The wooden noise of the bathroom door alerted Ram you were making over to the bedroom. Ram heard the anklets and saw you come in the room, your wet hair open, just in blouse and skirt. He couldn't help but stare. When the gods made you, they spent days to perfection.

You kept your feet on the dressing table, rubbing the scented oil on your shins, switching legs. Later, you moved up, rubbing the oil on your back and neck. Ram shut his book close, keeping it beside the empty, foggy white glass. He made his way to the windows and closed the gates, pulling the curtain over them. You stared at him from the mirror, nervous. When he shut the door, Ram made sure to make eye contact with you in the mirror. The room had slanted rays of setting sun highlighting the floor and some of the books, except that, it was pretty much brown and dark.

Ram slowly walked towards you. You turned around to face him, and backed on the dressing table as you felt him coming close. Only mere centimeters away, Ram leaned in, placing a hand on the mirror behind you. You couldn't find the Ram in his eyes you usually do. There was something far more fiercer, penetrating his gaze. It didn't look like the shy Ram who hugged you and kissed your neck and asked you if you wanted to make love tonight. These eyes looked like as if they would hunt you down and devour you.

"What did you add in the milk?" Ram could tell by your expression you were caught. "Nothing" you muttered, just above your breath. Ram's hand caught your wrist, holding it behind your body. He paid no attention to your scrunched eyebrows. "Are you going to lie to me?" He rasped in your ear, making you shudder. Your mind went in a frenzy, and settled on doing something he might not like. You pushed past him, hurrying to the door, when Ram caught your wrist, pulling you in his chest hard. He then slammed you on the wall, eliciting a yelp from you. He held your hands tightly above you in a strong grip.

"Do you want me to repeat myself?" His voice dropped octaves, sending a shiver down your spine. "A- aphrodisiac" you could see his gears turning physically, from confusion to realisation, to a smirk on his face- revenge? Ram's hand moved to the back of your head, grasping your hair. You gasped, holding his wrist. It sting. Ram sat you down on the bed, loosing his grip. "You don't get enough of what I give?" Ram's question looked more like a threat. Scared, you nodded, only to be pushed back on the bed with a sudden force on your shoulder. You sat up on your elbows, feeling naked all of a sudden. "If that's so, then why would you add a whole vile of that potion in my milk?" That was the last thing you expected to see- Ram holding the small bottle in his fingers. Your eyes widened on their own.

The look of a hunter was prominent on his face as he crawled up on you. He looked like a desperate lion in heat. As if you would succeed, you tried to get back away from him, realising you were caught between the headboard and Ram himself. There was an attempt to run away, but Ram grabbed your thighs and pulled you close to him, holding himself on top of you. The only coldness he had in his body was the Om locket that touched your chin. "If you keep running away, I'll have to tie you. Do you want me to do that, Mrs. Ramaraju?" you felt your breath leaving your body when he rasped the words in your ear. The title from his lips felt like you were floating in the wind. You've started to like the choice you've made.

Ram stared at your nervous face, but the only thing his mind would settle on were your lips. The pink, plump lips he so wanted around his cock. He leaned down to capture your lips in his, pushing his tongue out. Not sure if it was the potion or you, Ram felt that he was dizzy. Ram crawled off you, and you followed his movements, sitting on the bed. "Whatever you've done to me" he put his hand around your throat, standing you up. "You're going to pay for it."

A Father's Anger

When Draupadi had married the Five Pandavas, the Kuru family had to accept it and considered the DrupadKanya as pure, because she was born from literal fire. And if anyone used to raise even one word towards her, then their own Rajkumari would raise her bow and sword at them.

But when Arjuni had married Dwarakadish Vasudev Krishna, the Kuru elders had raised questions on her virtue, purity and dignity. Dhritarashtra, the blind idiot, said it loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Arjuni, how could you even think of marrying a woman, let alone marry two people? Do you know how much this shows of your impurity? We acceptd Draupadi's marriage as she is born from fire. But you...we are doubtful about you!" Arjuni was surprised, yet she had also expected it.

