There was a post I saw in the witchcraft/witchblr tags about how not everything is a Sign/Omen/Supernatural Occurrence, and it was interesting reading some of the comments on it.
A lot of them revolved around "it doesn't hurt someone if they think x, y, and z means Something Is Happening" and "Let people have joy from things." and while I understand this point of view.... I think it's actually very important for people to know that not EVERYTHING is a magical occurrence and not EVERYTHING means something.
It's important, imo, to find your "baseline". As someone who is mentally ill, predisposed to spiritual psychosis from my schizoaffective disorder, and chronically ill, I wish someone would have said to me earlier in my witchcraft (and pagan) journey, that not everything has to mean something and that that's actually good.
It's important to understand what you're like when you're just having regular mental illness/chronic illness symptoms, and what it's like when there's an actual sign.
It's not bad to tell someone to have discernment. It's not bad to tell someone "hey maybe this could possibly be something mundane".
It's not bad to let it be known that not everything is something. It paves the way to know yourself better, know your baseline better, and to know your spiritual baseline (things that ARE occurrences) better.
It's 100% okay to remind people to make sure they're not thinking something is attacking them because their glass cracked under the heat of flame. It's okay to encourage critical thinking and discernment.
If you don't like the take and you don't want to agree with it, that's okay. But don't pretend that critical thinking and discernment are problems.
Also, if someone thinks EVERYTHING is magical/a spirit/a god, then what happens when something magical DOES happen but they don't even know to look for it/at it for what it could actually be because they're so used to everything being something that they don't even pay attention to actual happenings??? (Speaking from experience here.)
Get joy from your practice and your relationship with spirits and deities, sure. But remember that things can happen for absolutely non-magical completely mundane things too.
Also, if you're ever really wondering if something meant a thing... Reflect on it. Do divination about it. Just flat out ask about it to whoever you thought it was, or ask the universe for another sign to verify what you think.
Idk food for thought?

My hot take: You have to put effort into your craft and practice. It's understandable if you can't go all out all the time (esp. us chronic illness folks), but sometimes you need to show up. Build routine. Set aside and dedicate time/moments/acts that you already do.
Your craft just can't be there when you want something and then out it goes until you want something again. That's a very one-sided way to approach something, and I think with magic and witchcraft and anything really, you can't always just take. You gotta give too.
But that's just my little hot take. 🫰🏾
What is your witchy hot take?
Rules for this post:
Give the benefit of the doubt. If it seems like a blanket statement, it probably isn't, it's probably just based on that person's experience or belief system. Also don't turn it into some weird bigoted stuff or you get blocked.
MY witchy hot take is that I think tarot decks you choose personally match your energy better than those gifted to you.
How are you gunna know if you vibe with it if you've never messed with it before? I vibe with the one's I've been gifted, of course, but not as much as those that I choose myself.

A guy just walked by my house as I was watering. He pointed at some rue growing in my yard and asked me if I knew what it was. I said yes. He asked me if I used it. I didn't feel like talking about witchcraft with a stranger, so I said no but knew that you could.
He picked some and smelled it and told me it reminded him of home. He told me his mother would make a necklace of rue and garlic. His eyes seemed dreamy and happy with memory.
I didn't want to pry to ask where home was, but I thank him for sharing. He said he liked my garden and that made me happy.

Reading recommendations for someone looking to learn more about Benedicaria?
You have to be very careful. Under my Benedicaria tag, I mention that Vito Quattrocchi and his friend Fr Agostino Taumaturgo (aka, Jason Spadafore - he and Vito send their book drafts back and forth to one another, and are close friends) are like... beyond racist. They're openly-posting-swastika's racist, or at least Vito is. Gail Faith Edwards, while a separate vein of writing, is also racist, but even more strongly transphobic, though the bar is so low on resources that honestly the fact that she doesn't want back Mussolini and his friend the mustache man is an improvement over the first two.
Rue Roselli is friends with Fr Agostino but seems to not be racist, and tries to talk sense into the both of them on a variety of topics, including the lack of a sharp line between Strega and Benedicaria in practice, as opposed to in heart, so of the larger names Rue is who I would recommend. (Benedicaria being pretty solidly Catholic.)
