feral moonstone varian au + sundrop hugo for funsies
what is feral moonstone varian? well basically i saw pinkwindowwithin’s art and ujmmmm i used it as an excuse to draw varian with paws. and then i couldn’t stop thinking about it. so now i have an entire au in my head
some explanation i made up is that the sundrop gives (life, beauty, etc) while the moonstone takes (destruction, death, etc) so the moonstone would take your humanity opposed to the sundrop that would give you long beautiful hair or something I DONT KNOW….💔💔🐺
also take this marcy wu and varian sketch i made cause they WOULD be besties
The Dark Kingdom has had their descendants for a long time, his cousin Horace was the one who was supposed to be the holder of the moonstone and he left him alone, just like his mother and father did in this cold and boring kingdom, he was forced to learn how to fight, how to manage to react appropriately to royal situations, but the worst one out all of them was the moonstone.
He never asked to be the only last descendent of the royal blood.
He never wanted to have anything to do with the moonstone!
But his "family" would never listen
"this is the best for you Varian"
"You shouldn't be greedy"
"Accept this destiny that has been sealed since you were born Varian"
"G i v e u p V a r i a n"
"...I never asked for this"
"you asked for it when you were born, now just walk, the moonstone waits for you"
I'm finally happy and satisfied (maybe) with how they look bc i was trying to upload them before with only some colors and... it didn't felt right, and also a part of me wanted to leave them without color but a part of me is a bitch that is messy and loves to paint stuff :3
I did some of this for studies basically, bc I found an artist called (gtsleep1200) and auuuoooouuughhhh they inspired me a lot.
So yeah, that and moonstone Varian or moon Varian or whatever!
Also! Zoé is such a good group that you should totally go and listen :3

OKAY SO this is a design I have for like a dark kingdom AU
So basically, in this universe, Edmund sends away nearly everyone in the dark kingdom, including his own son, the only ones who remain are the brotherhood who remain to protect the moonstone.
However, Quirin has a son, and he refuses to give the young Varian up. Although it was a risky protest on Quirin's part, King Edmund accepts this, and the decision to raise Varian as a sort of Prince of the dark kingdom is made.
Since Varian was born there had always been a blue stripe of hair on his head, likely due to the moon stone explosion that Quirin was exposed to before he was born. However, he had always had a strange connection to the moonstone, and the moonstone always had a connection to him. This was troublesome, but the brotherhood realized that Varian might be the key to ending the moonstone's destruction, which is why he is to become the moonstone's host.
Unfortunately, being such a young boy, it's sort of out of control, only growing worst on a sudden day when he's fourteen and feels a surge of power that draws him southward bound. This leads to a massive argument between the brotherhood, Adira thinks it's a good idea to follow these rocks, believing in the magical sundrop that is the counterpart to the moonstone, Hector is vehemently against this and thinks of her as crazy, he's determined to keep Varian, and the moonstone, in the dark kingdom. Quirin is more worried about his son than anything, and also agrees with Hector that it would be in Varian's best interest to keep him in the dark kingdom, and keep whatever had caused this surge out. King Edmund is also on Quirin's and Hector's side, leaving Adira alone 1 v 3... well... kind of.
Varian's opinion is of course not at all taken into consideration, he's just a kid afterall, and the adults know better... supposedly. That's why in the middle of the night, he decides to take charge of his own destiny and follow where the rocks take him. It's the first time he's taken a journey alone, and he has quite a lot to learn before he can reach Corona, and he also comes to learn about the magic sundrop's host, someone like him. He's not sure what will happen when the sundrop and moonstone meet, but he's determined to find out with the power of the moondrop, and his alchemical abilities.
There's more that I still need to develop but this is the general ideaaa
It's time to finally rip this armor to shreds...figuratively because it's indestructible XD
And big shoutout to @whosbex @archivedwoods @th3p0rtalmaker @the-reverse-mermaid @aziraphalesbookkeeper and @majorabbey who all wanted to see this. I thank you all so much for your patience 🥰
Don't get me wrong there are some elements of this that absolutely work. The blue and black is a wonderful color scheme, especially that blue swirl that goes down and around Cass's body. And the spikes on the shoulders, forearms, and calves looks super cool and gives off a more black rock feel and a very intimidating silhouette. But...that's about all it does right.
1- It doesn't fit Cassandra's sense of style at all
In all the outfits we can see Cass wear throughout the show, we can very easily get a sense of exactly what her style is. It’s very clear that she dresses conservatively. And especially in armor she values practicality above all else. Her clothing has to serve its respective purpose. And up until season 3 the only revealing thing she wears is her island outfit and even then that’s pretty modest. And the moonstone armor comes along and completely disregards her established sense of style.
2- It undermines the moonstone's capabilities
We get it very explicitly confirmed that the Moonstone made the Dark Kingdom, and made Cass's tower as well. We see the amount of detail it puts into buildings. Even the rocks, the most simple thing it can make, are magically complex enough to know to seek out the Sundrop. And you're telling me that this thing can't make better armor than that?? Nuh uh, no way. I don't buy it. There’s absolutely no reason for the moonstone to provide a skin tight catsuit with a few spikes when we know its power can be much more sturdy and intimidating.
3- It's Chris Sonneburg's fantasies showing through
Those of you who have been in this fandom know the crush that Chris, the director, has on Cass. She's supposedly based on his college crush or something, and from day one he always wanted Cass to be the villain and plan to betray Rapunzel even as far back as the very beginning of the show. And of course, don't you want to see your crush in something hot? Therefore, I'm certain that the retaining of the catsuit was his idea. Because if you look at the moonstone concept art you can see more and more the visual leaning into a catsuit rather than actual armor
4- It's not at all practical or historically accurate
For reference, THIS is what armor has typically looked like throughout history
And even in works of fantasy you still have some version or variant of armor like this. Throughout the middle ages you can see just how tanky armor used to be. But as you can see, the moonstone armor looks nothing like that. It doesn't at all look like it could realistically defend a person.