"...I agree, Arjuni. All of us think you should take the Agni Pariksha to prove your pious nature." Agreed Gangaputra Bhishma. Everyone agreed. Even the Raaj Maata, the mother of the Pandavas, Kunti, added her own two cents. "I too, in my opinion, see this as a better option. Because I can't seem to have an impure daughter." Some gasped, yet agreed. Shakuni and the Kauravas smirked and gave manic grins.

Krishna and Draupadi tried to argue but were stopped by their wife. Arjuni, who was looking down, looked up directly in the eyes of everyone present, her own silver-blue eyes being indifferent. "If this is what everyone wants, then i shall agree to this. If i am impious indeed, then i will pass on and attain freedom. And then no one would have to have an impious woman as their family member."

Draupadi tried to retaliate again and Krishna squeezed his Parthavi's shoulder, in response of which Arjuni just smiled slightly and nodded at them. "If you wish to Maharaj, then we can do this today." Her voice monotone.

"Arjuni!—"

"Arju di ple!—"

"Jyeshtaa!—"

"Behena no!—"

"It is quite alright, Jyesht, Bhrata Bheem, Nakul and Sahadev." She gave the slightest smile as she ruffled Nakul and Sahadev's hair. Nakul hugged his elder sister.

"You have already suffered so much for us Di! You don't have to!—"

"Nakul, even mother thinks so." Phalgun broke the hug and carressed her younger brother's cheek. "It is alright my dear. Don't you worry about me." Nakul nodded tearfully, like how he used to when he was a kid and his elder sister used to tell him not to worry when something went wrong.

Arjuni sighed as she stood in between the half-built pyre. She joined her palms in a pranam as she prayed for Agnidev to bless her with his presence on the pyre around her, and prayed for thunder to fall on her.

Not even a minute passed when a large cascade of lightning fell on Gudhakeshaa, Agnidev made his presence known as well by making the pyre burst into flames. And the Rajkumari was soon erupted into flames, her body completey engulfed into fire.

Draupadi stood anxiously, Krishna was frazzled, the Pandavas tensed. Kunti looked like she didn't care. Bhishma tried to mask his worried face. Duryodhan and the older Kauravas were waiting impatiently. Shakuni was scoffing disapprovingly. Dronacharya was also trying to mask his emotions, while Karna and Ashwatthama thought that this was wrong, finally getting some sense into their empty brains.

Suddenly the flames shot up high in the sky, lighting up the area around them and the night sky, while the lightning still cascaded around with the sky being lighted up by their strikes.

And out walked someone gently. No wait...not someone...it was Arjuni...but...

But her form had changed. Her cerulean-silver eyes becoming more beautiful and more like a mixture of a swan's and a hawk's eyes, as well as her eye lashes larger. Her already beautiful form had became more bewitching, more sharp, more mesmerizing to the eyes. Her previously gorgeous ivory-blue saree had turned into a red and white saree, the colours mixed and faded into each other and the hem of her saree being extremely extensive. Her hair, which was previously in a braid, had now opened and had got longer and silkier, the ends of her hair still gently curved like before, and it flowed, spread along a large area, in the wind. And her face...it had turned more beautiful, if it was even possible, that is. She still had her chudamani on her hair and the hair accessory gifted to her by Draupadi to always keep a part of herself with her wife.

As she walked down from the stairs, everyone looked shocked at her. Krishna, though shocked himself, was flustered profusely.

Shockingly enough, Indradev himself appeared after Arjuni got down completely from the set of stairs.

"What is all this that i had to witness from the heavens, Maharaj Dhritarashtra? Kunti, do not even think that I do not have the knowledge of what you have put my divine daughter through!" Kunti shrunk under Shakra's words. "What is all this!? How do you even dare to question my beloved, angelic daughter about her dignity and virtue!?" Indra exclaimed, angrily.

Arjuni didn't want to interrupt her father as the God of Thunder glanced at his daughter and back at the Kurus, who cowered under his gaze. "Do you have any idea about her divinity? She is the incarnation of the Tridevi ! The incarnate of Lord Vishnu and Devi Lakshmi's ansh, Naari! And you all still dare to question her pious nature!?"