As such...
Well, there's an adorable essay by someone who mostly writes what I'd call "pop witchcraft" (albeit with good messaging sometimes)- but this article shows something more of what she doesn't say in her books.
Mostly though, the answer is "find someone willing to teach you." And "read as many books on pre-Vatican II sacramentals as you can stand."
This website and book -
There's also some who are more Pagan / Strega leaning because of issues with Christianity, but mostly leave the practices and prayers and saints intact. Chaotic Witch Aunt falls under this category, including Diana as the main Pagan deity that shows up in their personal practice. (Note, they're non-binary, the "Aunt" title notwithstanding.)

Alright, after some MAJOR revisions, I want to reintroduce my Wednesday OC…
Reintroducing Prudence “Rue” Laveau
Tumblr media
FC is still Tati Gabrielle. Instead of having a Salem background, Rue is the descendant of a famous Voodoo practitioner from New Orleans named Marie Laveau. Not only is Rue following in her footsteps, but she also followed in the footsteps of her African ancestors by practicing African spiritualism and rootwork. It turns out some of her ancestors came from Cameroon, where witchcraft is called djambe and refers to a force inside a person. One of her ancestors (I haven’t decided if it will be Marie or maybe someone else) actually comes to Rue sometime during the series to talk to her about her djambe, how powerful it is, and how it will help her friends.
Because the force inside Rue is so powerful, the relationship she has with her familiar, a black panther named T’Challa, is incredibly strong. He provides Rue with consul when she needs it and comfort, as well as stability to her magic.
Rue is a strong lover of The 1975 (she feels like their music speaks to her on a personal level, and she totally gets Wednesday hooked on them too), she’s classically trained in ballet (her favorite is the Nutcracker), she also knows how to play the violin and is a big fan of classic literature.
I ALSO FORGOT TO SAY THAT SHE AND BIANCA ARE ENEMIES-TO-LOVERS EXCELLENCE!
Major thanks to my babe @starlit-ocs for helping me with Rue’s changes, especially regarding her ancestors.
Tagging: @fleetwoodmcs, @richitozier, @samwilsonns, @zoyazenik, @witchofinterest, @dancingsunflowers-ocs, @bi-ologistofthehills, @myoc-eansmind, @eddysocs
Let me know if you want to be tagged in anything of Rue’s!

Dear MCYTblr Holiday Exchange 2024 Creator
Hello! Thanks for creating for me. I'm anticipating this letter getting quite long, so I'll put the rest under the cut. If you're looking for DNWs specifically, those are all on my actual requests.
General Likes:
2nd person POV!!
Angst
Whump
Major Character Death
Pain- physical, mental, emotional
Misunderstandings!
Time travel!! (especially Peggy Sues)
Betrayal
Worldbuilding!!!
In-universe documents!
Trust
Devotion
Characters being triggered by seemingly innocuous things
Hyperspecific Likes:
When a character travels back in time/to an alternate reality and sees someone who hurt them in the past and is terrified, but it turns out that the person who hurt them has not in fact hurt them yet and actually cares for them deeply
When people think a character has been hurt in a completely different way to how they've actually been hurt
General Dislikes (NOT hard DNWs, I can and do enjoy these sometimes, but maybe only do them if you really love your idea):
Pure fluff with no past trauma/disagreements or current conflict
Reader-inserts
Omegaverse
Opt-ins (things people often DNW that I am open to receiving in a gift):
Any and all archive warnings (again, just nothing that would be rated explicit)
1st, 2nd, and any type of 3rd person POV, I don't care
Self-inserts
Suicide
Self-harm
Songfic
Prompts by fandom (all optional, but provided for inspiration purposes)
Skyblock Kingdoms
Solo: Marma1ade
Anything with the void, her feelings about it, her magic, her past, etc.; this could be canon compliant
Or show her with any other SBKer working on a project or something
If you like holidays, perhaps you could show her celebrating one, whether it's fictional or non-fictional
Marma1ade & Rue
I feel like it could be interesting to have them arguing about Avid
Feel free to just ignore Rue's death and pretend it never happened
Or you could go for the MCD angle and show Marm grieving! That would make a really good fic I bet
Alternatively, Marm necromancies Rue
For the holidays angle, I think birthday would be an interesting one. What counts as Rue's birthday? Or, does she even know what it means to celebrate birthdays, or does she learn when Marm celebrates hers?
