Miso Soup and Breadcrumbs

Summary: The first morning on the mountain. Timeline: Before the Forgotten Children Case / Word Count: 1350

Original prompt: ‘I’d like to receive something focusing kind of more of the group family dynamic? It can be between just a few of them, or all of them, and in whatever situation, but I’m kind of in a wholesome mood.’

Masako was woken up by pleasant smells of breakfast cooking. She rolled over and surveyed the room. It always took her a moment to remember where she was when she slept in a strange place. The food smelled like home, but there were bird sounds outside, and a gentle breeze moved through the trees. No traffic, no hum of the city in the summer. The quiet of the countryside had grown on her since staying at the Yoshimi home. She had needed to return to the city for a recording when the guys had still been in the hospital, and the very air there made her head ache. The countryside didn’t make the world any more peaceful, though. There had been serious problems at the last house, and there were dark undercurrents outside this cabin as well. She wanted to drift off to sleep again, but the voices in the kitchen wouldn’t let her. Masako got up and shuffled to the kitchen doorway. “Naru and Lin-san will say they don’t want anything anyway,” Mai said. The front door was open and she was sitting on the stoop. “Can you ask them anyway? You have nothing to lose,” Ayako said.  Ayako had on an apron pattened with flowers. Masako had to wonder if she had it packed with her. They had been lucky the cabin had been stocked with some basic pots and pans. Masako and Mai had been concerned they would only be able to make their meals over a campfire — though Yasuhara had seemed excited over the prospect. Mai mumbled, “I do.”

“What?” Ayako’s tone said she had heard Mai clearly.

