Alex: We’re going to play Honey Heist, Honey Heist is a game--
Bryn: Didn’t Critical Role do that?
Ben: I was just going to say “You know, that one from that podcast that is much more popular than this one?”
Bryn: Much more successful?
Ben: With the voice actors?

Second day of Ace Week and second of my ace favs from fiction podcasts:
Zolf Smith - Rusty Quill Gaming
About textual representation we have Ben Meredith’s (actor playing Zolf) statement at the beginning of episode 176 saying Zolf is canonically biromantic gray-asexual and sadly that part when this was said during earlier episode was cut out by mistake. I love extremely that he cared so much about this that actually went and recorded it because he wanted all listeners to knew it. So even if we don’t have it said during episode it’s still cool as hell in my opinion.
Zolf as ace representation has a special place in my heart because of the fact that he is in queer platonic relationship with Wilde. They are one of the most amazing and deep relation in RQG. They are literally life partners. They have genuine respect towards each other. They understand each other. They are best friends. They care about each other so much. They went on Roman holiday together. They spent life together. Probably partially by accident Alex (playing Wilde) and Ben created such an amazing queer platonic relationship, it feels so true and genuine and deep. I want what they have, sir (without dying and everything but yeah pls).
And also I can’t forget the fact that Zolf enjoys reading bad romance novels and writing explicit fan fiction and that is one of the most true ace representation I have ever seen.
Happy Ace Week to all my fellow ace fanfic readers and writers!

Spoilers for RQG 218
Having listened to the episode a few times and sat with it, I wanted to write down some thoughts about the end of RQG.
I liked the ending and how it connected back to a lot of stuff throughout the story. But I’m not sure I liked the introduction of another super hive mind? I think I would have rather them found the Tree and had to figure out what was going on and chosen destroy or leave it be? I’m not a huge fan of trying to talk to a being that can’t give straight answers because it’s beyond mortal comprehension, etc. Very on Zolf’s side there.
I’m fine with magic being gone. Based on the way magic and the planes were described as functioning before, it makes total sense. I also am fine that the characters didn’t realize that would happen because even if they managed to get that from Myriad, would that have changed their choice? It seems like the Tree/Myriad was a force in the universe that connected things but was corrupted or evolved into something else? So hopefully it’ll reset and the planes will reconnect and magic will come back. It’s a matter of how long that takes.
The shift from the fight to Myriad’s place was also jarring. I think it works, but overall, I would have preferred them to just finish the fight and then Babbage could have shifted them to the Tree. They were doing pretty well all things considered. I guess Babbage got exploded and that’s what sent Zolf there? What was Alex having Wilde do to help? What was that?
We did get a lot of nice character interaction too: Cel talking to Myriad, Zolf refusing to talk to Myriad, and Hamid accepting that taking a chance on becoming a powerful being wasn’t a good idea, etc. I appreciate that. (Let’s be honest though, one of them taking Myriad’s place would have been super interesting even if the outcome was the same).
And now they get to build something new. Maybe with magic, maybe without. These are characters that are strong enough to be who they are without magic.
I can live without all of the answers (that’s how things shake out in an RPG), but I’d love to get some more lore through metacasts or Q&As. I’m also really looking forward to all of the epilogues! I hope they’re coming out starting next week and we don’t have to wait until Jan due to a holiday special, but there isn’t any information out about that yet :/
Anyway, end babbling. Reply with your thoughts if you like?

Do you listen to RQG at all? Cause I just caught up to the holiday special "Bite marks" game, and I got some serious "Blood Moon" vibes. Curious what you'd think of their interpretation of a similar setting.
I’ve never heard of RQG before, and I haven’t heard of ‘Bite Marks’ either... but at a glance it looks like an awesome game. Unfortunately, I’m trying to avoid werewolf books and media right now, because I don’t want to be influenced too much while I’m still finding my footing with Blood Moon. That said, I’m 110% going to wishlist Bite Marks on DriveThruRPG. It can be a gift I get myself when I finish Blood Moon. Thanks so much for the recommendation.

✨I never had a dream come true/ Till the day that I found you✨
A promise is a promise—gay ice skaters are here! I’m quite proud of how this came out, though I know I can do better. (To be fair, I’ve only had access to colored pencils and not my art tablet for a year now, but whatever.) Once I’m able to I’m gonna do a digital version of this!
Their appearances are also not 100% set in stone; I like how Randall came out (on the left), but Leonardo doesn’t match the Leo in my head, so don’t be surprised if he they change in future drawings (yes, there will be more!)
And here’s a bonus unfiltered photo, though the filters only make it look more like it does IRL:

And the reference is from Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s Moulin Rouge Performance, which I CANNOT recommend enough:

