Can you imagine Haymitch watching the 74th games, seeing Katniss have her funeral for Rue? Imagine him thinking 'that was nice sweetheart, but they will never air that' cus they never aired his. He goes out to talk to some sponsors so he can get Katniss some comfort food, like Mags did for him and... They're talking about it. They SAW it, it ACTUALLY got aired. Do you think he looked around and locked eyes with Mags or Wiress maybe even Beetee? Cus Katniss did what he did back in the 50th games with Louella and Lou Lou but she was lucky enough to have it be seen.

Let's talk about flower related names in The Hunger Games trilogy and the significance of each plant.

Flowers in general have a variety of uses and meanings behind them, and the way each flower represents the character named after them is so cool.

Katniss

Katniss is an aquatic plant with arrowhead-shaped leaves. It was also a valuable food to Native Americans.

Primrose

Evening Primrose is a medicinial plant. They're delicate flowers that grow in the early spring.

Rue

Rue flowers represent sorrow and regret. They also have a culinary use.

Katniss also associates Peeta with dandelions. It's interesting how the three people she wanted to protect in the series are associated with or named after flowers.

Ah yes ! The Hunger Games, that book where Swamp-potato Farm-with-wild-pigs goes to fight kids from other parts of her country Bread with her love interest baker Type-of-bread Honeybird to protect her sister Flower !

And I’m not forgetting when she makes a stop to Bread’s capital, Capital, and gets mentored by Big-From-The-Enclosure River and Well-spoken Jewelry, and gets dressed by Cinnamon. Oh and in the arena! When Swamp-potato teams up with Street, gets hunted down by Superhero-Company, Sparkle, Wise and Tree !Well, Street gets killed by Company, and Sprout avenges her by saying Swamp-potato buy it was good ! And in the end, when she saves both her’s and Type-of-bread’s life by threatening to kill themselves, and gets home to her friends Wind Tree and Pearl Look-under !

Ah i loved that book.

i am so happy for the increase of people like Clarisse La Rue in the new show (and im ignoring the people who don't like her) (also, i have not watched the show yet, in support of Palestine's boycott against Disney+ and am currently too sick to figure out the safest way to 🏴‍☠️) because she is such a good character and i would cry for a well-written book/fanfic series from her pov

like. she truly is the epitome of "my dad is the worst man alive and i am his favorite daughter" and i super respect the decision that this adaptation has towards going towards the whole "in my version, Clarisse will never win her father's approval because she isn't his son" sentiment. not to mention, the decision to couple that by having her be cast as a person of color in addition to her pre-existing character having been someone who has been frantically trying find the opportunity to prove herself, being indirectly one-upped by white boy Percy coming into camp day 1 having fought a minotaur. the intersectionality of her misdirected fury is impeccable. fantastic, no notes

but im also just psyched for her and Chris Rodriguez and i really wish they had more focus in the books. because they are as fantastically amazing as all the other S-tier ships in the series. i think they could even rival Percabeth (notice: i didn't say "could beat", i said "could RIVAL", no Percabeth fans send me hate), honestly, if Clarisse/Chris had been given a chance to somehow be of focus. because you're telling me angry, overlooked Daddy Issues(TM) Clarisse gets to find love with Chris "calm and patient while caring greatly for Clarisse" Rodriguez? the son of Hermes who said "fuck Camp Halfblood, fuck these gods" and went to Kronos and Luke's side? who went into the labryrinth and was driven to insanity? by King Minos himself? who Clarisse was so gentle and sympathetic for, even when others thought he might be a lost cause? even when others debated even helping him because he was "the enemy"? who, after Dionysus (and lets be honest, also Clarisse, because she was his caretaker until he could be brought to Dionysus) cured Chris of his insanity, this guy saw what a catch Clarisse was to have in your life, seeing her as someone sweet and loving (because she can be! she is!!), that who she is as a person single-handedly conVINCED HIM TO LEAVE KRONOS' SIDE AND COME BACK TO CAMP??? SO HE COULD BE HAVE A CHANCE TO BE WITH HER??

their love is so iconic. and that's just the one big moment we get from their story; im so sure there is more that we dont get to see all due to them not being focused on in the story. im so glad theyre still together and so in love. its what Clarisse deserves. i hope the show shines a light on how powerful their love is too. Chris fixes none of Clarisse's tragic father-induced issues, but it helps to remember that at least she has Chris, and im so glad she does. Clarisse is a warrior that deserved a great love-story

overseers, fieldcalls & the distancing of community: HCing intra-District dynamics

okay i think i’ve mentioned already that i think District 11 is heavily influenced by Black american culture. i think it’s inspired by enslaved people/sharecoppers in the deep south & how they revolted constantly against plantation owners & then later Jim Crow laws. i also don’t think Suzanne made those connections accidentally.

however!!! these are just HCs!!! i am not Suzanne Collins’ bestie & i don’t know what’s going on in her mind when it comes to the world she’s built. these are just some headcanons that i’ve made because District 11 & how close it resembles the history i’ve grown up learning is very interesting. if you don’t agree that’s totally fine. but i just think about how …

