What better way to end my birthday than to celebrate and stand up for my culture.
My culture is not your toy; the bindi is not for your fashion and your entertainment.
Happy @reclaimthebindi week everyone and I’m sorry for the late post!! As always, I loved seeing all the amazing posts from everyone this week

When I went back home to Guyana in December, my grandmother bought me this beautiful salwar kameez after listening to me talk of how I wanted to reclaim my culture and boldly exist as an Indian woman in spaces where I am not always welcome. This outfit was expensive and not within my granny’s budget and yet she got it for me because she supported my endeavours and insisted I have it as a gift to me from her and my grandpa. She never wore any clothes of our culture herself in her life as the Indian culture was diluted during the time she grew up when Guyana was still a British colony and under heavy British influence. So this part of our culture and heritage is something she never experienced and to have her support like this is all the more incredibly meaningful and special. One of the greatest lessons I have learnt from her is to remain steadfastly proud of where I come from. For this, I will be forever grateful to her. I stand on the shoulders of giants, the many strong Indian women that came before me.

I remember my mother telling me not to thread off my unibrow, because to have a unibrow was seen as a sign of wisdom. But being highly affected by the teasing and shaming of something so natural and out of my control, I still begged to get my eyebrows done and thin them out. And now it’s suddenly become desirable to have fuller and thicker, messier eyebrows. Thank god I started letting them grow out naturally. God bless our thick and hairy eyebrows and unibrows which we were teased for all through high school, and even now. Bless our side burns and moustache and our hairy arms, legs and stomachs. May we learn to love and unshame our naturally hairy bodies, and teach our girls the same. @reclaimthebindi

When I was younger, it was difficult being constantly judged for what I wore to school or the food I brought from home. But now it’s a fashion trend and it shouldn’t be that way. My culture is not an accessory.
I’m proud of who I am, and always will be.
(I don’t have any bindi’s at uni, so here’s a a cute selfie of me without one )
