I have think there's something wrong with me.
I have one singular dog. Since I've gotten Misty, I've purchased 8 collars, 2 leashes, and 1 slip leash. In addition to these, I already had 3 leashes, Misty came home with a collar, and a puppy sized martingale slip leash.
Why am I about to buy yet another leash????

Thanks, @losech! Zarya loves her rainbow watercolor galaxy dog collar! She much prefers this walking in this one over the Ruffwear harness and the rolled collar. Will have to order some more limited slip collars. This one was meant to be a themed tie-out collar for photos and videos of long-distance thru-hiking trips for when it's time to put the dog up on the trolley-line (aerial cable run) while setting up the tent, but this one ended up being the collar Zarya chooses for walking. Please check out Campfire Collars on Etsy. (Also, thanks @mostly-tame / @bones-n-bookles for demonstrating what the pattern looks like on Torch.)

Hey! So nice to see the dogs starting to do their pulling thing again now that the weather is cooling off (wtf has this summer been in New England, am I right?). Anyway, I wanted to ask because I know you are my authority on safety with hiking/packing/pulling dog equipment. My new Swissy is of an age where she should start getting used to packs/hikes/drafting/pulling equipment (I would love to do all these things with fun for her, and to promote the preservation of the breed) I already have a non-stop x-back for my akita and will be getting one for my swissy girl once she is done growing, but I was wondering what you recommend for packs. I know there is a lot that goes into them and the more forward on a dogs shoulders/chest, the better they are for the health of the dog and their spines/range of motion. Currently looking at the Wolf Pack Banzai and Reflector and wondering what you think of them? I also plan to get the akita a pack so that they can each carry their own water when we go hiking (and get some of the weight off of me XD)
I would recommend the Wolf Pack Banzai, it is one of the brands I use for my dogs and I really think they're great packs! One of their benefits imo is the sizing. I find that Ruffwear packs have a very limiting sizing since large/x-large is the same size so they fit my dogs weird (medium pack too small, large pack fits okay on some dogs, but not all etc.). Wolfpack packs run large, so they can really accommodate a large/giant breed better than most other brands.
Ruffwear is in no way a bad company, I like their packs, but find myself reaching for the Wolfpack's ones more often. Wolfpacks have a tougher material, the bag sag less imo, they hold their shape very well, and I find Wolfpacks easier to keep balanced. The only thing that sets Ruffwear above is the built in harnesses of their packs, which are very nice. You'll need to have your dog wear a harness or secure collar if you intend to get a Wolfpack dog pack since it's just a pack, no harness. Wolfpacks also has five colors available and the reflective stripe is a lot wider than many other packs on the market which is another plus for me.

Torch got new tings lately ✨️ some gifts from my amazing friends (ily @losech and @petrichorpaws 💕), a barkbox, and a petsmart haul 😌
Absolutely in love with the now complete black galaxy set I have from Campfire Collars (@losech ) 🖤✨️ also greatly enjoying the new ruffwear leash @petrichorpaws got me, it's the same model as my favorite one they have to use walking Raven 😂 but river pattern!! And blue and green for Torch and Wrigley's colors ✨️
Torch is, naturally, ecstatic about ALL THE SNACKS AND CHEWS AND TOYS, and likes any collar/leash bc it means outside time lol. He's very happy to have another antler, they're his favorite but I hate buying them bc like.... you can just find those in the woods. Why are they so expensive and why does the pet store always have them sawed up into smaller pieces that's so obnoxious. But I found one I liked and he's worth it

Any chance we can see your personal collection of collars leashes and gear? You mentioned keeping rejected things and such so it makes me curious of just how much you have accumulated over the years lol
I actually haven't been making collars for very long, under a year! I started doing it in I think September or October of last year. I do have a fairly big collection though.
Tumblr media
These are all collars I did not make. Some I really like, some I don't. I bought most of these before I started making them.
Tumblr media
I did make these. I didn't include all the doubles of some patterns. Cinder has a bunch of purple mushrooms. I kept some of these since the pattern ended up too far to one side or I didn't like the stitching.
Tumblr media
These are what happens when I play around with ends on full slips. I sell them with the pattern fully covering the end.
Tumblr media
These are limited slips. The slip action works better when the pattern is not on the slip part, but it looks better when it is. I only do the no pattern if someone asks for it.
Tumblr media
This is the only example I could find of thread color. I made one with orange and one with blue. I use blue and kept the orange. Plus the attachment stitching on the orange by the D ring is off a bit.
Tumblr media
These are the only leashes of mine I've made so far. I couldn't make up my mind on the color of thread that attaches the handle, sometimes it matches the pattern and sometimes it matches the webbing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some more leashes. Ruffwear on the left, Mendota on the right. I love the carabiners on the ruffwear leashes and the mendota are just nice. I use those a ton.
I didn't include all the hunting stuff, leather, biothane, or tie out collars. It's not a ton but is mostly repetitive. There's also other stuff missing because I couldn't find it. No harnesses or packs either. Or the box of collars I have leftover from a festival and examples I made for photos lol

