I agree that Marvel hasn't always chosen "good" actors, but I have the feeling that for some time now, things have been going the other way? just with the rumored actors for FF, they seem to want to move towards actors who physically fit maybe a little less but who are better from a technical point of view. this is why I have a hard time imagining them choosing a Ross Lynch or a Rudy Pankow to play opposite Pedro, Vanessa and Ebon if this casting is confirmed (nothing against them but their fans think they are perfect for the role because they are blond... that's all) it makes sense in my opinion that they apparently wanted Paul Mescal and that JQ is now a favorite. and I'm not going to lie, I also prefer a thousand times a cast capable of providing a credible performance rather than just being "pretty" 🤷‍♀️ (and do not get me wrong, I find Pedro, Ebon and JQ particularly hot so personally I would be happy to admire them on screen lmao)

1) tyranny (noun): 1. oppressive power, especially when exerted by government; 2. a rigorous condition imposed by some outside agency or force; 3. an oppressive, harsh, or unjust act: a tyrannical act.

2) patriot (noun): one who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests

3) patriotism (noun): love of or devotion to one’s country

Blind Patriotism and BBQs

Just a few days ago, Americans celebrated the signing/finishing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Some call it Independence Day. Some call it the Fourth of July, or “the 4th” for short. Others call it “a day off” and a steal on meat prices so “we might as well barbecue too!” 

However, Independence Day is a day of blind patriotism. People scream God Bless America, listen to country music (which was created by black people and stolen like errthang else we made), go to the beach, have barbecues, and pool parties. People find reasons to purchase fireworks, light em up all weekend long, and wear ridiculously patriotic outfits and look like Betsy Ross (or the black woman who actually made the U.S. flag) custom made their outfits. Why though? I think it’s a tradition that helps the capitalist machine: give people a day off and they will spend their money. Give special deals on everything and they will spend their money. Promote Independence Day like a day for barbecues and fireworks so they forget how messed up this country is/was/will be, and they will spend their money. And we all did.

I personally have an issue with “celebrating” the 4th because the delusional Founding Fathers (FFs) could have sex with slaves, produce human babies, didn’t see black/Africans as human, and continued to enslaving them while crying for their own freedom. An oxymoron of sorts. My ancestors were in physical chains on purpose, NOT BY ACCIDENT, while their oppressors/owners were hyped about signing a paper that declared their revolt against their political chains. I can’t wholeheartedly get with the celebrating.

Sidenote: I’ll slide through to the barbecue, eat up all the food, watch a lil fireworks or something, but I won’t like it.

Is it like Oil and Water? Being Black and Patriotic.

In a renown speech, Frederick Douglass asked white allies: “What to the slave is the Fourth of July?” In this blog, I ask you: “What to Black/African American is the Fourth of July?” It seems like holidays of patriotism are the antithesis of the black experience and should not be celebrated. I question myself on my disdain for celebrated white lie holidays like the Fourth of July.

I believe in the African Diaspora, that through Middle Passage I am a descendant of West Africans stolen and sold into Western slavery. I do believe that somewhere on the continent of African I have a homeland, but I am also American and this is the only home that I’ve known. Yet, I don’t really mess with America or whiteness like that: So can I be a patriot?

The way I feel now is the same way that some enslaved Africans may have felt in the 1800s while the American Colonization Society (ACS) was raising money to free and return African Americans to Africa. The ACS (Abraham Lincoln was a member btw) was like: “We are somewhat abolitionists. Y’all aren’t equal to whites. You can be free, but you have to go back to Africa.” Some free and enslaved Africans saw it as an opportunity of true freedom and independence (ex. LIBERIA). Others were like: “No, my family is here. I don’t know nothing about no Africa. I’ll stay here with my family, fight in this coming Civil War for my freedom. I’ll earn my place at the table.”

In the early 1900s, Garveyism and the Back to Africa movement also received similar sentiments as the ones listed above. “If this country won’t treat us right, let’s return to our homeland - Africa - and truly be free” and people who had the funds to move actually expatriated to West Africa and other African nations. Some stayed where they were, but began appropriating African customs and traditions into their African American lifestyles. Others were like I don’t know nothing about no Africa. I’ll stay here with my family and make things better. For those that stayed, they tried to make their home the America their grandmothers and fathers dreamed of.

For most descendants of enslaved Africans in America, we are the descendants of the ones who could not leave and chose to survive AND those who chose to stay and chose to survive. Sometimes where you are is home. In this case, Black people who call America home will not be disrespected in their home and they tried to put respect on their name, families, and race. This still goes on today.

The Resistance Continues: Oppressed, But Never Complacent

Tyranny. We don’t call what the rebel colonists of 1776 fought against as tyranny anymore. Black people: our tyranny is institutionalized racism, systemic racism. 

