You have taken refuge in a smelly apartment that smells of pee and mold, there are sheets of newspaper scattered everywhere on the floor, on the mattress, even on some shelves, you exchange a silent look, then Joel begins to search the apartment for any other humans or any of those things, but luckily it's empty. You, on the other hand, look for food, medicine or anything else that could be useful to you, you only find toothpaste, soap and baby skin oil and then as you look around, you also find some clothes, they seem to be your size, maybe the men's ones are a little bigger, but might work.

Joel nods for you to go to the bathroom first and then get changed; the bathroom is in terrible condition as the pieces are rusty and the water comes out brown from the pipes, you give up on washing yourself, you take the oil you found before and with some paper you have in your backpack you clean yourself as best you can. You put on a sweater and a padded jacket, a pair of sweatpants and you change your shoes, your trusty sneakers are now worn out. Your hair is a mess, but you don't know how to clean it, you look in the bathroom for something to fix it, but you only find a broken comb with broken and rusty teeth, you sigh as you rummage through your backpack again and find an old hair tie of yours from at least fifteen years ago at the bottom, it's a rubber band with a star once silver today it only retains the shape of a star, you smile. So many memories!

You tie your hair in a high ponytail, tuck a couple of strands behind your ears, and head out. When you reach Joel, you find him sitting at the kitchen table handling his switchblade, he’s cleaning it with a cloth and you notice some blood stains, you frown when you see this scene. Joel notices your presence because he looks up at your face, then at your clothes. His expression is serious, but his eyes are tired.

“Do you want to get some sleep?” you suggest, walking over to the table and sitting down in front of him. “You can use this to clean yourself up a bit,” you say, offering him the oil you yourself had used earlier. “The water doesn't work.” you add causing Joel to snort and shake his head “I found some clothes for you too, maybe they're a little big, but I think they'll fit you, at least by eye.” you continue, Joel nods with his head down, “then you can rest, maybe... give me the rifle and you can rest a bit, you look very tired.”

He looks at you perplexedly, “Can you shoot?”

“No, but...”

“Then no!” he exclaims, putting away his knife and throwing the rag somewhere out of your sight. “I’m going to change, if you see or hear anything, call me. Don't scream, come near the door and I'll come right away. When I'm finished go to sleep, I'll stay here.” he adds getting up from the chair and taking the oil you brought him.

“There is no noise, nothing that suggests anyone's presence, maybe you can change and go to rest, I'll stay here and if there is any noise or presence I'll call you.” you offer yourself.

He takes a deep breath, “You're not in any condition to do these guard shifts yet, darlin’.” A sudden shiver at hearing that petname runs down your spine. “When you’re fully strong, you will. Joel comes out of the bathroom and looks at you, you look so thin from the last time, your hair is tied in a high ponytail, you seem to be so different from that strong and determined young woman.

Joel sighs, making you hear him turn towards him with a questioning look. “Let's go get some rest,” Joel says. “There's a room over there with a bed that we could maybe share if that's not a problem.”

You shrug, “No, but what about the guard?” you ask, turning toward the window.

“Don't worry,” he replies, shrugging.

You lie down next to each other, wondering if you've slept next to him before or if you're just letting yourself be influenced by the situation and what you think you remember.

“Go to sleep.” Joel mutters behind you. “Whatever you’re thinkin’ about, you’ll think about it later.”

“Joel, do I have a family somewhere?” you ask softly, as he sighs heavily and then rolls over onto his back, “They're gone, are they?” you insist.

He places an arm behind his head like a pillow, then looks you in the eye. “No, I'm sorry, darlin’.”

“Did they die in these months?” you ask again.

“No, a long time ago. I didn't know them, if you wanted to ask me that too. But” he says getting up from the bed and digging in his backpack, from there he takes out a wallet “this is yours and there's a picture of the three of you inside,” why Joel has your wallet is a mystery that you'll figure out later, now you want to know about your parents, you want to see them. The three of you are smiling big, then something clicks inside your head and your expression is sure to have changed, you feel Joel calling you and shaking you, but you are lost in that memory, that terrible painful memory, in that moment when you recognized their bodies extracted from the wreckage of your car. Your breath is taking away and tears are completely blurring your vision, “No, no.” you moan, “Mommy, Daddy...” you moan again with your lips parted and tears now streaming down your cheeks, Joel immediately joins you in the middle of the bed, almost shaking you by the shoulders, calling your name first softly then abruptly when he realizes he can't shake you and distract you from that memory. When you look into his eyes again, you are in a valley of tears and your chest is shaking with sobs. Joel hugs you tightly, enveloping you in his muscular arms where you abandon yourself crying even harder.

You fall asleep in Joel's arms, your back against his chest, his hand holding yours, his angular nose in your hair, his breathing and a hand moving your hair lull you into a confused and distant world.