Mai flinched. “Naru’s going to say something mean again! Why can’t you go?” There was a pot steaming on the stove, and Ayako stopped stirring. She raised the ladle, her attitude menacing. “Then do you want to cook instead?” There was silence from Mai. She finally said, “I can’t.” Ayako nodded. “Just go. I’m worried they didn’t eat last night, too.” “Okay.” Mai stood up and slumped away without turning around. Masako started to back up into the bedroom again. “Masako.” Caught. Ayako continued, “Do you think you can stir this for me?” Masako entered the kitchen in the same slumped manner that Mai had left it. She went to take the ladle from Ayako, who proceeded to direct her to the sink to wash her hands first. Masako felt her ears redden. She knew that. There was miso soup in the pot, and Masako diligently stirred, though she had the feeling it really didn’t need her help at this point. In fact, it really didn’t look like Ayako needed her help at all. The meal was mostly set out. Next to the rice, there was a loaf of bread. Masako couldn’t remember if it had been on Ayako’s shopping list. She wondered if Takigawa had bought it. Or maybe John. “Where did you learn to cook?” Masako asked. “Didn’t you have servants for that?” Ayako paused in chopping a stack of green onions. “We did, but we had a cook during my teenage years that encouraged me to help. She told me the last thing I would want to happen is end up in college without knowing how to even boil water.” Her knife moved through the green onions again.  “I balked, at first. Just because I could, I guess. I wanted my nails to look nice, I didn’t want to smear my makeup in a hot sweaty kitchen. But when I would come home before dinner, there would be a little chore she suddenly needed help with. Stirring a pot. Retrieving a spice. Slicing a vegetable. When I realized my mother hated the time I was spending there with a servant - well, that sealed the deal. And she was much too good a chef for my mother to get rid of her just to spite me.” Ayako swept the pile of green onions into a bowl. “So, what about you? How did you not learn how to cook?” “My manager reprimanded my mom for allowing me to wash dishes,” Masako said. “Something about ruining my hands for a recording. Then I wasn’t allowed into the kitchen again. My mother sometimes overreacts like that.” “Sounds like you need a new manager.” Masako had thought she was going to say it sounded like she needed a new mother. She smiled slightly at the thought. “She’s my aunt. My mother’s younger sister.” Ayako shook her head slightly. “I stand by what I said.” Masako wanted to say something sharp back — how dare you, you don’t know me or my family — but she realized that was exactly the problem Mai had been struggling with. Nobody really knew each other. How had they managed to work together so closely for all this time? Was it really all going to fall apart when Naru and Lin left? Ayako came over and examined the pot. “That looks good. You should go get ready for breakfast before the guys arrive.” She glanced at Masako. “If you need anything to wear, don’t hesitate to go through my bags.” “Okay,” Masako said. She stepped aside and watched Ayako fiddle with the setup of the small table. Ayako was muttering something about maybe they should eat outside. Masako didn’t really see her as a mother figure, or the big sister that Mai did. Masako saw Ayako like the aunt Kimiko never had been. Someone who actually took care of you, and didn’t hold back if she saw a problem with something. Masako stopped in the doorway to the bedroom. “Ayako? How did you get what you want, even if your parents disagreed?” “How so?” Ayako said. She had been in the process of untying her apron, and she looked up at Masako expectantly. “My father still thinks I’m making everything up when I’m talking to spirits. My mother hates that I became a celebrity and wishes I had done something sensible with my life, and I’m not even an adult. My aunt just uses me since she couldn’t become famous herself.” Ayako pulled the apron off and set it on the counter. “Well, I think you misunderstand. I don’t have it much different from you. My parents never believed me about being a Miko. They still don’t. They just see me as a failure who shows up occasionally when she needs money. I couldn’t change what they thought of me, since each person wanted something different.” She shrugged. “I hope that makes sense. I’ve never been good at giving pep talks.” “Yes. Yes, it does.” Masako could hear voices approaching the cabin. “Do you think you could… let me help in the kitchen later?” Ayako nodded, and Masako scurried into the bedroom to get dressed. Takigawa’s voice carried into the cabin. “That smells good.” “No thanks to you,” Ayako called back. “Help me carry these dishes out, there will be more room outside.” Masako had chosen a kimono from her bag, and bumped into Mai on her way out of the bedroom. “Oh, I thought you might still be sleeping,” Mai said. She grinned. Her eyes were red rimmed. “Ayako didn’t let me,” Masako said. “You okay? Is Naru and Lin-san coming to eat?” “Ah, no,” Mai said. “I mean, yeah, I’m fine. They just haven’t changed a bit.” “Good morning girls,” Yasuhara said. He was looking around the cabin, which Masako doubted looked any different from the one he was staying in. His movements were stilted since his stay in the hospital. He gave off the feeling that he was concerned he was going to crack a rib again if he moved too fast. Ayako came in, finger pointed at Yasuhara. “Quit acting like you broke an ankle. Take the plates outside.” Yasuhara bowed his head too deeply. “Yes ma’am.” He leaned over and stage whispered to Mai and Masako, “If she is too much for you two, there is room in our cabin.” Mai smiled, more genuinely than before. “I don’t think John will allow that.” “Yeah, maybe.” Yasuhara waved a hand in dismissal. “Just like he wouldn’t let me drink with Takigawa last night.” He picked up the plates, and the girls followed him outside.

spice - have you ever encountered a house that you believed to be haunted?As a kid you think every house is scary and my brother and I used to roam the basement and attic of my grandfather’s senior home. The place was huge! There was a room with at least 30 couches. Other than that I slept over at a friends’ house and we warned not to sleep with our feet towards the door. We didn’t think much of it until my friend had a terrible nightmare and I had the feeling someone was clamping my arm so much my hand and started feeling all fuzzy. Needless to say we slept with our feet the other way the next night.

quilt - how do you take your tea (or coffee)?The other day @soooldout said she associated me with green tea which is a  huge honour hahaha. I absolutely looove green and white tea. I put no sugar or anything in it, I never have. But that last sip of green tea where it is actually a bit to bitter. Aaaaaagh such a good taste. I tend to like the more floral teas instead of fruity ones. You can basically wake me up with a cup of green tea and you won my heart. I might have my 2 liters of water a day in the form of tea..

Cider, Maize, Moonlit? ^^

cider - a food that you disliked as a child but now enjoy? 

