In a way, your game 2 and 3 strategy must be equally as good or better than your game 1 strategy. You must decide: Do I go all in on turn one? Do I mulligan to a safer opener? What do I name with Cabal Therapy? What is my role in this game?"

"In similar deck vs. similar deck matchups, there are a couple of things that you want to look at to figure out what role to play:

1. Who has more damage? Usually he has to be the beatdown deck.

2. Who has more removal? Usually he has to be the control deck.

3. Who has more permission and card drawing? Almost always he has to be the control deck.

If you are the beatdown deck, you have to kill your opponent faster than he can kill you. If you are the control deck, you have to weather the early beatdown and get into a position where you can gain card advantage."

When I tell you that NEVER in my like...idk...18 years in fandom had I ever come across someone else who said the shit the internet makes me say at least once a week now I don't think I'm exaggerating. What does the headassery that is fandom in the year 2019 make me scream off the rooftops every other second? Well of course it's that THIS SHIT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU. IT'S NOT YOURS. YOU DO NOT GET A SAY. DON'T LIKE IT? CHANGE THE CHANNEL. IF YOU WENT TO A RESTAURANT AND BOUGHT DINNER BUT DIDN'T LIKE IT, YOU SIMPLY WOULDN'T RETURN AND SPEND YOUR MONEY AGAIN. YOU CERTAINLY WOULDN'T STORM INTO THE KITCHEN AND FIRE THE CHEF/OWNER OF THE PLACE. YOU DONT GET TO TELL A CREATOR WHAT THEY DO WITH THEIR STORY OR CHARACTERS AND YOU CERTAINLY DONT KNOW EITHER BETTER THAN THEM. It truly is not that hard of a concept.

I never got past s5 of spn, but from what I've heard, I am never catching up. I just don't understand how you can have so much contempt for your audience/fandom/shippers, whether it was the writers/showrunner or CW higher ups. It's also what makes me hopeful about RNM moving forward. I don't need the writers to be perfect, but aside from CAM, they don't seem to be interested in writing out of spite, and that's all I'm hoping for. The bar is low.

There is for sure a weird thing that happens when dudes think they're writing for other dudes, but then it turns out they're actually writing for women, and instead of being like, "WOW OKAY NEAT LOVE A BIG PASSIONATE AUDIENCE!" they get, like, very mad and Need To Punish.

That NEED TO PUNISH the audience for being invested, and god forbid SHIPPING SHIPS, is what makes so many shows endlessly unappealing. Whether you look at EKripke, JRothenberg, RThomas, SMoffat, or of course my very special friend JDavis... They all have this NEED TO PUNISH their audience and to DESTROY what people love. 

Because they seem to believe that makes them good writers or something. IDK. But it’s very clear that whenever a show gets bigger - which is often thanks to enthusiastic, and overwhelmingly female and queer fans - they start paying attention to the fandom (ewww, girls, or even worse, grown women, not to mention The Gays), and the second a popular non-canon ship emerges (which in many cases is also a queer ship), it’s basically doomed bc male showrunners don’t like it when the audience doesn’t take what they’re pushing for, and instead likes something they didn’t invent and intend. 

Then the punishing starts. Characters people love together will be kept apart and paired off with other characters, somewhere along the way shows might tease certain ships, they’ll happily queerbait if that’s an option, but ultimately the clock is ticking and you can be almost certain that beloved characters will end up with other characters people like less and/or be killed off.

I really hope that Chris Hollier’s ego isn’t that inflated (he doesn’t come across like that’s the case, he seems to be more of a team player, and the fact that he’s a romantic soul makes me hopeful that the show won’t be drenched in constant misery going forward), and he’ll consider fan investment a positive thing that should be cherished and nourished, not punished. 

That doesn’t mean that he should only ever give us what we want (LOL, if only :P), that’s not what this is about. But there’s a difference between looking at what gets fans invested and then give them a bit of that (as a treat), instead of destroying it and forcing something else on them.

The bar is so low, we have to dig it up from 6 feet under...

And typically, those showrunners who go out of their way to destroy the romantic narratives in their shows just to show they are edgy (TM) and don't care about Shippers are always those who are deeply insecure about being perceived as Serious Showrunners because their shows are genre (already a point off in the "how to be perceived as the serious TV writer" score) and/or perceived as teen-oriented (say, due to being a network such as CW or its precursor UPN), which is even worse.... and also, don't - or did not before the Hulu revival, in Veronica Mars' case - feature much graphic violence, swearing or nudity, aka Adult (TM) things, due to being on such networks.

So how is a dude to prove that he's an adult, edgy, gritty type of a showrunner when running shows like that - than by showing contempt for the 'embarrassing' parts of their audience and going out of their way to spite them?

But only after baiting and teasing them for an eternity - because they wanted their shows to be renewed year after year.

One day I hope the term “shipper” will fade from discussion. I know the term originated with my Mulder and Scully and was a way to highlight fans interested in their relationship becoming romantic, but it seems the name has become a pejorative term and a way to dismiss and segment fans. Besides the media and often male showrunners dismissing and showing disdain for fans for even having the audacity to be interested in any romantic elements on a show, there seems to be a belief that if you do ship characters than that is all you are interested in. There is no understanding that you can not only embrace the entire story but that it only enhances your interest in the overall narrative.
