#Archovember Day 1 - Your Choice!
In my ongoing effort to draw all the non-avian dinosaurs we know the colors of, I’ve chosen Anchiornis huxleyi!
The type species for the Anchiornithids (“near birds”), Anchiornis huxleyi was a crow-sized dinosaur living in the Late Jurassic of Liaoning, China. It was relatively common, as hundreds of specimens have been uncovered in this area. But what makes Anchiornis so unique and important is that it was the first Mesozoic dinosaur species to have its entire life appearance be known by man! Having hundreds of well-preserved fossils available allows us to extract a lot of information about not only its size and shape, but its skin, feathers, and even coloration. Anchiornis had long wing feathers on its arms and legs (though its leg feathers were not as long as those of Microraptorians), fluffy downy feathers all over its body, a feathered crest on its head, and feathers covering its feet.
Only two Anchiornis fossils have had their well-preserved melanosomes studied so far. By comparing the structure of these melanosomes to modern birds, paleontologists have been able to infer the life colors of Anchiornis! It had mostly gray and black body feathers and white forewing and hindwing feathers with black tips. Its tail colors remain unknown. The first specimen of Anchiornis to be surveyed for melanosomes also had red or rufous coloring on its crest, as well as rufous speckles on its otherwise black and gray head. However, the second specimen did not have any rufous coloration. This may be due to different preservation of melanosomes, different investigative techniques, the animals in question having regional differences or even being different species/subspecies, the second Anchiornis being younger, or sexual dimorphism.
While Anchiornis had rather large feathered forelimbs, it didn’t seem to have been much of a flier. Unlike the later Microraptorians, its wings were rounded and relatively short compared to other flying dinosaurs, and the flimsy flight feathers overlapped each other to strengthen them. A 2016 study concluded that while juvenile Anchiornis may have been able to use their wings to assist with leaping through the trees, adults were simply too heavy and their wings too small to gain any lift. Instead, it is more likely their wings were used for display. As their legs were long, they may have been adapted for speed, using their wings to aid in aerodynamics as they quickly darted through the underbrush.
Pellets (such as those coughed up by owls) have been found both within and in association with Anchiornis, and contained lizard bones and fish scales. Prey items that could have also been eaten by Anchiornis include insects, arachnids, salamanders, small anurognathids (such as Cascocauda, who we will be visiting later this month) and other small or juvenile pterosaurs, and small cynodonts like Agilodocodon and Juramaia.
Anchiornis lived alongside other Anchiornithids such as Aurornis, Caihong, Eosinopteryx, Pedopenna, Serikornis, Xiaotingia, as well as the Scansoriopterygids Yi, Scansoriopteryx, and Epidexipteryx. It also lived alongside the quilled heterodontosaurid Tianyulong.

Remember to read about the contestants before voting!
Secretary Bird
With big, voluptuous eyelashes, the Secretary Bird lives in Africa. They are known for their long legs, used to strike down snakes, lizards, insects, and other small creatures. Although we often think of them as eating mainly snakes, that is not actually a large part of their diet. It consists mainly of insects. They will strike with 5 times their own body weight, and will sometimes hunt in small groups. Learn More!
Screech Owl
The screech owl, despite its name, does not actually screech. They also have two different types of morphs, that are not considered two different species. There is the grey morph and the rufous morph. Some can be found more in specific areas but they are not considered two different species. They usually mate for life, although sometimes a male will mate with another female, who subsequently forced the first female to leave. However, she does tend to raise both her brood and the brood of the other female. Furthermore, screech owls are known to eat song birds such as starlings. Learn More!