We have been fighting against this type of tyranny for centuries. Playing dumb in the field. Sabotaging the overseers. The Underground Railroad. Slave Rebellions. The Freedman’s Bureau. Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Fighting in the white man’s wars for our Freedom: Seven Year’s War, War of 1812, American Revolution, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War. Fighting for the black man’s right to vote. Fighting for black women’s right to vote. Nonviolent protests against segregation. The Civil Rights Movement. SNCC. SCLC. The Black Power Movement. The Black Panther Party. The Free Breakfast program. Black is Beautiful. Hip Hop culture. Black Lives Matter. 

We are the truest definition of patriots. People who love their country and want to see it become better because that’s the only home they know. People who choose to stay and fight the good fight because, if we leave it up to our oppressors, we would all still be in chains. We might not support the decisions made about how our black lives are policed and politicized, but we support the possibilities of the Constitution and policies set in place to protect us (even though they don’t). You’ve got to believe that one day shit is going to change and NOTHING that we have has come easy in this fight against tyranny.

White supremacists and those with that mindset might have bombed our churches, publicly lynched our leaders, turned water hoses on us, jailed us for fighting for what we believe in, advanced towards us with military tanks in our neighborhoods, boldly called us niggers as if they wouldn’t get slapped, told us we were too loud, aggressive, or scary, but we are never complacent.

If the majority of Americans can celebrate the colonist’s declaration against tyranny and call it patriotism, then they should respect our constant fight against institutionalized racism to make our home more just for our people patriotism as well. RESISTANCE IS PATRIOTISM.

Even after writing this, I still feel some type of way about The Fourth of July festivities. Even though I just proved that Black people are patriots for resisting the systems that oppress them at every turn, I don’t feel like I should be jiving for the traditional blind American patriotism that the textbooks and commercials teach us. One thing I can celebrate is this idea of Black Patriotism in America and how Black peoples are resilient and resist. And, yes, the resistance continues.

Thought of the Rootless: I have the ability to have a home, despite not feeling at home. I guess that resisting gives us that hope and change my President Barack Obama always talked about. But is resistance enough to bring you joy?

Here’s All the Fashion News You Missed This Week

Topshop Will Close All US Stores to Avoid Bankruptcy

After months of precipitous decline beginning with accusations of sexual assault levied against owner Sir Phillip Green in October 2018, Topshop has announced they will close all 11 Topshop and TopMan stores in the US. The flagging brand is shuttering an additional 12 stores in the UK, bringing the total up to 23 stores, which will put a total of 520 jobs in jeopardy. The drastic move is positioned as a “final effort” by the company to a avoid bankruptcy. The Arcadia Group, which owns Topshop as well as other UK high street retailers like Miss Selfridge and Dorothy Perkins, has already closed 200 stores is the past three years. It is not clear whether or not this will affect Canada’s only Topshop, located within the Hudson’s Bay department store in Toronto. FASHION has reached out to representatives from Hudson’s Bay but have not yet received a response. (BBC)

Giambattista Valli is H&M’s Next Big Designer Collaboration

Giambattista Valli, designer of dreamy, tulle-drenched ball gowns, will be H&M’s next big designer collaboration. Though my initial reaction was one of scepticism – there’s no way Valli’s couture creations could be replicated at a lower price point, right? – it seems I’ve already been proved wrong thanks to Kendall Jenner debuting a massive fuchsia “mullet” dress at the amFAR gala at Cannes earlier this week. “This dress is everything – gorgeous, dramatic and fiercely feminine – and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the collection will be like,” Jenner said in a press release.  In addition to Jenner’s Barbie Dream Gown, another four dresses — all appropriately floofy — debuted at the Gala alongside Jenner worn by the like of Chiara Ferragni, Chris Lee (Li Yuchun), H.E.R., Bianca Brandolini d’Adda and Ross Lynch. All dresses seen at the gala will be available online at hm.com Saturday May 25th, while the larger collection will launch in-stores on November 7th. “I accepted this project because I felt it was the right moment to share my vision with a new audience. Kim Kardashian Has Already Trademarked Her New Baby’s Name

At just two weeks old, Psalm West is already a mogul-in-training. The son of Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, who was delivered via surrogate on May 9th (a Taurus!), is already the subject of a number of trademarks filed by his mother’s company, Kimsaprincess, for products as varied and baffling as children’s clothing, nutritional supplements, skin care, and glassware. Though strange, this bit of news isn’t unprecedented. Kardashian and West have already copyrighted the names of their three other children, North, Saint and Chicago. According to WWD, the move is a common way for celebrities to deter third-parties from starting businesses in their child’s name. (That would be, admittedly, weird.) Perhaps the most compelling tidbit of all is that Kim Kardashian actually named her company, Kimsaprincess, which sounds like the name 12-year-old girl would pick to name their business. (WWD)