Kunti, Bhishma, Vidur and Dronacharya looked shocked to the core, while the blind fool of a King and Gandhari were stammering with their movements, horrified at what their children had put their niece through. The older Kauravas looked horrified, and Shakhni as well. The Pandavas looked surprised, and yet looked like they were blessed to have her being even close with them.

"How do you even dare to even think of such explicit things, you mere mortals!?" Devaraj yelled. "I have taken the decision of taking away my child away from such a family as my heavenly child does not deserve such a preposterous family!" He looks at his daughter but he hears the requests, pleas, and begs of the Kuru family.

Keshav and Agnisutaa rushed forwards, faster than anyone and beged Mahendra to not take their wife away.

"Please, i beg you Devendra! Do not take my Parthavi away from me!" Krishna begged.

"Please have mercy on her husband and wife, Indradev! Do not take her away, please!" She requested.

This was the first time the world had seen the reincarnation of Vishnu, the Lord of the Universe, Dwarakapati, beg someone. But Muralimanohar ignored all the stares.

"Pitashree..." came the soothing voice of the Tridevi incarnate as she touched her father's feet. "Please forgive them. I was the one who agreed to their order. They were only doubtful. It is not quite a problem for me. Please do give me your blessings." Arjuni looked up when she felt her father carressing her head. "Ayushman Bhava, Putri." He blessed his daughter.

Indra finally calmed down. "If anyone else questions my Parthavi's virtue, then they would face the end of my Sudarshan Chakra." Finalised Krishna, scaring the living soul out of everyone's bodies.

"I warn all of you, if you even think of questioning my child or even hurting a hair on her head, you would face the wrath of my Vajra. If one drop of tear even escapes from her tranquil eyes and then this would result the bloodshed of the Kuruvansh and a lifetime of thunderstorms above your ridiculous heads!" And then, after nodding smilingly at his daughter, he dissappeared from there.

From then on, no even tried to question anything irrelevant or try to plan something on Savyasachi, because they are scared of her husband's wrath, her father's rage and herself.

Two years after Governor Scott's death

Ram slowly walked away from his house, lost in thought. He could feel the wind in his face, rearranging his carefully styled hair and ruffling the shirt he just finished ironing. The sun, shining brightly in his eyes, slowly began its journey back to the horizon as kids laughed and ran back home from school. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath in, letting himself relax. There was a time when he didn’t know what the word relax meant, how it felt to feel his heart rate slowing and have time for himself. Now that he did, he never quite knew what to do with it. Sometimes, he would make a beeline to Bheem or Sita’s house to talk to them or have dinner together, other times, when he didn’t feel like socializing, he would sit at home and read a book. On days like today, when he just couldn’t get himself to pay attention to the words on a page, he’d huff and put down his book to go for a walk, thinking about how much his life and his India has changed.

“Ram anna, chai thaaguthara?” (tl. Do you want to drink chai?)

He turned his head and saw a group of kids at a street food stall looking at him eagerly and quickly recognized all of them from his colony. His mouth curved into a smile as he forgot about his earlier thoughts and started walking towards them, his hands checking his pockets to find his wallet.

“Aa thaguthanu. Anna, okka chai isthava?” (tl. Yes, I’ll drink some. Can you give me one chai?)

As the seller made his chai, he pretended to look in his wallet for money while secretly watching the kids, and smiled with a glint in his eyes as the kids’ faces fell, realizing he didn’t get them anything. He pulled out a 100 rupee note from his wallet and handed it to the vendor, who looked at him confused.

“Migilina paisalu tho pillalu ki vallaku ishtam ainadhi edhaina ivvandi, inka mitha meeru pettukondi.” (Give the kids whatever they want with the remaining money, and if there’s anything left you can keep it for yourself.)

The kids’ eyes widened at him in disbelief, and they quickly ran to the vendor before Ram could have second thoughts and asked for bajjis, dosas, lassis, and whatever else they could think of. Ram chuckled and shook his head, taking a seat at one of the tables and enjoying the warm taste of chai. He was completely aware the colony moms would make their displeasure very well known to him when he went home, but he figured he’d take it if it meant upholding his role as every kid’s favorite person.

The kids sat around him and became engrossed in conversations about their classes, the math teacher they despised, the cricket game they played last night, and a few other things and Ram sat back and listened attentively to their stories while tending to his chai, zoning out only once in a while when the conversation was directed away from him. 

