Giving an egg to same sex penguin couples in zoos who have displayed nesting behavior has apparently become a definite thing; while most species of penguins lay two eggs at a time, it's not uncommon for one egg to roll -- or be deliberately shoved -- out of the nest and be crushed. If a female repeatedly fails to hatch both her eggs, and there's a same sex childless couple on hand who have been seeing "incubating" rocks or dummy eggs, then it gives both those eggs a better chance of survival by fostering one out. A children's book was written about a pair of male penguins at the Central Park Zoo who successfully raised a chick one breeding season. (It was also turned into a play and became one of the most challenged books for years by parents wanting it banned from the library.)

Went to a zoo where there's a gay penguin couple but the problem is they're the only penguin couple at this point that the zoo has who are healthy enough to safely raise an egg so they keep being given eggs to raise and I'm just losing it over the mental image imagine being this old gay couple who just wants to live in peace but you keep having babies handed to you because all of your friends have too many issues to look after them