In ight of Ten not being able to wear collars any more and needing lift assistance around the house, please recommend me some aesthetically pleasing harnesses! Nonrestrictive or specifically for training. Handles a plus. Green is always a bonus, as he is the Green Boy.
I really want the Ruffwear Webmaster with the fun Nickelodeon splatty pattern, but I'll have to wait on luck or chance for that to become available in his size secondhand.

Just an unnecessarily long post about dog gear I want- scroll by if you don’t want my ramble
So in feb I’m gonna have a treat yo self month because it be my birthday, and I may have a lil extra spending money from working a bunch of overtime during Christmas (I am knackered but I needed the cash and work needed my assistance)
And seeing as no-one likes buying me dog gear as Christmas/birthday gifts I’m gonna buy myself these nice things.
I wanna get Juno a lovely leather collar, nefjas person sent me a link to a German company who make elk leather collars in a martingale style??? Absolute perfection. I’ve been a sucker for martingales for a couple of years now and am reluctant to turn back.
Tumblr media
What a delectable collar. So chic. So stylish. Fancy collar for my non-fancy mutt to strut about the town with (no flooded field walks for that collar)
Gonna pair it with a brand new cute dog tag because Juno currently wears Hana’s old one. I think after a year she’s earned her own tag, don’t you think?
Tumblr media
Lookit!!! So cute!! It’s not Juniper tree but it’s close enough (don’t tell my partner, the tree surgeon, I said that). Would look so good with the collar.
And since my mendota lead is looking real ropey (haha, because it’s a rope?) I’m gonna treat myself to a new one. It’s served me so well but I did not look after it. Now it smells and is fraying and the leather by the clasp is loose. It just looks a mess. Love my mendota lead, don’t love that I’ve destroyed it. I did dabble with the idea of an adjustable lead but they’re all flat and I’m sorry but round leads are superior. I’m not ready to go back to flat. Mendota so comfy, mendota so röund, medota have goldish clasp to match tag and collar ring.
But do I stop the spending there?? I’ve been gagging for a ruffwear backpack but my lord £100 for a backpack??? I know it’s quality, built to last, and most importantly designed to minimise injury but it’s a rather frivolous spend.
My reasoning is that added weight to some walks may help reduce some pulling, she’s so much better but still gets excitable. It can be useful if we wanna go on longer hikes once my partner and I have time to do some weekends away. Carrying water etc. I really want to do a camping getaway at some point and having her carry her own food is adorable and practical. But also it could be useful on days where we want or need to be a bit lazier. Dog needs exercising but we’re burned out/ill? Cool, mile and a half sniffy walk with lightly packed backpack. If I wanna tire her out because we have plans and need her nice and calm? Boom, backpack walk.
Also, backpack cute. Backpack could have patches. Backpack bring joy to look at. Backpack make chronically ill days much easier.
Backpack.
Oh there’s also an adorable martingale collar on Etsy that I want. An unnecessary purchase but I so rarely find a martingale I really really like (I’m picky okay)
But there are things that I could spend my money on that is (arguably) needed more. Waterproof longline, new treat pouch, new walking boots because mine are leaky, dog toys that serve a purpose more than “it squeaks and can be thrown”. I also need a haircut and new prescription glasses but it’s more fulfilling to spend money on the dog.
GAH! Maybe I’ll win the lottery on Friday and I can buy it all. But until then I gotta budget and make informed purchases.
Anyway I just wanted to rant to the void because I usually do all this in my head but I wanna get more active on tumblr and sometimes airing these thoughts helps make decisions. And if you suddenly see me posting Juno in 4k completely decked out in new gear in the mountains? I’ve won the lottery, quit work to travel with dog that has a whole new wardrobe, captured on a top of the line point and shoot 😂

19, 48, 63
19. I'm at a stage where Milo's learned a lot of the tricks I really wanted to teach him - except pretty much any agility exercises. 🥲 I've tried so many times to coax him through tunnels or over dog walks but he just hates it. It's something I'd love to try with a future dog.
48. Boys or girls? In general, I find there's something kinda endearingly stupid about boys.
63. Favourite piece of dog gear is a tough one! I got him a Ruffwear harness for Christmas that is super practical. On the other hand, I love this collar with Belfast landmarks on it. We used to live near the Titanic Quarter and would walk by the museum all the time!