Hello everypony!!
Something that absolutely nobody asked for, but shall receive anyways; Phighters as birds! List is under the cut due to it just being a wall of text, some having explanations provided with my selections. Trust me, there is a LOT of reading; I babble a lot. You've been warned.
Sword as the Passenger Pigeon
I always have Sword's species listed as something that's either extinct or originating from mythology (for example, I have his demon species paired with a Kitsune.) I also just think a pigeon of some sorts is rather befitting for him.
Biografts as Canadian geese
Known as one of the most aggressive geese; they are considered invasive in some areas. I also just found it silly. Prone to changing into a different goose, the spur-winged goose. I haven't fully decided yet.
Skateboard as the Red-breasted (or Rufous-Chested) Swallow
This one is mostly based on it's appearance, however it's swiftness plays into this selection as well, due to their speed being quite well-known amongst this species.
Katana as the Great Horned Owl
Adaptable, silent, and skilled at hunting, I believed that this was a near-perfect fit! That, alongside the fact that it's an owl, the bird that (if I recall correctly) Katana's face mask is based off of. I don't know, I just thought most of the physical characteristics were rather befitting for him.
Banhammer as the Black-chested Buzzard Eagle
Honestly I don't know. I think this one was solely based on appearance. I tragically struggle on finding good facts on these birds. I'm pretty sure they drop their prey in order to incapacitate them though which I find funny for him. I could be wrong abt this fact though ^_^"
Rocket as the Great Eared Nightjar
Honestly I forgot why I chose this for Rocket. I'm pretty sure a friend recommended it and i was just like . "ok"
Slingshot as the Alpine swift
Quick and social! However mostly sticks to the same explanation as the one above. Sorry chat :(
Hyperlaser as the Rough-legged Hawk
A friend talked me into changing Hyperlaser into this one. He gave me the reasons of, and I quote; "good vision, fast as fuck, and people put helmets on them" which i think he was referring to those funny hood things they put on hawks sometimes. Aweosme reasons honestly
Shuriken as the Seagull
Annoying little thief. I don't know why but I could only think of him as a seabird. Maybe it's because of Shurifin. Shrugs my litle shoulders
Medkit as the Chinese Pond Heron (heavily inspired by Caladrius)
Discussed this one with friends, too; we settled on this funny bird because we struggled on agreeing on something for like. thirty minutes. But once I brought this heron up we all jsut kind of like. nodded together in agreement i think. Silly stuff
Boombox as the Violet-green Swallow
Mainly for the colors, but they can also symbolize "good luck or positive change", which I find charming for Boombox and his unending optimism. He lifts the spirits of others! :]
Subspace as the Hooded Pitohui
POISONOUS CORVID POISONOUS CORVID!! It was too perfect. That, and the appearance?? MWA this is THE Subspace bird.
Vinestaff as the Fairy Prion Bird
I wanted to keep her relatively the same as her sibling Shuriken, so she gets to be a seabird, too. Couldn't find many facts on this one, too :( I have a cool design in mind but that will most likely Never actually Get Drawn Out. Same goes for all of these dudes sorry gamers .
If you came this far, thank you for reading my rambling. I need suggestions for npcs and deities; the deities are all mythological birds. we have two listed so far, that being Firebrand as the Firebird, and Ghostwalker as the Pheonix. Zuka is listed as a harpy eagle, but that's very open to change. Open to feedback and/or cool facts on any of these funny selections! :]

Keiji Akaashi: Hogwarts AU
Tumblr media
Keiji Akaashi is a Pureblood wizard that was born on the 5th of December 1982 and started attending Hogwarts on the 1st of September 1984, being sorted into Ravenclaw House.
He has a Walnut wand with a Unicorn Hair core.
His Patronus is a Rufous-legged Owl.
His favorite subject is Ancient Runes and his least favorite subject is Divination.
He was one of the Ravenclaw Prefects of his year, a Chaser from his fifth year onward, and later on Quidditch Captain in his seventh year.
Akaashi is calm and composed most of the time, usually choosing not to show a wide range of emotions. He has a habit of calling people out on the foolish things they do, especially Bokuto, whom he seems to be relatively close with despite their opposing personalities.
Akaashi is blunt with the things he says and often invites himself into the conversation when necessary, throwing in witty comments or responses. He is also quite polite and humble but, this could be due to the fact that he is younger than most of his teammates, as he does have a cheeky side, dubbing Kuroo during one match: "Pain-in-the-ass Kuroo-san."
Akaashi also has a strong analytical side which can be seen whenever he makes split-second decisions on how to save the game from Kuroo's anger towards Slytherin. It took him roughly 0.5 seconds to decide whether or not throwing the ball to Kuroo while he was angry would be worth it or not.
During a match against Gryffindor, Akaashi is shown that he can also suffer from overthinking, and feeling overwhelmed from the pressure he has placed on himself as the setter. It got so bad that he had to be benched in order to clear his head. When he sat down, he had a moment of calm, right before not being able to take the stress and yelling into his hands in an uncharacteristic display of emotions.

