Hansweek 2019 day one - Throwaway prince

This is a short introduction to an AU set in Frozen 2 I started imagining in june, so a bit late for a full fledged piece. It’s mostly a character study I suppose but it was fun to write!

It’s set in an AU where everything @royalhans said is happening (about elementals and Hans being linked to air, but we don’t see that in this piece)

Hans gave the door a hard look, as if it had offended him. Cold air was drifting through the cracks in the wood. The days were getting shorter, and consequently, the weather was especially hard to bear in the morning. Hans still left his small cabin, the need for food and water overpowering whatever second thoughts he might have had.

His life was getting frighteningly predictable, in the little punishment his brothers had imagined for him. First lowly jobs on the castle’s grounds, then exile, but not too far so that they could pay him a visit once in a while. Hans scoffed. He did not know whether to be relieved or scared when one of them showed up. It was always for different reasons. Some were just there to remind him how much of a criminal he was, others gave him food and drinks he did not have on his land, and well. There was the inconvenience of having siblings that despised him.

Hans gathered some tools, intent on gathering goods before preparing himself a good breakfast. Usually he could not eat hearty meals, but since one of the nicer brothers had come the day before, he had a bit more choice. This was of course, a relief, considering fall was advancing and he was starting to reap the last of his good harvest. Soon, he would have to live on food that mostly grew under the earth, and that was not something he was looking forward to.

He would be getting a bit more time to himself, he realized, when his harvest had brought a richer load than what he had imagined. Well, it was still mostly peas and potatoes, and apples from his small orchard – not technically his – but it was something. This could mean a few “free” days wandering in the forest instead of working hard to maintain his small land. Because he was making something for himself, whether his brothers liked it or not.

He decided to take a road he was rather familiar with to calm himself. Getting angry this early in the morning was counterproductive, no matter how sweet the feeling was sometimes. The trees were starting to lose their leaves, the path under his feet the color of fire, his steps loud in the forest. He inhaled deeply, searching for his train of thoughts once again.

The first born, Alexander had not been tender with his words when he had thrown him on this remote Island – still under his control, mind you, Hans could never be free. According to him, Hans was not going to survive in the “wilderness” for long, and maybe that was the reason why he had chosen this as a long-time sentence for his baby brother.

Hans had had troubles getting used to this life, but two years later he was still there. Chopping wood. Growing food. Fishing. Occasionally hunting. Alternating between being too cold and too warm on some days. He was better at this than he had ever thought.

As a prince, he was never good enough. Being born the thirteenth, there had always been someone who had already achieved what he’d done, and better even. Christian was the erudite, Tomas good with people, the triplets were just that entertaining, and even the worst of his brothers had qualities he barely had the time to grasp. Good strategists, advisors, leaders even.

The way the people in that kingdom up north had treated him… His lips twisted in a grimace. They would not have reacted like that if they had known even one other Westergaard. The only reason why they had appreciated him so much was because of the complete incompetence of the other people in charge, royals and ambassadors all the same.

He slowed down, his fists clenched at his sides.

At the end of the day, he had failed. His brothers, Peter and Jens mostly, had made sure he knew that. What he had done would have been accepted if only he had succeeded, and the thought of it was making him sick. Being so close to victory, yet tasting the bitter remains of what could have been his. Nothing could replace the thrill he had felt when he had known the throne was just a few steps away. Steps that had involved murder, but he wasn’t that picky anymore. Back then at least.

Now, he thought, as nature was slowly coming alive, a bit muted at that time of the year, he was living the simplest life he ever had, and he could definitely complain. But he was alive, and Karl, the second born, had insisted on the fact that it was in itself a gift he had not the privilege to waste.

The brothers who liked him – or tolerated him rather, had tried to counterbalance those covered threats. They were happy to see him again. They wanted to make up for lost time. It all felt fake and forced, and Hans could not bear that kind of interaction anymore than he could withstand the obvious hatred the others had for him. He could not remember the last time he had truly felt loved. Him, not a persona he had tailored to an audience or a past self that just was not here anymore. It was, however, entirely his fault.

His feet were leading him towards a more secluded path, one he still knew but rarely treaded. The air was mildly colder, bringing back more memories he would have rather forgotten.

Had it been another time, another him, he could have had a blissful life with the beautiful little idiot that was the crown princess. She had been lovely and naïve, sweet and gullible, an absolute treat. In the Southern Isles, people like that did not survive. Or, if they did, they did not stay the same.

Hans suddenly realized it was too quiet. He couldn’t hear anything anymore. The beginning day could not seem to reach him.

He had lost himself.

The road was supposed to be familiar. The trees all looked the same, which was not reassuring. Hans knew those woods. But a strange fog was rising with the sun, one Hans had never seen before. It was thick, charged with something he could not define. It was calling him. He took a step, then another, straying further from what was known.

Thank you for being a light for this Hans fan and I'm sure others appreciate your thoughts as well. Thank you. You'll be the light that will keep me up until Disney redeems Hans as they should. I love you!

Yesterday I felt I needed a light to keep me up, to keep me optimistic, to keep me going. Truth is there were a couple of people’s posts that gave me strength while I didn’t want those who chat with me to stick around while I was being negative and pessimistic. I apologize to @totallyfrandom and @jonathanharker for being so down, thank you both for wanting to cheer me up. Thank you for being there, give me company and wanting to help, let’s call it that. I was having a really bad day.

It was @royalhans and @elsa-of-aren-hell ’s posts about how there’s still chance, be it slim or not, of Hans being in the sequel that changed my negative outlook and pretty much gave me strength to keep hoping again. Thank you both, you gave me hope again, and that’s no small thing.

And thank you anon for these words. Thank you all.