The Ultimate Guide to Soft Dog Harnesses: Comfort and Control for Your Furry Friend
When it comes to walking your dog, comfort and safety are paramount. Soft dog harnesses are an excellent choice for pet owners looking for a gentle yet effective way to control their dogs during walks. In this guide, we’ll explore the benefits of soft dog harnesses, key features to consider, and some top recommendations for various dog sizes and breeds.
Why Choose a Soft Dog Harness? 🐾
1. Comfortable Fit
Soft dog harnesses are typically made from padded, breathable materials that ensure your dog is comfortable while wearing them. Unlike traditional collars, harnesses distribute pressure evenly across the dog's body, reducing the risk of injury to the neck and throat.
2. Reduced Pulling
Many soft harnesses are designed to discourage pulling behavior. They often feature front clips that redirect your dog’s movement when they try to pull ahead, making walks more enjoyable and manageable.
3. Easy to Put On and Take Off
Soft harnesses generally have user-friendly designs, such as quick-release buckles or step-in styles, making them easy to put on and take off. This is especially helpful for busy pet owners.
4. Variety of Styles and Colors
Soft dog harnesses come in a range of styles, colors, and patterns, allowing you to find the perfect match for your pup’s personality and your own taste.
Key Features to Look For 🔍
Tumblr media
1. Adjustability
Look for harnesses with adjustable straps to ensure a snug and secure fit. This is important for both comfort and safety, as a well-fitted harness will prevent chafing and slipping.
2. Material Quality
Choose a harness made from high-quality, durable materials that are also soft and breathable. Look for padded areas to enhance comfort, especially if your dog has sensitive skin.
3. Leash Attachment Options
Many soft harnesses feature multiple leash attachment points (front and back), providing versatility for different walking styles and training needs.
4. Reflective Elements
If you walk your dog in low-light conditions, consider a harness with reflective stitching or patches for added visibility and safety.
Top Soft Dog Harnesses Recommendations 🏆
1. Ruffwear Front Range Harness
Features:
Two leash attachment points (front and back)
Padded chest and belly for comfort
Reflective trim for visibility
The Ruffwear Front Range Harness is perfect for active dogs and offers a comfortable fit with a durable design. Its multiple attachment points provide flexibility for different walking styles.
2. Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Harness
Features:
Five adjustment points for a perfect fit
Padded chest plate for added comfort
Includes a seat belt tether for car safety
The Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Harness is versatile, serving as both a walking harness and a car safety harness. Its sturdy construction and comfortable padding make it an excellent choice for daily use.
3. PetSafe Easy Walk Harness
Features:
Front leash attachment to discourage pulling
Adjustable straps for a custom fit
Quick-snap buckles for easy on/off
The PetSafe Easy Walk Harness is designed specifically to help prevent pulling during walks. Its comfortable fit and ease of use make it a favorite among dog owners.
How to Fit a Soft Dog Harness Properly 🛠️
Tumblr media
1. Measure Your Dog
Before purchasing a harness, measure your dog’s chest and neck. Use a soft measuring tape for accuracy.
2. Adjust the Harness
Once you have the harness, adjust it according to your dog’s measurements. A snug fit is essential— you should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the harness and your dog’s body.
3. Test the Fit
After putting the harness on your dog, observe their movement. Ensure it doesn’t restrict their movement or cause discomfort.
4. Recheck Fit Regularly
As your dog grows or gains weight, regularly check the fit of the harness. Adjustments may be necessary to maintain comfort and safety.
Tips for Training Your Dog to Use a Soft Harness 🐕
1. Introduce the Harness Gradually
Start by allowing your dog to sniff and explore the harness. Gradually get them used to wearing it, using treats as positive reinforcement.
2. Practice Walking Indoors
Once your dog is comfortable wearing the harness, practice walking them indoors to help them acclimate to the feeling.
3. Gradually Increase Walk Duration
Start with short walks and gradually increase the distance as your dog becomes more comfortable with the harness.
4. Be Consistent
Use the harness regularly during walks to reinforce positive associations with it.
Conclusion: Finding the Perfect Soft Dog Harness 🌈
Soft dog harnesses provide an excellent combination of comfort, safety, and control for your furry friend. By choosing the right harness and ensuring a proper fit, you can enjoy many pleasant walks together. With various options available, you can find the perfect soft harness that suits your dog’s needs and style.
Invest in a quality soft dog harness today and transform your walking experience into a more enjoyable adventure for both you and your pup! 🐕💖