AvidMC & Rue
Combined with the last one, perhaps Avid and Rue both show up to Marm's birthday party and they confront each other?
Or anything where Rue meets Avid again. She should get to yell at him I think. (not that they're necessarily confident enough to do that yet)
...or go heavy on the angst and let Avid murder her
AvidMC & Marma1ade
Them just hanging out!
or arguing
or something connected to a previous prompt
or Avid Adventures connection
Or Marm tries to get Avid to celebrate a void-worshipping holiday with her!
Marma1ade & Olm
kill Olm with hammers
Or, what if Marmalade had gone into Limbo proper and gotten trapped by Olm?
AvidMC & Olm
Canon compliant exploration of their interactions
Marma1ade & Vintage_Applesauce, or Kittrix/Marma1ade
I don't have many ideas but this would be neat regardless
Witchcraft SMP
Smajor1995 & Soupforeloise & ZombieCleo
Just them hanging out and perhaps being mildly creepy to onlookers
This also works for any of the individual duo relationships within this group (including romantic El/Cleo)
And for this group + Lauren
Milo/Smajor1995
Angst? Mayhaps? *cough* alternate timeline where Milo's ghost had to talk Scott down from suicide *cough*
or other angst
Milo & ZombieCleo
They should get to interact
...birthday party for Scott?
Or a canon divergent Cleo as Supreme Witch situation
Solo: ZombieCleo
Time shenanigans! Maybe more time travel, a stable or unstable time loop, Cleo guiding her friends through time, etc.
Anything to do with Kairos. Kairos my beloved.
Or her relationship with any of the other witches, especially Prismarina (Platonic preferred in that case, but romantic is cool too)
Empires SMP (Season 1)
Solo: GeminiTay
Worldbuilding would be great! Magic, Crystal Cliffs society, Crystal Cliffs relations with other empires, etc.
GeminiTay & MythicalSausage
ANGST
This would be a great one if you wanted to specifically cater to me by forcing Gem post-torture to interact with a good Sausage. Possibly including time travel and misunderstandings
Or write about the torture itself
hatred and betrayal and complicated feelings
or you could write about them meeting as kids before everything went bad
GeminiTay & Joey Graceffa and/or GeminiTay & Xornoth
more angst but focused on the physical or magical over the mental pain of betrayal
time travel
Xornoth's perspective of getting sealed?
fWhip & GeminiTay & MythicalSausage & PearlescentMoon
Wither Rose Alliance meeting?
Or them hanging out being bad guys
GeminiTay & Solidarity
Jimmy's reaction to Gem's betrayal
Gem apologizing to Jimmy (maybe she's Jewish and it's Yom Kippur and she did some self-reflection?)
Gem doubling down on not apologizing to Jimmy
fWhip & GeminiTay
pre- or post-canon
Or combine it with Gem post-torture and/or time travel
GeminiTay & Smajor1995
Angst!
Elsa arc is a great setting for this one imo
or do it with them getting kidnapped together
Crossover Fandom
These are basically all me just being like. You two magic using characters. Go meet each other.
Time or dimension travel is great
different cultural norms
different forms of magic
Have them become fast friends! Or faster enemies...
handwaves are cool, you don't need an elaborate justification for how they meet (although if that's your thing feel free!)

Beltane
Welp guess who got home from traveling yesterday and forgot Beltane was today!
That's right, me
Guess who also decided to make a small celebration anyway because at least my intention is in it
Also me yeah
I'm proud of myself for doing this, especially with how open I've been with the celebration considering the fact that I'm living with my parents and they have no idea I'm a witch... I should probably tell me someday
Anyway I just wanted to check in and tell how I celebrated my first Beltane!
So I remembered by late afternoon what day it was and right after dinner I went for a ride around on my bike to enjoy the last rays of the sun and just really be outside and feel the summer in the air. On the way I noticed that several trees had been cut down and a lot of them still had flowers or leaves, so I thought of making a bouquet from them and it is stunning!!
