Warmer weather arrived in Moonwood Mill, and the blanket of snow that had lain heavily over the landscape all winter began to slowly melt. This was much anticipated by the entire Scholl family, who were tired of staying indoors.

With each passing day, Esther grew larger and she eagerly wished for the pregnancy to be over soon so she could focus on preparing this year’s harvest. When Ruben noticed her worry about not having enough time, he offered to take over the main responsibilities on the farm, at least until the baby was born. This made Esther feel calmer and she appreciated that he was willing to take on double the workload.

There was a lot to be done, so Ruben decided to involve the children. He always tried to mix play into the farm chores so that the children wouldn’t get bored so easily. He didn’t like being a serious and strict father and noticed that the children appreciated this.

But when it came time to actually perform the important chores on the farm, Billy always miraculously managed to disappear from all responsibility. Bertie was more willing and since he was very careful and quiet, he worked well with the animals who responded positively to his gentle handling of them. Norma appreciated that at least one of her brothers was interested in the animals and gladly taught him how to brush the cow and feed the chickens.

St Pauli
St Pauli is likely to soon be quite a rude awakening In the event you begin hoping that a corporate district. The quarter east of descending and the guts to the Elbe is rough around the edges along with also daubed in neon and graffiti. The Reeperbahn is well known, along with also its own particular pornography shops, a parade of strip nightclubs and prostitutes need mention. However, you might not have more fun at a particular date on this particular street, no matter St Pauli ambiance, and also your preference in music which makes it an excellent place.
  Hamburg Rathaus
Hamburg’s city hall can be as stirring as they have come, also reflects generosity and the wealth of a Germany towards the conclusion of this 19thcentury. The structure to the facade is Neo-Renaissance, and also the tower at the center adheres to 112 meters. There are exhibits indoors, which can be free to view and also you’re able to proceed right to the courtyard, that includes a fountain. Or you may pay a fee and choose an hourlong tour. The inner comprises more of a Historicist design as a new room was discovered from the tower at 1971, plus a few of its points would be that the number of chambers indoors: 647 at the very final count.
  Speicherstadt
Work began to get its port when Hamburg combined the habits zone in 1888. Storage centers were constructed and residential quarters around the Zollkanal have removed also a Gothic structure on oak piles. Shielded as a World Heritage Site, Town or the Speicherstadt of Warehouses comes with a feeling all of its own, which is enough to walk through those canyons, crossing the canals and scattering the ribbon that is glistening onto the facades. A number of the warehouses have been changed into flats, and the others are guest attractions, even while their purpose still fills, keeping coffee, tea, coffee, and spices.
  Kunsthalle Hamburg
A walk from the Hauptbahnhof, between Außenalster and also your Binnenalster, is among the largest and wealthiest museums of Germany. It’s no exaggeration to state that the Kunsthalle has enough to keep you under its charm for a day: There are masters such as Goya, Rembrandt, Rubens, Lucas Cranach younger and Canaletto. Subsequently, Max Liebermann, Caspar David Friedrich, Manet, Degas, and Gauguin are a Few of the luminaries from the gallery. Stepping into the gallery and artwork that is modern the titles keep coming, such as Francis Bacon, Paul Klee, Kirchner Picasso, Moving Forward to Tracey Emin, Warhol, and Joseph Beuys.