Chicken liver hahah. Because it has strong smell and bitterish taste, I found it nauseating. Over here it’s commonly cooked with basic seasoning+turmeric and then fried later, but the smell still prevails… Only recently I found that the smell would lessen if it’s fried longer with lower heat, so it gets drier/crisp (or if according to my mom, it looked like almost burned out XD). With the smell gone, I’ve even come to enjoy the bitterish taste lol. Grilling it with lower heat and longer time does the trick too. 

maize - share the weirdest encounter you’ve had with a stranger on the street. 

To this date, I think it’s still the student back from middle school. I had just gotten off from a public transportation car at a stop nearest to my school, so did this one boy. It was the nearest stop, but we still had to walk 20-30 meters to the school gate. Nobody else was around as it was still pretty early (the school started at 6:30 am). At first we walked just like two strangers who happened to walk on the same sidewalk. But at some point, I had to slow down to put my purse into my bag, and he got ahead of me. Then he slowed to rummage into his pocket, and I got ahead of him. I fished out my phone to check the clock, and he got ahead of me again. Somehow, our walk had turned into a race to get to the school gate, and we both actually tried to get ahead of the other XD No words exchanged–it was just silly, instant connection with this stranger I didn’t know at all. I can’t remember who cracked up first, but we both ended up laughing at whatever it was we were doing then. It ended when he went into gate 1, and I still had to walk a little bit further to gate 2. Until now, I’ve never known who that boy was. But I think it would be nice if somewhere, a guy still remembered our little encounter and reminisced about it like, “Actually, there’s this weird girl back in middle school…..”

moonlit - are you a neat or messy person? Is your room / house orderly? 

hahah how do i answer this one… The thing is, I love neat–but I don’t have the energy to keep everything neat all the time, hence I seem like a messy person. But more than that, I HATE searching for stuffs, especially when I’m in a rush and I need it quick and I’m panicking and whERE’S THAT GODDAMN THING WHEN I NEED IT– you know :)) So I let things be messy, as long as I know which thing is where. When I can’t find things, it’s time to tidy up and simultaneously memorizing where I put everything. Because of that, I don’t let anybody else tidy my things. I sort things into two: fast moving things have to always be within reach, slow moving things get cleared up to cupboards, and the sorting may change on the next tidying up. I mostly put things back to their place, unless currently they will be used often–if my desk is full, scattering on any nearest surface it is. All in all, I guess I’m orderly, but not neat :))

2017 Fic in Review

looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? Uhhh, both. I certainly wrote less than I wanted to. But I also knew by about midway through the year that I was gonna be pretty useless when it came to writing for the second half of the year because my work stuff was getting out of control. (and it still is and has kept me from getting basically anything done so far this calendar year)

what’s your own favorite story of the year? Another hard question. Because I really love all the stories that I have in this year.  By Any Other Name, because as a story that dealt with themes of gender fluidity and other queerness it was the most personally important story that I have written so far.  Kaleidoscope Heart, because it was my big novel fic and after a little over three years of work I was finally done with it. And I had proven to myself that I could write a novel length story that people wanted to read and maybe if I could do it for fic I had a shot at doing it in the big leagues. 

Speakeasy Spirits, because this is one of the stories that I have wanted to write for years and it has the ability to be even more if I can find the time and energy to help make it what I know it is meant to be. 

did you take any writing risks this year? Yes. I wrote from a much more personal place with BAON and I took on the task of working on a story collaboratively. Which has been fun and super eye opening on the writing process and how it works for me and for others. 

do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year? I have three larger multi chapter projects that I want to work on this year. I would love to finish Speakeasy but we will see. But continuing Speakeasy and finally getting started on the other two is my real goal. I had hoped to start putting out Kaleidoscope’s sequel in February but being sick all of January and then spending the month of February playing catch up at home and work for having been sick in January squashed those lofty ideals.  So, new goals is to get the first chapter of Kaleidoscope’s sequel out by April and to have the first chapter of a shorter but still more than one chapter story project started in the summer maybe June/July.  While taking some time to reevaluate and revamp Speakeasy and try to get it back to a regular posting schedule. AKA. Let’s see if I can finally start getting something done in this spring/summer. 

