How to Clean Gutters Without a Ladder

Many people avoid cleaning their gutters because of the thought of going all the way up to them on a dangerous ladder. One of the problems with the ladder method is finding a place to lean the ladder itself. Often, gutters can't handle the weight of both the implement and the person, so if they're too high for an A-frame ladder, figuring out how to stay up there is a project in itself.

The other problem with the ladder method is trying to hang onto the ladder as well as the tools needed to clean the gutters. It's very easy to drop a tool or slip off of the ladder, causing injury or damage to equipment. Because of these issues, it makes sense to try to find a way to clean the gutters without going up to them – and preferably, to do the job while standing firmly on the ground. Here are some answers to how to clean gutters without ladder:

Blast the Debris Out

Pressure washers and power sprayers are popular tools for all sorts of exterior cleaning, and the gutters are common targets of their power. There is even a less-expensive version that fits on the end of a hose instead of using a pressure machine. This tool is special because it has a bend at the end that makes it easy to blast water down into the gutter instead of at it from the side. It also concentrates the power of the hose water for good cleaning effect. This type of tool is a favorite for cleaning gutters from the ground.

Special Vacuum Accessories

These allow you to turn a wet/dry vac into a gutter cleaner. The special shape of these accessories lets you reach inside the gutter from a long distance. Note that you'll likely need a vacuum hose extension, as well. This method can get a decent amount of debris, but it cannot handle debris that is too big, or leaves that are too wet and packed-down to be sucked up.

Because of the limitations of the suction of a typical wet/dry or other home vacuum, many people who use this method find that they have to do it very frequently. This prevents debris from building up to the point that the machine can't suck it down the long extension hose.

Extension Tongs

Many things that can't be vacuumed out can be scooped up with special tongs. These basic gutter cleaning tools are operated by a rope attached to a pole, so you can open and close them while you're on the ground. The downside is that you won't be able to see what you're doing, so you may miss an especially-compacted batch of leaves.

Rotary Gutter Cleaning Machine

This type of machine not only allows for pressure washing, but also remote scrubbing. Just attach the hose to wash, or add a cordless drill for rotary scrubbing. A remote camera lets you see what you're doing, so you won't miss anything.

Gutter Cleaning Applicator

Unlike the other tools so far, this is meant for the outsides of your gutters. It uses a special, shaped applicator to allow you to scrub them down to remove mold, mildew, stains, and other visible grime. All you need to do to make it the right length is attach it to a pole of a suitable length. These poles are often called "painter's poles."

Attachments for a Leaf Blower

If vacuuming out your gutters isn't for you, how about blowing the debris away? With the right attachments, you can turn your leaf blower or wet/dry vac's blowing function into a gutter cleaner. Just extend the business end to the gutter, and blow the junk out. The main caveat with this option is that the debris will have to be dry and uncompacted enough for the machine's wind to pick it up and lift it out.

Difficulties You May Encounter

Since you'll be standing on the ground, all of the debris that is removed will be falling down towards your face or head. When water is involved, you'll be getting a shower, as well. Because of this, you'll need to wear safety glasses at the very least. If you want to stay dry and keep your clothes clean, too, add a rain poncho.

Another common issue is finding that the debris in the gutters doesn't want to come out. This mostly happens when that debris is wet, and your chosen method doesn't deliver enough power to move the sticky masses.