  HafenCity
HafenCity can be. Founded on land at the Elbe, HafenCity will continue to grow producing houses for occupations and 12,000 people to get as much as 40,000. Already a chunk of this interface was regenerated, and away from the legacy quarter that the structure is cutting-edge and creative. Think apartment complexes glistening office cubes and leisure conveniences, all equipped to their waterfront location with panache and sensitivity. Up to now, the sight would be.
  Planten un Blomen
Planten un Blomen, 4-7 hectares of botanical plantations and lawns, gardens, ponds, greenhouses are going to be next to the top In the event that you had to create a set of the best parts of Europe. From the green folds of the park may be. Allow time for you to poke the five greenhouses: the greatest, the Schaugewächshaus contains plants from Mediterranean climes and comprises lavender trees, palms, and laurels. Just could be teeming with succulent plants out of desert climates, that your Kakteenhaus. Away from the park in summer, once the garden is in blossom, the apothecary is fragrant and the musical viewer injects magical into the spectacle.
  Jungfernstieg
At Hamburg’s industrial and dynamic center, Jungfernstieg can be really just actually a waterfront promenade in the Binnenlaster. The name arises from a historical heritage of wealthy Hanseaten families parading their unwed daughters (Jungfern) for eligible bachelors. Landward you can find shops and flagship shops just such as the Alsterhaus in Historicist structures and neoclassical. Begin to see the white arcade which outlines the Kleine Alster off into the other side, built at the exact center of the 19thcentury. Fronting that the Binnenlaster is actually just a patio where you are able to bask in sunlight in summer check out the waterjet or tuck to a cafe and coffee (Kopenhagener or even Franzbrötchen) in the glass Alster Pavillion.
  Außenalster
A little bit of information about Hamburg is this one city has more bridges than Venice, Amsterdam and London combined. A number of the cross over the tangle of rivers and canals which feed into this lake’s end at their city’s midpoint. The beaches of this Außenalster, separated out of the Binnenalster that is more compact by the Kennedy Bridge, are just one park. Joggers arrive at squeeze into their morning practice and friends match for coffee at a few of the kiosks and pubs on the banks. Rivers at the top components of the lake and All those canals float through the most quarters of Hamburg. You’re going to have the ability to employ a kayak or rowboat in Osterbekkanal to navigate the entire city at away when the weather hot.
  Treppenviertel Blankenese
Catch the S Bahn or ferry into the quaint neighborhood ten km from town center above the bank of the Elbe. Treppenviertel literally means”Stairs Quarter” and that is where this area’s allure comes in. That the Treppenviertel is actually really just insanity of winding alleys, interlinked by stairways and surrounded by exquisite houses. These accumulate to a lot significantly more than 5,000 steps, and also do not be shocked if interest leads one to walk all of them until you’ve got to prevent for refreshment beside your Elbe. The Blankenese is among those places in the lake.
When to visit in Hamburg
Summer strikes at Hamburg and departs in September. Between the weeks, then you can get fine sight-seeing requirements (and fantastic weather for sanctuary cruises). The beer gardens by the lake will likely probably be filled, and street festivals would soon probably be ubiquitous. April and May might possibly be better, together using room prices and more silent museums and museums, if you’d like a vacation. Xmas is a significant event in Germany, therefore breaks could function.

