River chub, one of the most common species of fish in North America. Some use them as bait for pike others smoke them. They are a fun ultralight rough fish. This one was caught on an orange Mepps 0 Aglia french spinner. It was promptly released. #urbanfishing #yearroundfishing #roughfishing #chub #fish #fishing #outdoors #catchandrelease https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Ic9CoJnV6/?igshid=1a8mc0nx1ygn9

There are a lot of species I’m proud of catching, but the Bigmouth Buffalo is fairly high on that list. Native filter feeders like these are natural competitors to the invasive Asian Carp species. So if you are ever lucky enough to catch one of these awesome fish, please release it back to its home to keep filling that niche in the ecosystem

The Shorthead Redhorse (Moxostoma macrolepidotum) is one of my most favorite "roughfish." Along with the Blue Sucker (Cycleptus elongatus), they are some of the most handsome sucker species in North America. A popular species to spear during their spawning runs into lakes, redhorse are also very sporting fish on the fly and can be nymphed for in the same manner as trout. While many people believe that suckers are dirty species that live in equally dirty water, this could not be further from the truth. Suckers might be more tolerant of warmer water than trout, but they are just as dependent as trout on clean water free of pollutants. #redhorse #roughfish #nativespecies

If you are going to be foolish enough to try to set the hook straight up on a gar, you need to at least use sharp hooks. If you want a higher chance at landing a gar set the hook sideways so that the hook will catch the softer area between the teeth on the lower jaw. But if you are pier fishing like I was that really wasn’t an option so I crossed my fingers and got lucky

My prized catch on a rainy day: a Bowfin on the fly! I worked so hard for this fish because the water had become so muddy. But after a few hours I finally got one to bite

I was starting to think I wasn’t going to catch a Bowfin at this spot, I let my baits sit for about a hour with no bites. Then within 15 minutes I landed these two beauties. It still makes me sad that so many people kill these native fish thinking they are trash fish, not only do they put up an incredibly hard fight they also serve an important role in the ecosystem. To quote Solomon David (a man who has studied these fish more than almost any other scientist),
“...like other well-known predators (such as pike and muskellunge) will eat whatever prey is most abundant, including crustaceans (crayfish, freshwater shrimp), forage fish (shad, minnows), or game fish.
In doing so, bowfin can help prevent the overpopulation of forage fishes and stunting in game fishes such as sunfish and bass, therefore maintaining a balanced ecosystem.”
So in a nutshell: If you aren’t going to eat it, don’t kill a Bowfin

Greater redhorse, Moxostoma valenciennesi. There were plenty of guesses on the species of this fish in my previous post but I received only one correct response. That's not surprising since roughfish don't get a lot of facetime on social media. Suckers, and in this case redhorse, typically get lumped together under one generic catch-all identification. Many of these species can be difficult to catch, especially while fly fishing, which leads to infrequent exposure by anglers. The greater redhorse is the largest of the redhorses, and serves as an indicator species of healthy rivers and clean water. They typically hold in the fastest and deepest pockets in the river, making them a challenge to catch. Fishing for them with a fly is nearly impossible. An angler needs to manage a perfect drag-free drift through these reaches while still keeping the fly within the feeding zone, i.e. the bottom, yet not putting so much weight on your fly that it can still cast and fish like a true fly and not a lure. The greater redhorse is truly a trophy fish and a once in a lifetime catch for many. I've been blessed to catch four of these treasures with a fly so far. #flyfishing #roughfish #redhorse #greaterredhorse #suckers #minnesota
