May Update from London Football Journeys

It has been an eventful month. Britain is facing a snap general election, Chelsea have won the Premier League title and France have elected a new President whilst dismissing the values and policies of the far-right National Front in the process.

Meanwhile, LFJ has completed video making workshops with Ansar Youth Project and West Hendon Youth Centre and you will be able to watch their efforts in our next newsletter. We have also started work on a new feature video for our website. We are working with a highly skilled producer called David Finch, and you can see some of his work on Vimeo.

And most exciting of all, the two previously mentioned youth centres have taken part in some very successful football exchanges where they travelled to an unfamiliar area, met new people and learnt leadership, teamwork and communication through football.

The Royal Parks Half Marathon is back in 2017 and we have just two places available for supporters of London Football Journeys.

It is 13.1 mile route through the four Royal Gardens of Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St James Park and Green Park as you pass by Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade and the Royal Albert Hall.

                            Date: Sunday 8th October                             Number of Places: 2                             Entry Fee: Paid for.                             Minimum Fundraising Target: £300                             Ideal Fundraising Target: £1000

This vital bit of fundraising will help support young people in our upcoming schools programme making London accessible to all and boosting their confidence and learning.

We were back at Wembley to host our Ambassadors as they started to discuss ideas for an upcoming project, as well as contribute to our new film.

We have had two of our six masterclasses where upon completion, 12 of our Ambassadors will achieve their Open College Network Level 2 Award in Progression - Young Ambassador and become founding members of the LFJ Youth Council. All thanks to Peabody.

Tomorrow’s the day! Not only is it race day, but it’s my birthday! I’m raising money for @switchboardlgbt. #royalparkshalf To donate: http://bit.ly/2fvIz9e Switchboard have been working to support and lend an ear to vulnerable LGBT+ young people since before I was born. Young people that may not have anyone else to turn to in their lives due to homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, bullying and cyberbullying, and any other issues that occur in their lives. For those of you that don’t know (and where have you been?) I recently completed my doctoral thesis on cyberbullying and the reasons why young people might engage in such behaviours and how educators in this age are NOT always able or willing to understand these behaviours and actions or have the desire to get involved. This makes charities like Switchboard all the more important for young people who need someone in their corner, especially if they feel they are all alone. I feel very strongly about this, and if I could volunteer with them, I would be doing so in an instant. This is why in the last fundraiser we had, I put my money where my mouth is, and matched the final donation total. In the end, I’m trying to raise awareness and money to allow them to continue to do the important work they are engaged in. (at London, United Kingdom)