Catalogs are Having a Comeback

Growing up, one of the things I’d look forward to the most around Christmastime was the Sears catalogue. Easily the size of a phone book (remember those?), there was no greater joy than flipping through the colour-coded pages and dreaming up elaborate, imaginary wishlists. (What can I say, I became a consumer VERY early on.) Naturally, I haven’t read a catalogue in years, but according to Business of Fashion, there has been a significant renewed interest in the medium. “I think digital communications are starting to overwhelm people, and a well-designed piece of print advertisement can be an unexpected touchpoint,” said Colin Nagy, head of strategy at creative agency FF New York, told Business of Fashion. Apparently, a brand called Naked Cashmere invested $125,000 into a creating a 36-page catalog, which led to sales of seven time the initial investment. Yowza. If brands are able to create a catalogue that’s both accessible and aspirational, it appears they have quite a bit to gain. Print really is the new digital. (Business of Fashion)

RLJ Lodging Trust and FelCor Lodging Trust to Merge Creating $7 Billion Leading Lodging REIT

RLJ Lodging Trust (NYSE:RLJ) and FelCor Lodging Trust Incorporated (NYSE:FCH) today announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which FelCor will merge with and into a wholly-owned subsidiary of RLJ in an all-stock transaction. Post-merger, RLJ is expected to have a pro forma equity market capitalization of approximately $4.2 billion and a total enterprise value of $7 billion, creating the largest pure-play public REIT dedicated to owning focused-service and compact full-service hotels. The merger will establish the third biggest pure-play lodging REIT by enterprise value, creating meaningful scale to capitalize on cost efficiencies, negotiate leverage and access to capital, and the opportunity to strategically recycle assets and optimize the portfolio. The combined company will have ownership interests in 160 hotels, including premium-branded hotels located primarily in urban and coastal markets with multiple demand generators. The combination also provides significant penetration within key high-growth markets and broad geographic and brand diversity. With a strong and flexible balance sheet and disciplined approach to portfolio and asset management, the combined company will have the attributes and capabilities to drive accretive growth and to pursue additional opportunities to enhance value. FelCor’s operating units will be exchanged for limited partnership units in RLJ’s operating partnership at a similar exchange ratio of 0.362. Following the merger, RLJ’s shareholders are expected to own approximately 71 percent of the combined company’s fully diluted equity, and FelCor’s shareholders are expected to own the remaining 29 percent. This strategic merger was unanimously approved by the Boards of both companies. Once the merger is consummated, the company will retain the RLJ Lodging Trust name and will trade under the ticker symbol “RLJ” (NYSE). The merger of RLJ and FelCor will produce significant economies of scale, including approximately $22 million of expected savings from the elimination of duplicative corporate general and administrative costs. The combined company is also expected to benefit from long-term, property level savings in the areas of energy/utility contracts, insurance and furniture, fixture and equipment (FF&E) procurement. Finally, the merger will augment RLJ’s human capital by adding a number of talented FelCor professionals to the RLJ team. The combined entity will have significant financial strength and flexibility, including approximately $700 million of available liquidity, which includes approximately $400 million of an undrawn credit facility. The combined entity’s projected Pro forma Net Debt to EBITDA ratio during the first full-year of operations is expected to be less than 4.5x (or less than 5.0x including convertible perpetual preferred equity) and is expected to improve each year thereafter. Leadership and Organization The combined company will continue to be led by Robert L. Johnson as Executive Chairman, Ross H. Bierkan as President and Chief Executive Officer, and Leslie D. Hale as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Upon completion, the company’s headquarters will remain in Bethesda, Maryland. The number of Trustees on RLJ’s Board will be increased to eight, with one existing FelCor director mutually acceptable to FelCor and RLJ being appointed to the RLJ Board upon closing. Dividend Policy and Declaration Both RLJ and FelCor are expected to continue to follow their respective dividend policies until the closing of the merger. Following the closing of the transaction, the new company expects to pay a quarterly dividend of $0.33 per common share of beneficial interest, consistent with RLJ’s current dividend policy. Any post-merger dividends are subject to the approval of RLJ’s Board. Closing of the Transaction A joint proxy statement/prospectus will be filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission and, following its effectiveness, will be mailed to the shareholders of both companies. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2017. The merger is subject to customary closing conditions, including the approval of both RLJ and FelCor shareholders. Advisors Barclays is acting as the financial advisor to RLJ and Hogan Lovells and Arent Fox are serving as legal advisors. BofA Merrill Lynch is acting as the financial advisor to FelCor, and Sidley Austin, Polsinelli and Jones Day provided legal advice to FelCor. summary: every summer, you travel to dahlia's beach to reunite with your mother's closest friend and her son. but this year he unexpectedly brings a friend along. caught in the gentle waves of affection and longing, you find yourself navigating uncharted waters where the boundaries of friendship blur.

notes: this is loosely based on the summer i turned pretty. i just watched the second season and lawwwd i wanted to make a ff soo bad. plus milo and ross have absolutely none anywhere.

