my favourite moments from the steven universe comic issue 24, by grace kraft & rii abrego

incredibly sweet pearlrose moments & like i said: it’s so them. but also, the connverse parallels ?? the way that pearl looks over at them and it obviously makes her a little sad, but she feels better once she’s with garnet & ame and they’re all wearing flower crowns ?? they’re so unbelievably sweet, i love this comic so much. and i have such a soft spot for all the crystal gems this is why i will defend them so much people they’re just grieving sapphic outcasts who never got to be kids (alright edit: i described myself, time to do some psychiatric research on comfort characters)

“you’re wonderful”

i used to think that rose says “my pearl.” then, as she takes her hand, pearl says to rose, “you’re wonderful.”

rose says the whole line. “my pearl, you’re wonderful.” johnston confirmed that. but apparently, i wasn’t the only one who thought differently at first.

she doesn’t look at rose when she says those last two words; she’s focused on taking her hand. she has such a pained expression & her tone doesn’t sound like recollection of what rose said; it sounds like pearl. it’s spoken sincerely, with affection. the way she used to speak to rose.

there’s also so much pain in her voice. i almost wonder if those were the last two words pearl said to rose before she passed away

whether that’s true or not, pearl has been thinking about how wonderful rose is, or, was, all day.

pearl misses her deeply, & this memory takes her back to their early days, when they were falling in love. she remembers the last thing rose said to her, you’re wonderful, & she finds that it’s too painful to look up as she says it.

because the hologram isn’t rose. that wonderful person pearl knew is gone forever.

to pearl, "you're wonderful" has two meanings. it's a memory of rose's words to her, but even more, it's what pearl is thinking about rose. she may have realized that she doesn’t know all her secrets, but she knows the most. rose trusted her with secrets that are dark, painful. still, no matter what rose told her, she will always be the most wonderful being who has ever existed in pearl’s eyes. she hopes rose knew that.

so, she says it to rose before she vanishes, even if she’s just speaking to a memory.