When I got home I ran a bath, threw some wild flowers in there along with some espon salt and lit a lot of candles!
I dressed up in my nicest white dress and then started rearranging my alter which had been the same since Samhain, because i had a difficult time and I couldn't handle having to practice anything in a long period, hence why I forgot it was Beltane today.
In any case my alter is now super beautiful and I used a scarf I got while traveling to drape over the bookcase I'm using, then I got all of my crystals out and lit some more candles!
I think I'm going to make a quick tarot spread in a second but I'm still tired from getting home and I'll clean the rest of my room tomorrow so I'm ready for summer so I should get to bed soon
Blessed Beltane everyone, I hope you all have a good time!!!

Magickal Correspondences: August
Tumblr media
Word Origin: like July, the original name for the month of August was “Sextilis”, which translated to “sixth”. Originally, this month was 29 days, but changed to thirty with the Julius Calendar reform. When Augustus Caesar became the holy Roman Emperor, he took one day from February, and renamed the month “Augustus” in his honor. Instead of renaming September, he renamed August because it directly followed the month of July, which was named after Julius Caesar. Historical names for August include the Irish name “Lúnasa”, which is a version of Lughnasadh, named after the God Lugh. The Japanese name “hatsuki”, the Finnish name “elokuu” (“month of reaping”), the Anglo-Saxon name “Weodmonath” (“vegetation month”), the Frankish name “Aranmanoth” (“corn ears month”), and the Asatru name “Harvest”. Mythology: the month of August is sacred to the Goddess Hecate, the Greek Goddess of witchcraft, magic, the night, the moon, ghosts, and necromancy. She received her powers over heaven, earth, and sea from her parents the Titan Perses and the nymph Asteria. Hecate is associated with both good and evil, and was feared as well as worshipped by the ancient Greek people. Hecate witnessed the abduction of Persephone by Hades. Because of this knowledge, she went to Persephone’s mother Demeter, and helped search for her with a torch in hand. This myth lead to the creation of pillars called Hecataea, which stood at crossroads and doorways to keep away evil spirits. Traditions and Folklore: I have given a brief summary of the Goddess Hecate above, and now I will talk about the August rituals that are connected with her. Hecate is a Goddess that is also associated with the harvest, the first of which occurs in the month of August. In pagan thought, it is Hecate who has the power to bestow a bountiful first harvest, or destroy it. August 13th is named “Hecate’s Night” or “Night of Hecate as Goddess of Witches”. This night honors Hecate through ritual and worship. Speaking of the harvest, the major pagan and wiccan sabbat that occurs in the month of August is called Lammas or Lughnasadh, after the Celtic God Lugh. This is the first of the three harvest festivals, the other two being Mabon and Samhain. This was a time of thanksgiving a celebration in the old times, where everyone in the community got together to celebrate the harvest by feasting. There is a superstition surrounding Lammas, where farmers would let the first corn bread go stale and crumble it in the corners of the barn to make sure the harvest lasts through the winter and ensure a bountiful harvest. Moon: Sturgeon Moon, Barley Moon, Corn Moon, Herb Moon, Wort Moon, Wyrt Moon Zodiac: Leo, Virgo Element: Fire, Earth Gender: Masculine Sabbat: Lammas/Lughnasadh (August 1st) Deities: Ganesha, Thoth, Hathor, Diana, Hecate, Nemesis Animals: Lion, phoenix, sphinx, dragon, Crane, falcon, eagle Nature Spirits: dryads Trees: hazel, alder, cedar Colors: dark green, yellow, gold Flowers/Herbs: Chamomile, St. Johns wort, bay angelica, fennel, rue, orange, Sunflower, marigold, gladiolus Crystals: carnelian, emerald, jade, moonstone, peridot, sardonyx, topaz, tourmaline, cat’s eye, jasper, fire agate, diamond, sapphire Incense: Frankincense, heliotrope Characteristics, Influences, and Energies: animal magick, abundance, prophecy, prosperity, wisdom, harvest energy, appreciation, vitality, health, friendships

I love the faith that I have in not only my Gods, but my Spirit Team as well. Like, I sincerely know no weapon formed against me shall ever prosper because I'm well loved and very protected.