Keiji Akaashi: Hogwarts AU
Tumblr media
Keiji Akaashi is a Pureblood wizard that was born on the 5th of December 1978 and started attending Hogwarts on the 1st of September 1990, being sorted into Ravenclaw House.
Coming from a very long line of wizards, Akaashi was pressured to be the perfect son from a very young age which often caused him stress and many anxiety attacks during his first year at Hogwarts.
While he did try to please his family by focusing more on his studies than friends, after a breakdown which was witnessed by his roommate Kenma who invited him to hand out with his friends Kuroo and Bokuto which is what lead the three Ravenclaws and the Hufflepuff to become best friend.
His parents deeply disapproved that he had friends and tried to get him to cut off all contact with them for years before they finally gave up as they realized that Akaashi wouldn't budge.
They did try again when Akaashi became a member of Makarov's Army but it was at that point that Akaashi finally snapped and lashed out against his parents, calling them stupid due to the fact that they rather believed in the corrupt ministry than the two most powerful wizards of all time (Makarov Dreyar & Edward Newgate).
He eventually participated in the Battle of Hogwarts which he survived but it led to him permanently cut off contact with his parents after they accused his friends of putting the Imperius Curse on him to act out against them.
After graduating from Hogwarts, he was temporarily a Chaser for the Pride of Portree but after an injury caused by a Bludger, he retired and started working on the quidditch section of the Daily Prophet and got married to Bokuto who he had two adopted sons together with.
He has a Chestnut wand with a Unicorn Hair core.
His Patronus is a rufous-legged owl.
His favorite subjects are Charms and Flying.
His least favorite subjects are Potions and Transfiguration.

