BOTD: Royal Flycatcher
Tumblr media
Photo: Juan Bou Riquer
"Uncommon, medium-sized, overall warm brown flycatcher of humid tropical forest in lowlands. Note the hammerhead crest—very rarely fully raised to reveal spectacular, flame-red fan with violet-blue-black tips. Usually found as singles or pairs in mid-levels of dense forest, where flutters actively after insects. Nest is a straggly mass of dead vegetation up to 3 feet long that hangs from the tip of a branch, often along streambeds. Often detected by single squeaky calls; rarely-heard song variable across range. Occurs from Mexico to Brazil."

Note
what are your favourite ridiculous crested birds? (cockatoos, secretary birds, etc. anything with a feather crest)
There's A LOT of amazing crested birds out there. It's a hard choice but Royal Flycatchers are definitely up there.

Runner up would be a Crested Partridge. I worked with this species, very biased. Very round.

I love New Zealand representation! Though one sad thing is it wouldn't really be safe for Liam's girlfriend to be a kiwi bird shifter because they are a severely endangered species and heavily protected by the government! If not the kiwi though, I wonder what else she could be!
aww that’s actually really sad :(
i hear that new zealand have plenty of operations going on right now to help conserve/increase kiwi populations so they don’t go extinct, so that’s good.

on the topic of liam, i mentioned the sugar glider, but aside from that option, i’m also leaning towards birds with like those feather headdresses, like the royal flycatcher bird because hey, we all know liam’s signature haircut, and wouldn’t it be funny if his gf’s shapeshifter gf had a similar signature detail? she’d prob get along well with alex’s cockatiel while annoying the hell out of max’s ragdoll cat and yuki’s bunny rabbit.