I'm not afraid to do hard things, and I'm capable of doing hard things myself. But those things I can't quite do yet? My Spirit Team will handle it until I get there and just. I love that for me!

FINALLY I FINISHED THIS BIH
alrighty, so I did the 6 fanarts challenge everyone is doing
This is a compilations of shows/movies I’ve seen and some that have been recommended to me. I’ll talk a little bit about each one given the situation that we’re in. I think that this challenge can also be a good source to find something to watch during this quarantine  uwu So lets start respectively!!
Jules Vaughn - Euphoria A show about a girl named Rue that has to overcome her issues with addiction while also developing a crush on Jules (WHO IS A TRANSGENDER GIRL IN THE SERIES AND REAL LIFE). This series is astonishingly beautiful. every single character on that series is so memorable and displays the teenage life and struggles in such a unique way and scenarios. although, i have to give a warning because explicit scenes may and will appear.
Misato Katsuragi - Evangelion An anime where the world is nearly destroyed and the remainings of humanity are battling against aliens angels that come from space. On the surface, it sounds like any other sci-fi movie, but bitch you thought, because it has a mindblowing narrative and symbolism of humanity, while also being funny and depressing as heck. Misato is in charge of directing all the moves and attacks to the Angels with Machines called Evas that only a really minuscule amount of people can control (yes, this served as inspiration for Pacific Rim), and she is so badass and cool and i want to be her. 11/10 would recommend, and if you don’t watch it I’ll hate you >:’c
The 10th Doctor - Doctor Who I personally have not watched this one, but i do have a friend that has, and every single episode she would have a breakdown because of how good, well-scripted and funnily dramatic it would get. I have seen a very few amount of episodes, and i could tell that that series is on another lever of creativity and understanding of time and space. The 10th doctor is known for being the favourite of the fandom, and from what I've seen he’s husbando material. Also, Queen Elizabeth watches doctor who, so if she does, so do you. Sorry I don´t make the rules, I just follow them.
La Sorcière - Kirikou Now lets talk about underrated movies. Kirikou tells the story of a really small child with the ability of running really fast from the moment he was born. It depicts African culture and beliefs with beauty and respect. La sorcière is the antagonist of Kirikou’s story and tribe, but also, she’s my favourite character. One thing that’s constant with me is that I tend to love antagonists, and if the antagonist is a woman with witchcraft literally dripping in gold, I am left with no choice but to stan.
Calcifer - Howl’s moving castle Ok, now time for one of my all time favourite movies. The first Ghibli movie that I watched, tells the story of Sophie, a girl that is cursed into looking like an elderly woman to match how she feels on the inside and treats herself. Since she can’t tell anyone about the spell she has, she goes to Howl, a wizard that may have the possibility of breaking the spell, the only problem is that Howl is a coward cinnamon roll and that he has a bind with Calcifer the smol fire demon, that Sophie must break first so that Howl can help her. Also, Sophie may or may not fall in love with Howl during the entire movie, like everybody does while watching that movie.
Queen Calanthe - The Witcher The witcher tells the story of Geralt, a witcher who goes around solving magical and non-magical problems around the land. On the witcher, there´s a Queen who is so badass and its dripping in gold, and loves her family so fiercely and I was also left with no choice but to stan. This series has such an incredible storytelling that a lot of people only notice once they get to episode 4, wich is so clever because once you get notice of what’s going on, the story takes a 180 turn. I have not finished it since its the most recent series that I started, but so far its lit and I live.
So that’s all, I think this is the longest post I’ve written, but if you read everything and got disappointed at my redaction and writing abilities, don’t worry, me too.
thanks for reading baiiiii <3

Do you take Ship requests? If so, could I get one for The Hobbit & Lotr? I'm a Bisexual Girl, an INFP, Autistic, Aquarius, Artist and Witch. I'm very introverted, incredibly chaotic and strange, and also intelligent, witty, existential, gentle, curious, creative and very determined. I'm very short and kind of dress like a Goth. I love cryptids, folklore, death and burial rituals, d&d, fantasy, literature, history and witchcraft/the occult. I draw, write, hoard books and cool knives. Thanks!
