Rosario Islands, Colombia
Cartagena | Rosario Islands | Bogota
Figuring out how to visit the beautiful beaches of Rosario Islands from Cartagena took a bunch of research. But it’s well worth it.
Tumblr media
To save you work, let me explain the options for a beach day trip and how we chose.
Playa Blanca is known for white sand beaches, it’s actually on the peninsula denoted by a star in the middle of the map below.  While the beach is nice, it’s crowded with tourists and vendors. You can get there by boat or by a long bumpy drive.
Island hopping sounds like fun but I read you only get to spend half an hour at each of the 5 stops, and only some of the stops are nice.
Snorkeling trip also sounds like fun, and has 2 stops.  The problem is also that you spend most of the time traveling, and the snorkeling is only so-so if you’ve had good snorkeling elsehwhere.
Speed boat to Isla Grande beach resort is what we chose, and also what was recommended by our hotel (could’ve just listened to them and saved the work. :)  The benefit is you spend only 1h traveling each way and spend 9:30-2 or 3 at the beach resort. Apparently this is more popular with Colombian tourists than the Americans.  So consider this an insider tip. :)
Spending a night or two on an Isla Grande beach resort is another option if you have time. It’s really beautiful there.
Tumblr media
For beach resorts, the hotel lady suggested Paue because they offer a boat tour around the island.  This time I wised up and just went with her suggestion. It turned out we’re on a small speed boat for 10 passengers, and it went fast and bumpy from the port on it’s 25 mile journey to Isla Grande.
Tumblr media
And it’s just paradise there: beach, water, sun, barely any people...
Tumblr media
The boat ride around the island was relaxing and fun. You can see a number of beach resorts and villas.
Tumblr media
They pointed out Pablo Escobar’s villa and supposedly a sunken plane, and Shakira’s villa too.  There were vendors selling freshly caught langostino.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back from the boat trip, we tried paddleboarding and kayaking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the water below the dock, there’s actually good snorkeling.  You can see yellow-and-black, purple, red-and-white tropical fish. And my son found a number of crabs in the rocks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also had the best meal on our trip here.  My son managed to eat a whole fried fish while my daughter enjoyed flavorful rice with shrimp.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had to leave at 2pm instead of the originally planned 3pm due to strong wind.  And wow they weren’t kidding. The speedboat was going so fast up and down the waves, I fell down as it was hard to keep up.  My son had a fun time... my daughter and I were very happy to be back in Cartagena.
Next, it’s on to Bogota.

Note
We need a Total Drama contestant who has the opposite problem that DJ has (at least in World Tour): animals really love them and follow them around a bit too much. They don’t hate animals; it’s just really inconvenient most of the time.
EX: Contestant is singing in the shower, deer bursts into the bathroom and trashes the place (probably with other contestants there)
Bonus: They somehow manage to harness/control this ability during a challenge and end up DOMINATING.

Cartagena Colombia with babies and toddlers!
I have always loved South America so when I started to see more people traveling to Colombia with kids I knew it was time to book a trip! Now this is one of those places that people will look at you funny when you tell them where you are going. “Colombia? With the kids? Isn’t it dangerous?” I started to question myself as well when getting the comments! But I did so much research and decided to…

Brief rundowns of Creme de la Creme series characters hanging out with family for the holidays
(nebulous "holidays" as different countries have different autumn and winter festivals)
(prior to encountering the MC; if they were friends with or romancing the MC it might be different!)
Honor Bound
Denario: n/a. If he has enough cash he'll go to a bar that has some deals on
Fiore: dresses up, has a genuinely lovely time with parents, sister, and everyone else, then a dreadful sensory/social overload afterwards
Korzha: n/a. Aggressively does something mundane like covering someone else's work so they can go and do something celebratory
Matia: really enjoys the good food and drink and chilling with parents and niblings but causes some awkward scene with their sister and things get tense
Raffi: has an awesome uncomplicated time with family and their village, hopefully his older sister is there on leave, super lovely!
Savarel: surrounded by warmth from their huge family but needs to take frequent breaks, especially from people asking how they're doing
Royal Affairs
Asher: a stilted time with parents where they wish they were somewhere else
Beaumont: doesn't do anything, avoids their cousins invitations
Dominique: has a brilliant sparkly fancy time with their parents and parents' friends
Hyacinthe: chills out fairly modestly with family, corrals their siblings to help make and serve food
Javi: has a lovely cheerful time, although if they have a sibling-in-law they don't like they'll make it awkward
Trevelyan: just has a little celebration with their dad and loves it
Noblesse Oblige
Danelak: goes to town, goes to a bar, regrets that they're on such a small island that having an anonymous hookup is impossible
Pascha: feels tremendously miserable, goes to church, then tucks themself away to do a ceremony alone
Rys: visits their parents, tries to cheer them up, and says lots of untruthful but affable things
Creme de la Creme
Gonzalez: throws themself into celebrations, eats too much
Hartmann: wants everything to be perfect even if their brothers end up causing tension at the table
Max: enjoys themself tremendously, helps themself to the brandy, generally has a cheerful time unless people bring up school
Freddie: pitches in to help with preparations and has a get-together with their family and neighbours
Delacroix: fades into the background as much as they can
Karson: tries to be a helpful presence but also generally tries not to be the centre of attention too much
Blaise: is with their parents and they keep saying it's good that they all have their health but things aren't what they used to be and it's not enough
Auguste: a perfectly delightful formal occasion with their mother and the rest of their family; a good time to be gracious
Florin: goes to a big banquet, probably tries to hook up with one of the wait staff
Rosario: just wants to enjoy themself and for others to have a good time; may end up smoothing over some of Javi's rough moments