… during the slave era, overseers were often poor white men put in charge of driving output from enslaved laborers. while these positions often proved to be more lucrative than attempting to cultivate farms themselves or find employment in a environment where labor could be sourced for free, they came alongside a lot of pressure.

due to intense demand put on them from the wealthier plantation owners & feelings of being jilted out of the opportunity to accumulate their own wealth vis a vis ownership of their own slaves, overseers had a tendency to resort to unnecessarily cruel or debilitating punishments. they viewed enslaved people as subhuman, and so treated them worse than animals.

most overseers where white. but some plantation owners had Black overseers. it was thought that enslaved people listen better to someone that looked like them, and show the plantation owners in a sympathetic light for giving a Black enslaved man such a enviable position.

but it would actually just further divide the community. providing a Black enslaved man with better clothing, housing, food and privileges in exchange for him losing favor with the collective. the disdain he’d be viewed with in turn would widen the gap, and he’d become so resentful of being ostracized that he’d be unlikely to take the whip/gun and turn it onto the real enemy: the plantation owner. he could become as violent & self-serving as his white predecessors, and crack down harder on the people that used to be his community out of jealousy or hatred or betrayal.

“so what does this have to do with District 11?”

well. my theory is that there were a select few people in the district that were used as overseers for the various crop fields. it was seen as a “promotion”, and they were called “superintendents”. these men & women would be elevated to positions of power over the other people in the District, and given more pay along with better housing/food/clothing. their families would often be spared from having to work the fields themselves, and they would be considered the “lower middle class” of the District. the only people richer would be the peacekeepers, the handful of people that ran stores, and the politically elite that worked in the justice building.

but these “promotions” would be seen by the rest of the District as bootlicking to the Capitol, and selling out to the people that actively starved & oppressed their District. to take one of these superintendent positions would be to forfeit their position in the community, but to deny it would be to deny their families a chance at a better life.

a few superintendents turn to substance abuse to deal with the weight of the decision, and some become recluses from shame. but some become cruel & contemptible.

on the contrast, there is a position in the district known as a “fieldcall”. now fieldcalls have different demographics depending on the crop they’re assigned to. the fieldcalls that work in the orchards, for example, are usually children because they can climb faster & higher than a grown adult would be able to. fieldcalls in the sugar cane fields are usually the taller people in the district—mostly men, but the occasional woman too—so that they’ll be visible over the tall-growing cane leaves. the job of a fieldcall is mostly in the name—they’re there to call the start & end of the day, and they tend to lead the work hymnals that people in District 11 sing to pass the work day.

these “sorrow songs” are useful for a lot of things. they were a way that the people of District 11 kept their culture & their spirits strong even under ruthless injustices. a powerful form of musical expression and resistance, District 11 would use these songs for everything from plans of revolt to ending a work day to mourning as a community. the cleverness & musicality of being a fieldcall is a highly respected position, as they’re usually the main source of important information for the rest of the District. it’s a heavy burden & respected honor to be the position of a field call.

and whereas being a superintendent is a title bestowed by the Capitol & is treated as such, the fieldcall is a position given to someone by their community. all it takes is a strong singing voice & a little spark of cunning for people to then look to you for the music & as a source of information.

of course, how the District treats superintendents is exactly what the Capitol intends. and i can picture there always being a strong tension between fieldcalls & superintendents. someone ostracized by their community vs someone openly revered by it.

just�� the idea of fieldcalls having a tendency to be targeted by superintendents, and then Rue (who says she whistles to let people know the end of the work day) being killed by a Capitol figurehead (Marvel being from a Career district) kind of gave me the idea & now i can’t stop thinking about it.

so I read The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes at least a year ago and I just saw the movie today. And I have a crazy theory that I want to share because I haven't seen anyone else talk about it. My immediate first thought when I finished the book and at the end of the movie was wait...Lucy Gray almost definitely survived and probably made it to District 13. What if she is President Coin? She's the same age as Snow so she'd 100% still be alive when Katniss goes to the Hunger Games. Also Snow and Coin HATE each other and Coin was super desperate to take Snow down, I always kinda thought it was weird in Mockingjay how it was almost like they knew each other because they seemed to have such personal vendettas against each other, the way they hated each other felt a little too personal. And towards the end of Mockingjay, after the rebels take the president's mansion, Katniss finds Snow in the rose greenhouse and he tells her not to trust Coin and that Coin won't hesitate to betray her. And then in district 13 everything is gray, everyone wears gray and there is no singing and dancing, which Katniss points out and thinks is super odd.

Idk I also just really like the idea that the last thing Lucy Gray told Snow was that she was going to get Katniss and (if she is Coin) she DOES get Katniss when she rescues her from the arena in Catching Fire. Also remember Snow died because he was laughing so hard he choked on his blood after Katniss killed Coin instead of executing him (also the fact that she wanted to have him executed in from everybody, just like the hanging tree!!!), I always thought it was so bizarre because why was it that funny to him? It makes sense if she was Lucy Gray. When Katniss killed her instead, Snow won- HE convinced Katniss to do it, HE killed Coin (and he convinced someone who was definitely somehow connected to the Covey, after she tried killing him in the woods outside 12 just like how his father died!!!!!). He finally won the battle between him and Lucy Gray. No wonder he laughed so much. Snow lands on top.
