainless steel, aluminum…it’s always best to check with the manufacturer for what types of chemicals and cleaning methods are safe to use with your suppressor. Sonic cleaning is very common as well as using bore solvent. Once cleaned, most should require some sort of lubricant to threads and pistons. Rugged recommends white lithium grease on piston assemblies. For protection of my suppressors, Cole-Tac makes some really nice suppressor covers. I leave these covers on even after removing my suppressor just to help protect it from dropping.

In conclusion, suppressor ownership isn’t what we’ve been told it was all those years by the media and people have figured this out as evident by the explosion in suppressor purchases in recent years. The new changes with filing through the e-file system has also made the wait time the shortest it’s been in some time. There’s really not a better time to pick up that first or 10th suppressor. Brownells carry’s a number of suppressors as well as all of the support items I’ve listed. Hopefully someday, suppressor purchases will be just like purchasing a firearm.