I know a lot of people want to get into RQG but find it intimidating/the opening boring or want to enjoy it’s content because they like RQ but aren’t big fans of TTRPGS so here’s a reminder that they also do 2-4 episode specials in addition to their main campaign! These are usually more funny than plot and pull in people from all parts of RQ so here’s a list of a few of my favourites if anyone wants to try them out (And if you like it, maybe listen to the main campaign?)
Honey Heist (December 2018) - Two episodes  The first special I listened to! It’s entirely comedy so no need to keep track of a plot. It features Helen Gould and Bryn Monroe, who you won’t know if you haven’t listened to RQG before, as well as Ben and Alex. They play the rules light Grant Howitt game Honey Heist in which you, a team of literal bears, attempt to infiltrate Honey Con 2018.
Fiasco Holiday Special 2017 - Two episodes
The first half made me cry laughing and the second half made me. Well. Just cry. Like the ending is incredibly sad please read the TWs but it’s so good? Features Alex, Ben, Lydia, Anil and Bryn playing a game of Fiasco and without spoiling too much it involves ice skating, a jouranlistic feud, attempting to win your ex back via ice skating, the HR manager from your nightmares, and excessive reference to “Yuri on Ice” because it was 2017 and it was gay ice skating special of course there was.
Monster of the Week - Three episodes + A setup
This one has some actual serious plot to it! Ben DMs a game of Monster of the Week (Like from TAZ:A) for Helen, Alex and Sasha Sienna. It’s also quite sad in the end but just generally really excellent. Helen and Sasha play girlfriends, though only one of them is aware of this because she’s a ghost and the other thinks she’s dead. Alex plays the non-binary child whos stolen car they’re riding around the 80′s English countryside in.
Space Pals - Two episodes
Alex, Helen, Lydia, Ben and Tim Meredith play Space Pals, a DMless, diceless improv set on a space ship. It has no real plot it’s really just incredibly funny chaos and it’s one to jump in to if you’re a Stellar Firma fan because Ben and Tim continue to be Like That
There’s also another two specials (Deadlands and Duskhollow PD) posted to the TMA feed which I assume people have listened to but are also delightful if you haven’t (Both features Jonny and Alex, I think the first one has Ben, Bryn and James Ross, and the second has Sasha, Frank Voss and Lowri Ann Davis)
This is by no means All The Specials it’s just my favourites and ones I think people just jumping in might enjoy!

For the fic ask meme: 1, 3, 7, 12, 14, 15, 21, 23, 25
:D def holy shit [rolls up sleeves]
1. favorite fic you wrote this year
has to be home is where the wolves howl (rqg werewolf au, teeth-rotting fluff). i probably started it in 2020, since it was inspired by the rqg werewolf holiday special last year, and i spent an incredible amount of time getting the tone/vibe just right (i was aiming for that close, almost overwhelmingly feeling of warmth when you get home from a good evening and everything is dark-bright and you're just happy. content.)
3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year
“Mesmerizing isn’t the right word. Captivating, entrancing, spellbinding--none of these capture how empty Hamid feels right now. Empty of everything but blood, and the sight of blood.” - from fallen, one of the hamsterdam week fics i wrote (which you beta’d!! 💚). i had a lot of fun with this fic overall, trying to make it feel really rhythmic.
7. longest completed fic you wrote this year
[nsfw] sufficiently advanced technology, a virtual reality zolf/cel piece that comes in at 3k. ... technically, the longest fic i’ve written this year is not published yet.
12. favorite character to write about this year
according to ao3, of the 42 fics i’ve published this year, 20 have hamid in them. he’s fun to mess with and dive deep on, what can i say? shoutout to trexel in never gonna give you up though, that was pretty fun.
14. a fic you didn’t expect to write
most of them, lbr! the [nsfw] grizzop/wilde/hamid stuff is especially not a ship i expected. nor did i think i would ever publish nsfw on my main account, but hey.
15. something you learned this year
that i can get tired of a ship.
21. most memorable comment/review
so many comments live in my brain. anything from Desilite. one that said someone thought of my fic as their comfort fic and that they reread it. the one from EMwoman25 where they asked to podfic my work (and did!!!).
also the two comments i’ve received that just say “Nice.”
23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t
i really wanted to write a phoenix!hamid au, part as a prompt fill for "erasing the line" the rqg finale event, and part as a thing that's been hanging out in my brain for a while. unfortunately it wants to be significantly longer and plottier than i could manage in the time that i had. 😔
25. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read
okay, if we don't include rereads... on yonder hill by bedlamsbard is a very good avengers infinity war/endgame au. for non-marvel persons (understandable), a harmony in grey by desilite (hi coign ♥) is such a good rqg poly fic. the worldbuilding is entrancing on its own, and then just. fantastic poly dynamics.
fanfic end of year asks!