Granted Cass's guard uniform is also kinda form fitting like the moonstone armor, but there’s still protective elements of it. The helmet, the breastplate. You could still believe that that is practical armor. Despite it being indestructible, the moonstone….is not at all practical armor. It doesn't look like it belongs in history or even fantasy. It is so obviously modern it’s almost painful.
5- It makes her disappear.
This is actually something that @moltenhair pointed out a while back that I never realized. There's too much black in there. A lot of the time we see Moonssandra at night and because there's so much black on her armor it makes her fade into the background to the point where she looks like a floating head and hand because the blue is all that really catches your eye about the design. Granted one can make the argument that this could have been done on purpose because taking and using the moonstone isn't actually giving Cass the spotlight she thinks it is but...eh...it's a loose argument.
another older piece i thought i could share, this one being from march 22! a part of me wants to redraw this (or at least redraw rapunzel and eugene) but it took so long to do in the first place that i'm not sure i want to lol.
And goodness do I LOVE animating in OpenToonz!!!!!!
Full animatic will be up on my tiktok in however many days/weeks it takes to complete, but warning it will contain MAJOR spoilers for one of my fics :D
Fixed another old doodle (Rapunzel grabbed the moonstone and...blah blah). Anyway, I already made the background solid yellow in the old one and the sleeves of her dress were transparent, so when I tried to make a cutout of it (to remove the background, I had been working on the exported image), the yellow hue around her arms sticked and ruined the entire painting 😭. Then I tried to fix it by applying navy blue over it and it ruined it further 😭. Whatever, at least the perspective experiment with black rocks was successful 😁😁.
okay so i kinda have no idea what to do from here so im gonna post my first draft (mostly written at 3am) and you guys tell me if the plot is good and the plot holes I need to fix and also a name for the AU because i just found out people name their AUs and i can't just call mine "my tangled au" forever yk
please tell me if it's shit i need to know that to make it better (but also keep in mind that it's the first general idea)
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
a world where only eugene, rapunzel and her parents know about her powers and everyone else thinks her hair just turned brown as she aged and there was nothing special about her rapidly growing blonde hair as a baby. cassandra never takes her to the rocks and her hair never grows back and she lives her life normally, apart from having to adapt to a new world and dealing with trauma from being in the tower
moon is eugene's lost sister and her mom died birthing her. she absorved all of the moonstone's powers because her mom was around it so much and now the moonstone is almost harmless because moon carries almost all the power, that's why she has the ability to recite the spell
king edmund sent everyone away and stayed in the kingdom taking care of moon after finding out about her powers, scared that she would harm someone, but as she grew up, she questioned why she was stuck in an empty castle with her dad, why she couldn't explore the world, but the king only told her it was too dangerous (the only thing he didnt tell her was that it wasnt the world that was dangerous for her, it was the opposite) so one day when she was 15 she found a scroll in her father's bedroom and she saw that there was a drawing of the moonstone- the same stone that is in the center room of the castle that her father doesn't let her enter- and a lot of symbols that she couldn't decipher so she found a way to run out of the castle at night and find out the truth about that stone and why her father kept her there. after walking for days she finally found a village with people so she went up to the first person she saw for answers, and she showed a nice old woman the scroll and asked if she knew what it meant and she smiled and took her into her home. she figured what it said very quickly and asked moon to read the decay incantation, to which she only smiled as the little girl was possessed by moon magic, unable to stop reciting the spell. "you own the moonstone, don't you?" the old woman asked her, to which she responded explaining where she came from and that the moonstone is locked up, so she took the woman back to the kingdom after she manipulated moon into thinking she needed the moonstone, only to try to steal it at the last second. fortunately, king edmund saw the old woman (an old spirit and follower of zhan tiri) and stopped her forever. he then decided that moon wasn't even safe stuck in the dark kingdom and did a spell to wipe all of her memories and made the crows take her somewhere she could live a new and anonymous life, hopefully being saved by a kind family. the only thing he didn't know was that she sent the girl still with the demanitus scroll in her pocket to varian's house in old corona
varian also has some moonstone power but not enough to kill people like moon, in his maximum capacity he would only be able to put someone in a coma, but that would take a lot of his energy. his mom is a descendent of demanitus and she met quirin through studying the magic of the sundrop and moonstone, and they were around the moonstone a lot, but not as much as the queen, so that's why varian has magic but a lot less than moon
varian never believed that rapunzel was magically brought back with different hair and the person who kidnapped him just died. he knew that woman must've had a reason to kidnap the princess and keep her hidden for 18 years, why doesn't the rest of the kingdom know the reason? the queen drank tea from a magic healing flower that cured her deathly disease and rapunzel was born with long hair the same color as the flower, then she was kidnapped and came back with the opposite- short brown hair- and those facts have nothing to do with each other? so when that mysterious girl showed up at his doorstep with a scroll about that same flower, he knew it was a sign for him to investigate
“Varian.”
The boy pauses. The body slowly turns. In a slow, eerie movement, Varian tilts his head. He looks like a doll with an unblinking stare. It’s creepy as hell, but not as unsettling as what comes out of his mouth.
“Hello, Horace.”
Or: Every full moon, Varian becomes a little less of himself, and a little more of something else.