best story of the year? I guess Kaleidoscope because finally finishing it was like a big deal for all the time and effort I had put into it over the years so it would be totally unfair to say any thing else was the best. But as I previously mentioned I really REALLY love all three of the stories I worked on this past year. 

most popular story of the year? Kaleidoscope Heart, Probably only because it is the oldest and the longest and therefore has the most established following 

story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: From this year? I mean I don’t really really think it has gone unnoticed, I feel very lucky to get the attention that I do on my stories. Butt I would love more feedback on interaction with By Any Other Name because I want more queer content and that was my first big move into starting to join the conversation in this fandom and in writing in general.

most fun story to write: I drive no pleasure from the careful construction of words into sentences. Or as @beejinki  says, “fuck ya’ll I ain’t write” (Bee told me I had to write this). But in general 

story with the single sexiest moment: Why do I even bother answering this question? I guess there is some steamy cheek touching in By Any Other Name

most sweet story: By Any Other Name, I think? (these are getting nigh impossible to answer)

”holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you!” story: Not Applicable

story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters & most unintentionally telling story: Ummm, I’m not sure. KH and BAON for different reasons. KH because that story went a lot further and in different directions from when I first started it way back when. And BAON because it presented all of the characters in a way that fit the canon but showed a hidden side to both Mai and Naru that really changed things up for them. 

hardest story to write: Kaleidoscope Heart, because it took three years. Though BAON made me thint the most critically about content.

biggest disappointment: uh, Speakeasy not becaue of it at all, but I am disappointed in myself for not getting more of it done in the first year of working on it. I am really hoping I can get my writing groove back on it soon. 

biggest surprise: By Any Other Name, I didn’t know I was going to rite a story like that until one conversation one day a few weeks before I started it and suddenly there was the idea and it needed to happen.

Oh my god, I have fallen down the Ghost Hunt hole again soooo deep. Shout out to @roseandradio the one follower I have who will understand how deep this hole can go. I was so surprised to see that I’ve written a lot considering I’ve taken up more subjects this semester + I joined the writers club in my uni so I wrote more originals than fics. And for someone who writes vignettes, 22k is seriously amazing What’s your own favorite story of the year? [K]. It’s the first original story I took seriously and so many people from writers club helped with my revision! I really think I’ve improved a lot because of this one story.

Did you take any writing risks this year? I applied for my uni’s writers club lol. That was a risk I didn’t think about at first… If I hadn’t gotten in, I think it would have take a huge chunk out of my self-esteem –> I wouldn’t have written for a long time Do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year? I gotta freakin finish my ongoing stories before starting others dammit. I also need write more and work on my shitty narrative style and description Best story of the year? Um. None. They’re all terrible. Most popular story of the year? I think it would be count, cadence, count lololol. If I had continued that, it would have blown up into a bigger thing!  Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Implore the Dawn, Dance in the Dark ;-; I guess fire emblem doesn’t mix well with the gh fandom? 2017 Fic in Review

(This is almost double what I had last year!) *This does not include the first three chapters of Fire and Gold since they were written last year and were counted towards last year’s word count. If they are counted my total published is 77,936.

looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? I wrote a lot more than I thought I had. Even though I had a larger “total” last year I was able to put out more publicly which I think is more important. 

what’s your own favorite story of the year? Moving Mishaps... Even though it wasn’t the most successful or well-written, it was one that I had envisioned earlier in the year and it felt so good to finally write it.

did you take any writing risks this year? Yes. I decided to challenge myself by trying to participate in more exchanges and zines and wrote quite a few things that I’m really proud of!

do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year? I think I’d like to be at least 2/3rds of the way through Fire and Gold. Currently we’re sitting at near the end of the first third so it’d be great if I could tackle this middle portion this year. 

A note about last year’s goal. I wanted to be at over 50k by December. I almost got there with what I have published! It is currently at 45,529! (And if we count what I have so far for the next chapter I’m only off by 1,776 words!!) This makes me happy to know that I was so close! 

best story of the year? I Actually have two. For one-shots it is hands down Reunited. I wrote it for an Epiphanies Exchange (where you have like a week to write it) and it was the longest one-shot this year and it came out damn well. It was also well-received and I just... I’m really proud of it. 