As coisas estranhas vão acontecendo.

Home Entertainment Consumer Guide: December 27, 2018
10 NEW TO NETFLIX
"2 Fast 2 Furious" "Apocalypse Now" "Avengers: Infinity War" "Baby Mama" "The Fast and the Furious" "The Innocents" "Kill the Messenger" "The Little Hours" "Maps to the Stars" "The Theory of Everything"
8 NEW TO BLU-RAY/DVD
"Assassination Nation"
I'm only human and so there's a bit of an impulse to include a release in this column on which I'm quoted on the cover, even if the movie itself is something of a mixed bag. The quote "'Mean Girls' meets 'The Purge" is from my Sundance viewing of this divisive genre film, and is more descriptive than praising. What's been interesting to watch about the conversation around this abrasive, incendiary castigation of internet culture is that I have been very lonely in my middle ground opinion. I like its ideas more than its execution, but find it fascinating how many people either LOVE or HATE this movie. Honestly, we need more movies like that—movies that provoke conversation and debate. So you should see this not because I'm quoted on the cover but because you should pick a side ... or join me in the neutral zone.

"Bad Times at the El Royale"
This is another movie that people seemed to either embrace or abhor and I finished with a shoulder shrug. Maybe that's not fair. I mostly liked Drew Goddard's single-setting bloodbath, but I'm stunned that anyone sees enough to like or hate here to include in either ten best or ten worst lists for the entirety of 2018. On the positive side, the ensemble is fantastic, especially Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Bridges, and Chris Hemsworth. It's never boring, weaving several subplots on a very bad night at the El Royale hotel into one backstabbing tapestry. It's also too long, too unfocused, and slips through your fingers once it's over. There's a tighter, smarter version of "El Royale" in this one that could have been great. But this one is still pretty good—available On Demand now and on Blu-ray on 1/1.

"Fahrenheit 11/9"
Did Michael Moore's latest provocation influence the election as he so clearly hoped it would when he dropped it in the heat of the season? Maybe. Probably not, though. The fact is that Moore doesn't have the impact he once did, but should that be the only way we judge him as a filmmaker? As an influencer? It will be interesting to see how his most overtly political films like this one stand up with a couple decades of history behind them. For me, the best pieces of "Fahrenheit 11/9" don't focus on the Trump Presidency but the various stories of the last few years that led to the voter apathy that was arguably the biggest reason he won. And, say what you will about this film's lack of focus, there's a great mini-doc buried within this film about the Flint water crisis that you really should see.

"The Predator"
After the TIFF premiere of Shane Black's latest reboot/sequel to the hit '80s sci-fi/action film, I suspected that I would be in the minority of critics who enjoyed it but didn't expect it to be quite so drastic. I stand by my 2am take in Canada that this is a fun action movie that understands what worked about the original film while also taking some of the same ideas in a new direction. No, it's not going to be anyone's favorite movie of 2018, but it's a quick, enjoyable rental on a Saturday night, and it works even better at home than in the middle of the night in Toronto.

"Schindler's List"
Only this column could go from "The Predator" to "Schindler's List," but that's how we roll at the HECG (and the byproduct of alphabetical listings). For the 25th anniversary of one of the best films of the '90s, Universal has upgraded Steven Spielberg's Oscar winner with a 4K release that reminds viewers why this movie was so rapturously praised when it came out in 1993. Given 4 stars by Roger on its initial release, he didn't wait long to put it in the Great Movies pantheon, and it's a movie that has held up remarkably well. The 4K release is accompanied by a new documentary called "Schindler's List: 25 Years Later," adding to the sense that this is one of the essential 4K Blu-ray releases of 2018.

"A Simple Favor"
Paul Feig's mystery/comedy looked like a disaster before it was released. It was coming out at a time of year when studios are known for dumping movies that they don't know what to do with, and it didn't play any fests or get much in the way of critics screenings. And then it dropped and most people were pleasantly surprised. A reasonably big hit (almost $100 million worldwide), "A Simple Favor" filled a hole in storytelling for adults that Hollywood simply doesn't care about as much as they used to. In a time when the mid-budget movie is disappearing, it feels like everything is a part of a franchise or a low-budget indie. The mid-budget filmmakers went to TV. And so it's so heartening to see a solid mid-budget flick that offers a night of entertainment for grown-ups away from Netflix. I'm a little less high on the flick than everybody else (I think Blake Lively is amazing but the movie sags a bit when she's absent), but it's totally worth a rental.

"Starman"
When the acolytes of John Carpenter talk about the horror icon, they often stick solely to, well, his horror films. How many pieces can the internet produce about the greatness of "Halloween," "The Thing," or underrated pics like "The Fog" and "Prince of Darkness"? Lost in a lot of the talk about Carpenter is what is actually his highest-grossing film outside of Mike Myers, 1984's "Starman." This has always been a film that I hold close to my heart as I was nine when it came out and, well, that's a good age for this movie. It's an underrated film with a truly great performance from Jeff Bridges. As Roger wrote 34 years ago, "Actors sometimes try to change their appearance; Bridges does something trickier, and tries to convince us that Jeff Bridges is not inhabited by himself."

"Venom"
Ah, "Venom." Is this smash hit a good movie? Noooo. It's clunky and weird. And yet there's something in here that almost brings it together and that's the totally committed lunacy from Tom Hardy. Whether he's talking to the symbiote inhabiting his body or eating a live lobster out of the tank in which he's sitting, there's something inspired in so many of his choices. Sadly, the rest of the movie totally pales in comparison, including something I didn't think was possible: flat performances from Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams. As much as I don't want to see "Venom" again, I'll be curious about "Venom 2" just to see if Hardy's energy can be featured in a project that deserves it.

