Ranch!! Re: your marine parasitology post, do you have a favorite species of rhizocephalan, or one you think is particularly interesting? Those crab parasites are BUCKWILD
Oh man, marine parasites are trickier (my course focuses on freshwater and brackish water on account of Finland) ^^’ Hmmm. Rhizocephalans, rhizocephalans…. I couldn’t find the species that do this, but I read that some rhizocephalans parasitise other types of barnacles! That’s hilarious as shit. Barnacle on barnacle violence. Your biggest nemesis is your relative who evolved to be the animal equivalent of a plant with roots and all.

Welcome one and all to the ✨Animal Showdown✨
This blog is singlehandedly inspired by the amazing work happening at @battle-of-the-taxons!! Go give that crazy competition some love!!
Now, those of you who have been closely following the Battle of the Taxons will know that the mighty Kingdom Animalia was narrowly defeated in the final Kingdom round. WELL! Through this blog, the animals have been given the spotlight!
As your dedicated host and taxonomy enthusiast @rosybetta, I would like to invite you to vote for your favorite animal! This bracket will be run very similarly to the Battle of the Taxons: We will start with voting for a Phylum, then Class, Order, Family, Genus, and finally Species. Buckle up, 'cause it's going to be a long journey!
For updates, you can check back on this post, which will be regularly edited as the bracket progresses.
Let the games begin!
Showdown Status: Phylum Round 1 is over! Preparing material for Round 1.5, stay tuned!

Some disclaimers for the Phylum rounds below the Keep Reading!
Animals come in all shapes and lifestyles, and that includes many, many, many parasitic species. I'll do my best to use images that are as family friendly as possible, but if you are sensitive to pictures of parasites, please use discretion. I'll do my best to just use microscope images of the animal itself when possible, and I will never show pictures of blood, gore, or other visible bodily harm.
I will be tagging posts with "cw insects", "cw spiders", and "cw parasites" as relevant. All phyla will also be tagged with their names, for example "platyhelminthes". Please send an ask/message if there is any other content you would like me to tag!
Lastly, please remember that I am just one person! I am a full-time marine sciences PhD student who struggles with mental health issues! This bracket may experience delays, but it's a project I'm really passionate about - please be patient with me!

Congratulations to the Phylum Round 1 winners!
The lucky phyla that will be moving on to the next round will be: Arthropoda, Placozoa, Onychophora, Loricifera, Annelida, Cycliophora, Cnidaria, Chaetognatha, Mollusca, Nematomorpha, Ctenophora, Tardigrada, Echinodermata, Rotifera, Chordata, and Xenacoelomorpha.
*** As a reminder, before Round 2 begins, Xenacoelomorpha will be going up against Micrognathozoa first. ***
Here are some fun facts about Round 1!
The top 3 closest matches were Xenacoelomorpha vs. Hemichordata (1%), Nematomorpha vs. Orthonectida (5.2%), and Onychophora vs. Platyhelminthes (14%).
The top 3 matches with the widest margin were Dicyemida vs. Chaetognatha (80.8%), Acanthocephala vs. Tardigrada (76.8%), and Cnidaria vs. Phoronida (74.4%).
The most-cheered-for phylum was Platyhelminthes, with roughly 46 positive comments. This is followed by Mollusca with ~30 positive comments.
The least-cheered-for phyla were Kinorhyncha, Acanthocephala, and Loricifera, with roughly 1 positive comment each. (Note that I may have misunderstood some people's responses, and I didn't count responses that were not actively positive. My count is subjective!) Don't worry, they'll be okay! In my scientific opinion, these little guys know they are very loved. <3
Highlight reel and summary of Round 1 below the Keep Reading!
This bracket includes a lot of phyla that many people were not aware of beforehand! There was a lot of marveling over these unfamiliar animals, summed up very well by @transcyberism and @space-candy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arthropoda was, predictably, a pretty popular phylum, so folks (@moonchopsticks, @rotationalsymmetry) had some sympathy for its opponent, Brachiopoda:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was quite the outcry when folks realized that Echinodermata and Porifera had been pitted against one another! Much ruckus was raised over unintentionally pitting two bad bitches against each other. The scandal can be summed up neatly by @dumbratinjade, @ploridafanthers, and @capripian:
Tumblr media
As Chordata surged forward in the polls, many folks (@luncheon-aspic) had suspicions about the reason behind its success:
Tumblr media
Some of the more niche phyla got some love! A small selection... Proof of the absurdity of the animal kingdom (@qsatisfaction):

Our ace champions (@oracle-moment):

Star Wars ass creatures (@jupesontherun):
Tumblr media
The most relatable sentence to me, rosybetta, known intertidal mud flat enjoyer (@ploridafanthers):

Overall this round was a huge success! To everyone who sent in propaganda, thank you! All of us learned so much!

my TRAITOROUS boyfriend has declared he hates scallops more than anything else in the world. I think they're beautiful little models with their soulful blue eyes and sweet smile.... do you happen to know any scallop facts that might redeem them to my boyfriend? no rush, of course! 🐚🦪💕
scallops are one of the few marine organisms that it’s actually great for both the environment and other species to farm in large numbers! scallops are filter feeders and naturally improve the water quality where they’re farmed, and the farms provide a haven for a multitude of fish and other organisms! SCALLOPS ARE GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, EAT AS MANY AS YOU LIKE WITHOUT GUILT
Tumblr media
(the use of farmed scallop shells as decoration is also GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT because it takes pressure off of wild species who might otherwise be collected to decorate tables at a beachside diner!)
