Imagine the boys hanging around today and asking Nightmare where Cross is since they haven't seen him. Nightmare tells them Cross asked to be taken to a surface au today, that this was a holiday in his home au when they got to the surface and it seemed like he wanted to observe it in peace so Nightmare left him to it. Monster Hunter AU // Rider Masks

A look at the masks of the Rider tribes of the Monster Hunter universe in light of the approach of Wilds' release and working on the Monster Hunter AU with @artistically-hershie! The Tobi-Kadachi (first image) is Alfred's, the Royal Ludroth (second image, bottom right) is Matt! Text under the cut.

"The masks of the Riders take on many forms and many meanings, all varying by tribe. To the Ludroth Tribe of the Primal Island, they are in some aspects transformative. When you wear your mask, you take on the form of your Monstie; this way you may borrow their strength, their gentleness, or even their voice. All is part and parcel of the Rider-Monstie bond of Kinship. Many a Rider even incorporates their Kinship Stone into their mask. If a Rider has more than one Monstie, it is tradition to make a unique mask for each Monstie. A Rider may spend years making their mask, which will be kept for life and ritually burned at death.

Apart from allowing a Rider to feel closer to their Monstie, the masks serve many purposes. Masks may be utilized in dances or the sharing of histories; they may be a status symbol within their tribe or when traveling to others; and they serve as armor or camouflage when mounted. Often they are attached to a cloak that the Rider will use in tandem, most of which are long and may cover a significant length of the body*. When outside their villages hunting or on business, the mask may also serve to make the Rider-Monstie pair look larger and more intimidating to potential threats. A beast with two heads is more fearsome than one. When the head is shaken, the mask and cowl make a racket that may aid in combat or may be used performatively. These articles are considered precious and are well kept. Ritual burning is said to help release the spirit of both Rider and Monstie at their passing.

*Rider masks can vary greatly in size, form, color, purpose, and all else. It is dependent on the individual pair, the tribe they come from, or the necessity of the mask itself.
