Islamabad: The government prohibited all federal institutions from acquiring land for housing purposes on Tuesday, in addition to scrapping all quotas in government housing plans, except for those for its staff.

The decision was to proceed during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan. It asserted that, despite extraordinary inflation, Pakistan’s costs for vital products remained lower than those throughout South Asia, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and India.

The cabinet was informed that PM would announce a “massive relief package” in his Wednesday (today) address to the nation, which would benefit over 53% of Pakistan’s inflation-affected population.

“The cabinet has determined that no federal government institution will acquire land from residents in Islamabad in the future,” Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry stated during a press briefing following the cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, Asad Umar tweeted: “Today, the cabinet abolished a decades-old unjust system in which acquired land forcibly from Islamabad residents.” Imran Khan’s government can only make such a populist move.”

However, a senior govt official on condition of anonymity that the government had effectively phased out the Naya Pakistan Housing Program (NPHP) due to the authorities responsible for it, such as FGEHA and NPHA, would not be able to acquire land for providing affordable housing units to the poor.

He added that it would also be unjust for individuals who had already paid for their land through any land award (setting the government price for land). In contrast, others who had not collected it would receive market value for the land.

“Now there is a void: who will determine the market value of land — the seller or the purchaser,” he explained, adding that before this decision, the concerned deputy commissioners had declared the land’s award.

According to Fawad Chaudhry, the prime minister’s discretionary powers to allot plots have been revoked. “The prime minister has not yet exercised that discretionary authority,” he asserted.

The minister stated that the cabinet received a detailed briefing on commodity prices compared to other regional countries and was assured that Pakistan’s prices were the lowest in the region. “Pakistan’s fuel prices continue to be the lowest among non-oil producing countries,” he asserted.

According to the ministry, wheat flour costs Rs60.9 per kilogram in Pakistan, Rs83 in India and Bangladesh, and roughly Rs73 in Afghanistan.

Minister reviews annual development programme LAHORE:Provincial Finance Minister Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht chaired a meeting of the annual development programme 2021-22 at the Planning & Development (P&D) Board on Wednesday to review the progress. The minister directed the line departments to ensure maximum progress and utilisation of budget adding that laws would be amended, if required, to remove impediments to PPP-mode projects and the government would also extend necessary support to the partners. Chief Secretary Jawad Rafique, P&D Board Chairman Abdullah Sumbal, secretary finance Iftikhar Sahu and administrative secretaries attended the meeting. The meeting took stock of the issues relating to the utilisation of budget and completion of ongoing schemes. Planning & Development Board chairman briefed the participants that Rs337 billion were earmarked for development expenditures in the current financial year and the amount has increased to Rs346 billion after payment of pending dues by the federal government. He said that65 percent of the current ADP had been utilised. Giving the details, he said that Rs200 billion was allocated for ongoing schemes and out of this amount, Rs83 billion of the released Rs129 billion had been utilised. Similarly, Rs71 billion was earmarked for new schemes in the current budget. The government has utilised 68 percent of the released amount worth Rs39 billion, he added. The 67 percent of the released budget of various development programmes has also been utilised, he said. Abdullah Sumbal continued that the literacy and non-formal education department has utilised 87 percent budget, the urban development department used 86 percent while the planning and development department spent an 83 percent budget. Similarly, the labour and human resource used a 79 percent budget, the sports and youth affairs department spent 79 percent budget, the energy department used 74 percent and specialised healthcare spent a 73 percent budget in the current fiscal year. All other departments have used more than 56 percent of their budget, he added. CM LAUNCHES TOURISM FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH PROJECT

LAHORE, December 18:

Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar laid the foundation stone of roads infrastructure improvement plan of six tourist-spots under tourism for economic growth project at 90-SQA on Friday. The project has been launched in collaboration with the P&D Department and the World Bank.

Addressing the ceremony, the CM said roads infrastructure will be improved with a cost of Rs83 crore adding that revamping of the 35-kilometre long roads will be completed in the first phase. Tourism zone is being developed in the salt range consisting of Chakwal, Khushab and Mianwali and new tourist-spots are going to be introduced in Kotli Sattian, Chakwal, Jhelum, Soan Valley, Mianwali, Attock, Fort Munro and Koh-e-Suleman. Along with it, the CM said that steps will also be taken to promote tourism in Jhelum, Multan, Bahawalpur and other areas. More projects will also be started to further promote tourism because a large potential of historic, cultural and religious tourism is available in Punjab, he said. Meanwhile, the CM told that a program is underway to restore Lahore Fort and other historic spots with an amount of four billion rupees. Tourist- spots will also be developed under a public-private partnership, he disclosed.