Tumblr media
Yes I do!! You sound awesome pls be my frend.  I am new to this, my first ship! It kinda turned into a small fic but I hope you like it!!!!! My imagination kinda went wild.
I ship you with Legolas. Now hear me out...
He’s an elf and people think he doesn’t show his emotions but we all know that’s not true. He’s just a bit...different about it.
When you first meet him, it’s a bit scary. He’s a prince, an elf and devastatingly beautiful. But as you get to know him during the first weeks of travel, you start to realise that that’s not all, he’s just as witty as you, his tongue sharp and you find yourself smiling to yourself as he quips back and forth with the surly dwarf Gimli. You don’t notice him noticing you then, though. He’s surprised by it, that he likes to make you smile and their banter becomes unstoppable, Legolas initiating most of it. And then he starts to include you. Asking you for confirmation when he slights Gimli, smiling devilishly. Or slowing to come to walk beside you and points out when Pippin’s trousers have a rip in the back, exposing his drawers and you both chuckle secretively, sharing jokes.
When the jokes turn to conversation, it’s about legends and myths and you trade them with fervor, drinking in all the knowledge and stories he’s heard in all his years. He enjoys telling you these tales and stories, seeing your eyes light up, spelling words or placenames in the Elven tongue for you when you take notes.
Maybe one night you’ll all be gathered around the fire and the atmosphere is friendly, everyone fine for now, settling nicely into comraderie despite some of the heartbreak and tragedy of the journey so far. You’ll have pulled out your notebook, one of the few ‘unnecessary’ items you allowed yourself to lug around Middle Earth. And you draw him, fine lines of a relaxed brow, his eyes closed as he sits by the fire, hair neat as always (How does he do it? You never see him comb it...). Until you find yourself staring, sketch half forgotten and you’re taking in his features, realising not for the first or last time how beautiful he is. Deep in thought, you wander, imagine sitting next to him, leaning your head on his shoulder, to reach and touch his hair. Trace a finger over the sharp point of his ear so different from yours.
You didn’t notice his eyes opening and finding yours until you become very aware that he is smiling, and staring, at you. You flush, caught and you reprimand yourself as you bring your gaze back to your notebook. Probably won’t finish that sketch.
-
Days later you find yourself in a similar situation, he’s there again, on the other side of the fire, talking low with Aragorn. His posture is similar and you decide to finish that drawing after all, taking some liberties with the lighting. You’re almost finished, shading some last details along the line of his lips when the notebook disappears from your sight and you hear Merry’s gasp of delight. He praises you loudly, drawing the attention of your companions. You stand now, protesting and trying to chase the damn Hobbit down but the notebook is being passed now from Hobbit to Hobbit, even Sam and Frodo joining in on admiring your work. You hope he hadn’t noticed and you turn, to check and of course... He’s already looking, and so is Aragorn. And Gandalf. Who is now standing behind a happily smiling Pippin as he holds the notebook and plucks it from his grasp. His eyes twinkle a bit as he looks, then finds your gaze.
You glare. Trying to threaten the wizard with...whatever. It doesn’t work and the smirks. Damn that meddling old man. He turns to Legolas who is now curiously regarding the goings on. His hands find the battered book, he’s held it often before as you shared stories with him but this time his eyes are wide with wonder, hands gentler as he almost cradles the paper in his hands. Your pulse is quick now, what will he say? Will he like it? Will he ask why?
His gaze raises from the book, then lowers back to your face and he smiles. Really, really smiles. Bright and open and you know you’re screwed now, this stupid crush now burning in your belly, flame fanned by his words.
“Thank you. It is an honor.” It’s all he says but you glow with it. You hadn’t meant for him to see it, anyone, really. But this, this is worth it.
“May... May I have it?” His question is hesitant but his smile remains and so does his gaze in yours. You think about it for a second, rue to give up your work but decide his smile is worth many pages of your work. You watch him deftly remove the page from its binding and folding it gently in some fabric before it disappears in his pack.