@dreamingpartone my answear to your comment is so long Tumblr won't let me post it as a comment 😭😭 so I guess Im gonna copy it here
"ALSO I love how all, or at least most of the animals you choosed can be found in Japan, its such a nice detail!! And I have a few new ideas, so I think I'm gonna share them (sorry if I'm being annoying)
Oikawa — bearded vulture Iwaizumi — osprey Kindaichi — emu Mattsun — addax
Bearded vulture in iranian culture is associated with a mythological bird Homa (believed to fly restlessly and never land, though when it cast shadow it is believed to bestow kingship; Homa also, similarly to phoenix, would be consumed in fire every few centuries and then be reborn new from the ashes) + from the analysis I read they are prone to growing obsessive, pround, shrewd, and can be sensitive to critism and change. In my opinion it suits Oikawa pretty well, especially the kingship part (i know that Kageyama was the one called King but Hinata also nicknamed Oikawa The Great King so. )
Bokuto — horned owl??????? Akaashi — great grey owl Konoha — white faced scops owl Sarukui — verreuxs eagle owl Onaga — northern hawk owl
I have a massive problem with Fukurodani to be honest. I could just give them the owls they are named after, but Bokuto honestly doesn't match any owl?? + I like Akkashi with great grey owl better (focused, knows how to be patient and plan ahead, perceptive, protective over their work as well as those they are close to) than with the one he's named after (its rufous legged owl from what I know?)
Ushijima — golden eagle Tendou — spotted hyena
Golden eagles are amazing fliers and fantastic hunters. They are also deeply tied into human culture, especially religion (theyre national bird in five different countries, theyre featured prominently in the Bible and in plenty of other religions - especially many Native American cultures. They are messengers from God(s), they are a protector, they are strength, they are sacred creatures flying across the sky above us all.) And Ushijima is the undefeated captain of Shiratorizawa, people from other teams, speaking about him, give him almost demi-god status - he is the equivalent of force, they dont even dream about beatibg him (and he also reminds me of Zeus for some reason) + golden eagle' people are confident, assertive, natural leaders, though not the type to make many attachments, succes-driven + Shiratorizawa is represented as an eagle
I don't think I need to say much about how people view hyenas (both them and Tendou are percieved as monsters). Hyenas are weird animals, and so is Tendou. Hyenas' people are gregarious, competitive, confident, extraordinarily dogged when it partains to their interests. (Every time I give a hyena daemon to a character in my aus its based purely on the vibes so the explanation might be weird, Im sorry)
Terushima — pitbull
I think we can all agree that Terushima just acts like a happy puppy sometimes. Pitbull' people are active, tenacious, competitive, and confident, they value close bonds, courage in others abd having fun.
I hope it makes at least some sense?? ALSO SORRY THAT ITS SO LONG, when I astart talking about daemons I just cant stop (I hope and didn’t make any stupid mistakes this time)"
Hi! First, i wanted to tell you that I love your art!! I always pictured Lyra with short brown hair but the way you draw her is just so much better than what I imagined while reading the book. Also, the way you draw literally every character makes me want to hug them (does that makes sense lol).
Second, since you read hdm and watched haikyuu, i wanted to ask if you have any daemon ideas for the haikyuu characters?
(Also sorry for bad english, its not my first language)
hi!! thank you so much!! I am very fond of my dirty blonde maned Lyra, I'm glad you like her :> and that's such a nice compliment aww (it makes sense to me! I think if you feel like you want to hug them then I've done a decent job in conveying some emotion for them. or at least, I hope! haha)
and oh man haikyuu characters with daemons…that's a dangerous question to ask me… the short answer is I do have ideas! but for some characters I have too many ideas that it's hard for me to settle (ha… :')) on one thing
long answer is here is a list of daemon options I've pondered for the karasuno squad:
Daichi: my cliche pick for him is a carrion crow, but alternatively I think something like a tanuki or Japanese badger would be cute
Suga: Japanese marten !!
Asahi: my favourite choice for him is a binturong but I have considered A Range of creatures and could possibly be swayed elsewhere
Kiyoko: I first thought something like a crane (demoiselle crane?) or a deer (sika deer?) but a friend once suggested cat and I do like that as an option too…
Noya: again, have considered many things but I think Hokkaido dog is my best pick (probably a black one!)
Tanaka: Kishu dog ("sesame" coloured) !
Ennoshita: I enjoy imagining him with a dollarbird, for purely nonsense personal reasons (otherwise, an Asian koel)
Kinoshita: a Japanese hare possibly?
Narita: I'm not convinced at all that I have the best option here, but maybe Pallas' squirrel?
Kageyama: may seem like an odd choice but the Japanese serow is my favourite for him
Hinata: at first I jokingly picked the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel but also…am I wrong???
Tsukki: moon moth perhaps? 👀
Yamaguchi: black paradise flycatcher ?
Yachi: Ezo chipmunk :>
anyway that's…that's a summary of what I've got fhdjdgf. do you have any thoughts on hq characters & daemons, anon? :0
(also don't be sorry at all, your english is great!!)

Finally, some color studies. I always forget how much spring tends to drain me, energy-wise.
Top: Mountain type Aequis custom for @narqwibqwib based on lammergeier. (EXCITE!)
Middle: Mountain type Aequis custom, osprey coloration.
Bottom: Desert type Aequis, rufous-legged owl coloration. (I never expected for this one to get so out of control? Like woah.)

For those of you who wanted it, Bokuaka Swan Owl Lake au! part one (out of ???)
I know in swan lake that odette is a swan during the day but I wanted to switch it around since owls are nocturnal. So, Akaashi becomes partially human during the daytime.
Anyway, this was inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite and of course,,,Barbie Swan Lake because those old barbie movies are my shit. Please let me know what you think and stay tuned for more! The other parts are linked in a pinned post on my blog

From my understanding, Akaashi’s inspiration owl has been mistaken for a burrowing owl before when his name comes from the rufous legged owl which is honestly really funny to me because if you google either or both of these birds you will find that:
-Burrowing owls look like very serious birds. No nonsense, a man with a plan, also very tired.
You know. Like akaashi.
But rufous legged owls?
Those birds have like two modes.
Very sad and melancholic and probably also really tired.
Tumblr media
Or
Tumblr media
Knows all the secrets of the universe and hates it, will probably lure you into your grave and let your lifeless body be claimed by the fae like the petty heathen it is.