Gear I’m using for my second prospect puppy!
We learned a lot about dog gear with Mandana. Here’s what we’ll be using for my new service dog prospect.
PUPPY COLLAR: A series of cheap martingales she is going to grow out of quickly. When she’s bigger we’ll get some quality 2” martingales to match with Mandana.
PUPPY HARNESS: The service dog academy uses harnesses in puppyhood to protect our future heeling from getting spoiled by pulling. Red Dingo was Mandana’s first harness and I’ll be using the same (its a good harness but mostly for nostalgia 🥲)
PUPPY LEASH: I’ll be using a cheap nylon leash until I’m sure she’s not going to chew on it and then I’ll switch to our biothane leashes.
PUBLIC ACCESS HARNESS: Our first training harness will be the EzyDog Express. I love the one I have for Mandana. It’s super easy to put on, fits well for a straight front, is very minimalistic but still has patches.
PUBLIC ACCESS SIGNAGE: My favorite public access gear are these clip on tags from The Dog Days Of Maxx. They also released custom vests which we might be getting for public access training. My favorite phrases are: Training, Give Us Space. It’s very direct and gives the public an appropriate action to take. I also like how it’s a little ambiguous and can be used for service dog training or reactivity. I find that helps relieve some of the pressure that comes with taking a SD puppy in public.
SHOES: Taravali will be a winter puppy and I probably won’t be able to use shoes in the beginning but I want to train her to wear them before summer. We had to use shoes a lot with Mandana when we lived in an apartment so we tried a huge variety. Hands down my favorite dog shoes are HC Pet Boots from Amazon. They are designed really well and are more comfortable and affordable than what Ruffwear offers. They’re easier to get on than the Nonstop Dog Wear booties and I can’t afford the nicer MuttLuks since they don’t have a service dog discount.
PULLING HARNESS: Taravali won’t be using the carpet mill or going bike joring until she’s older but when she’s ready we’ll reuse Mandana’s Howling Dog Alaska Distance harness and then switch to our CTCdoggear shoulder harness when she’s older and ready for forward momentum tasks. (Tip: the D-rings on the shoulder work great for a pull strap and I requested extra D-rings on the back 6” apart so I could snap on a vest when in public. They make harnesses for sled dogs but these modifications make for a very comfortable & ergonomic mobility harness)
RUFFWEAR: We get the working dog discount from Ruffwear so we like to use a lot of their products. For decompression walks I’ll be reusing Mandana’s Hi & Lite harness and might switch to a Flagline if she tries to back out of it. Taravali is going to be a parti poodle so if we’re in the sun a lot I might use our Swamp Cooler jacket to keep her from getting sunburned. Since she’s a winter puppy I’ll start with the zippered Climate Changer and switch to the Vert & Furness when she’s older and of course we have our embroidered Lumenglow for working in the rain or dark. I’ll probably also reuse Mandana’s modified Trail Runner harness for public access if she gets big enough to wear it.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Waterproof Dog Collar.
Tumblr media
When it comes to our furry friends, we always want the best. From nutritious food to engaging toys, everything needs to be perfect. One essential accessory for any dog owner is a reliable dog collar. However, if your dog loves to swim, play in the rain, or get messy, a regular collar might not cut it. This is where a waterproof dog collar comes in. Let’s dive into why a waterproof dog collar is a game-changer and how to choose the best one for your pet.
Why Choose a Waterproof Dog Collar?
1. Durability: Waterproof dog collars are made from materials like Biothane, which is known for its strength and durability. Unlike traditional leather or fabric collars, they won’t degrade or weaken when exposed to moisture. This means your dog's collar will last longer, no matter how adventurous they get.
2. Easy to Clean: Dogs can get into some pretty messy situations. With a waterproof collar, cleanup is a breeze. Simply wipe it down with a damp cloth, and it’s good as new. No more lingering odors or stains.
3. Comfort: Just because a collar is durable doesn’t mean it has to be uncomfortable. Waterproof collars are designed with your dog's comfort in mind. They are flexible, lightweight, and often have a soft inner lining to prevent chafing.
4. Safety: A wet collar can become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to skin infections. Waterproof collars reduce this risk, keeping your dog’s neck clean and healthy.
Features to Look For in a Waterproof Dog Collar
1. Material: The best waterproof dog collars are made from materials like Biothane or coated nylon. These materials are not only water-resistant but also resistant to mold, mildew, and odor.
2. Buckle Quality: Look for collars with sturdy, rust-proof buckles. Stainless steel or high-quality plastic buckles are ideal as they won’t corrode when exposed to water.
3. Reflective Elements: If you often take your dog for walks in low-light conditions, a collar with reflective strips can enhance visibility and keep your pet safe.
4. Adjustable Fit: Ensure the collar is easily adjustable to fit your dog’s neck comfortably. A collar that is too tight can cause discomfort, while one that is too loose can slip off.
5. Style and Color: Just because it’s functional doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish. Waterproof collars come in a variety of colors and patterns, so you can choose one that matches your dog’s personality.
Top Picks for Waterproof Dog Collars
1. Ruffwear Crag Dog Collar: Known for its durability and vibrant colors, this collar is perfect for active dogs. It features a reflective strip for added safety.
2. Biothane Dog Collar by Dogline: Made from high-quality Biothane, this collar is both strong and flexible. It’s available in various sizes and colors.
3. Kurgo Muck Collar: This collar is made from PVC-free material and is designed to withstand the messiest adventures. It also features a bottle opener for added convenience.
How to Maintain Your Waterproof Dog Collar
Regular Cleaning: Even though it’s waterproof, it’s still a good idea to clean your dog’s collar regularly. A simple wipe down with a damp cloth will suffice for most messes. For more stubborn dirt, use a mild soap and water.
Check for Wear and Tear: Periodically inspect the collar for any signs of damage or wear. Replace the collar if you notice any fraying or weakening of the material.
Proper Storage: When not in use, store the collar in a dry place away from direct sunlight. This will help maintain the integrity of the material.
Conclusion
A waterproof dog collar is an excellent investment for any dog owner, especially those with adventurous pets. It offers durability, easy maintenance, and comfort, ensuring your dog stays happy and healthy. By considering the material, buckle quality, reflective elements, and style, you can find the perfect waterproof collar that suits your dog’s needs. Happy adventuring!