I think that Fire and Gold should also be a honorable mention for this? It’s not finished so it’s hard to say that it’s “the best” but still... I’m really proud of it and I think that it’s well-polished and well-thought out.

most popular story of the year? One Shot: No Matter How You Spin It  at 4,751 On Going: Fire and Gold at 4,010. 

story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: What Are We Getting Ourselves Into? I’ve actually put a lot of work into it... And I really want to write more, but looking at the numbers (and knowing that it’s not going to get as much attention that an adrinette piece might...) makes me kind of sad. I think I might work on it again soon, though so maybe it’ll pick up next year. 

most fun story to write: Honestly,  No Matter How You Spin It. Once I had a clear vision for it I just hit the ground running. Also it was really fun to work at making sure that it was edited down to being 5k and below. It was fun to challenge myself in all aspects of writing it!

story with the single sexiest moment: I guess  Strawberry Lemonade. Thought it’s a stretch because I totally didn’t go as far with that sexiness as it was originally supposed to have. >.>

most sweet story: Hot Chocolate. Pun intended. :) 

”holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you!” story: Probably Moving Mishaps. It has the raunchiest humor XD 

story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters & most unintentionally telling story: Fire and Gold for both. I had a lot of perceptions on Sabrina going into this year and through the writing that I’ve done they have shifted quite a bit. (Also the shiptease in that story changed because  of that sweet girl. Poor Chloe is so clueless. T.T ) 

hardest story to write: Fire and Gold. Keeping the candle going is harder than striking a match. 

biggest disappointment: Smile . I think I should have taken more time while writing it. Especially since it was for an exchange. (Also the two mini drabble series that I haven't’ finished yet T.T)

biggest surprise: I was surprised by how many pieces I was able to publish this year! I honestly thought that I would only focus on Fire an Gold this year, but I think that by pushing myself to do all of these side projects really helped me to stretch and grow. 

Also I was very surprised that so many people liked No Matter How You Spin It! It made me really happy to receive so much love and support for it!

1. What’s your favorite fairytale?

2. If there’s any place you could go for an unspecified amount of time (of your choice), anywhere in the world, real or fake, currently existing or not, where would you like to go?

Hoenn from Pokemon ORAS, so I can go surf or fly on an adventure!  (I also have a weakness for the diving experience.)

3. Fistfight a fictional character and win: who?

I would love to fistfight Rustal Elion from Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans. Season 2 GOT ME SHOOK SO BADLY!

Hmm.. nothing particular comes into mind?

5. Your least favorite video game that you’ve ever played.

Hmmm, I would have to say “The Witch and the Hundred Knight”.  Don’t get me wrong, the gameplay was interesting since you get to play the the vassal helping the witch, but it’s not one of my favorites.  Storyline was eh-ok and the ending was questionable to the least?  Apparently in order to get the true ending, it counts as the bad ending and vice versa??  It was really confusing!  And the game kept on crashing on me when I was grinding levels.  Needless to say, I was NOT fond of the game for doing it.

6. What was the last lie you told?

“I’ll be there my friend as soon as I arrive back on land.”

7. List the first three food ingredients that come into your head. What are they? They are your pizza topping now. Enjoy.

Rice, white chocolate, and soy sauce.  I think this would a horror show from an episode of “Hell’s Kitchen auditions”.  Gordon Ramsay would pass out due to the disgusting ingredients!

Ok true story, the last convention that I went to had this gorgeous person cosplaying as Queen Serenity.  At the time, I was cosplaying as Akira Kurusu and walked around with my friend and noticed her.  She had a water bottle stuck between her boobs and well you can imagine what happened next- she tucked her head down and started drinking while maintaining eye contact with me. I tried to avert my eyes, but to my horror I couldn’t erase it! Before I went down though, I distracted my friend from seeing it.

11. On the flipside, if you could have personally witnessed anything in existence, what would you choose? Time and all that bullshit doesn’t matter.

I wish I could witness a meteor shower or the northern lights!