Sinking of the 1715 Treasure Fleet
Tumblr media
On the 31st of July, 1715, the famous 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet, consisting of twelve treasure galleons, was nearly entirely destroyed by a hurricane off the coast of Spanish La Florida, around 2 a.m. near present day Vero Beach.
The vessels had been carrying over seven million pesos worth of gold and goods from Veracruz when the fleet went down, with two of the ships being lost to open ocean, while the others were crashed into the shallow shoreline up and down the Florida coastline.
Tumblr media
(A depiction of the Urca de Lima, one of the vessels of the fleet, wrecked upon Florida shores in the series Black Sails)
The Nuestra Senora de la Carmen was laden with gold bars, doubloons, and silver. An equal amount of wealth was on board the Nuestra Senora del Rosario in 1,000 chests, and the Senora de la Concepcion (also known as Urca de Lima) carried hundreds of chests of coinage as well. The Nuestra Senora de la Regla carried 1,300 chests of nearly three million silver coins, gold coins, chests of uncut emeralds and pearls, and Chinese porcelain.
Over 1,000 sailors would perish from the hurricane, including General Don Juan Esteban de Ubilla, commander of the fleet. In total, eleven vessels went down.
About half of the fleet’s Spanish sailors would survive the incident, and would create a salvage camp upon what is now North Hutchinson Island, and began collecting what treasure they could while waiting for rescue. Aid in the form of food, clothes, and tools came from St. Augustine to the north, sending a relief expedition.
Tumblr media
(Myself visiting the site of the 1715 Salvagers' Camp earlier this year)
However, news of what transpired spread fast, and many pirates in the Caribbean and along the American coast flocked to the site for the treasure that was ripe for the taking. First on the scene was English privateer Captain Henry Jennings, along with crewmate Charles Vane in the Bersheba, along with four other vessels.
Jennings had been granted a commission from the governor of Jamaica to “Execute all manner of acts of hostility against pyrates according to the Law of Arms” with instructions to harm no one other than pirates. However, after learning the location of the salvage camp, from a Spanish mail ship, they would ignore their commission's rules and instead lead a ground assault at the still struggling camp - the plunder of which would become Jenning’s call to piratical fame.
Tumblr media
(Treasure from the plate fleet. These pieces in particular, amid other artifacts, were discovered by diver Christopher James. Note that while mostly what is pictured are artifacts from the 1715 fleet, the keys and padlocks are from a later date) Today, those visiting the site of the Salvagers' Camp will find the McLarty Treasure Museum, a small maritime museum dedicated to the 1715 fleet. Beyond the museum is a boardwalk through overgrown dunes and out to a lookout post overlooking the coastline with a helm, mast, and a plaque for the fleet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(My photos of the helm and sight at the lookout station) My venture to the site earlier this year was a success, was well-received by those operating it and they may have me return at some point to do an educational program with them.

Let’s all pause to celebrate the birthday of Maria Rosario Pilar Martinez Molina Baeza – better known as Spanish American flamenco guitarist, actress, singer, comedian, Las Vegas headliner, perennial “special guest star” on 1970s TV shows like The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, Donny & Marie, Love Boat and Fantasy Island, beloved kitsch icon and “Cuchi Cuchi Girl” Charo! Bear in mind the actual birth date of the birthday girl is shrouded in mystery. Charo’s Wikipedia page devotes an entire section to “Birth year controversy.” (Her Spanish birth certificate and passport state 13 March 1941, but weirdly her preferred “show biz birthday” is 15 January 1951 – so in theory we can celebrate Charo’s birthday twice a year!). Anyway, if you don’t follow her on Instagram already do yourself a favour - the woman is a joyous ray of sunshine! “Cuchi cuchi!” Pictured: pinup of Charo by Steve Schapiro, 1976.