You loved Dahlia's beach. It always smelled salty with a hint of expensive barbeque if you were in the city. But near the countryside there was the sweet smell of honeysuckle. That's where you would rather be, where the tall grass met the sandy dunes. The sounds of hooves on pavement and bustle around the farmers market on a hot weekend afternoon.

This summer was no different. Your stomach churned, rumbling in excitement as you neared the beach house. It was huge. Five bedrooms with enough bathrooms. Too many patios surrounding it. Turquoise colored pool with a small waterfall. The house was a blueish gray color with white accents. Calm and minimalistic, much unlike the other grand colorful houses on the street. It sat like a diamond around other stones in a non normal way. The most priceless of them all. Placed directly in front of the beach but not close enough to tourist spots so it was always quiet. It was always such an amazing way to spend the three months in between school. You looked forward to it every year.

But that wasn't all you looked forward to.

Your mom honked as you guys entered the driveway. A wide smile plastered on her face. Your mom seemed to love this place more than she loved you, even if she denied it when you asked. You knew the truth. Summers at the beach house were the only time she got to see her best friend, Camryn.

"Hey!" A voice squealed from the porch. You shuffled out of the car, legs aching after a long 5 hours. As you stretched you were met with Cam, arms spread jumping for joy. Practically knocking you over. They were best friends from high school. Going to college together and even sharing a dorm room. With how they acted every time they met, you were convinced they had separation anxiety. They didn't get to see each other throughout the year. Other than here of course. For they lived states apart, Dahlia's being a quiet beach town that was located in the middle.

Camryn engulfed you in a bear hug first, gushing about how pretty you are. Making you do a spin in your dress. Once she pulled away she did the same to your mom whose high pitched voice could be heard from the beach. As they talked about how ‘different’ each other looked. You watched as they walked inside hand in hand when your eyes met his.

Milo.

He radiantly smiled as he trotted over to you. The classic hands in pockets, ruffled hair, and expensive glasses. It was like he had a glow up every year whether it was him dressing better or maybe getting a bit taller.

"Hi" He cooed embracing you in a tight hug. The smell of his overpriced cologne filled your nose. It reminded you of sugary trees and cool waves. Much like the beach house. He was another reason you loved the beach house so much. Without him you were stuck with two middle aged ladies whose celebrity crush was Liam Neeson and only watched tv shows made by Shonda Rhimes. He was fun. He never made you feel left out or alone. He was everything any girl could wish for. Tall, smart, rich, and incredibly good eye candy.

"Hello, Milo." You smiled as he let you go.

He ran a hand threw his hair looking down at you. Eyes trailing down your body strangely. His expression was unrecognizable. Your face heated up turning your head to avoid his gaze. He touched the bottom of your dress. Yanking the fabric gently.

"This is a little short isn't it?" He questioned eyes meeting yours. Lips curled up in a sly smile. Rolling your eyes you scoffed slapping his hand away. He acted like a big brother sometimes. Especially with your clothes. Every summer complaining about how short your shorts were or how revealing your bathing suit was.

"Oh shut up you do this every-" The sight of someone else on the porch caught your eye. "Who's that?" You questioned raising an eyebrow.

Milo turned around and nodded in acknowledgement as the boy made his way down the stairs. Bleached blond hair slightly overgrown and wide smile on display as he made his way towards you two.

"Y/N this is Ross, Ross Y/N. He's staying the summer with us this year." Ross reached his hand out to you. Clad in silver rings that looked a bit out of your price range. Does Milo have any Middle Class friends? It was unusual. No one ever came to the beach house from back home. It was like a unsaid rule between everyone. Written in big red letters 'No Strangers'. The dads didn't even bother coming even though Milo's paid for it.

"Nice to meet you." He looked you up and down a tongue swiping over his lips. "Milo didn't tell me how pretty you are."

"Dude!" Milo exclaimed punching his shoulder rolling his eyes.

"Thank you." You beamed softening your voice. Milo scoffed walking towards the trunk slightly bumping into Ross. But he didn't seem to mind, hazel eyes still trained on you.

"So where are you fr-" Ross was cut off by a slightly pissed off Milo. "Are you guys serious? C'mon Ross help me with these bags." Ross walked away backwards eyes still focused on you with that addicting smile of his.

"See you inside?" He whispered loud enough for you to hear him.

You didn't respond. Only nodding as you strolled inside.