At one of these moments, he heard a laugh and the jingling of bangles coming towards them, and he turned his head subconsciously. His jaw dropped as his eyes rested on the source of the laughter: a woman, busy in conversation with a younger girl, walking towards them wearing a beautiful black and yellow saree, her hair tied back in a neat braid, with a book in her hands. As they walked up to her, he suddenly stood up, catching the woman’s attention. When she turned to face him, he held his breath and examined her eyes, bordered with kohl, and the bright red bindi above the bridge of her nose. Silver jhumkas adorned her ears glowing in the sun and the smell of the jasmines in her hair radiated off her, and he was lucky one of the kids pulled on his hand to get his attention. The woman’s face softened as she smiled, turned away from him, and walked away, and he quickly reoriented himself, telling the kids he had other work to do tonight and started in the direction the woman had left towards, promising the kids they’d play cricket together another night. 

Ram speedwalked for a few minutes and finally caught up to them, trailing only a few meters behind, but he couldn’t bring himself to approach her. Internally, he was cursing himself out for making this seem easy to Bheem all those years ago, when he himself was such a mess at it. He wished Bheem, Sita, Jenny, the kids, or literally anyone was with him right now to tell him what to do and how not to embarrass himself. His shoe stepped on something and he tripped over, clasping his mouth to make sure no sound came out. When he turned to see what caused it, he found one of her silver jhumkas lying in the dirt. Ram couldn’t believe his luck and he picked up the jhumka, taking it as a sign from the universe to meet her. He then followed her, his faith in himself somehow reinstated simply by the fact he had something of hers in his pocket.

The women approached a Shiva temple, removed their shoes, and entered, and Ram stopped outside. He hadn’t been inside a temple since his father was killed by the British. Everyone close to him had tried to reinstate his faith in god, but he always shut down the idea by stating that if god was real, his father wouldn’t be dead, and if god is real and let his father be killed, then he had every reason to be extremely angry at that god. Ram almost turned around and left, but then he saw the woman returning outside, and froze, realizing she was staring at him. 

“Intha dhooram vachi lopadiki raara?” (tl. You came this far, won’t you come in?) she asked. Realizing he was stuck, he slowly took off his shoes and stepped into the temple.

Once he was standing next to her, she asked him what his name was and he replied saying his name is Ram. She introduced herself as Vaidehi, and he said the name back to her, appreciating the way it rolled on his tongue. They sat in the back of the temple, and Vaidehi opened her book and started reading while he examined her features, and noticed she had removed the other jhumka. Ram hated being interrupted while reading, but he also needed to close this silence somehow, so he craned his neck to see what book she was reading. 

“Avunu, gudiki vachi em pustakam chaduvuthunnavu? Adhi intlo guda cheyyachu kadha?” (tl. What book are you reading in the temple that you can’t read at home?)

That beautiful laughter that first got him to turn his head towards her escaped her mouth again and she told him his father was the head priest and she enjoyed attending the sandhya aarti whenever she could. She told him about the book she was reading, History of Dharmashastra, and they both fell into an animated conversation about the development of Indian ancient societies and their dreams for a modern and independent India. She said India needed more men like Alluri Ramaraju and he smiled and agreed, hiding the joy in his heart from hearing her say that. He never bothered mentioning that he was Ramaraju because he found it refreshing to talk to people normally without being treated like a savior everywhere he went. 

Suddenly, a man, who he assumed was Vaidehi’s father, stood in front of the garbhagriha and everyone in the temple stood up. They recited bhajans, and while Ramaraju knew all of them from memory from his childhood and his mother, he quietly listened to Vaidehi’s voice. At the end, he took the prasadam from one of the other priests and walked back outside with Vaidehi. She asked him if he didn’t know the bhajans, and he replied saying he did, but he enjoyed listening to them much more than singing them, opting to leave out the truth about his father. They talked more about their interests, exchanged addresses, and talked about meeting again. As the sun finally set, she told him she needed to leave, and that they’d definitely meet again. Ram watched her walk away and put his hand in his pocket, touching the jhumka he never returned, whispering, “I promise we will.”