After Charlie, Edwin, and Sylvia arrived, they spent the whole day together catching up on everything that had happened since they last saw each other. The newcomers were surprised by all the children in the house. When Edwin and Sylvia left, only Norma had been born. Charlie was also happy to meet his nieces and nephews, even though he wasn't particularly used to children and didn't know how to behave around them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the warmth of the fire and the conversations of all the family members around her, Frances began to feel increasingly drowsy, feeling her eyelids growing heavier. The fatigue she felt was unlike anything she had experienced before, and she made the others aware that she probably needed to go to bed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frances was assisted to bed, and everyone gathered around her. Neither Esther, Charlie, nor Edwin wanted to leave her side, as they understood that their mother's time was running out. The atmosphere was heavy, and everyone spoke in hushed tones so as not to disturb Frances as she drifted in and out of consciousness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her breaths became increasingly strained, and everyone understood that it wouldn't be long now. She had lived a long and eventful life, but despite that, saying goodbye was difficult. Time passed slowly, and night crept in. Eventually, with all the remaining family members gathered around her bed, Frances took her final breath.

One early morning, the Scholl family received visitors. The only one who had known about the upcoming visit was Esther. She had been relieved when Edwin had promptly responded to her letter, promising to arrive at Moonwood Mill as soon as possible. With an excited feeling coursing through her body, she woke her mother, promising her that she had a surprise in store.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frances was fragile, but still wanted to go out to welcome the newcomers. She could hardly believe her eyes when she saw her two sons standing before her. She hadn't spoken to Charlie since they left Brindleton Bay in haste, and Edwin had disappeared into the night without a proper goodbye. It felt surreal to see them standing before her after all these years.

"My boys," Frances said tenderly, wrapping her arms around her returning sons.
They hugged her tightly back, both with a sense of guilt weighing on them. Their mother was noticeably much older than last time, and they understood why Esther had wanted them to hurry. They should of course have visited her long ago to apologize for how they left things, but Frances reassured them that the most important thing was that they were here now.

Even Sylvia had chosen to come along, as she too felt guilty towards her brother and wanted to make amends. But as soon as Ruben saw her, he immediately wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug.
"Aren't you angry with me?" she said, surprised.
"Of course not," he said, hugging her even tighter. "I've just missed you."

Esther and Ruben were happy to share the news with the children that they were going to have another sibling. Bertie was too young to understand the significance of what they were telling him, but since he was always cheerful, he was positively inclined.

Norma, on the other hand, couldn't share her parents' joy. She thought two brothers were already enough, and to get another one? She shuddered at the thought.

Against all odds, it was to Billy that she turned to complain about the news. As usual, he was out in the woods doing god knows what, but for once she managed to find him.
"Have you heard the news?" she sighed.
"No, but I guess you're going to tell me," he replied sarcastically while tearing up grass with his hands.

"We're going to have another sibling," she explained.
"Oh?"
"You don't care? The baby will get all the attention, and Mom and Dad will have even less time for us. Besides, they can barely afford things as it is, another child will just mean a lot of new expenses."

"Let the adults worry about all that," Billy said. "The way I see it, we’re the oldest so we get to boss around the others. The more younger siblings we have, the better."
Norma couldn’t help but laugh. Her brother was the strangest person she knew. He could be annoying and irritating, but sometimes he was actually quite entertaining. Besides, it reassured her that he didn’t seem to think it was the end of the world to get a new sibling.

Now that Billy had grown older, Norma found her little brother increasingly annoying with each passing day. He had been a nuisance even as a toddler, but it was getting out of hand. He constantly stole her things and interfered with everything she did.
Tumblr media
The only times she could escape him were when she locked herself in her bedroom. Thankfully, she didn't have to share a room with either Billy or Bertie and often retreated there when she felt especially hurt by her brothers. Billy used to be fun to be around, but nowadays it seemed like he was only interested in teasing her.