The Importance of Choosing the Right Hiking Leash
Choosing the right hiking leash for your dog is not only essential for safety and comfort but also plays a significant role in enhancing your overall outdoor experience. In this section, we’ll delve deeper into the importance of selecting the perfect hiking leash by discussing various factors that contribute to an enjoyable and secure adventure with your furry friend.
Safety Considerations
One of the primary reasons for choosing the right hiking leash is to ensure the safety of both you and your dog. A suitable leash allows you to maintain control over your pet, preventing them from wandering off or encountering potential hazards such as wildlife, steep cliffs, or busy roads. Additionally, the right leash can help prevent accidents or injuries caused by sudden pulling or lunging.
Comfort for You and Your Dog
A well-suited hiking leash contributes to the comfort of both you and your canine companion. For your dog, a comfortable leash minimizes strain on their neck and body, allowing them to enjoy the hike without discomfort. For you, the right leash offers a secure grip and reduces strain on your arms and shoulders, making it easier to manage your dog during long hikes.
Functionality and Features
Different leashes offer unique features tailored to specific needs, enhancing your overall hiking experience. For example, hands-free leashes provide added convenience by freeing up your hands, while bungee leashes reduce strain and impact caused by pulling. By selecting a leash with features that cater to your preferences and requirements, you can optimize the functionality of your hiking gear.
Durability and Weather Resistance
When choosing a hiking leash, it’s essential to consider its durability and resistance to various weather conditions. A high-quality leash should be able to withstand wear and tear from regular use, as well as exposure to elements such as rain, snow, and mud. Opting for a durable and weather-resistant leash ensures that your investment lasts longer and provides reliable performance throughout your adventures.
Adaptability to Different Environments
Lastly, the right hiking leash should be adaptable to different environments and situations. Depending on your hiking location, you may encounter various terrains, wildlife, and other challenges that require different levels of control and flexibility. By selecting a versatile leash that can be adjusted according to your surroundings, you can confidently navigate any trail with your canine companion.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the importance of choosing the right hiking leash for your dog cannot be overstated. By considering factors such as safety, comfort, functionality, durability, and adaptability, you can select the perfect leash that enhances your outdoor experience and ensures the well-being of both you and your pet. With the appropriate leash in hand, you and your furry friend will be well-equipped to tackle any trail and create lasting memories together.