The CM said a total of 176 rest houses have been opened to the general public through an online booking facility. The Punjab government has formulated tourism policy and a tourism authority has also been set up to promote tourism while software has been designed for online issuance and renewal of licenses of stakeholders. He announced to project Chakwal as a lake city as a number of natural lakes are available in this historic district. Similarly, resorts are being established at various rivers and lakes to provide recreational facilities to the visitors. Such a resort facility is under construction at Taunsa Barrage to offer water sports activities, he added. The CM stated that double-decker tourist bus service is started in Rawalpindi and the facility will be extended to Bahawalpur, DG Khan and Multan soon.

The CM maintained that a lot of tourism-related potentials is available and Punjab will be projected as the hub of tourism. The soft image of Pakistan can be projected worldwide through tourism and it will also attract investors, he added. The CM assured to provide ample funds for the projection of tourism adding that cultural activities will also be promoted alongside, he added.

Special Assistant to PM Syed Zulfiqar Bukhari, in his video link address to the ceremony, said that Pakistan has tremendous tourism-related opportunities and these facilities are being fully exploited. Tourism and economy go hand in hand and the national economy will be strengthened due to the promotion of tourism, he added. Country Director World Bank Mr Najy Benhassine, in his video link address, assured that the World Bank will continue its collaboration with the Punjab government for the promotion of tourism. Tourism Advisor Asif Mehmood assured that no stone will be left unturned to develop Punjab as a tourism-hub adding that practical steps have been taken in this regard. Chairman P&D Hamid Yaqoob apprised the participants about salient features of Punjab tourism for economic growth project. Secretary C&W briefed about the salient features of the project and CM also inspected stalls of the tourism and P&D departments.

In a statement, she said the total number of corona cases has reached to 130122 in Punjab while the number of patients in Lahore is 63601. As many as 3511 have died of corona in Punjab, she added.

The corona cases are increasing due to PDM meetings while the political turncoats are raising a hue and cry over the upcoming Senate election. Raising hue and cry is the fate of the opposition till 2023 and the PDM will not get anything except humiliation as it has been entrapped in the blind alley having no exit, she added.

The sources said that the sweetener is being sold at Rs88 in the wholesale market. As a result, sugar is available at high rates in the retail market. The commodity is being sold from Rs90-95 in the port city’s retail market, the sources said. Meanwhile, citizens, lashing out at the government, termed the surge as its “failure”. Hike by Rs5 two days ago Two days ago, sugar prices rose by Rs5 per kilogramme. The development came after Prime Minister Imran Khan praised his economic team for bringing down the price of sugar to Rs81 per kg a few days ago. The price of sugar per kg went up in all major cities of the country, including Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Multan, and Faisalabad. A 100kg sugar sack was sold for Rs8,300 in Karachi’s wholesale market. Thus, it was available at Rs83 per kg. Moreover, in the retail market, sugar was sold for Rs90 per kg. According to sources, sugar prices went up by Rs11 per kg within a month. In some areas of Karachi, the sweetener was being sold for Rs100 per kg. In Lahore, sugar was available for Rs85-90 per kg, while in Quetta, citizens were forced to buy sugar for Rs90 per kg. Provincial Information Minister Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan has said that under the tireless and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, the country is moving towards economic self-reliance and this fact is even acknowledged by international financial institutions. He while expressing his gratitude on the trust being reposed by Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief Minister Punjab on him said that now PTI government will steadfastly play on the pitch of opposition. He said that Maulana should only show contentment on taking desserts only. Al-Sharif has ruined themselves for indulging into misdeeds like cement, concrete road, money laundering and corruption, he added. Punjab government in its initial 15 months under the leadership of Sardar Usman Buzdar has done hundreds of such magnificent works which have been done for the first time in the history of the province and this success is not being digested by the media cell of All Pakistan Loot Mar Association. He expressed these views while talking with media representatives in a press conference held at DGPR Office. CM Sardar Usman Buzdar has decreased the expenditures of CM Secretariat besides 60 percent decrease in the salaries of officials. Sardar Usman Buzdar contrary to Shahbaz Sharif who was given the name of Punjab speed due to indulging into corruption and money laundering also ended the practice of having two hundred security personnel and also do not have eight camp offices. Sardar Usman Buzdar reduced his security expenditures from Rs83 crore to Rs28 crore and has given benefit of Rs55 crore to the national exchequer. While under the head of gifts and hospitality he has also decreased its budget from Rs11 crore to Rs3 crore only. For the first time hundred percent maintenance of law & order was seen under the leadership of Sardar Usman Buzdar. CM Punjab also retrieved more than nine lac acres land from land grabbers from so-called politicians named Daniyal Ch., Talal Ch. and Mian Latif. Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan while elaborating more facts said that according to report of finance ministry, Punjab government has earned profit amounting to Rs75 billion under the head of income and expenditures which speaks volume of its excellent performance and best administration. He further told that for the first time 35 percent development budget has been allocated for south Punjab which will help to change negative image from the minds of people about Takht-e-Lahore. Previous governments only restricted all resources to central and northern Punjab.