Her father, however, had unrestricted access to her room, and he always noticed when Norma withdrew. Whenever a particularly intense argument arose, he always made time to talk to her about what had happened.
"What was it this time?" he asked in his most patient voice. "I could hear you two fight from a mile away."
"He's getting on my nerves," she said, doing her best to hold back the tears. "I wish he didn't exist."

"I don't believe you," Ruben said, wiping away a tear that fell down her cheek. "You might not get along that well while you're young, but when you're older, you'll be grateful for your brothers."
Deep down, Norma knew he was right. She hugged her father and promised him she would continue to try to have patience with Billy, even though she wished she didn't always have to be the oldest and most mature of the siblings.

Esther's pregnancy was coming to an end and she was more than ready. She hated being tired and unproductive when there was so much that needed to be done and being pregnant didn't help in the slightest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the coming days, she went into labour and gave birth to their second son. The birth was without problems and they gave him the name Albert David Scholl. He was a small child with a head full of blonde locks.

A few hours after the birth Esther and Ruben brought the newborn into the living room to let Norma and Billy meet their new sibling. He was so tiny that Norma refused to hold him since she was afraid to break him. Instead, she and Billy gave him the nickname Bertie and it quickly stuck.

In the coming month, a blanket of snow settled over Moonwood Mill. It was the first snowfall the Scholl family experienced in their new house. The crops went into dormancy and there were suddenly not as many chores that had to be done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The house was drafty and cold so they used the fireplace to the highest capacity. As winter became more prominent, it was difficult to be outdoors. Mostly, the family chose to stay in most of the time and tried to come up with different activities to keep the children busy. The living room quickly became the place where they spent most of their time - with the fire making it the warmest room in the house.

The first lookbook of the 1930s! Rubens's clothes are simple and he prefers to wear a hat to almost every occasion. If he were better off, he would dress up more but because of his financial situation he rather use his money for something more necessary than to spend it on clothes.
Everyday: Vest and pants / Shoes (my wedding stories) Formal: Jacket / Pants* / Hat Going out: Outfit and hat Going out 2: Suit / Hat Sleepwear: Nightgown Summer: Outfit  Winter: Coat / Pants / Hat

Norma grew up quickly and soon entered childhood. Since she was a proper and responsible child, she looked forward to being able to help out on the farm properly. She took all of her chores very seriously because she was aware of how hard her parents struggled every day and wanted nothing more than to help them out and hopefully ease their burden.

One day, Esther asked to speak to Ruben. Something had been weighing on her mind recently and she was finally ready to open up to her husband.
"I'm pregnant again," she announced and for the first time, the thought of a pregnancy didn't bring them immediate joy.
Even though the harvest had been good, another child would put a strain on their savings and Rubens's unemployment didn't help the situation. Several years had passed without him being able to get a job and he felt ashamed of not being able to contribute to his constantly growing family.

The fact that they would soon have another mouth to feed made Ruben decisive and he decided to try his luck elsewhere. The next day, he got dressed in his finest suit and took the train an hour away to the larger neighbouring town of Copperdale.

Despite spending the whole day asking around, he did not succeed. There seemed to be no work for him here, not even with a low revenue. But it wasn't only Ruben who roamed the street. As the hours passed he noticed other men asking the same question as him and understood that more families than his own were affected by the recession.

With each rejection he got, Ruben became more discouraged. He knew that it would be difficult to get a job, but not this difficult. Even though he felt disheartened he didn't want to give up so easily and decided to continue to visit Copperdale every morning and be the first in line if any position would open up.

A few days after the birth, Norma got to meet her little brother Billy for the first time. She was immediately fascinated by him, especially since she hadn't met any other children this small before. From now on she was no longer the youngest.

There were now four members in the Scholl family. They still didn't have much money at their disposal, but the fall harvest had been satisfactory and they had high hopes of at least making it through the winter months.