The book is returned to you and his fingers graze yours, lingering for a moment before he dips his head and gives you another small smile that does nothing to calm you and you all return to your seats, conversation starting up again, and some finding their way to your through the night to comment on your skill and of course some noisy Hobbits request their own portraits.
They are denied.
-
It’s another few days later when he finds you away from the group, sitting on a log in a small outcropping, notebook on your lap, re-reading some of your notes. He had approached you silently and you startle when he greets you.
You’re pretty sure by his smirk that he had intended to do so. Stupid haughty prince. But you forgive him easily as he sits comfortably next to you and peers at your notes.
“I wanted to thank you again, for your portrait. You are very skilled at your craft. I had thought your work with the pen was for word, not art.”
You dip your head in thanks and mutter the same.
“It’s alright to take pride in it. You are talented.” He is smiling again and you hope that the realisation that he only smiles this way at you is real and not a figment of your imagination.
“I wanted to repay your gift. Even if I did ask to have it.” He looks sheepish for a moment before procuring a cloth wrapped item from inside his robe and places it in your outstretched palm. It’s heavier than it looks and you place it on your notebook, unraveling the dark brown weave. A beautiful elven dagger lays before you, small blue stones reminiscent of his eyes adorn the handle. You find his eyes and you see him look hesitant, unsure. It’s not a look you’re used to seeing on him.
But despite that, you feel a surge of happiness within you. A gift. Such a beautiful gift. He had seen your drawing of him worthy of being repaid so and you grin up at him. Toothy and eyes crinkling and you can’t control it or stop it.
“Thank you. It is an honor.” You repeat his words from that night back to him and his grin suddenly matches yours.
“Shall I teach you how to use it?” He’s still smiling and he stands as you place your book on the log next to you, one hand clutching the dagger, the other reaching for his outstretched hand. Warmth grows on your cheeks as his fingers wrap around yours when he pulls you up and does not relinquish them.
“I’d love that.”
“Not as much as I.”

It’s good to be back witches! I have been away for a while but I’m back with this post for all christian witches out there!
BEGINNING MAGIC
5 HARD TRUTHS ABOUT MAGIC
Of the many laws of magic, there are a few that you’ll never see on a T-shirt or affirmation board. Here, we’ll cover some of the tough stuff: The harsh, unsettling, the ambiguous facts of living an enchanted life.
This article was inspired by some recent discussions of false positivity—that is, the habitual repetition of encouraging words and images. In short, false positivity means well, but it does harm by shutting down discussion of anything problematic. You can’t hide the truth forever—and when you try, it seeps out in sneaky and unexpected ways.
There are certain aspects of magic that are difficult to come to terms with. The purpose of airing them is not to discourage anyone from their path, but to counter some of the shallow advice and empty promises that the witchy blogosphere churns out.
It’s time for some straight talk about magic—some Swords to go with your Cups, some Rue with your Roses.
IT'S NOT FOR EVERYONE
It's not for everyone.
Can anyone become a Witch? Any honest answer to this question is complicated. In some ways, yes—the magical arts are open to all who seek them. In other ways, no. Some people lack the gifts, the learning—but most often, the dedication—to become effective practitioners of the Craft.
These two are the fundamental magical skills: The ability to alter reality through will. And, the ability to perceive things beyond the normal senses. These experiences are part of our natural state of being. They are, in a sense, the birthright of every conscious creature.
Yet these abilities are constrained on our earthly plane and must be located and cultivated. You need a strong will to accomplish this. It takes repetition. It takes humility. It often requires help from others—partners, plants, disparate parts of self—whose cooperation you must earn.
In short, excelling in magic is just like excelling in business or music or athletics. Not every aspirant will have what it takes. Talent only gets you so far. Hard work isn’t always enough. Sometimes you do everything right and still don’t get the results you want.
It’s not easy. It’s not for everyone (or at least, not all of the time).
REAL WITCRAFT ISN'T PHOTOGENIC
Real magic isn't photogenic.
