i love it how when you see a fan stuff on tumblr before you read/watch the original piece and you never know if that's what really happened or what *should* have happened. like were they really in gay romantic relationship or were they just very close friends with a hint of homoeroticism

this came to me in a vision
[Image Description: The “Pornography? On MY computer? It’s more likely than you think” except the image is of Joseph Kavinsky. The text reads, “100 white mitsubishis that may become important and prevalent symbols for Ronan and my character arc and relationship? In MY abandoned lot? It’s more likely than you think. Free vibe check!” End ID]

retrograde - chapter 5
134 Tanglewood Way.
A dreamy McMansion at the end of a cul-de-sac.
The kind of neighborhood that looks idyllic on the outside. Big houses. Fancy cars in their neat little driveways. Perfectly manicured lawns and curtains clasped closed on every window. No one would expect depravity to go on behind such mahogany doors.
However, depravity came to the neighborhood and to one house in particular.
Kavinsky swore to himself he wouldn’t check the video out. He didn’t care what happened to his mother because she wasn’t his family. She may have given birth to him instead of washing him away with Percocets and vodka but she was absolutely not his family.
Curiosity, however, is a dangerous beast.
This is how Kavinsky finds himself in his mother’s old part of town, car parked in his mother’s driveway, staring up at a house he called prison and not a home.
read from the beginning?

Once, I was asked to draw Ronan/Kavinsky, but I rebelled and drew Pynch instead.
Today, I obliged.

>RESULTS PART 2
FANFICTION
Pynch has 1.6x more total fics than all of the other main ships combined. (The other main ships are Rodansey, Sarchengsey, Adansey, Ronsey, Rovinsky, Bluesey, and Jordeclan). There is probably a considerable overlap where more than one ship is listed in a fic. When calculating by the filter OTP:true, Pynch actually far outweighs the other main ships with almost 4x as many fics.
(The above stats were pulled from Ao3 on Saturday, September 18, 2021.)
Per the survey results, other than a clear preference for Pynch and and clear avoidance for Rovinsky, most fans consumed content for most ships at one point or another. A small percentage (unfortunately not clear from the graph) preferred only canon ships and purposefully avoid non-canon ships.
The numbers represented in the graph below reflect respondents with documented preferences. An option for "no specific character/ship preferred" was provided and, after Pynch, was the most selected option.
The following tables show the most popular trope for each ship (left) and a comparison of top tropes preferred by consumers and most commonly used tags on Ao3 (right).
(These numbers were pulled from Ao3 on Monday, September 20, 2021.)
The numbers for content creators are lower and far more disparate due to 1) the number of content creators in fandom (see chart) and 2) the way the questions were posed. Content creators could only choose one ship as opposed to a variety like the content consumer.
1 out of 3 fans are content creators, primarily making fanart and/or fanfiction. For the purposes of the survey, 135 respondents identified as content creators.
While Pynch is certainly preferred among creators, only a small percentage outright avoided making content for any other ship. Even still, there is a strong preference for Pynch as all other ships were more likely to be avoided than not when given the choice.
Similar to thr above, the numbers represented in the graph reflect respondents with documented preferences. An option for "no specific character/ship preferred" was provided and was the most selected option after Pynch.
This section in particular was difficult in general to try to graph information meaningfully, as Pynch continually had far more data than many of the other ships (even when combined). There's certainly enough data in the Pynch section of Ao3 to track some trends. I have not done this here for time and space and image limit restrictions but another post may be forthcoming depending on my mood.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
While making this survey, I had only intended on providing a brief snapshot of the shape of the TRC/TDT Fandom. I have been successful to this end.
However, in compiling the data and because the Dreamer Trilogy is ongoing, I found myself wondering about the trends in fandom versus canon leanings. It is generally accepted that fandoms have different priorities than the author. I think it would be interesting to conduct research into this by multiple means including a series of surveys across different fandoms, data aggregation of varying author's social media presence, and other means of gathering data. The ultimate goal of this research would be to illuminate the priorities of fandom versus author in the age of parasocial relationships and how that might shape both creativity and ultimately the market.
This survey is not equipped for the scope that that research proposes but nonetheless for it's purposes here it has proven at the very least entertaining.
Thank you so much for reading and a great big thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who responded!
I hope you all had as much fun as I did :)
---
Footnotes:
*Due to a mixture of factors, not all fans who participated in the TRC era necessarily participate in the TDT era. Similarly, not all TDT era fans necessarily participated in the TRC era. It is difficult to ascertain who exactly participated in which eras as no specific question on the survey measures this with any certainty. The nearest as can be deduced from the survey results is that only 34 of the 423 respondents could have been involved in both the TRC and TDT eras with certainty. This speaks nothing to whether or not these respondents are/were active in fandom in either era. Furthermore, it is entirely possible, and in fact probable, that far more respondents were involved in both eras but it is a failing on the survey to account for this.
(As of posting, alt text and image descriptions for graphics have not been added to part 2 of the results. I will update when that is added.)
(Please be advised, unless noted otherwise, all graphics have descriptions in the alt text to allow better accessibility for those using screen readers.)
Hi, everybody! I’m using proper capitalization and grammar! This is how you know I’m being serious!
>ABOUT ME
You can call me KK if you’d like. I read the books and joined the fandom the summer before Call Down The Hawk was released and I’ve been having a ball on this bitch ever since. I’m a content creator on technicality in that I write fanfic sometimes and make graphics sometimes but mostly I just think a lot about minor characters. I have a thing for graphs and charts and making judgements based on flimsy correlation.
>ABOUT the SURVEY
The survey was created using Google Form and ran from September 7 to September 14 on Tumblr, garnering a total of 423 responses. Promulgation was primarily through reblogs during this time period. Given the time limit and shape of responses, it is not likely that the survey reached other platforms and thus all results are assumed to reflect the self-proclaimed TRC/TDT Fandom* on Tumblr as of September 2021.
The TRC/TDT Fandom is generally understood to be comprised of two eras: the original TRC era which ran from ~2011 - 2016 and the current TDT era from ~2019 - present. At the time of the survey, only the first two books in the Dreamer Trilogy have been released.
Due to tumblr’s image limit, the results will be shared in two parts. Part 1 (herein enclosed) includes basic fandom preferences. Part 2, which will be shared as a reblog of this post, covers fanfiction and closing thoughts.