Thick black eyeliner, a bespoke cloak, moon tattoos, and a table full of Amethysts—that’s what magick is made of, right? Sure, if you believe the internet. Like so many other things, witchcraft has been co-opted in recent years by lifestyle bloggers and tastemakers, advertisers and influencers. Super-stylish, just-edgy-enough witchy pics go hand-in-hand with the idea that magick is a piece of cake.
What’s wrong with enjoying all these highly performative images of witchcraft? Nothing! There’s no reason a person can’t be genuinely magical and also extremely good at self-presentation. Visual art is a kind of magic, too. However, let’s not make the mistake of confusing Instagram witches with the real thing.
It’s even possible for personal magic and social media to work at cross-purposes. Oversharing violates the principle of magical silence—the idea that talking about your workings can dilute or disperse their energy. People who endlessly photograph their working tools, altars, and ritual garments are arguably siphoning off some of their power for the sake of likes and followers.
Thinking back about the most powerful magic I’ve witnessed, much of it has been in the dark, among old or shabbily dressed people, with nary a smartphone in sight. The most eye-opening books I own are crappy dog-eared paperbacks that would look terrible in a tableau with a crystal pendant and a sprig of Rosemary. Pinterest offers no altar porn for the third eye…you’ll have to find those goodies on your own.
MAGIC IS DANGEROUS
Magic is dangerous.
With experience, I see a grain of truth in this warning. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies out there, folks. Different magicians have different opinions about whether spirit entities have an external reality or only dwell within the mind of the magic worker. Spirit entities are real, they have independent consciousness, and not all of them have your best interests in mind. The dead are asleep in their graves, according to God, and are not trying to communicate with you. And those who believe that they can believe in spirits, or even worse, control spirits, are placing themselves in a dangerous position.
Let’s look at the energy model of magic. Playing with spiritual technologies — certain forms of meditation, invocation, astral travel, etc. — can cause extreme and rapid shifts in your energy body. They can wreck your appetite and mess with your sex life. They can effect changes in your mood and sleep cycle that will disrupt every aspect of your daily existence.
Other hazards of the occult are more pedestrian: You can become arrogant (common!). You can turn into a colossal bore who only talks to plants (and even the plants wish you would shut up). You can invite the scorn of people who don’t approve of your path, people who formerly respected you. It’s hard to keep your spiritual and mundane lives in balance—but it’s absolutely necessary if you want to make magic a lifelong quest.
Anything worthwhile carries some risk. With magic, we are talking about nothing less than the rapid evolution of the soul…so it only makes sense than the risks would be commensurate with the reward. Only you can weigh the dangers and decide if it’s worth doing. (See #1: It’s not for everybody.)
YOU DON"T NEED TOOLS FOR EFFECTIVE SPELLWORK
You don't need tools.
As a people who identify with the label “witch,” we often find that people want to perform “spells” to manifest what they need or want in their lives. Spells are nothing more than prayers to God, the source of all power. People use candles or herbs or the like to help focus their own minds and strengthen their intentions. There is no power inherent in the spells or the tools themselves outside of their ability to help us focus our intention. God and our own intentions are where the power lies. So the ultimate goal is to realize where our power comes from, and to come to the point where we no longer need tools to help us focus. With this goal in mind, we begin to understand the importance of meditation, which helps us clear our minds and focus our intention. Meditation is the best tool you will have in your arsenal.
THERE ARE NO EXPERTS
There are no experts.
“We’re all apprentices in a craft where no one becomes a master.” Ernest Hemingway was referring to writing, but the same can certainly be said of the metaphysical arts.
Magic is a vast and mysterious topic. There’s a natural instinct to look up to people who have been at it longer than you, or who seem to be more sure of themselves. But while some people are objectively more accomplished, there’s nobody who’s got it all figured out. We are all grappling with the inexplicable mystery of consciousness. We are all grasping at forms we can’t possibly see the shape of.
It’s scary to realize that everybody else is basically flying blind. But it’s liberating, too. When you stop relying on others to show you the way, you can begin to truly explore your own power. In turn, there's nothing wrong with learning from the experience of others. You simply have to find your own groove.
And there you have it...five tough nuggets. I don't expect that this will become one of my most popular posts ever, but I'm happy that I published it. What are your hard-won magical truths?
